    Thanks for yet another greatly informative video! I'm just dipping my toes into astrophotography but before I make the dive and invest in yet another lens, I'd love to see your video comparing the RF 16mm vs 24mm vs 35mm. I already have the RF 50mm f/1.8 (which has proved itself useful) but would like one with a wider angle of view.

    I have the R6 with the 16mm for milky ways but interested in upgrading without spending a ton. I am looking at the 24mm f 1.4 Sigma Art and possibly the ef 24 70 f 2.8 in either Canon or Sigma. I considered the Rokinon 24mm but heard there are many lemons before you get a good one? So I am stuck in neutral. Also looking at the 24 you have here, but seems alot like the 16mm. Thx for your videos.

    Awesome photos as usual Brent. Im curious what if you took a 24mm 18 (non RF) lens and compared it to the RF lens would there be a difference in photos? Also do you think if you had dropped your shutter timing to say 10 seconds that would have made a difference. IMHO i think i like the 1.8 photo better, seems that the MW had WAY more color and detail to it. Thanks again for the awesome Astro vids.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I mentioned that in the video, that I should have done a 10-15 sec shutter. The only thing that would have affected would be no more (or much less) star trails, and I would have had to use a higher iso. It wouldn't have had any affect on the vignetting, coma, or chromatic aberration. I also liked my wide open shot better, but only because of the better composition, no clouds, and the editing, not for any t4echincal settings or anything.

    Do you have a recommendation for a 20mm lens for the EF or RF mount that is good for astrophotos? I don't care about autofocus or not. I have the Rokinon 14 2.8, but want something better, but still wide-ish. Don't want to pay for the Sigma 14mm Art as I just won't use it often enough. This 24mm might be OK, but would like wider.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the only way to natively get 20mm for RF would be the 14-35 or 15-35, both of which are excellent but quite pricey. I've never used any other 20mm primes so I couldn't6 say what's out there in that focal length. I do a lot of panos with 24 and 35mm, maybe you could try that if you get a 24 and need to wider?

      Hard to say. I don't know what a lot of the lenses are going for these days, or what focal length you're wanting. I think you can get the RF 35 f/1.8 for around $500. I love that lens, and actually like a bit tighter or a milky way composition these days, plus I do panos with it when I need wider. You might also look at some EF mount lenses, oh and the RF 16mm is definitely well under that price range. I did a video on that one too.

    Thanks for this review! I think I will wait a bit to see if Sigma offers their new mirrorless version of the 24mm f1.4 in the Canon RF mount - which they have not yet. Reviews of it in the Sony mount indicate it might be improved coma compared to their older/current EF mount lens. Remains to be seen how it might compare with this Canon lens. But as you say, this lens certainly looks to be usable, just not ideal.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't Sigma or Tamron are going to be able to make RF mount lenses. Canon is highly opposed to 3rd party RF lenses. Maybe someday they'll reach an agreement for a license for Sigma to make them, but for now it's not looking good.

    • @davids5694

      @@BrentHall I had not heard that before - very good point that Canon wants to maintain their monpoly on the RF mount lenses for the time being. That may be part of the reason for their introducing these relatively inexpensive lenses - to keep the 3rd party companies out of the picture for now. Thanks for your reply - I may go for this Canon 24mm lens rather than potentially waiting quite a while for something better to come along. I have the Canon 24-105mm f4 zoom, so if this lens only became good at f4 it would not be worth it to me, but since you found it to be quite good at f2.8, then it is worth considering. • @BrentHall

      I haven't really done any empirical testing against the two. I'd say they're fairly close in terms of overall IQ. Maybe a slight edge to the 35? In terms of astro, they both do great when stopped down and as for which one I prefer for astro, it just really depends on what image I'm trying to capture. I still use them both a lot for astro, but I mostly use the 24 for filming. It's a great video lens for my needs.

      My Samyang EF 10MM F3.5 rectilinear, adapted to my R5 works great for wide field milkyway shots.
      Sonys 46m mount is way smaller than Canons 52mm mount, and the Sony body would vignette with a 10 or 11mm retilinear, hence no such lens is available for the Sony.
