    I love my 2019 stumpy expert 29er. As a taller rider 6"2 and around 105kgs I went for the XL and it fits me perfectly. I'm really glad I swapped my 27.5 order for a 29er. Just a more capable bike. And just as fun as my previous 27.5 enduro. Had the bike around 10 months now, ridden it through a winter and a summer and now coming back into another winter. It performs equally well in all conditions, although in really dry dusty conditions it can get a little nervous due to the stiffness.
    The only areas I don't like are the rear shock and the amount of water that sits in the frame around the swat box/bottom bracket area. I'm looking at getting a custom tune or replacing with a super deluxe to fix the issue of needing to run 280psi plus even with the max number of reducers to prevent eating through the travel too rapidly. Having such high pressure means the small bump compliance is not great.
    I also had a seat post failure in mine where it would randomly drop a little from top lockout. Specialized NZ rebuilt it with around a 3 week turn around.

      TheHamishnz my command post failed too. Even after a “warranty” claim, it still didn’t work. Cost a bomb to fix.

    I bought the same model December 2019. I’ve been riding this bike ever since and completely agree with Clint’s analysis. I rode in Florida on Alafaya and Balm Boyette with it during the first couple years. Now riding San Felasco, and Santos a lot. The geometry of the frame really grips the trail and down hills. I feel very confident on it. He’s right about riding cross-country, especially with other fast riders. I have trouble keeping up with them and lose them on climbs. Down hills I can usually smoke everybody else. I had some problems with the guide brakes sticking, so replaced them with Migura Sport and really like those better. One advantage is the master cylinder is folded back on the brake lever and doesn’t stick out like the Shimano‘s and Guide’s. I replaced the rear tire with a Maxxis Assegai 2.6 which really plants the bike even more, however probably slows me down on cross country. When I replace the Butcher on the front, I’m going to try to find a lighter tire with still some grab to try to compensate for the greater weight of the Assegai, possibly a Vittoria.

    I've had my 2019 SJ since Nov2018. My first ride was awful... The SJ came with the FlipChip set to Low which, along with the super wide bars and stubby stem made the bike climb like a pig. I was scared that I had made a huge mistake buying it. BUT, I flipped the chip to High and put on a -20deg 90mm stem and swapped on my 160mm Pike and viola, she climbs like an XC race bike and descends like a slacked out enduro rig. I can't believe the difference. I have since put on 33mmID LB rims laced up with Berd spokes on DT240 hubs... and put all of my 1x11 x01 drivetrain back on it w/e13's 9-46 cassette, 175mm Next SL cranks & bar. No pedal strike issues at all while climbing technical, chunky trails here in the Colorado Rockies. The bike weighs 26.5 lbs before I load the SWAT box full of sealant, pump, tube, derailleur hanger, tools, food, etc.
    With over 20 years of riding and racing all over the Western US, this is the best bike that I've ever ridden by far. This is a bike I'll keep in the stable for many, many years to come.

    I suggest regarding climbing... Give a purgatory 2.3 a try on the rear. You won't really notice any grip loss but will really notice the improved efficiency in climbing. It's a change I made on my 2019 comp alloy and like it. Another nice upgrade is carbon bars. The alloy spesh bars it comes with are quite heavy and adds compliance with carbon

    • @TheMills567
      @TheMills567 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed on both counts. I actually went with 2.3 Ground Control tires as my trails are pretty tame compared to some. (Middle Tennessee). Climbs fine. Still Not a scorching xc climbing bike of course. But the fun on the way down is an 11 out of 10 😎

    Absolutely love my '19 expert LT 29er. I dream about riding it and lust to look at it haha. Two changes I made were to swap to the new Shimano XT 4-piston brakes as I just don't like the feel, performance or durability of the Guides. Thought the R's were a bit under-spec'd on a $5,500 bike. Didn't care for the stock tires. They were slow and soft uphill as a result of floppy sidewalls although pretty good on the descent. Put some Maxxis WT 2.5 aggressor rear and Minion DHF front and totally transformed it. Overall best/favorite bike I've ever had.

    I’ve got about a hundred miles on the ‘19 Stumpjumper pro. Coming off the 2016 Stumpjumper expert I’m a bit surprised at the difference in feel from the 16 to the 19. The 2019 feels heavier but man the grip on berms, the confidence on flow and fast single tracks and jumps, it’s really just better! The only thing is the weight, I’ve considered shaving a pound by switching out the tires but I keep telling myself why? I’m not a pro, not racing, just out having fun staying fit. The 2.6 tires (I’m running tubeless) weigh almost 4 lbs together. anyone switched out the tires? comments on this are invited. I’d almost say you can turn this into a Xc bike by replacing tires with 2.2 and emptying the swat box. While in the saddle putting down power I’ve had no issues with squash and when outta the saddle it’s still respectable. Going down hill you’d crush anything like a epic or pivot 429sl. I was torn on what to buy, but now I’m happy with my choice. Dark blue with Kashima coating and I added the gold xx1. I’m not the most prolific biker out there but damn I look good doing it!

    • @BrockNorman
      @BrockNorman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are my thoughts on the 2.6 tires as well. I at first wanted to swap them, but I don't race anymore, and the traction is great. I may throw a 2.3 Purgatory on the back when my 2.6 is worn and see how it feels, but for now I'm content with the 2.6.

    • @LuisManuelHdez
      @LuisManuelHdez 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! Dont care for these tires. HEAVYYYY!!!There are definitely better choices for those of us who like a lighter feel that still grips.

    I love that bike, I have a 2016 with the swat, which was probably the main reason I went for the carbon, that and the unique color and no graphics. If I was going to buy a new bike today, at or near the top of my list would be the current stumpjumper. I agree the saddle is good, so good I put the same saddle on my other bikes, I ride without padded shorts. I have the same tires on mine as well, almost too much grip. 2 weeks ago I rode Alifia for the first time and it handled everything there. Cheers.

    Nice review Clint. I love mine so far! Upgraded the fork cartridge to the RCT3 cartridge, so now I have fully open, climb, and locked positions. Not sure if the people watching know that the stock fork only has a low speed compression damping, and that the fork is basically in a "fully open" position all the time in its stock form. It's a proprietary fork made by Rock Shox for Specialized, just like the Fox Rhythm fork as well. Overall, I'm psyched about riding it this season, as I had limited time on it this past Fall when I picked it up. Great bike, which I'd recommend to anyone!

    There's a newly released air can upgrade for your rear shock... Rockshox MegNeg air can, which adds more volume to the negative air chamber.... i hope you would try it and review the changes in characteristics of the bike after upgrading the air can.

    • @SurpriseMeJT
      @SurpriseMeJT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say that this "upgrade" is really just a fix for it's poor performance. It's a fix that you have to pay for in order for it to get closer to Fox quality design.

    At 5'9.5" I have ridden a Med, Large, and XL Stumjumper carbon 29. Loved the medium and XL. Cant jive with the large with any other shock than the Fox DPX2 Factory, which is too much money for me to justify riding.
    So, I just bought a 2020 Stumjumper Carbon EVO S3 (large/xl) and its the best bike I've ever ridden: based on fit and kinematics. So strange as I've always thought a 66-degree headtube angle is slack!!!
    Meanwhile, got to recommend this EVO, also the 2020 Reign 29 medium, and ofcourse the Ibis Ripmo size large as being the true standouts.
    Now in 2020, I see you're riding a new Transition Sentinal 29. Thinking thats a definite solid-choice after riding the EVO. Mindblown how agile a bike with a near 50" wheelbase is!
    Perhaps bikes are best near 63-65 hta and near 67-69 hta??? As if everything inbetween is somehow "vague" in contrast to the on-point experience of those two angles??? Maybe the EVO is just a special bike based on my size and background? Rides like a dream even with a 51 offset fork! Should seem weird for such a slack angle, or at least that's what Ive expected to experience over years of riding.
    Anyway, just catching up. Times are adding up and the experiences are starting to stack up into newfound outlooks.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a trail bike with this much travel and tires this big is going to feel slow as a commuter bike. If you were going to do that then I would put on smaller tires, like 2.35.

  • @robertbracewell2430
    @robertbracewell2430 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Question?? If I want to change the rear suspension to a spring on a ST stump jumper, what would you recommend? Would you do a "How to video"?

    • @jasonrhyner7529
      @jasonrhyner7529 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spring has its own recoil versus a shock that's what then you do not want at all on a bike unless it's a Spring over a shock... Depending on what you want the bike for going downhill or cross country... Despite the timeframe you could actually have both won for cross-country and for downhill always use a shock because you can really be late the rebound.... Example, if you use a Spring going down Hill and you hit a good bump or rock it could buck you off the bike easily versus a shock that has a slow recoil setting

    Thanks for your reviews. Watched them all, although I'm rather after the ST version, but since frames are the same, just suspension travel is different, I figuret I'll check them, and I don't regret it. Very infromative and competent. If you don't mind me asking - how exactly tall are you? You've said you're little over 5ft 8in? It that like around 175cm (I'm not very good with imperial system :) )? I'm 178cm tall, so between the sizes M and L, according to specialized size chart. Which one would you recommend?

    I have a 2016 SJ with the swat box and love it. The one thing that I will say is the swat box lid on these 2019's is disappointingly cheesy compared to mine. The opening on my 2016 is completely framed with pretty much a gasket seal. I wash my bike periodically with a pressure washer and never saw a drop of water in there. My buddy has this same 2019 expert and complains of water getting inside and when I looked at it there was no questions as to why.

    • @AustinDesigner
      @AustinDesigner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I own 2 of 2016 SJ, an expert and sworks. And I can attest to this that I never had any water ingested into the swat box either. Now I will stop thinking of buying the 2019 as I will be frustrated if other resonates with your observation.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually do like GX. There's not much difference in shift to performance between GX and XO. The only issue I have with SRAM is there seems to be one gear in the middle of the cassette does not hold very well. It's only with SRAM eagle. Other than that it shifts fine.

    Clint, with the current bike shortage, I'm lucky to be getting an opportunity to pick up the new Specialized Status 2020 bike. A friend and bike shop owner tells me that the geo is similar to a Stumpy. The thing is, I do want to race XC. In your honest opinion, do you think this kind of geo would be ok to race (northeast single track - lots of roots & rocks but no big drops) or would you suggest waiting and getting another XC / Trail bike?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my book pedaling efficiency and bike weight is more important than geo numbers for racing. Check out my video release of the new transition Spur. it has angles I never thought would be fast on a cross-country course, but it proved me wrong.

    Clint I’m 5’10.5 with a 31 inch Inseam so kind of mote torso than legs. I sit i between many mediums and large. I ride now a Santa Cruz large 29’er. I felt like a long time like I sit very high but it feels good once I get rolling. I did switch back from clipless to flat 5-10 shoes with good pegged pedals since I feel better in tech areas. So what do you think a large is right for me?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same inseam as you. So it's really going to come down to the reach. Try to ride both. If you feel like you're too squished on a medium as far as the reach then go at the large. If you like a bike that's more maneuverable then go with a medium.

    I recently purchased this model and am having trouble getting the suspension dialed in. The front fork seems so stiff. I am about 160lbs and have had the psi set to 25%sag but I still only use a little over half of the travel. I'm thinking the next step is removing the token. I'm assuming it only comes with one. What is your experience with it and any tricks on setting it up?
