    One thing to note on the coma. I didn't think to try stopping down a bit at the time of filming, but it's definitely worth a try if you want to reduce that. It might help that particular aspect of image quality a little bit. Just keep in mind that will change your exposure tringle and probably force you to up your iso a bit to compensate.

      I just got my R6 last week and also purchased the RF 35mm f1.8 because of the price and usability of that focal length. I went just outside of town for 20 minutes and took a couple of Milky Way shots to try out the low light capabilities of the camera. My first test shot I set at f2.8, ISO 16000, yes, 16000, to check my composition was right, and very little noise in the image. I then set up a proper shot at f2.8 ISO 6400, and tbe image was really good. Very pleased with the noise levels in this camera considering I usually never go above ISO 3200. A good combo for Astro I think 🙂

      That's awesome! Yeah, I've been really happy with the noise handling on it for sure!

    Im planning to use my Nifty 50 1f1.8 and my 16mm f/2.8 and compare with my 70-200 as well.
    I also have a 28-105mm Kit Lens to play with on my R6. I try to stay Canon/Canon with lenses in the RF Family.

    Hmm... I might have to try this with my 24mm cinema lens. Obviously it has a wider FOV, but it has a much longer focus throw.

    Thanks for the review. I bought this today and know it isn’t the best astrophotographers lens but you did amazing things with it. I do intend to shoot some Astro with it and your input was huge to me, thanks!!! Btw were fellow New Mexicans and we do have some beautiful sky here.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks Donovan, I appreciate the kind words! Yeah, it's definitely not the best, but it's so small and light that it just never leaves my bag and is always nice to have around. I just got the new Samyang RF 14mm, so I'll be testing that out for astro and doing some videos about it here pretty soon.

  • @seb2549

    This was an awesome review that made me decide on getting the 35mm for some astro but also because it fits macro and is a bright all around low weight lens for video. I would love to see a comparison of this lens with the new canon 16mm f2.8 RF lens for astro especially wondering if the 16mm would have a less of a coma issue.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad I could help! I have the 16mm pre-ordered, so as soon as I get it, I'll definitely be testing it out for astro, and a bunch of other stuff.

    to bad you didn't test it stopped down to f2 or 2.2, even the sigma 35 art needs to be stopped down some to avoid the coma. I have the 35rf now but it's been cloudy and I hope to test it soon.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I didn't think about that at the time, definitely should have stopped it down a bit to see the difference.

    I got this lens for my bday and it has just arrived! I did get it mainly to do macro shots but then I found your video on testing it out for astro which is such a coincidence because I'm doing astro for my year 12 photography final this year - so this was such a helpful review, thank you!
    I had one question: (this might be a bit silly but I'm still kinda new to photography) I was just wondering how you did that stacking image of the milky way? (it was stunning!)

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You know, I've done a few videos now where I mentioned stacking, but I don't think I've done an actual tutorial on it...I'll have to get on that.

      @BrentHall  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man, I'm glad you liked the video! Yeah, I've been using the 35 more and more for astro and I still like it a lot. The coma and edge distortion aren't great for astro, but I don't mind.

    Hey Brent, I need to buy a camera for a mix of action stills and videos, mostly in the Himalayas, so fog, mist, rain, snow, poor lighting etc would be common. But I'm broke so cannot spend a lot of money on a decent camera right now. I was wondering if there is a camera which is not too pricey but decent enough to actually capture the emotions and facial expressions of a bird flying away from mean humans??

    Thank you for this test, one question about the focus process, why are you not using the focus peaking ? ( coming from Canon 6D I used to focus as you explain. Thinking to have an R6, I was interested in the focus peaking for the stars ? )/ Thank you

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally didn't even think to try that. I've never had focus peaking in any of my other Canon cameras, so it didn't dawn on me to check for that feature. If I remember, I'll definitely check for it though.

      Brent Hall I was actually really surprised as I’ve been using mirrorless fir a few years and the the EOS R is the only camera I’ve used where this feature seemed to be bang on. The other cool feature is you can can change focal length and it remains in focus, it’s some kind of canon magic

      Thanks for the sub man, I appreciate that! Unfortunately I don't have a Note 20 and probably won't get one since I'll still be paying off my S20 Ultra for a while, but the camera is pretty much the same as my S20 Ultra and I've done some astrophotography with that. The note 20 should be able to get very similar results.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of any apps for the phone that allow you to process raw images into a timelapse. There may be one out there but I only know how to to do it using a computer or laptop. Otherwise if you want to make a timelapse solely on the phone then you'll have to use the native hyperlapse mode or another timelapse app that processes it in the phone. I think Filmic Pro can do that, not sure though.

    Brent or others, I'm considering the R6 as my FF upgrade. Anyone have suggestions of wide-ish prime lenses in the 16-20mm range that we could use/adapt to the Canon RF mount that are good for astrophotography? I'm weighing the pros and cons of this versus a Sony, for which there are lots of great lens option of all focal lengths. Thanks, Craig

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm about to pick up the Samyang/Rokinon RF 14mm AF for astro and video stuff on my R6. I have the old EF Rokinon 14mm and it's one of the best astro lenses out there. The Sigma 24 f1.4 is decent too, though it will need the adapter, whereas the Samyang will be native.
