In this video I'm going to go over everything you need to know about this model so you can decide if its right for you. This is one of the best reviews i have seen. Almost all others focus mostly on gaming, which is of no use to me. The comparisons with 4K and the side by side/ different input devices was really great - as was mentioning things like how high the stand rises and the how deep the desk needs to be. It really gives a good indication, especially as you dont have a wall behind the monitor. thanks - this has been really useful

I really appreciate you doing such a detailed breakdown on this monitor, as I am seriously upgrading my work from home monitors to this monitor and maybe an addl normal 16:9 4k monitor as well... using a 2- two yr old AWs... a 34" ultra wide but only 1440p, and a 1080 27"... time to upgrade soon,
Using this same setup and want to upgrade to this 40 inch and a 27 4k in portrait.
I am not a tech person. I waited a year for this monitor to FINALLY come out. I was worried about it being too big. It fit my needed perfectly. Absolutely love this monitor. I am using it with the new Mac Studio M1 Max. Thunderbolt 4 ports for the win.
How is it with text clarity on a mac? I am on a M1 pro 14" and the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger is I was reading the text can be blurry in certain apps due to no app scaling in m1 silicone yet.
@@billmuertos I have the text scaled to the second largest setting and at 72 herts. It's looks very sharp to me.

Great review and thank you for the valuable info! Just to point out like others mentioned, it's actually 72hz not 60hz. Also, it's not 5k, it's 5k2k. Also, a 32inch 16:9 4k monitor has the same PPI of 139 as this one with 5k2k 21:9 at 40inches. Resolution is the main factor to determine text clarity but not the only one. Some screens look much better when it comes to text than others with the same pixel density. Have a nice day!
I noticed if you turn on "Thunderbolt On" will cap to 50hz
Between Dell S2722QC 68.6 cm (27") and this one, which one would you recommend as the best Text Clarity Monitor? I work a lot with chatting with clients in many different messengers as well as working a lot with Excels, so for me Text Clarity is the biggest factor.
@@konefsta3 considering the monitor you mention is 27 inches with 4k and an aspect ratio of 16:9, you get a PPI of 163, whereas this one give 139. (it's huge). I use it every day for programming and video editing, and it's the best thing I've ever seen... Of course the 27inch is much cheaper too.

@@konefsta3 sorry my bad. I use the 40 inch ultrawide for programming every day. It's great as I can stack 3 code files AND still have the devtools visible. I use another screen on the side to see my results (when I'm doing frontend). Technically the 27inch 4k has more PPI, which should be more readable, but it really depends on the screen as well. Also the 40 inch is not hurtingly bright, and allows me to put in a lot of hours in one sitting. I also sit a little further away which is better for the eyes. Once you go over 130 or close to 150 PPI, you'll have to get very close to see the pixels. I have very good vision. Have a nice day!
Remember this has the same pixel density as a 32" 4k monitor so it actually isn't any sharper from a resolution point of view. It's 5k2k rather than 5k in the same sense that the studio display is.
Exactly! I thought I was the only one catching this in this otherwise great review, when he compares the resolution of the 32" 4k LG with the 40" 5k Ultrawide display. Both have exactly the same resolution/PPI, the 5K one just adds more real estate to the sides. So whatever he did to compare both resolutions/displays side by side, he definitely did something wrong there, since they both have the exact same PPI.
Its a 2160P display clearly making it a 4K ultrawide, that's what it should be called, the stupid term "5k2k" is even worse as "2K" refers to several 1080P cinema spec formats. The DPI of this display is not even close to a 2880P(5K) display which is 5120 x 2880, note the pixel count difference vertically that's what really matters.
I think the 34" version is the sweet spot / balance in terms of sheer size and pixel density
Easy, he wasn't using the 4K display in its native resolution. He's mixing inches with pixels which are two very different things that can be totally independent. Anyway, the thing with 5k2k monitors (all actual displays are made by LG) is that they do not physically support scaling as typical 4k monitors would. On a 4K, a Mac would just go into the recommonded scaled resolution. On a 5K2K such as this, Macs go full native (tested on the Lenovo version).

I was going through the same issue as you , struggling to find a proper review on this monitor , and I'm pretty sure the video in the other language you found was the "LG Taiwan" channel video lmao. Either way - love the review - buying the monitor today - My other choice was the (LG 38wn95c-w) But the extra 2" in screen real estate and 5K is worth the extra money. Coincidence i found this video the day you posted it. Keep up the great reviews.
lol I totally agree with you on all fronts. The one in another language was so frustrating. I was debating on the same exact thing, extra few inches and 5k all the way. I don’t think you will be disappointed, I love it. What are you going to be using it for primarily?

BTW, you can use it with MacBook Air M1 (Monterey 12.3.1) at full 5120x2160.
You can only mirror displays with the exact same size ration. Otherwise the picture is distored.

Similar to the other comment, I was comparing this monitor with the LG (38wn95c-w), as much as I love the overall specs, my worry is that for day to day work like browsing web pages, I'd have to scale things up since the native solution will make the texts too small. But scaling can make things tricky. I love the thunderbolt 4 and the ability to make the monitor a dock as well as daisy chaining other thunderbolt monitors, that's why I wish the LG 38wn95c-w will be updated with TB4, and the 3840x1600 resolution on that one may work better without the need to scale. Still this monitor is great, a beast for productivity and perfect for one cable setup. Thanks again for the review!
I still prefer the 5K x 2K with text set to large on Ubuntu to a 38" 3840x1600 non-scaled. The text is sharper and it has quite much more screen estate, inputs are more modern. However, not everyone needs that kind of screen estate: the somewhat smaller 38" display is a physically better size and doesn't need scaling, so it's indeed a more optimal solution. Yet that resolution, sharpness and screen estate is addictive. Color calibration is a must.
Difficult to choose . Is 60 hz smooth enough ? I am using 144 hz 2k monitor all along
@@MrLaurichu I'm using both 4k 60hz and 2k 144hz at same time, not on gaming, most of the time and for most people you wouldn't feel irritating to change from 144hz to 60z
Great review. It was extremely informative. Are you able to adjust brightness and volume within MacOS or do you need to adjust from the monitor? Also, have you heard of a free app called Monitor Control that some people have used to make it work on MacOS? Thanks.
I don't have the specific model of the video, but my LG monitor also does not adjust brightness and volume from the keyboard/settings of macOS. I've used Monitor Control for awhile, and then I switched to Display Buddy. They both work fine, but Display Buddy if I'm not mistaken is paid (I don't remember anymore). If you don't want to pay, Monitor Control is great and works perfectly.
Speakers are not very good, I do not use them. You need add software to control volume with the Mac kbd. Brightness is too low, I have it always on 100%, cannot be adjusted via Mac kbd, you need add. software for that too. Also get SwitchRes (shareware) to unlock full 5k resolution on the Mac, some do not offer that. MB Air M1 with Thunderbolt works but with HDMI its limited, also my 2020 iMac 27" does not offer 5k with MacOS itself, need that shareware. So 100$ extra for shareware an a set of speakers for the LG. But the big desktop is great. Also get the shareware Magnet to arrange windows.
Awesome video. Can I use a single mouse and keyboard if I don't want to run split screen between my two connected PC's? The work PC will be connected via Thunderbolt 3 while my personal will be connected via DisplayPort and I'll plug the mouse and keyboard into the 2 USB ports on the side of the monitor. I don't want split screen - just to change input source while using the same mouse and keyboard attached to the monitor.

I've been looking for a 4K 32" monitor but, coming across your video I'm leaning towards this LG UltraWide. I do use FCPX along with ON1 Photo Raw for editing. As you stated and showed, I wouldn't want to use the HDMI. I have a ton of video with 2/3rd's SDR and the other being HDR. I have a couple questions if I may; Have you done both SDR and HDR editing on this monitor, if so, how was it? In regards to scaling, how is this monitor for surfing the web or any other everyday use with Mac applications, especially when it come to text? Thanks again, you did an awesome job!! 👍😊
Currently, I'm leaning toward the Apple Studio Display mainly due to resolution. I would love to use this LG in split screen in FCPX with one side being my preview window with the other being all of the FCPX windows. It appears that 3840x2160 may not be retained on both halves. Another concern is refresh rate and of course the blacks as mentioned. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

I'd be interested in some advice. I was an Intel i7 Mac Mini owner and I've just upgraded to a Mac Mini M2 Pro. The monitor used with both machines in an ageing (8 years old??) Samsung S34E790C (3400 x 1400) 34" UW monitor. With the old Mini it was connected via lightning to HDMI dongle, with the new M2 Mini I'd had to switch to using HDMI as the M2 Mini 'sees' the monitor being 'switched off' when it goes to sleep. This means that when it wakes the screen any apps that are open resize / reposition to the bottom left of the screen - which drove me nuts!
So I'm therefore looking for a new monitor, ideally I guess a 34" (or larger) would be preferred connected via Thunderbolt. I consume a lot of media and like to have a lot of windows open on screen so 27" is too restrictive.
I've been considering the forthcoming Dell Ultrasharp 32" 6K monitor but I feel it'll be too expensive, or the 49" Samsung Odyssey G959C. I think I may be going overboard here. Also considering the 32" BenQ PD3220U 4K IPS display.
I guess a UW 5k display would be perfect and this monitor looks to be a good solution that ticks all the boxes??

How does this monitor handle scaled resolutions on the M1 Apple platform? I have a had a lot of issues with this on my LG 34BK95U-W. There seems to be a well known lack of support for scaled resolutions on ultra wide monitors with the M1 chips. I had to run BetterDummy to solve this. From my experience most people can't run a 2160 resolution without scaling the OS a bit. Maybe this monitor is SO large that you don't need to?

It should work at full res (no scaling) with Monterey 12.3.1 or later and the Thunderbolt 4 port.
Can you please tell me how to get 5K resolution on the screen? On my iMac display setup I can not find a resolution higher than 3440 x 1440. The text on the LG ultra wide monitor are blurry and the colours are terrible. Is it because the iMac (although it is 5K) can not handle a higher resolution? Do you use a HDMI 5K or 8K cable? is not everything too small at the native resolution of 4k? Can you comfortably use that monitor without applying any scaling? And if you do apply scaling does not that defeat the purpose of having a crisp screen?
If you want to save money, or try the experience out without paying, you can use Barrier instead of Synergy. I am in no way affiliated to that project, but it s a free and open-source alternative that might be worth checking out. I'd rather spend $30 on a nice cable or something if I can get the same softwere experience for free.
If you do PBP, but not split it in half... what resolution do you get on them? I would guess: 3200x2160 and 1920x2160... is that correct?
I have the older 34” version and one issue I had with the PBP feature was that I couldn’t have thunderbolt (Mac) on one side and DisplayPort (PC) not he other side. It only allowed HDMI on the other side. Has that been fixed with this version?
How much watts does it use. And what is the next down size 32?
I was interested in this for my new Mac, but then I read and saw that it wasn't much to have. The problem was the resolution itself. not compatible with Mac. Finder, icons, menus in programs, etc. become microscopic. if you don't run upscaled which both takes the GPU and lowers the resolution and makes everything look just downscaled.
Can you control the brightness from your MacBook ? I can't figure how? I dont want to be going onto the LGs button to lower the brightness

5K2K is not optimal for Macs. You can use it in full resolution as used in this video, but the text and icons are way too small for most people. The other option Apple uses in Retina display is to divide native resolution pixels by 2. So the height options would be 2160 pixels or 1080 pixels. Both of them are bad options. Apple Studio Display is a real 5K (height also) monitor and it shows the picture as 1440 which is considered optimal in most situations. You should be able to use this monitor in 1440 pixel height, but it will be scaled and not as sharp and it would use a bit more resources on the mac. This video could have included tests for the other resolutions also like 1440 which most would use.

I have been using this monitor for a couple of months now and can confirm that it is not ideal for using with a mac. The PC scales it very nicely and makes it a great productivity monitor. On Mac the text and everything else is too small. But there is still a good place of usage for this - for example if you want to learn software like Motion etc and need to split the screen to watch tutorials etc at the same time and replicate what is being taught. All in all is a good monitor and I wouldn't have chosen another one in retrospect.
agree but the 1440 monitors looks like trash! blurry text etc. I need to install BetterDisplay app and make it just a little better, I have the ASUS PRO ART CV 27 and I hate how the text looks etc. and this is one of the best 1440 monitors on the market.

I had this with the 2018 MacBook and couldnt get the scaling correct...The 5k2k was too small text and the next option the text was too big. What are you using for scaling?
Just got mine today, Hooked up to a Mac with Thunderbolt port.. Questions. 1. Some of the options are greyed out. The picture modes, several not available. Why? 2. The fonts are very small. I can live with it, but would find it easier if I could make them a bit larger. 3. I just noticed that this TH-cam video got blurry and stalled a bit. That never happened on the iMac. Hello HightTechCheck, I noticed if I turn on "Thunderbolt Out On" is limited to 50hz if I turn off the "Thunderbolt Out Off," it goes back to 72hz. Are you seeing the same problem?

This 40 inch monitor has PBP feature with 2 options, one being 1:1 and the other 2:1. What about 38 inch monitor? I have 38WN95 monitor, and it seems the functions are the same. However my 38'' monitor doesn't have 2:1 ratio PBP feature. It only has 1:1 PBP function. Should I upgrade the firmware or something? Or it's just the limitation, and the new 40'' has more options?
I figured the text would be sharp, but the text looks so small I have no idea how you can read it. Price is nuts, I went with LG 43" for $596 and got more height and width at 4k. Plus a remote which is handy for volume & brightness control.

I am thinking about buying this beast but having to use it with a macbook and knowing that scaling does not work well on Macs I am worried that the scaling will defeat the purpose of having a great resolution, and think that I might be better served by a LG 38wn95c-w that with the 3840x1600 resolution might not need any scaling... does anyone has any thoughts or advice on that?

Got one to display 2 maps and it never worked. Get on saying no signal. Would not connect to a Desktop tower and a Windows laptop. So sent it back.
Running this with the native solution seems not really viable when using it primarily for text based tasks like coding. Sharpness is known to suffer with macOS scaling with scaling factors unequal to 1 or 2. Using 2x scaling kind of defeats the purpose of the screen (having lots of screen estate). How severe is the sharpness loss when using a scaled resolution that is a good trade-off between screen estate and text size in your opinion. Thanks!

Hi, the fact that the MacBook pro is always charging doesn't affect the battery life in the long term?
Macs since os 10.15 have smart charging so leaving it plugged in is fine.
And now please OLED version with 120+ hz

I'm tempted to get this BUT I'm worried about scaling and fuzzy/pixelated text. I have a 16" M1 Macbook Pro. I just bought a 34" BenQ ultrawide and the text fuzziness/pixelation is terrible (1440). It's like looking at a monitor from 15 years ago.
This has way more pixels. 1440p is really barely a step up in resolution. I never understood why people cared about it. Also, MacBooks are very very specific as to what monitors work with them, if you don't have a monitor that hits their exact pixel density that they want, then the computer has to resize everything. I don't really get why Apple does it this way, it hurts your performance, but that's the Apple Way. The performance lost may not matter to you but I would go look up more about it but otherwise High resolutions like this don't usually suffer from any fuzziness, 1440p is kind of a joke

Can anyone who has this monitor, share with me, how high is this thing when you put it on your desk with a stand, and lower it down as low as possible? Need to know that for my setup which has some narrow vertical space.

Should be 49" ultra wide and 7680x2160 (dual 4k) for all productivity like programming and i buy it for upto 1500 euro.
Why would the 5K be sharper? They're both 2160 lines. This is a stretched 32in 4K, same ppi. The other monitor may just suck, but not because of pixel density.

Same PPI, friend. It's not 5k, as 5k is 2880px vertically. Both your 32" 4k and this have 2160px vertically and identical PPI.
Visually, this is exactly the same as taking a 32" 4k monitor and widening it by an extra 33%
Bought one of these. Set it up and everything was great. After a few hours only half the display works. Any help?
In the half of the display that shows, do you see everything you are supposed to or is it cut off? Did you try a different connection, ie hdmi, display port, usb c? There is a setting to do split screen as well, maybe it’s enabled?

Yea unfortunately they dont have a high brightness but unless your in direct sunlight you should be ok. I havent had any issue with mine in my studio.
hi...if I connect it to my M1 MacBook Pro 16" and shutdown the computer, when I turn on the monitor will it also turn on the Mac or do I have to open the laptop again.
You just need to give your keyboard or mouse a wake-up tap, which you will need to anyway for the bluetooth to reconnect. But no, you don’t need to open the Mac again, my MB 16inch M1 Max lives permanently on a pull-out type metal tray under the desk in clamshell mode.
Would have been a banger if 120Hz but 72Hz is just not enough, 90Hz is bare minimum for smoothness.

Good video but how ridiculous that a monitor this expensive and supposedly so well-specced doesn't have HDMI 2.1??? Not everyone can use Thunderbolt and for current-gen console connections the 2.1 is needed to get 4k /120fps.

@@Wilayaat Ah, i see. Well I'd want this more if it supported this as well since I casually game also. Unfortunately it looks like tech just hasn't gotten there yet. I have a HDMI 2.1 4lk 32" BenQ monitor and that's currently the biggest high refresh 2.1 screens we have right now besides the TVs (LG C1 - which I tried and returned). It looks like Samsung is also releasing a 32" curved 4k monitor called the Neo G8 later this year, but that's still far from the 40" we have here. I'd guess it'll be another 3 years or so until we have ultrawide high-refresh 4k monitors available.
@@cheesychester9647- Can I ask why you returned the LG C1? I'm considering getting the 43" Samsung QLED Q90B (for gaming, streaming and work) which I know is a different thing to the LG but be interested to know why you didn't keep it.
@@Wilayaat Nice! A backstory, I had 2x C1 OLEDs and returned both. I now have an 85” QLED tv in my family room (that also replaced a C1 65”) and it’s nice and bright. OLED is fantastic and the colors/contrast are unmatched, but the glare is real in a bright room and the HDR up so close as a monitor honestly hurt my eyes. I used the 48” C1 for the desk for about a week before i returned it; it was huge and switching between console gaming to PC for work and FPS games was a pain since I couldn’t move the tv closer or further back. I’d say the 42” C2 looks much more promising since it’d be easier to mount on a monitor arm. Still, anything above 32” feels wrong as a flatscreen and can be quite eye-fatiguing with prolonged usage. For me, I’m happy with a bigger QLED in my living room since it gets brighter and can’t burn in and also happier with a 32” 4k 144hz monitor at my desk since it’s on a monitor arm and saves space, doesn’t burn my eyes, and has no chance of burn in.
