  • In this video, I review and tell you why you should get the 40'' Curved UltraWide 5K2K Nano IPS Monitor with Thunderbolt 4 instead of the Apple Studio Display!
    Purchase this amazing display here 👉🏼 amzn.to/395lnx6
    I recommend this monitor arm 👉🏼 amzn.to/3swtzNN
    Download my desktop background here: bit.ly/3P5nn9b
    UPDATE: on my Mac Pro, the resolution scaling is FIXED when you have an MPX Module installed and running a second 5K display (like the LG 5K Ultrafine, or Apple Studio Display). I am not sure why, but now I can run this scaled at 3840x1620 and it's so much better.

    Your voice and cadence is a breath of fresh air. Very relaxing. Subbed. This display looks like a great alternative to a 40+ inch 4K TV like the LG C2 series to use as a monitor. I still haven't ruled out that option, but seeing this 40" 5K2K display makes it harder to choose.

    Really enjoyed this review. So many youtubers use the 'what's up guys!!!!' formula with the loud videos, electronic music in the background, and super saturated neon colors. This is just you sitting and talking in a nice office environment. The contrast is a pleasure to watch vs other videos in my opinion.
    Any I just felt I had to say this since so many tech youtubers use the same approach to their reviews. Nice work.

    Man, i love your reviews with the absolute chilled mood and how you speak clearly. You would be a very very good psychological therapist 😂 I would come to the point. I got a 27" iMac late 2017. And i have the 14" MacBook Pro M1 Max. When i heard that the Mac Studio comes out i thought: Shut up and take my money Apple. But i am absolutely not satisfied with the Studio Display price. I am so sad that i cant connect my macbook to the imac display (luna display is no option for me). But... the longer i search for a good monitor, the more i come to the conclusion, that i should buy ONLY a monitor and connect my macbook m1 max to that, before buying the standard mac studio. So right now i am seaching for a monitor for the next 5-6 month until that LG is avaiable in germany, without paying possible custom fees (when ordered outside of germany) or any other display with at least 5k. I love the display from my iMac and i think it will be hard for me to look in any other display, without comparing it all the time with my imac display. the huawei mateview GT 34 is my first option to go with for the next 5-6 month. but i never saw the display in real life. would you still recommend this display or do you have any other recommendations for the short period. I am working as a graphic and webdesigner, with heavy work in photoshop, lightroom, after effects, indesign and visual studio code. thank you and again thumbs up for one of the best presentations i saw for reviews. you could talking senseless things near me and i would come down immediately because of your speed 😂

    Good review there Johnny, I have also subscribed as your style is great. A question ... you have previously reviewed the 38WN95C / U3818DW. The decision I'm trying to resolve is deciding between 38WN95C / U3821DW (not the 3818) / and now maybe this one ?. I'm currently using 2 x U2722DE (I find the overall width of 2 x 27" too wide). I'm non creative, more programming and office but want/need the extra real estate, currently PC but will have a M1 MacBook Pro soon . Thoughts ?

    Hi, thank you for this review ! I am looking for a good monitor for an M1 mac, and so far this is my best target. But I am also into gaming (not competitive, but still, I have a Shadow PC and a Switch linked to the monitor). Currently I have a Gigabyte 1ms monitor, and I wonder if I will suffer the difference with this 5ms monitor. What do you think about that ? And do you have ideas of other monitors with the same spec (140ppi min, HDR, Thunderbolt 4) AND with gaming specs ? (1ms, 140hz), even with higher prices ?
    Thanks again !

    - does it work with macOS auto brightness?

    - does it have any KVM features?

    I love this display! I got one to replace a LG 27” 5K and a LG 24” 4K (in vertical orientation). I use it for software development at native resolution (I already need reading glasses). I was initially concerned because of the “low” max brightness (I got spoiled by Apple’s and the LG 5K & 4K displays), but this has not been an issue. You can get customized resolutions by using SwitchResX (I love this utility). Thank you for the review!

    • @hippy3000

      So the brightness is not that low in practice?

    • @dudaoutloud
      @dudaoutloud 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hippy3000 for my use case (software development and not photo or video work), the brightness is good. I am using it with my 16” M1 Max MBP. I would say the LG’s relative brightness at max brightness is about the same as the MBP’s at about 65-70%, which works for me and my office environment.

    • @_sky_3123
      @_sky_3123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait, so you managed to solve scaling issues by using some program? Did it cost you?

    • @RichardOrtega85
      @RichardOrtega85 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dudaoutloud in practice it feels like 65-70% of the 1000-nit sustained brightness on the miniLED? I’m a software engineer and looking at this vs studio display (600 nits). I’m by a window so worried about washing out

    • @dudaoutloud
      @dudaoutloud 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichardOrtega85 On the 16” MBR, SDR content only goes up to 500 nits (the macOS desktop and applications all render in SDR - I do not do anything with videos that would trigger the XDR 1000 nit brightness - although I believe there is a utility out there to force the display to go up to the 1000 nits for normal desktop/SDR content). So using normal apps in MacOS my estimation of the 5K 40” UW being 70% of the MBP SDR 500 brightness. I do not have a window facing the screen (my window is on the backside of the monitor) so I cannot say if it will be washed out in your setup. For me, the brightness is more than adequate for development tasks. I would set your MBP to 65-70% brightness and see if the display is washed out. If it is, then any the 40” LG might get washed out as well.

    Hello Duda,
    I currently have a MacBook Air M2 and may be upgrading to the M3 when it comes out this year.
    I also have two workstations (photographer, graphic designer) at two addresses 1000km apart (Switzerland and France) and I appreciate being able to travel with the very light MBA.
    The problem is that it is impossible to rotate two screens at the same time. I have just discovered this LD Ultrawide screen on the internet which could replace two screens but I wonder if I will adapt to a slightly lower sharpness in the texts. This is an important point for me. You were in the same situation what do you think?

      @@JohnnyMcPro Why do you help people with topic you know absolutely nothing about? You losing power, a lot of power. If you are a professional photographer or videographer, learn something about PPI and scaling of MAC first. It will cost you like 30% of your Mac performance, because when you use scaled UI, the Mac needs to actually upscale the resolution, so it can lower it afterward. I was considering a 49-inch 5120x1440 monitor to secure a multitask work space, but the problem is that the vertical monitor length and resolution is limited (1440 - 36cm). Now, I’m exploring possibilities to use this 40-inch display with large vertical work space as the main monitor for multitask, together with a smaller 27 inch sub monitor which has similar vertical length.
    I will use the sub monitor for MT4 (Forex software) and check it once every hour. That’s why I prefer this independent display + 40WP95C-W setup in stead of 49 inch super ultra wide monitor.

    Don't buy from B&H! Their otherwise-standard 30-day return policy excludes monitors 37" or larger. Even if B&H has a slightly lower price, it's probably worth it to spend a little more to not risk being stuck with a ~$1700 monitor you don't like. You can research these super-ultrawides all day long but you won't know if it'll work for you until you buy it and set it up at your desk.

    From what I know using scaling on mac uses a lot of GPU power, so if the mac seems to be slower than before, that might be the case. Mac OS works optimally at 100% or 200% scaling, so the best display for them should have 110 ppi or 220. I use a 3440x1440 display and I wanted to upgrade to 5120x2160, but because of what I said earlier I thnk I'll have to buy a 38" 3840x1600.

    • @sunjason8496
      @sunjason8496 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      your right, I use LG UP850, on original resolution, things are too small. When I down scale to 1440, seem fine, but the graphic perfomence of APP is definitely lower。 More recommend 38" 3840x1600 or 40“ a little bit higher。

  • @rafaelcordoba13
    @rafaelcordoba13 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem is that you can’t run this native 4K. Everything is too small. And if you run scaled on Mac, it’s not as good as retina 5k Apple Studio Display. Plus you get a performance hit on the GPU.

    I think it's very important to note that this monitor will not work for those who are next to sunny windows. I'm a UX/UI designer and my white #FFFFFF literally looks like a light grey cause this monitor is not bright enough. It will, however, work for anyone who is in a dim room with brightness at 100% or anyone outside of design. This monitor is just a BEAST. I love everything else about it aside from the brightness issue.

    still feel like the studio display is a better option for macs (if you can find it in stock). it's not only sharper but it has a higher resolution than the LG since this is only 5k in width, but still has the same pixel height count of a 4k monitor. the studio display scales perfectly without having use an awkward simulated scale that uses up some GPU resource so your performance will drop.

    • @_sky_3123

      Hi, I would want to ask for advice. You say the MacBook GPU performance will drop here due to scaling. But what will happen with the quality of picture? Will I still have the same crisp text I would otherwise expect from this monitor If I was running it on Windows machine?

    • @DarrinLin
      @DarrinLin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@_sky_3123 it will look fine but there will be some slight areas where things like text won’t look as crisp. the GPU is scaling and rendering UI to a fake resolution buffer which is why you get the message that says display scaling can affect performances

  • @cyberman8080
    @cyberman8080 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    How does the text clarity compare with the LG 38WN95C? I presume you used the 38” in its native 3840x1600? Wouldn’t that be better than using the 40” in 3360x1417 mode?
    I guess I’m not exactly sure what the Mac scaling does. Perhaps it only affects text and icon size, rather than losing the detail when editing a photo or video (or does scaling really mean you get less pixels on the screen?).
    I don’t expect either the 38 or 40” to be as amazing as my 27” iMac.

    • @JohnnyMcPro
      @JohnnyMcPro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. On a Mac, the scaling emulates a resolution of say 3360x1417, but it's still running the display at full resolution. In other words, it scales up the UI of Mac OS to resemble the lower resolution.

    • @cyberman8080

      all it really means is that it has over 5000 pixels on the long end, in this case the width - so the resolution being 5120 x 2160 means it's really a 5K/2K display - so yea, technically they can use that as a selling point.

  • @bugged1212
    @bugged1212 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 140 PPI, to compare it to Apple Studio Display does not make sense at all. And if the PPI does not matter to you and your eyes can't notice it, that's great, save the money. But me being a designer/developer, I notice pixels out of place and with the Studio Display it's close to perfect. Though I would ideally want an even higher PPI.

    • @markeissler
      @markeissler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 140PPI there is no appropriate scaling level available in macOS (on M1) to make use of these displays without losing a ton of real estate. Scaling down from native 5k gets you LESS space than an equivalent 34" 21:9 display (like the old LG 34UM95 which is 109PPI). That to me makes no sense. macOS really wants to see a doubling of pixels (e.g. from 109PPI to 218PPI....that's really where that number comes from) and anything else is going to result in scaling issues possibly with increased load on the GPU. In other words, macOS doesn't like 4K at all.

    • @LetsBuildThatApp

      At native 5k on studio display you can only open two large windows comfortably. Editing a large video timeline isn’t as easy as widescreens. For design work I do recommend apple studio display.
