    Thanks for a great video Brent. I always love a good "failure" video that ends up being a learning moment. Social media is so full of perfection, it's always a breath of fresh error (that's a pun) to see that I'm not the only one making mistakes in my photography. haha

    I have enough trouble just getting good terrestrial images! Although I’m fascinated with astrophotography enjoy the amazing photos of our universe I know better than to try it. So keep on making these videos and I’ll keep watching!

    Great video! I've got the same tracker and have had a lot of frustrating nights, but a few successful ones. I've learned a few things with my tracker. Using it with lenses past 200mm gets challenging. I've only tried out to 600, and that only had mild success. I also found that 30 seconds was the limit without tracking. I'm thinking that has to do with the periodic error in the gears, so not much you can do about that other than to guide. I did start guiding, and that did help a lot. I got a cheap svbony 30mm guide scope on an L bracket mounted to the camera and used a planetary camera I already had. I could then go up to 2 minutes at 500mm. Also, if you have a guide camera you can polar align with software which is much more accurate. In any case, I love seeing your astro videos mixed in with wildlife videos. Its a great combo that I don't see on any other channel.

      Thanks man! Monsoon season should be wrapping up here soon so hopefully I'll be able to get back out and mess with it some more. My friend also just bought an EQ6-R so maybe I'll steal his for a night and try it with the 800. Definitely shouldn't have any payload issues with that mount.

    This is the most real video I've ever watched in regards to the struggles of astrophotography. I think your final image looks great. I'm just beginning my adventures in astrophotography, so I'm feeling your occasional frustration. Excellent video, brother.

    That ended up as a pretty good result considering what you started with. This kind of photography is not easy but it's very fascinating.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! Yeah, it's definitely not easy, and trying it with this lens and tracker combo was even more difficult since it was probably pushing the limits of both, but "use 'em if you got 'em" you know. It was interesting to try anyway. :P
      Also, I loved your last milky way stuff out on the beach, and the puffins! I want to try to get out there for some birding and landscape stuff some time next year.

    I would like to echo the other thank you comments! I had no idea how different astro was until I tried it (because of you!), but I'm so happy I did. But I've never been so frustrated! Sharing your frustrations helps us mere mortals feel like we can persevere and try again. I went to Joshua Tree in April for a Milky Way astro workshop and it gave me some confidence that I too could get some good images. I would strongly suggest something like that to anyone who might have a similar opportunity.

    I kind of fell out of astro photography due to massive amounts of technical troubles. I spent more time trying to solve problems than actually taking photos. I am starting to find my way back now, but at a more basic level. Using just my AstroTrac and the camera instead of a full mount and cooled camera, telescope etc.

    Thanks for another good video. I’m in the same boat. I’ve had several epic fails with that tracker. I’m doing well up to 50mm but keep thinking about putting my 800mm on the tracker. I know it’s possible but it’s not easy.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it can definitely be frustrating sometimes. I've had decent results with this tracker up to a 300mm f/4 lens. Hopefully I'll be able to get out again and try the 800 some more. It's on the heavier side of what this tracker can handle, but I think if I get everything dialed in just right then I can get better results with it.

  • @UVcatastrophe
    @UVcatastrophe ปีที่แล้ว

    I've tried shooting using the same tracker with the tamron 150-600mm and was also met with frustration and short subframes (~60s or so). You didn't mention it in the video explicitly - did you check your exposure times with IBIS on vs off? I don't have a good sense for how IBIS might impact exposure times on a mount. conventional wisdom would probably say to turn it off, but best to test the difference to be certain. you definitely got a good final image of the Lagoon nebula.
    The artifact you were seeing where the Trifid nebula was definitely weird. Did you go through your sub-frames to see if the artifact was only in a small number of images which can be excluded when stacking? It could be a result of the distortion of the lens itself which is often corrected in software for these new lens+camera combinations. i've noticed that my R5 w/24-240mm has uncorrected distortion that's really pretty awful (not a big surprise given the price of that lens). i'm not sure at what point the distortion is corrected (if it's still present in the raw file or if the raw file is distortion corrected). Could also be a mechanical issue - like the lens' locking mechanism slipping as the temperature drops.

  • @darrenreely
    @darrenreely ปีที่แล้ว

    Just in case you didn't do this: I'd try the stack again but this time on the left panel choose "Check All", then "Register checked pictures...". Finally uncheck the shots with low scores and then select "Stack checked pictures...".

    The ASIAIR Plus has been a huge improvement for me in making astrophotography simplified! Also some dedicated software like AstroPixelProcessor have really made a huge speed improvement for working up lights, darks, flats, bias frames…. I had my R6 astro modified but dedicated, cooled cameras make a huge difference to create the best images.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm thinking about modding my R6 too, or maybe even my RP.

  • @craig_hills
    @craig_hills ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video. I have been trying the exact same set up. Have you had any trouble obtaining focus? And if you found a way to overcome the challenge? Finding that the 800mm length plus the flex of the rear of the lens makes manual focus very hard.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, focusing at that focal length sucks, lol. I haven't had too much issue with it though. You can always make a bahtinov mask for it though, which will help your focusing a lot.

  • @terryleasa161
    @terryleasa161 ปีที่แล้ว

    One half of the image is messed up with such a tiny field of view does not feel like it could be field rotation. Are you sure there wasn't a smudge of something on your front or back elements of the lens that distorted the image? (p.s. love love your relaxed, and calm style of your videos)

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I'm not sure about anything at this point, lol, but I haven't experienced anything like that with the 800 before. Monsoon season should be wrapping up out here shortly and hopefully I'll be able to get back out and try again soon.

  • @jasminrobert82
    @jasminrobert82 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, for a start this lens is not really made with astrophotography in mind, so you're kinda shooting yourelf in the foot from the beginning. I have this lens, and what i'm interested in is an adapter which could let me use it with eyepieces as a visual refractor at night (mostly for the moon and planets). I could then do some bird photography during the day and transform it as a portable telescope at night. Does anyone know if such adapter exist?

  • @greggScutum
    @greggScutum ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you still think that the f11 800 is capable of doing decent astro or would you say the lens is a limitation and you would rather use sth like the Tamron 150 600?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Idk yet, I've only tried it the one time for actual tracked astro stuff, so I'll have to reserve judgement until I get some more time on it. I think I'd prefer a bigger tracker with a higher payload, that would help the most for me, but I'll keep messing with it and see what I can get out of this combo. I certainly wouldn't use the 150-600 with this tracker, it's way too heavy for that.

  • @bbasiaga
    @bbasiaga ปีที่แล้ว

    I be curious to know how you find dim objects like this inte camera with that lens? I have a heck of a time getting it pointed at what I want. The live view images are too dim for dim things, and even bright stars are hard to find. Was considering getting some kind of pointer for my hot shoe.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that can be tricky sometimes, especially at longer focal lengths. Having a really solid knowledge of the night sky from your area helps a lot, and also having a lot of experience with using and gauging longer focal lengths helps too. Plus a lot of patience and trial and error, lol. You can also definitely get a finder scope for the hot shoe mount. I have one but I never seem to remember to bring it.

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx ปีที่แล้ว

      Is your tracker capable of GoTo? Probably even computer assisted with plate solving etc?
      I learned it manually but as i got bored of searching manually etc i used GoTo and plate solving with computer, makes the hobby so much more enjoyable especially if you have a visual telescope too (im doing AP with a 750mm newton on equatorial mount 100% automated and visual observation with a 8" dobsonian.)

    • @bbasiaga
      @bbasiaga ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harrison00xXx no, I just have the Ioptron camera tracker. It follows sidereal speed, but does not have go to. With wider, faster lenses I can get narrowed in easily. But this monster makes it tough unless there is a bright star in the field. Just need more practice I guess. I'm a long time astronomer, so I kmow the sky. It's just that I can't see anything in the viewfinder or rear screen sometimes, until an image is taken. I could plate solve that image I suppose. But then have to have a computer with me.

    I think you'd do better with a Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro. I has a much better and more accurate tracking and error correction, can handle heavier payloads has the SyncScan controller / database of objects. You'd also be better off having a proper polar alignment imaging scope and likely even a guidescope. Yes this is all getting very expensive. I have also contemplated buying the Canon RF 800mm F11 for astrophotography, however, I think it's likely, at it's best taking photos of the moon, the small aperture and optical design just is not sufficient for deep sky astrophotography, based on every astrophotography channel I've been watching for several years. On an unrelated note, we had the longest most intense thunderstorm we've had since I've moved here, nothing like what you experience in New Mexico of course, but we likely had 40 or so lightning strikes through a couple hours. I tried to set up up camera, and in retrospect, I should have set up my remote shutter using an intervalometer setting so that I could have successive 15 second shots without introducing any camera shake at all. But the biggest issue is that the lightning strikes were never in my field of view. Heavy rain made it an not enjoyable experience. We don't have a lot of unobstructed viewing positions in town and there just wasn't a good opportunity to capture lightning properly. Perhaps next summer, since the last of the warm weather was yesterday, now it's just the fast approach of a quick fall and winter snowfall by late September.

    First of all great video, u re a bit too hard on messing-up, it happens all the time, it is part of the hobby and I believe that this is a better video than just a perfect image... I think that 800mm is a bit too much for that setup

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man, I really appreciate that! And yeah, I do feel like the 800 on this tracker might be at the edge of it's limits, but it was worth a try anyways I guess. I'll try again with a lighter camera body and pay more attention to the setup and alignment and maybe I'll get some better results next time.
