Hi Mitch, I love the photography community and how strong the views are and the passion, outstanding, as seen in the comments ! 👍 Honestly after almost 40 years with Nikon when I moved to digital Canon had the edge, but these days as somebody that’s done their share of weddings & events I’m pretty much of the view that any of the major systems would have more than enough capability in the camera and the available lens to exceed my ability to exploit them. Now more than ever the only limiting factor is the person taking the photo. The 24 is a pretty handy focal length which I guess is why many zooms start there although not so many (any ?) start at 1.8 !! Keep up the good work , I love how you TH-camrs pull the pin and lob the opinion grenade out into the world 😄

As much as I love Canon bodies, I am very averse to the direction that Canon is taking towards lens design. They serve the professional market very well, albeit heavy lenses, but hobbyists are served with lenses having average built, protruding lenses, noisy motors, meddling AF performance and relying heavily on digital corrections.
There is no middle ground, and it may take a long time for them to serve the this market. I am glad to have sold off the R5 and RF lenses before their stance on 3rd party lenses became public.

My current fav lens is the Samyang 10mm EF rectilinear. This lens cznnot work on the Sony mount due vignetting. The even the sony 12mm vignettes with ibis on.
The Canon RF glass is sharp, and I can use 300 EF lenses on my R5. Sony does not offer what I need.- the Sony mount is just too small.

I have a feeling Canon is assuming more people with the R7 and R10 will be using this lens which would make that corner performance moot as it is a cropped photo. Using this on a FF as long as you know its there its just a matter of composing the shot with a small crop in mind if the corners bother you that much. Video, as you said is where this lens is really going to shine. I will be using it for my talking head piece on my channel moving forward.

I think that you can expect Canon to lose more and more shooters over the coming 2 or 3 years, unless they drastically change their CrippleHammer™ tactics, and stop being anti competitive with regards to 3rd party lenses for the RF mount. Deservedly so too. I have no pity for Canon, they dig their own grave, they can lie in it. Unfortunately, users like me, who are too heavily invested in Canon cannot really change marques, not without massive losses. I simply cannot afford those losses.

I was hoping I’d find a comparison video of the Canon 24mm RF against the Sigma 24 Art! I currently use the Sigma as up until this canon it’s been the best value, high quality 24mm prime available for RF with the adapter.
Thanks to your videos I also bought the amazing Tamron 35mm f1.4 a couple of years ago, still waiting on an RF 35 1.4 (or 1.2) that is as good or better, but for now I’m happy with my 35.
A more in depth comparison with the Canon and Sigma 24mm (bokeh, detail etc) would be amazing, the Sigma 24 is by far my least sharp lens, but it has such a lovely character and a beautiful look at 1.4 for environmental portraits, and is smaller and lighter than most of my other primes, but this RF would be way smaller and lighter still, especially given I wouldn’t need an adapter, and awesome if it’s sharper!

I just published my first review of this lens, I'm also on the GC :) Take a look, I took pictures at every aperture (1 stop intervals). It's def not perfect but it's heaps better than the 24-240 and 24-105 that I have and way sharper at the same apertures. the 24-240 especially doesnt even 'fit' my full frame sensor (I have the R5C) with black spots at the corners and the 24-105 same but less. I think with Canon you really don't get 'perfect' lenses unless you pay north of $2000... INSANE money.
Btw, the autofocus in video mode at least (the R5C has a different video mode compared to your cameras because they use the Cine camera line video firmware) is worse than the 24-105/24-240 - despite the 24-105 also being an STM lens. It's twice as slow at least and doesn't always work as well well. I had times when it would track my eye but won't actually focus on it, like its in 'half MF mode' despite being in AF, restarting fixed it, and also sometimes it starts focusing wayyyyy in on something that doesn't exist and I have to use the ring to 'show it' where the focus should be. that happened today in Broadbiatch when I took a video of a drag show in cameleon lounge bar.

The reason it appears sharper in corners than the Sigma Art are twofold:
    - with the RF, you're not actually looking at the corner, it's cropped (and horribly distorted).
-The Sigma is an adapted EF lens so it has to "rear focus" the image a much greater distance due to the longer flange distance. This will make the corners much softer, especially on wider angle lenses. It's just physics. If Sigma were permitted to make native RF lenses with a closer rear element, this would change.

I think slowly Canon is going to start losing more market share to Sony. Especially since they won’t open up the RF mount to third party support to keep us on the platform. By the time their 1.2 L’s are going to come out, Sony will be ready for a refresh of their GM’s. Either Canon has to nail them perfect or Sony will just do a refresh right after with something slightly sharper. I think Sony is playing defensive right now it’s a smart move, let the competition release their product and they can refresh right after to compete. All they need is 1 thing better to claim a more superior product.

I’m honestly thinking of switching to Sony from Canon because of this. Both platforms are neck in neck when it comes to their bodies and features. The issue with canon is their lenses. Sony is currently updating and refreshing making GM II’s while canon still slowly making their base set. The new Sony 24-70 GMII is killer, with their 16-35 GMII replacement coming up next. Meanwhile it wouldn’t make sense for Canon to be refreshing any RF lenses to outperform the new Sony’s coming out because they don’t have the lineup complete yet. Sony seems to be one step ahead at the current moment. I just wish the A7iv didn’t have the 4k crop and that gives the R6 the one up for an all around hybrid.

To be fair I'm not really a fan of 24mm on FF anymore. No 24mm is really great and its a really difficult lens to create. Where I think the 24mm will be a bigger hit is on the R7 and R10 APS-C cameras where the 24mm will have a similar FOV to the 35mm on FF. Plus that should help eliminate most of those ugly corners. I have the 24-240 lens which has similar performance at 24mm and while far from great its ok for the few times I actually need t logo that wide. 35mm tends to be wide enough for me in most cases so this is likely one of the last lenses I would get unless I do pick up a APS-C backup body.
