CLARIFICATION: The bike is a 63.5 deg head tube angle or 64 depending on where you put the flip chip of the shock. I know, I screwed this up when talking.
Have seen so many people long shocking the evo to match the bikes geo. Thing wants to go so fast but the rear end just cant keep up when stock. Have also seen a few coils which reduces the harshness a little. Great review!
Note the 27.5 evo has 150 mil of travel in the rear, and a carbon edition as well. I swapped the air spring in my fork as well to bump it to a 160 mil so it could handle chunky stuff better. It helped a lot.

It was also reviewed for VitalMTB, which is a more gravity centric website. I am taking their audience into account when doing a review. I'm not sure I could babble on anymore with respect to climbing. Its an efficient 140mm bike with a low BB. You'll smack some pedals, but otherwise it climbs great. Climbing, after all, has a lot more to do with the motor (the bike rider) than the bike. I promise.
@@chadtague6429 I'll make a video when the weather here in new Hampshire breaks. But I can do a short write up. To be fair i didn't ride these bikes stock. They were both built with enve m70s ohlins coil and lyrik rc2. I do believe the suspension GREATLY holds these bikes back. I have ridden the evo 2 or 3 times and nothing at speed where it would shine. But as far as I can tell it climbs as well as the LT or better, I have cleaned every section that I usually struggled with. I believe it is to so with the longer chainstays giving better traction, and the seat tube angle is incredibly important. The s2 compared to the medium doesn't feel crazy either. I don't even notice that it is 3 degrees slacker. It still feels like a trail bike (somewhat playful and nimble) but also can smash stuff. @@gweflj sorry I meant the suspension that is spec'd on the bikes until you get to s works. I went from the 34 rhythm and a dps to a lyrik rc2 and an ohlins coil and it wasnt even the same bike anymore. Big company hesitant to go all in on "radical" new geometry? Maybe worried selling a trail bike with 63.5-64 deg HTA to their customers used to 67deg on this bike would be hard?
Great review Jeff! How do you feel the Stumpy EVO is compared to the Transition Sentinel? Geo is pretty close and suspension travel is the same in the rear and only 10mm different out front. BTW Tucker is such an awesome trail dog!!!🤘🏼
Good question @Steven_Bikes - Answer: The Sentinel feels like it has a LOT more travel than the Evo. The Sentinel also goes through the latter part of its travel a bit quickly for my tastes but I have a custom damper to help with that. I do think the geo is close, but did go too far with my XL Sentinel. L was more appropriate to keep F/R weight distribution in check.
Did you say EVO only offered in aluminum? Is that just from the 2019 builds? I'm looking at these deciding on one, and all the EVO's I see are available in carbon. They start w/the Comp at $4100. May have to get something else for this season coming up though because specialized is saying that I'd have to WAIT for a 2021. Bike industry took a bad hit this last season and NOTHING seems to be available. 2 great bikes you have there! ~JSV
As a tester I had the opportunity to throw a leg over a number of bikes. My current steed is a Sentinel that is slightly longer travel than normal and it feels like a completely different bike than the Evo despite having similar travel. Also raced a Trek Slash which was excellent less Trek mucking it up. I will likely buy a Canyon Torque or similar for rowdy races or races I'm going in 100% blind. I'm a 6'2" 200lbs rider racing pro but working behind a desk most days. I mention that as I think it plays into the equation heavily.
@@JeffreyJim09 I have a sentinel and it's definitely the fastest bike I've ridden! Would love to try a slash but I'm pretty sure it's going to be cramped because the sentinel's reach is literally perfect for me. Thanks for the info!
You could, but really the special sauce of the Evo is the chainstay length, slacker headtube all combined with the longer reach. I said it in the review and I'll say it again, the Evo is the bike I'd pick if I were buying a Stumpy - price not even considered.
Although most large MTB trail bikes are around 470-480 reach... unlike the 455 Stumpy... those bikes typically come with about a 2° steeper seat tube angle. It’s a give take... gotta ride one to feel the dif
Bullshit!!! This guy has no idea 🤦♂️🤦♂️The evo is amazing!! I brought one and then after riding mine a mate who had a enduro sold it and brought one. I also sold my demo because I didn't need it after buying a evo. I also ride at black mountain, revs and bike park wales doing all the blacks and reds. Keeping happily with mates on downhill bikes. Shocking review saying it isn't as good as a enduro bike on the down hill 🤬🤬
whaaat ?? i'd say Stumpjumper EVO is quite expensive looking at that poor spec ... (yes, it's a steal, Spesh steals money from you...) for example: Transition Bikes, i'd expect to be more expensive (from small brand etc.), but no, Patrol or Scout start from 2999$ and have better spec than this Spesh !!!!
How is it expensive? A Transition Sentinel NX alloy is $3200. Pretty close to the Evo. You end up with a worse fork (Yari), worse brakes (guide), and a heavier bike. Anytime I can buy a bike for under $4K, change no parts other than tires and never think again about the parts spec, its a good buy IMO.
@@JeffreyJim09 No kidding Jeff. I just purchased a 2019 Stumpy Comp Alloy, for an end of year blowout price. Bike was a steal and had to have it as my first mtb(im a bmx rider). I have absolutely flogged on this bike. It's insane how tough it is and how I literally don't want to change anything except adding a bunch of volume spacers to the fork and the biggest one for the dps rear shock. Everyone says Spez is too expensive for the components they spec, but I couldn't find a single bike within my entire state spec'd similarly with similar geometry for less. I'm not sure I believe all the Spez haters anymore it seems to me their bikes are NOT more expensive in comparison to the other brands.

Best with high setting and rear coil. The dpx2 sucked!
I don't undersand how to set the angle. Where is the flip chip ?
that trail dog got some megga corner skills
A well trained dog is a blast to go o rides with. They're in heaven running and you're totally geeked you're out riding.

Why put the better geo on the aluminum frame?
Easier for Specialized to make alterations to a jig than produce all new molds. Aluminum is great btw!
Carbon coming soon. but given I keep breaking carbon frame it will stick with my aluminium evo thanks 👍

Try the evo with a coil shock and all those problems go away. Turns into an enduro machine
So you bottom out faster?
