Thank you so much for doing these videos. Yours are the only videos I found showing the details I wanted to see. We are currently siding our home built truck camper. We have an endurance ride down in your area in three weeks, it will be our first outing. I wouldn't have had the guts to do this without your videos.
Hi Rebecca! That is awesome! Thank you so much for watching! Enjoy your trip, you will have a great time! Just recently sold my trailer and getting ready to build something else... Thanks for the comment!
Can you do some for bicycles as it be nice to see them in same size like this is better space for storage for camping and its awesome you everything 👍 n that camper trailer with nice design and keep it up with dream build and maybe I can try build one for my bike for beach only or lakes fishing spot
Where did you buy your siding..? I have a 12 year old camper I did and total remodel on and I love it but unfortunately it went to a hail storm last year and I've been trying to find a place to buy my siding for my camper... Thank you in advance..
Hello, Your videos have been top quality information for remodeling our 1970 Shasta 1400. We've really grown with our skills because of your knowledge. Thank you very much for your videos! I have a question on your thoughts for recommending a hot water heater for the shower and sink. We plan on going full time RVing when the trailer is completed. Going to try and migrate to remain in warmer area's of the country, but we understand the importance of draining our system in cooler temperatures. Reading reviews have been mind boggling. So we're really hoping you can recommend a type, brand/model, along with your concerns. Thank you in advance, really hope you can point us in the right direction please. David & Becky
Thank you Dave and Becky! I really don't have a recommendation for hot water tanks... There are a few 4 gallon models out there that a lot of people use in van builds, but they rely almost totally on there 12 volt system which can drain a battery pretty fast. I am sort of partial to the propane hot water system. Although I don't like the idea of a pilot light. My system of choice would be the on-demand hot water system. They are fairly small units. Only requires propane and water. The units use "D" cell batteries for the ignition. Simple to set up and operate. Hope that helps some... al
@@djenglis41 Meh... I don't have any preference one over another. I will research tank less hot water tanks and check out the highest reviews, probably watch a few videos about it then pull the trigger. There are so many brands on the market it can be a bit overwhelming. So, I'll pick one and just go with it. :)
I was wondering is there a benefit to putting a wrap over the wood before the siding, like tyvek, to keep the sweat from the siding off the wood? I have seen root that comes from the metal siding sweating from different temps over the years.
Hi Steve... I've seen a lot of the older restorations where they install a plastic sheeting before attaching the aluminum. I would say that anything you can do to protect the underlayment is a good thing. Obviously... I didn't use any barrier, and hope that it doesn't come back and bite me! Thanks for watching Steve!
I'm starting my camper project and I was curious, or wondering what company to order my siding from, looking for a link to check out, along with, roofing ideas, never applied a roof to a camper trailer before, looking for a help video .. thank you, you camper is very nice by the way, hope mine turns out like yours, lol!

When you trimmed around the windows with the router what bit did you use, a normal timber bit, or is there a special bit for aluminium? Reason I’m asking because i be doing mine after Christmas.
Hey Mario... great question. I used a normal bit... 2 flute (two bladed), the three flute was a little more expensive. A tip for you when you route the openings: if you have a variable router, turn speed down a bit, if not, then only route 3 to 4 inches at a time, back off for second, then do 3 or 4 more inches, do this until finished. The bit will get very hot and the aluminum will stick to the blades. Don't be in a rush, stop and check the bit now and then, and if it looks a little gummed up, take a pick and scrape off the aluminum that sticks to the blades. It took me two bits to route my openings. I learned after the first bit! LOL!!
Hey I’ve never shopped for this before, I’m in Ontario Canada, is there a distributor that ships siding, was your purchase local to you? Just curious thanks
I purchased the siding from Hemet Valley RV in California. Might want to give them a call for your needs and see if they can help ya out! (951) 765-5075
thank you for the advice!! can’t wait to see how things work out, I’m blind folded on this subject, don’t know where to start at all! Haha cheers! And thanks again!
Hi Da Ne! I used a two fluted router bit with bearing on the end. Ran router at slower RPM and cut maybe two or three inches at a time then waited a few seconds for bit to cool before cutting again, this keeps the bit from clogging with aluminum (it will melt to the blades). The tab is long enough below the S groove on the aluminum sheets to put the staples in, then the next sheet slips in the groove and you staple the bottom in place. Start at the top and work your way down.
Pretty good work and layout! I in courage you to think about if or when you have a flat tire! A flat or blowout would destroy EVERYTHING near that tire? More protection would be advisable? Great work!
Thank you rb2whrider! Yes... I agree. Will be thinking about a metal box or each wheel well. Hoping to trade axle out pretty soon, might do something then! Thanks for stopping by!
I used Eterna-Bond tape to seal the corners, then butyl tape under the trim. After installation, used Proflex around all of the edges. Thanks for checking it out!
I was trying to find out what kind of siding this is and can I change a fiberglass trailer to this kind of siding please help it my first true home I bought with my own money
Hi Ignacio! I purchased the Aluminum RV siding from Hemet Valley RV 41491 E Florida Ave, Hemet, CA 92544 (951) 765-5075. They are really good people. You tell them the type of trailer you have or send them pictures, and they figure out how much you need. As far as replacing the fiberglass..... unless it's totally falling off, fiberglass is better. Esier to maintain. If you have to take it off... it'll be a lot of work as the fiberglass is glued to the sides of the trailer. You'll have to replace the whole wall both sides and the front and back... hope that helps!
Hi Zachery... yes, 1/4" luan. Used a 3/4" length staple with 1/4" crown. Fastens very well. Had to adjust pressure so staples didn't shoot all the way through. Once that was dialed in, worked like a dream! :)
Hi eXtreme... the wood used for the framing is Douglas Fir 1 x 2. I purchased at local lumber yard. Most lumber stores should have this in stock for you. Thanks for stopping by!
Hello RideWithWil, thank you for tuning in! The company that I bought the aluminum from is: Hemet valley RV 41491 E Florida Ave, Hemet, CA 92544 (951) 765-5075. Hi Andrew... I'm not aware that the siding has to float. Normally, to cut cost and less weight, the siding would be attached directly to the wall studs. Thanks for stopping by!
The aluminum that I purchased was $1400 shipped. I could have went with the fiberglass filon, and cut the cost nearly in half... but I liked how this turned out! Thanks Elma!
OregonBatman - thanks for the reply. We got a 1979 chevy class c 19 foot rv for $800 from auction. I just dont have a lot of money to put on this rv. I do want it fixed and ready to camp in. The fiberglass is good too? It wont crack? I want to get an estimate. What’s the website? Or company name?
Hi Elma!! The little RV surplus store that I visited that had the filon (fiberglass) is: Affordable RVing 15555 SE McLoughlin Blvd, Milwaukie, OR 97267 (503) 659-3610. Very nice people! The fiberglass, once installed, should last for decades! It would have to be polished up every once in a while but will hold up very nice. If it takes a rock, it will crack, but mostly it is cosmetic unless it gets punctured... but is easier to repair! I could have sided my trailer for about 1/2 the cost of aluminum, so it is much more affordable. The company that I bought the aluminum from is: Hemet valley RV 41491 E Florida Ave, Hemet, CA 92544 (951) 765-5075. Cheers!
Robert Peruzzi I would use no less than two layers of ounce and a half fiberglass. mat... two layers three ounce is better but heavy. At that point, I would consider using filon. Easier to install, and a lot less work!
