One of the best drummers on the scene today. MASSIVE feel. Not to mention the two guys messing around on the guitar... just saw them live last week. Great guys, absolutely zero BS attitude about them.
A dream "pairing". I've been a fan of both for many years. This is is a feast of great playing by two masters of taste, phrasing and soul. Dig it! I wish we could see them down in Texas--y'all have a lot of fans down here...
How anyone could check this as a "dislike" is beyond me. What, not enough autotune for ya? These two guys defined an entire era and they keep getting better. Great track. .
Beautifully said, Laxer3232. This is true ensemble...where everyone listens and is suportive of the soloist, while at the same time having the freedom to stretch out however they choose within the parameters of their function in the music. Nothing more rewarding and satisfying.
Defence hell, These guys are incredible. Put on your phones and listen full blast. Any "Jones" for excellent guitar is met and exceeded with these two artists! Holy sh*t.
Just blows most everyone else away...Lot of posers out there that couldn't hold a candle...Amazing that Larry Carlton survived a random act of violence, being shot in the neck and left for dead....Comes back by God's grace and performs at a level beyond most...
Holy gawd, this obtuse and angular frame forces the soloists to deliver above and beyond the call of duty and damned if these mofos don't rise to the occasion. Respect.
Damn, this band is playing some tight funky sh*t. Its a great tune and really showcases how good it can be when these two great guitarists play together. Love Robben's tone and the diminished licks he plays and the outside stuff at 2:55 is really cool.
its not just robben and larry who are playing awesome, its the whole band... exspecially the drummer and the bass player are playing an awesome groovy style and the organist is just playing a little bit but it allways fits perfect in my opinion
This video was taken from a Larry/Robben show at the Blue Note in Osaka, Japan on 9/1/06. Larry and Robben are doing a few more dates in the states in august, so check 'em out on our myspace (/335records) or youtube bulletin. -335
Well then! The hobo I have bound and gagged in the basement, who is being forced to watch this repeatedly has an excellent taste in music! Good to know.
On one hand I think RF is totally outclassed by LC here. LC's solo approach is awfully bold, and is probably the only way he could follow RF's fireyness without actually trying to one-up him -- which he's totally capable of. On the other hand, I love RF's snappy attack and tone, & how he takes these big, clean bites out of that diminished form they're both working. Woof! I love this.
All of you guys out there keep on talking about these two talented guitar cats, which of course is not particularly surprising since it is their show :) but you all seem to forget the engine in this concert, Toss Panos drummer extraordinary. No matter what you have to believe this Toss runs the show with his brilliant and magical drumming. So keep on discussing lines and riffs, guitar amps, chords, who plays better than the other, whatever...but tha drummer is the man in this show
Toss has been around the LA scene for a while; one of the underground guys who has been on a lot of sessions; especially with players' players like Mike Keneally, Jeff Babko, Karizma (99), Robben Ford (Toss has contributed to Robben's last two studio efforts), Frank Gambale, Mike Landau, etc. He taught at PIT in Hollywood from 87-96. Certainly a qualified cat.
The "Big Boy" on bass is Larry's son.... Don't remember his name but, He smokes! Larry is very proud of him. I saw them 2 years ago.. same line up but without Robben. Great blues show... Saw Robben at the same place last year... Crystal Bay club in Tahoe, small room, very intimate. Great shows!
Robben Ford is a very deceptive player... First he tricks you into thinking "Hey, that's easy, it sounds great but I can play like that too!", but after a few seconds he shows his master skill in jazz-playing, with all the notes out of scale, jazz licks, great technique and out-of-the box melodic thinking... A real pleasure for my ears.
Nuthin but good shi&*% here! My friend had some nice bootlegged cassettes of Robben with the yellowjackets in Redondo beach in the early 80's. I was waiting for Larry to darn near smack the drummer here because he wanted it WAAAAAY down low in volume. Both players are in my top 10 faves and if anybody out there thinks they play guitar should listen to these dudes as a reality check and standard to shoot for! imo
AWESOME!!!!!!!! I've go my ticket for The crest Theatre in Sacramento on 8/2/07 I CAN'T WAIT! Thanks for posting this. Video looks proffesional, is this coming out for the public????
@jconstant ahaha *just to tell u* no one got out of key here o_O empozzible ahaha when one of the soloist call a certain key in a certain moment it means he is going to solo over a certain scale or substitute, it's just a hint **
@ZZDROSS You're dead right, Panos is an ANIMAL, in the best sense of the word.... I was lucky enough to catch him with RF and dang that boy rules the house.
@mmorper1987 they write soloing vehicles for themselves. like miles did (all blues, so what, most of the later stuff). it's their genre.scofield, metheny, carlton, ford . a few riffs, a few complex syncopated hits, a couple stops on a wild sounding chord, and then just play over a couple of chords. if it was misty or a beatle tune it wouldnt work like this does. not enough room to really do what they do best, blast endlessly creative bluesy funky riffs. think about it.
1st how long have you been playing? these 2 are seasoned veterans of the road for decades now...this makes me just want to practice more and more..learn more..read more therory..even tho i'm a 30 plus yr player..these 2 are amazing and 2 of my faves
Ahem. Looking at this, I guess I'm possibly partially to blame for the 'competition' thing, though unintentionally so. These guys are both amazing. Amazing! Can I play like this? Hah! Not even close. Can I appreciate different aspects of their styles? You bet. LC is older and perhaps more audibly seasoned. RF might be younger, but I dig his phrasing and articulation more in a way. Can I express an opinion? Why not? But I'll say it again: Both of these dudes are absolute monsters. Peace.
Sorry to disagree with you. Saw Larry many times in late 70s before he was shot. His playing was a bit more raw and rocked out. He was always a frustrated be bopper (he told me so in an interview), and his playing after he was shot is more refined and softer in comparison. Either way, he's one of the greats!
One of the best drummers on the scene today. MASSIVE feel. Not to mention the two guys messing around on the guitar... just saw them live last week. Great guys, absolutely zero BS attitude about them.
well, that's already 16 years ago.
i saw robben last month. still great.
2 of the greatest guitar players in history. food for thought: clearly a jazz player playing blues and a blues player playing jazz
A dream "pairing". I've been a fan of both for many years. This is is a feast of great playing by two masters of taste, phrasing and soul. Dig it! I wish we could see them down in Texas--y'all have a lot of fans down here...

There's a lot to be said for keeping a such simple groove so entertaining.
No matter how bad of a mood I'm in, this video never fails to change all of that. If I'm in a good mood to start with... Shit, it don't get no better.
Beautifully said, Laxer3232. This is true ensemble...where everyone listens and is suportive of the soloist, while at the same time having the freedom to stretch out however they choose within the parameters of their function in the music. Nothing more rewarding and satisfying.
Great sound on this recording...bravo...
Defence hell, These guys are incredible. Put on your phones and listen full blast. Any "Jones" for excellent guitar is met and exceeded with these two artists! Holy sh*t.
The best Rhythm guitarist in the world is Robben Ford!!! Incredible tone and dynamics
Just blows most everyone else away...Lot of posers out there that couldn't hold a candle...Amazing that Larry Carlton survived a random act of violence, being shot in the neck and left for dead....Comes back by God's grace and performs at a level beyond most...
larry has that feel that's really something special. one god job done
Larry on his iconic Gibson ES-335! Love the sound!!!
Great Stuff - 2 masters playing together, as good as it gets...
Groovey and smooth as a fine single malt!
Oh my God!... How can anybody play in that different, complementary and magnificient ways both?...
Now THIS is music....
Larry🎸🔥🔥
Robben Ford can set his drink anywhere he wants to!
I just saw them last night at the blue note in tokyo. It was SICK!!!!
these guys are smokin' !!!
Holy gawd, this obtuse and angular frame forces the soloists to deliver above and beyond the call of duty and damned if these mofos don't rise to the occasion. Respect.
i wish i had a dumble overdrive special!, that would make my life!
my new favourite song
Damn, this band is playing some tight funky sh*t. Its a great tune and really showcases how good it can be when these two great guitarists play together. Love Robben's tone and the diminished licks he plays and the outside stuff at 2:55 is really cool.
whoa...that's all I gotta say......AWESOME
top players, nothing to prove, humble, established. larry carlton plays a mean solo in a song called "point it up" :)
"Burnable" is a good name for it because its just like playing with fire or some other kind of power!
There's a lot to be said for keeping a simple groove so entertaining.
My god, what a amazing technique.
that chordal riff at 4:20 is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!
its not just robben and larry who are playing awesome, its the whole band...
exspecially the drummer and the bass player are playing an awesome groovy style and the organist is just playing a little bit but it allways fits perfect in my opinion
awesome!
Gotta love that Dumble tone!!
Just so classy.
This is it !!!
i`ve seen robben live with the same les paul...amazing.
Amazing!
out there, totally cool !
Oh yeah. That's a vibe.
You two play so great together. What a perfect blend of styles. Any chance you two will come to Sacramento CA soon? I wish!

If there is ONE concert I wish I was at....
I wish they can come to Hong Kong.

Robben is fire.
pretty cool.
Holy shit!
What it must be like to play with a rhythm section like this -- it would be great.
Its almost too much talent to comprehend. Just kidding. It's ducking perfect.
gib-funk, gotta love it.
It's out on CD as an import, but I don't think it's out on DVD yet. You can get it from CD baby for a pretty good price.
Carlton is a Top Dog , his son too !!
@maxwellph - he's telling Travis , "Db", which is the key the song is in. One of them got off key, but it's hard to tell which one.
This is too Heavy !!!!!
true professionals
Wickedly cool fill by Toss Panos at 7:00!!!!!!!
Thx :-)
Larry let Robben use it for the tour!

Where is this Venue? I just saw Larry at NYC Blue Note on 6/28/07 but Robben Ford & Keyboard wasn't there. Just a trio (guitar, bass, drum).
AWESOME!!!!!!!! I've go my ticket for The crest Theatre in Sacramento on 8/2/07 I CAN'T WAIT! Thanks for posting this. Video looks proffesional, is this coming out for the public????
@suegab7 why is larrys guitar louder? same when i saw them in jacksonville, britt theatre???????????????????
I love 1:43 when Robben realises he doesnt know what key to solo over. So he asks Travis !!
FUNKY !!!!!!!!
God Bless Gold Tops !
And Toss on drums !!
I love to watch him! he reminds me of my Dad who was one of Local 802's finest.
bluesy funky JAZZY riffs
if you like this one, check out "The Prince" by these same two...DARN fine guitar playing ...and we all watch in wonder.
...Holy sh!t..
isn't this the same les paul larry plays in the video with ritenour in tokyo? is it larry's or robben'a guitar then?

Chromatype
please show us a link to your videos as you are obviously amazing
Thanks
smokin' hot
@jconstant ahaha *just to tell u* no one got out of key here o_O empozzible ahaha

Yeah you have a good point to be honest. Apart from that though it was awesome!

what scales is he using from 1:58 to 2:02 ?

Lick using fragments of Auxiliary Dimished Blues scale @ 1: 54-1:59- typical of Robben -check him on Jing Chi Live w/ Jimmy Haslip & Vinnie Colaiutta
Just blows most everyone else away...Lot of posers out there that couldn't hold a candle...
Its slightly easier for Larry because the Bass player is his son Travis !!
So tasty. This is how I wanna play guitar...
that is the best tone out of a les paul ive ever heard, sounds like hes got a ross compressor. and i think hes saying his volumes too high
Already done that-need something new and challenging!
when was larry shot ?
