  • Years ago I replaced the BMW N20 engine in my BMW Z4 and since then it has been sitting in my a corner of my garage. I finally decided to fully disassemble it and lay out all of the parts on the table. In this video, I remove the valve cover, cylinder head, timing chain, pistons and everything else!

I literally did the same thing over this past weekend. I disassembled my engine to diagnose why it was not turning over. The rod bearing welded its self to the crankshaft for piston 2. I sent the crankshaft to be rebuilt. now I am looking in to finding some connecting rods. best part was the timing chain and guides were replaced less then 3k miles ago.

Because replacing timingchain is much less work than complete engine dissasembly

    Very nice!
    I’m about to finish up a 3rd N20 rebuild.
First one was locked up. All but cyl4 were cooked, crank was gone. Upon disassembly I saw new OFHG, car had that done less than 20 miles before getting locked up (deduced by carfax and current mileage). Was not primed is my guess.
Second one, cyl2 low compression, piston was cracked, overboosted.
Third one, locked up crank. Timing chain “was done” 1k prior at a “bmw shop”. Upon disassembly found the upper chain was done, lower pump assembly was left alone, all the shards from old broken upper guide were in the pickup clogged. Cyl3 was the only one too far gone.
Not sure how I went from doing oil pans/valve covers/water pumps on E series to doing full on rebuilds on the Fs 😭😅…………

Also iykyk with N20 in any chassis
when the crank is locked up, you have to drop the subframe, raise the motor with a support bar to get oil pan out, remove the oil pump, undo each rod cap and then have the engine free to spin over. Can’t get it out with torque converter attached and have it spill 4 quarts of transmission fluid when the engine gets tilted out in the driveway.

Hello sir. My f30 328i has been sitting in my driveway for a year now as it wont start. Before it stopped running I started getting a low oil pressure light come on. It would only come on on the highway and usually when I was traveling on an incline at highway speeds. I would check the oil pressure on my scanner as I was driving and It was about 30% lower than normal, and pressure would drop as I would accelerate, very weird. The light never came on during city driving. One night I was driving on the highway, the light came on. I drove about another 10min and when I came to a stop the car was running really rough. I turned the car off and turned it back on as this would make the oil light go away. I turned the car back on started driving to the nearest gas station, still running rough like the car was misfiring and the oil light came on again. Which it never came on in the city so I knew the oil pressure mustve been really low. I pulled over. The car died. Had it towed back home. Now the car just cranks and it feels like its about to start but never does. I had lots of codes regarding the vanos and camshaft. Im gonna take the engine out. Do you think this may be rebuilable? I'm not sure exactly what the damage may be. Or should I just buy a remanufactured engine? Sorry for the long post. Also I know it was stupid to keep driving when the light came on but I didn't have the money to fix at the time and I almost always plugged in my scanner to make sure I at least had decent pressure. I really dropped the ball that night by not plugging in the scanner.

Looks like a brand new timing change guide.

It was, the timing chain was replaced on the engine thinking that the knocking was related to the chain.. it wasn't it. It was a spun bearing.

But you didn’t remove the Valvetronic motor, Eccentric shaft, rockers, valves and spark plugs

Very interesting video. The same engine I have in my 2016 E89. Any idea why the bearings went?

No clue, I bought the engine with a bad engine as a project. It was serviced at the dealer since it was new. 2013+ engines are much better.

@@SimpleCarGuywith the chain guides being brand new, I can almost guarantee that when they did the repair, they disturbed all the sludge build up inside the head and it went through and clogged oil orifices. Seen it happen several times.

I recently rebuilt my n20 engine and have no spark. No error codes or faults. Do you have any words or advice ?
