    I just realized last night that I’ve been riding my 19 evo s3 in the low position for the last three months since I bought it. I’ve never owned a bike with a flip chip, and wasn’t given a manual when I bought it. I even asked the salesman what position it was in and he said high. It’s not super obvious and it did actually look like the marks indicated the high setting. I thought the bike handled great and climbed well ect all along but it was a bit low, I live in Pennsylvania with (a lot) of climbing. I only really noticed when crossing logs ect or riding really tech climbing. After flipping the chip around it feels like a totally different bike, it handles much better and sits much higher ect. It climbs better and is all around much better for tight singletrack. The high setting addressed any little annoyance I had with it, and improved things I didn’t realize could be better. The terrain I ride in pa and wv is very similar to what they have in the northwest, and this bike definitely fits the bill when faced with steep rock drops or hills you can barley walk down all without being to much machine for regular trail duty. I don’t care much for plowing trough high speed rock gardens so have 150/140 is perfect for me, I’ve taken it off of some pretty big 6-8ft drops and it lands smoother than a house cat.

    I think it's just about your riding style - if you like to go fast, no matter on what trail and precisely catch the race lines - a more aggressive geometry is the way to go. But if you like to pop, jump, manual, jibb, flick, whip and just be creative on the bike and the feature - not saying 'the trail' - (or maybe you're just riding mellower stuff) nothing beats the feeling of a (reasonable) steep and short bike.
    Most people seem to prefer the first version which influences the market. That makes it harder for people who like the second version better and many of these people ride bikes that are more aggressive than they'd need.
    Therefore I think it's great to see brands like Cannondale provide a more 'fun' and flickable bike with their Habit.

    I took it one step further. I have owned both these bikes. Medium Carbon LT SJ with ohlins coil, 51mm 160mm lyrik and enves in low. Bought an S2 evo alloy frame and put the same components on it, I do run it in high . I like the evo better for sure. And I even think it climbs better than the standard bike because of the longer chainstays. I also dont believe that the evo is any less poppy because the linkage is (or feels) even more progressive than the standard stumpy. Furthermore the steeper seat tube compensates for the longer reach of the evo. It dosent feel crazy it doesn't do anything weird. I just feels like a better version of the standard bike. And I trail ride it locally in New England and frequent highland mountain bike park and pedal up. Rant over.

      100% agree. I used to own an antidote which had 170mm travel. Was like a rocket on the steep alpine downs and really poppy.........however. I dont actually live in the alps. My local rides are in the UK Derbyshire peak district where theres killer climbs full of massive rocks and roots with rocky, techy vertical decents. Back at home the antidote climbed and bobbed like a pig. Pedal strikes where every 20 seconds on the rocky climbs and I was always way behind when eventually reaching the top of the hills. Now I ride a kona process 111 (29er) with 130mm front and 110mm rear travel. Climbs decent, no petal strikes. Still goes quick on the decents and rolls over nearly everything. Much more of an all round bike and much more fun because of it. I've even taken it on uplift days on DH black runs. Yes I'm not as fast as a DH bike but I have loads of fun on it and surely having fun is the whole point of riding?

    I think it all comes down on your definition of fun: if you like to goof around, pop off of things, choose lines at slower speeds with pin point accuracy, then get the shorter bike.
    If your fun consists of plowing, feeling more stable and planted and not getting airborne that much, go with the longer bike.
    In an ideal world, you could ride both styles of bikes on different trails with customizable geo (flip chip, rear drop outs, anglesets, etc)

    I agree with Levy. Or I’m somewhere in between the two. Most people’s bikes are way more aggressive than they could ever ride, that just means they aren’t getting the full experience.
    It’s like a Miata vs a 911.
    Miata you can run to its limit everyday

    • @Jeppelelle
      @Jeppelelle 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      That makes no sense, and whats up with the "full experience" argument? Take your Miata vs 911 example for instance. Yes, most can run a Miata on its limit and some of them can't run a 911 on its limit BUT even if people only can use 70% of a 911 capability, the 911 is still faster, more fun, more exiting, more and better EVERYTHING than the Miata. Also, if you are at the limit with a Miata, you have no where to improve, your limit becomes the car itself, not YOU, whereas if you currently only can use 70% of the capability of the 911, you will learn and improve and eventually work your way up to 100% on the 911, and then the 911 is a shit-ton more fun than a crappy Miata. Same with bikes and thats why people end up with 10 bikes, because they "grow out" of them since if you are as good as your bike, you cant improve anymore, then people have to buy a bigger, faster and better bike, wasting money and resources.

  • @The.JZA.
    @The.JZA. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Both bikes are awesome but it completely depends on what terrain you’re on and what type of rider you are. I own the Stumpjumper Comp Carbon 29 and I love it. It’s poppy, playful and has nimble handling. When I go on really steep terrain I feel like I could do with a slacker bike but most of the terrain I ride is single track or less intense downhill so for me it’s perfect. One thing to note is that people with a bad lower back could have trouble with longer bikes. I always get horrific lower back ache when I ride a long bike so the conservative geometry of the regular Stumpjumper is perfect for me.

  • @chadclark2070
    @chadclark2070 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great comparison guys!! Both are right I think, everyone likes different things. I do have the Carbon Stumpy 29er in medium, I bought it as a ST then converted it to LT. Just doing that transformed the bike, now I'm way more inclined to hit things that were hard for me before. I do miss the ST sometimes for long ride/xc days. But I try and find things that are more challenging now, LT shines there. That's why I bought the Stumpjumper, two bikes in one. Keep up the great work Mike's 👍

  • @michaelstewart9308

    Personally I prefer a short travel bike with modern geometry, which is why I own an aggressive hardtail. You can push the suspension (or lack there of) to it's absolute limit but the geometry still asks for more. This creates a very fun bike but it's probably not very safe because of that.

    To get the the knowledge out to the people on witch they can decide wether or not they buy new or an traditional geo. That would be very helpful. i mean...let´s talk about it....!

    After going from a 'lower longer slacker' at the time of release Reign in L to a Bird AM9 in XL and gaining 7 cm in wheelbase, i can honestly say longer is better. Okay, the seat tube angle is much steeper, which immensely helps the climbs, i have a longer dropper and i got a 29er, but the bike is both a frickin train rolling over everything compared to the Reign, but on the other hand i pop much more things than i did before. So i'm a much more lively rider now. And the change has occured with the bike.

    You know what I want to hear more about: Performance with the seat up. Hear me out here. I went to a modern geometry bike a year ago with a dropper post and at first I kinda thought the bike sucked. It way understeered and did some weird things in the corners. I soon found out I wasn't using the dropper enough. Drop the post, suck into the bike and it rides like a dream on the downhills. However, what about the in between times, not climbing but riding fast and flowy flatter stuff? The times I want the post up and I don't want to be constantly raising an lowering the seat. In the industries effort to make the ultimate all around bike and all the criteria bikes are judged by these days, why isn't anyone talking about ride feel with the post up? Cause as a long time high poster, I feel like long low and slack geometries make bikes ride crappy with the seat up, and you gotta have that thing up sometimes.

    Both right. It's a dumb thing to even argue about. This is good as a comparison video letting people know what each bike excells at because of its geometry but should not be debated on what bike fits most people best because what's "fun" is going to be different for everyone. Some people only care about going fast and plowing down a trail as quick as possible and other like bikes to poppy and playful even if it means taking your time a little to choose the best line. Both people though are having their own fun. Doesnt matter if one climbs better or descends better. Doesnt Matter if you think one is overkill or not enough. What matters is that person is having fun on their bike and your having fun on yours.

      @@MortalThe I went with the settings from the site. They only show the 2021, but the settings worked well. I am going to convert to tubeless soon so I can lower my tire pressure. That should make the ride a little more cushy.
      As for the geometry, I left it stock in the high position and center head tube. I might change that later to get a little more slacker.

    I went from the standard SJ (L) to the S2 Evo and now on the S3, I’m 5’10”. If you’re used to “standard geo” and you’re judging by the numbers or a quick parking lot ride on a new Geo bike it’s going to seem awkward. Debatable, but I think most agree that a steeper seat tube angle is better for climbing and once that is factored in you need a slightly longer reach to keep the same seat to handle bar distance. So now that you’re more forward on the bike with more pressure on your bars it only makes sense to slacken out the head angle to keep everything centered. Of course a longer wheelbase makes the bike a little less nimble but honestly I can barely tell after a few rides and I actually prefer the gain in stability up and down.
    I get the argument for those who equate agility and response of a steeper HA to fun on the trail but I’d say go watch a couple of bike fail videos and see how much fun it is endoing into rocks and trees. On the S3 it’s just an equal but different kind of fun blasting through rock gardens and sketchy terrain at high speed without the fear of going OTB. Just my experience and $.02.

    i was a total newby when i bought a used 2014? stumpjumper evo and certainly the first thing i noticed was how long it was, which made tight turns really dicey or impossible to the point that i would fall on low speed tight turns. but i would agree makes it comfortable and stable in straight line speed. i also have occasional pedal strikes and am sometimes concerned about strikes to the bottom bracket. i have never ridden the more normal geometry to compare it. once i got used to my bike, i do feel like you can easily make it pop off the ground if you desire particularly with clip pedals. goes without saying, but would recommend trying each of course before a purchase.

    I'm with levy. There's places for the Evo but everyone thinks they need it and buys one. Seen way to many people suffer on mellow trails with full enduro bro bikes. And they aren't as much fun YMMV. Having said that my choice is at least 2 bikes even if I sacrifice component spec. One enduro bike and a hardtail. Single bike stable it would be a trail bike with 130mm. Riding area is Vancouver island for reference.

    Dude I’m rocking the 2019 stumpy evo 27.5 170/150 coil fork / coil rear shock. And holy poop dude. This bike does it all. The climbing is a tad bit noticeable, but that’s where having the right gear ratio is pretty key. I’d say the bike is meant for people who are ripping. It made me faster as a rider forsure, the feeling of being planted on the ground and confident was awesome. I’ve ridden in Ashland, Moab, mammoth, Tahoe And shredding with josh bender on gnarly ohv dirt bike trails. And this bike has stoked me out so much I honestly might buy a second 27.5 frame because this thing is the love of my life

    Been an XC rider since the early 90s and just got into the trail bike thing. Man what a great place bikes are in these days LOL! I bought the 2022 SJ expert and man is that bike fantastic. If you are a skilled XC rider that thing rides like the fastest couch you have ever sat on ha ha! The reason for my post is I would like to tell others my experience with the SJ. I live in an area with 3 to 4 foot drops (also as big as I am willing to go) the Stumpy will do all of this just fine. The regular stumpy can play the XC game surprisingly well too. I was shocked how well this bike climbed to be honest. I hate pedal strikes about more than anything while riding and I am happy to say in the high setting after 2 months I have had ZERO pedal strikes. I think unless you ride a lot of downhill the EVO would not be needed. After all I am riding in the high setting and this thing is glued to the trail and I could still go slacker so food for thought I guess. I still want to throw a leg over the evo and try it ASAP though. Stumpjumpers are super sorted bikes straight out of the box. Great review Pinkbike.

      I rented a Sentinel and went riding down at Weaver Bend (Paint Creek DH and a couple other trails) last spring, and it was one of the most miserable times on a mountain bike ever. Way too heavy and a mushy pedaller like most of the fsr type bikes. Longer bikes, longer reach....lesser need to arch your back....lesser chances of getting tired when u decide to push (sprint) in races in high gears while standing. Many people ignore this point in cycling but alot of body balance is lost when you don't keep your backbone straight. I think the Evo Mike is right....if am not wrong, the lower BB can be sorted by having a 29 in the front 27.5 in the back, crank it a 165 and may be increase the travel abit and there you go.....party is on again. And who said you ain't having fun if you are going faster??? The definition of FUN....is unique to all riders. Cheers. Very interesting video to watch 🙂👍

    MO...I have two stumpjumpers HTs, and the longer one (by only about an inch or so) def feels much more stable overall...the shorter one however is easier to pop, sometimes I pop it by accident lol and the longer HT never wants to wheelie unless I want it to. Definitely understand the ideas here on Geo...I "feel" faster on the longer HT on descents, but on the shorter one feels more sketchy depending on terrain. Love both the same however, one feels like it takes more experience, but at a risk if going full throttle.

    Why would I trade high speed stability for low speed climbing agility? 10 years ago I was looking at bikes and the salesman pointed me at a trek with a 69 degree head angle. I wanted something slacker but the salesman told me that 69 degrees would handle better. I told him that slack head angles handle great if you just ride faster. Ten years later and the bike industry is finally reading my mind and starting to make the products I've always wanted. I can't wait to see what 2025 brings!
