SKETCHY RETURN? Was The Customer WRONG? Blown BMW N20 / N26 Complete Engine Teardown

  • Another weekly dose of your catastrophic engine forensics! Every week you can find a new teardown of some abused, misused and/or poorly designed engine. I've got over 150 videos of failed engine teardowns on this channel.
Today we have a BMW N26 2.0L 4 cylinder turbo engine on the stand. This is essentially the same as the more common N20, with. just some different external parts like injectors. This particular engine is either a returned as defective or core return from a salvage yard. Between the loose parts, multiple heat tabs and other less than normal findings I am inclined to believe this engine has been in several different vehicles and worked on by multiple people.
These core engines always tell a story and its not usually a good one. Lets tear this one down and try to figure out what happened.
Why am I doing this? I own and run a full service auto salvage business in the Saint Louis area called Importapart. Part of our model includes dismantling core and blown engines to salvage the good usable parts from and resell. We do not rebuild engines, merely sell parts to those who do.
I hope you enjoyed this video and as always, I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism.
Catch you all on the next one!
    -Eric

Would have been interesting if you took the electric water pump apart. I think like 99.9% of the people here have never seen the insides of an electric water pump. Also would be interesting to get a feel for reliability. What kind of bearings do they use? Could you fix/rebuild it if they no longer offer the replacement part?

The electric water pump seized and caused the overheating most likely. Driver probably noticed the temp going up, engine light came on, decided he/she was going to drive it home that way, and thar she blew!

Older bmws are great except for the oil leaks but I think bmw from the factory makes sure you engine is well lubed from the inside as well as the outside of the block. 😂 The problem with bmw is you should only buy oem or one of the other sellers who make oem certified parts for them. Because bmw aftermarket parts will work but not for long at all and I mean even down to the door handle carriers... I still own a 2006 bmw x5 4.4i and I love the thing it has just about 220,000 miles on it and still runs amazing... I will say though since I've owned it it gets new oil and filter every 4k miles and only using synthetic oil so maybe that's why it's treated me good. As far as parts lasting on them for an almost 18 year old heavy tank of a suv I had to finally swap out the factory airbags in the rear this summer which was a breeze to do.
Oh For anyone who does the rear airbags on an X5 don't expect your air ride to air up with it still jacked up. 😂😂😂 yes it drove me crazy for about 30 minutes trying to figure out why when the light bulb finally went off in my head. But im no mechanic by any means I'm just an average dude who is not scared to get my hands dirty. OH also for anyone that ever changes the water pump in the 2006 N62 engine don't watch the video about the guy who claims you can get the bottom water pump bolt out by not having to take the crank pulley off. Yes you can get the bolt out, but not back in, so just spend the extra 10 minutes of your life ans pull the crank pulley off and thank me later that you didn't try his shortcut. 😂😂😂

I enjoy seeing these teardowns. It's personally something I'd love to do if I had the money, time, and even tools and whatnot. Primarily though I vibe with your channel quite well because I always loved to take apart stuff when I was younger, even tho most of that stuff was failed or otherwise nonfunctional electronics stuff that wasn't being used anymore anyways (that I also had permission to take apart too of course.) And while engines differ form what I did when I was young, it still fits in the general "take apart thing and see how it works and what went wrong." kind of deal.
Also a bit of a minor edit but... I have to personally wonder what the percentage of the watching audience of these videos is that is, people who know that timing chain guides cannot be reused, and don't mind you tossing them, as they'd probably do the same(I honestly would. it's fun if the timing guide is either just being removed for good in total teardown or being replaced for maintenance or otherwise), how many people are just trolls that like to just be silly in their weird way by acting like the people who don't know that timing chain guides cannot be reused. And then how many are well... the people who don't know timing chain guides cannot be reused. Like I really have to wonder that.

Nice teardown! I have a 2014 428i with the SULEV N26 engine which I love. The engine is very smooth and so punchy. So far its been flawless, but I am on top of the maintenance. The metal oil pan on the teardown tells me that it probably came from an xDrive model. Non xDrives were typically fitted with a plastic pan.

Grotesque over-engineering. As a retired mechanic, I can say after decades of experience that I thoroughly loathe European car and engine designs.
I am curious if those electric water pumps are reliable and do they run on 12 volts or is there an inverter involved? I retired just before these engines were brought to market so, I have no experience on this particular engine.

TWO CAMSHAFTS?? Young man, back in my day we where happy if we got HALF a camshaft and three valve springs. Four or five valve springs was reason to celebrate! We'd forge the rest of the camshaft from the remains of the Model Ts we had strewn about, and hammer-forge the parts together for a complete cam. Of course, we had to file the lobes to the correct shape, but a cardboard template did the trick.

These BMW engines are very nice, very high end, and very complicated and very driveable engines. The buyer of a new BMW is very happy with it I guess. BUT: when they get older, with some mileage on the ODO, they will get a real pita because they are so complicated and expensive to fix. Also not very durable and reliable. Using a cheap poorly made electric waterpump that surely will fail is a recepy for blown engines. Unnessecary complicated engine. A good shop replaces this stupid waterpump as a prevention, and changes the oil much more often as the manufacturer states. Maybe, maybe, by doing this it will last a long time without big repais. Obviously it's not a Honda or Toyota by far.
From good cars they have evaluated in throw away cars.

Valvetronic is very reliable. Surprisingly so. It's the biggest reason these things are so fuel efficient. The throttle body is only there to keep the engine from screaming to high heaven if the valvetronic motor fails wide open. Whenever finding signs of overheating, you should check the heads for warpage with a straight edge in your videos. OHC heads cannot suffer much warpage at all since that messes with cam bore alignment.

I just found out yesterday when doing a head gasket on my 6 G 75 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT engine the the intake valves open together but one opens much larger than the other only when my back kicks in they will both switch to a completely different cam profile and they will both open all the way could have something to do with it I thought they opened equally together I guess not. I actually bent a valve while doing a water pump and timing belt by hand how to remove the cylinder head heated the valve up with a blowtorch till it was red then turn the cam to where the valve was in the down position found a large socket the size of the valve gave it a good smack pick the valve back up by turning the cam rotated the valve heat is it up again lowered it and gave it a good smack again put water on top of the valves to see if it leaked it is now fixed. I also created a new method to remove a dipstick tube using vise grips and a pry bar it was super easy barely an inconvenience.

Those vacuum pumps are kinda pricey if I remember correctly. Of course I'd never sell a used one to a customer. Maybe on my own car. That will never happen though. If it doesn't have a T or H on the front it won't fit in my driveway.

Nonetheless weather what ever caused it. Im still a strong believer in Shutting your engine off and NOT idling unless it is super cold outside. A running engine is an engine that is wearing itself out especially in these new motors. Junk. These people should consider a early 1990s GM 3.1 Multi port swap. Theyd do better. 😂😂😂

@@jacquesc3166 exactly. I had a 90 Lumina years ago, I got 2 oldsmobiles 92 and a 96 currently both still fully drivable, What an underrated engine those were. Underpowered sure, reliable and easy to repair absolutely, as they have all their accessories on top, back to front Alternator, power steering and Water pumps and a forever "steel" timing "chain" and most importantly you won't find any plastic parts in or on the motors all aluminum or iron. Not bragging but people are forgetting what cars actually used to be with the exception to increased HP and torque. Doesn't seem like a good trade off.

Other than the timing chain cassettes (and some other issues) the N20/N26 was a pretty stout motor. Sadly the long service intervals BMW has really didn’t help.

That magnetic crank trigger ring is one of the biggest mistakes the auto industry ever put out there - ask *any* Ecodiesel owner. What was wrong with a simple reluctor wheel bolted to the harmonic balancer? Oh I know, they wanted to keep people dependent on dealership repairs >_

I actually prefer the N20 to the N52. BMWs naturally aspirated motors do absolutely nothing for me. I got turned off to them on my E39. Gave Dinan close to $10k and got a measly 34hp on the M62TU. Screw that. I give Burger $499-$799 with a turbo motor and get 50hp+. I'll take the turbo every day of the week.

240hp from a 2.0 turbo 4? Pretty pathetic…. Maybe they have a ton of torque? Idk GM’s 4cyl’s blow that out of the water power wise, and do it with far less complexity. Just standard VVT, or in the case of the LSJ, 225whp from a supercharged 2.0, no VVT AND port injected not direct.

I am still confused as to why anyone would buy an engine from a junk yard unless theirs was destroyed beyond repair . Salvage yards exist for one reason , to rip off the unsuspecting hillbilly . Only the Germans could make a four banger complicated ? Why the **** IS THERE PLASTIC INSIDE AN ENGINE ,last time i checked they get hot ?
