    A lot of people commenting that it's not all wheel drive, or other silly things. If you pay close attention, the rear left is spinning when I inch up the hill. The AWD system works, but the combination of open diffs (I presume), all season tires, and cold wet ground make it a challenge. Again, you have to think about your consumers when you design an AWD system. Does the average Vovlo V60 driver need locking or limited slip front and rear diffs? Unlikely. The vehicle never got stuck, and was capable of going over the hill with more speed. For the target audience, this is probably all that's needed. If off road capability is the most important factor, you'd want different diffs and better tires.

      I drive a S40 T5 AWD (technically the predecessor platform) and I know such situations when on each axle 1 tire is slightly spinning. The solution: give it more gas. Why? There are two stages of traction control (at least in Volvos): torque-limiting and individual wheel braking (the good old TRACS). The first one is what will be deactivated when you "disable" DSTC (it is never fully off) which it always should be because the torque-limiting is very intrusive and counter-acts the AWD. The second stage is always active but only comes to play if the wheel speed difference is big enough. So hammer on and only let loose when all wheels are spinning. This might be very unintuitive when coming from a truly permanent AWD system like subaru symmetrical AWD or Quatro. But how else should they implement it without LSDs?
      On the road (what it is designed for) the system is very effective and never ever overwhelms the driver with sudden oversteer like it can happen with permanent AWD systems. Again what it's designed for ... safety.

      I resemble that remark! I am seeking to understand not make silly comments. I get it now. Unless I ask, I'll never know, right? Yes, it worked with more speed but that does not mean the awd worked any better. It only means you had more momentum. I thought it was a good discussion and I learned a lot about how different awd systems work.

      +glockmanish After having both the V50 T5 AWD and now the current XC70 T6 awd, I'd say that your 'give it more gas' statement is pretty accurate. I've never driven any other car that both lets me act like a fool sliding around in snow and mud then as soon as I ease back up off the throttles snaps back in line so predictably. (I've never had to give it that much throttle to get out of tight situations though.)

      +Engineering Explained I went on volvo's website and built a v60, it seems now you can get a 4 cylinder turbo T6 with awd and it gives you 302ish hp, but you can still get the 240 hp fwd. and i hope they make the V90.

    Nice review! When you commented on the many buttons in the center console, things are now changing radically as Volvo is updating their all models like the XC90, S90 and V90 that have already been updated. Then we get the new touch infotainment system in the center console and no more button hassle there.

    Could you explain the distribution of forces along an automobile wheel? I've seen warped wheels from impact damage. How much force does is take to warp an average wheel?

    I love your videos. Out f all the car videos out there I believe your the best. I would have loved to see what would have happened on that hill if you would of floured it but I do like the overall look of the Volvo regardless and could see myself buying one.

    The trac control should have braked the spinning rear wheel to transfer to other rear. Very poor system if it can even do that. Also why was the passenger seatbelt buckled?

    Does the V60 compare to something like Subaru's CrossTrek? Luxury's nice, but I'd rather have a more capable AWD system.

      Subaru's AWD system is better. I did a test similar to this with my outback with all seasons and it went right up the hill. Get an outback or a forester so you have more than 148 horses.

      +32ghzt54 They do sound lovely, but you get used to the sound after a while. I remember reeeally wanting a 5 cylinder when I had my V6, then when I got my 5 cylinder Focus ST (which has a Volvo engine), after a while I got used to the sound and preferred the V6 from my old car...
      I am currently car-less, so I'll take a 3 cylinder right now haha

    how does capability stack up to Subaru's range? how about size? scouring the webz for that "only 1 vehicle." street price wise the 4runner is probably the safe bet but way more capable than I need and too big for the city. the Subarus are nice but have no nutts...thoughts?

    Why didn't the rear wheels engage when front started to spin? Obviously it has nothing to do with all season rubber as the rear ones were not spinning!

    I think it's a very similar system to the one used on some VW cars. The Tiguan and the Golf R(it's more advanced on that car) mainly. A front wheels biased AWD can only do so much. The back clutch will give away if the pressure is too high and it was pretty obvious in the video. The system is still great, but don't expect 4x4 or AWD RWD biased performance. It was designed for efficiency and added traction when things get bad. I would definitely call it FWD+, but you know how manufacturers want to market their cars.

      well...it helps demist it faster, and it melts the ice on the windshield faster, but that s about it.

    curious about that hill attempt:: in other reviewers vid's of various similar cars in recent years, the trick is to wait just a bit longer and keep applying gas, and some cars will spin some o the tires for a bit and often get enough traction to mount such a hill.
    I've seen volvo, honda and others manage quite well, vs this display, so i'm curious---

    My 22 year old mx has heated front and rear windows? I thought that was a standard feature?

      +Unicorn Reviews your 22 year old mx has heated windshield , but it does it by the power of warm air. Volvo and some fords have heating elements through the glass, kind of like what you get in the back window of any car(those horizontal lines). So they defrost the windshield and the back window electrically.

    I'm not a turbo fan, from personal experience, but with more cylinders like this I5, the RPM's can be lower thus saving on engine wear. I hope Volvo will get negative response by going to all 4 cylinder engines, if they do. We need to keep our 5 and 6 cylinder cars around for larger cars, and as optional engines. Volvo's are built solid, have strong suspension control arms and nice front subframes, but as for reliability I'm not sure.

    Hey Jason, is there a significant handling difference between a cross country wagon and a regular wagon? I would assume there would be more body roll, but not as terrible as in a crossover. I hope you'll do a review on E class or BMW 3 one day :)

    The fake diff lock should work--the ABS one, but it did not, or you did not press the gas pedal enough.

    reliable? considering a lightly used 2016 w 19k miles on it but concerned about maint/running cost vs japanese brands (acura/lexus/subaru)

      I have the v60, Super nice to drive but they have a burning oil issue in 2015/2016 cause they mad they piston rigs in China. They seem to all burn a lot of oil.

    I recently purchased a new car and was seriously considering a Volvo cross country since the 08' Subaru Outback Diesel I had was troubled with a lot of motor problems (the worst car I have owned by far). I do have a 05' Subaru Forester as well and I tested my Subaru's up a muddy hill with worn summer tires the same day as I also loaned a 15' Volvo cross country and tried it up the same hill. You know what , the Volvo made it, but was having a hard time and really messed up the road since it was spinning a bit in the front, then moved power to the rear and repeated thee procedure all the time. I tried my 08' Outback up the same hill a bit later and no problems. Because of this I ended up purchasing a new '15 Subaru Outback Diesel. I am sure the Volvo will be a better quality car, less noise, more comfortable, but also about 40% more expensive (at least here in Norway). I can buy almost one and a half Subaru Outbacks for the price of one Volvo and the thing is far better on tough terrain than the Volvo which is the most important thing for me. If I was looking for pure comfort then yes, perhaps I would consider the Volvo. :)

      +Evan Moon well, they are not balanced. just like the inline 3 cylinder and v6 engines, as opposed to inline 4, inline 6, flat 4 and flat 6. Im not sure about V10s , but V8s and V12 are balanced.

    If i need AWD Car i will opted for cheaper Subaru VX or Forester, i dont need that much horsepower in a family wagon. 1 thing about the Volvo is i hate the dashboard. And i think Volvo's AWD is sucks... i dont see the rear wheel spinning at all, is it the FWD version?

    There is a dearth of information on the Ford Flex/Explorer/Taurus AWD system and Ford must not be too proud of it because all they say is "it's awesome" without saying how it works. Some internet sources say that Ford uses a copy of the Volvo system derived from the time they owned Volvo. I do know that the Ford uses a center diff off the transaxle and sends it to a rear diff which has some gizmo in it to clutch up or not. Do you have any information on the Ford system?

    Hi Jason,
    thanks for showing us, how those systems that allow rear axle drive after front axle slips sucks. I'm telling that to everybody since my first year in the university and nobody believes me. Pretty much everybody here in Czech Republic is excited about Škoda Octavias, which are (for what they are) very overpriced, plus all Škoda vehicles are using Haldex clutch packs for 4x4, which in my point of view is like having no 4x4 at all.

      Nah, the real problem are the open differentials, the same with most run-of-the-mill 4x4s and AWDs. You can barely see it, but the rear driver side wheel was spinning in tandem with the front passenger side wheel. Diff lock on just one axle would get him up and over without batting an eye.

    @ Engineering Explained.... as a Swedish automobile does Volvo have any weakness or trouble spots that you know of ? ... say like Saab had its weakness in its wiring of its cars using I believe a single fiber optic wire and when GM took over Volvo the head gaskets went pretty early on those cars but these was the late 90's models I think

    Can you do an STI off-road test at the same location would want to see the reaction of the STI in that hill

      +Emill Mendoza Unfortunately I don't think the STI has the ground clearance for the hill. If it were longer and had a more gradual lead in and exit, no problem with the grade. Getting to this spot requires a car with a lot of clearance though, the road to it has many, many deep potholes.

    Here's a stupid question. If 95% of the torque is at the front, doesn't that mean the rear diff clutch pack is always slipping unless you need AWD, which wouldn't be often? How does this affect the life of the rear diff?

      +Haloruler64 I'm fairly certain this is a wet multi-plate clutch (meaning little wear in the first place) and I'm sure they've designed it to compensate for slip.

    The front heated windshield shouldn't really be special, considering that my family had a 2001 ford mondeo and it had a heated front window, but it is somehow rare these days, even in cars that are sold in countries with cold climate

      This problem would be solved with a torque-vectoring rear diff. But, no they don't build it.

      unfortunately the new trend of putting a huge ipad in the middle and calling it a day is here to stay. once it fails you're done. that's why buttons are better even if it's confusing at first. people these days can't even take 2 minutes to learn something. once learned, volvo's setup is actually quite good. the great thing about button based setup is you can keep eyes on the road and feel your way to the right switch. it's ironic that with every new model safety features are piling up while the center console is becoming more and more touch based taking the eyes off the road.

    I don't get it, why is all engines so high powered in the US? Even the smaller engines have above 200 horsepower. the 2 liter engines here in europe (sweden) got maximum of 200 horsepower, above that and you'll have to get a V6 or a bigger engine (often both). And that won't get you far either. For example the audi a6, I got the 190 horsepower 2 liter engine, in the US you get like 250 horsepower with that engine. Even if I get a 3 liter V6 I only get around 220 horsepower. Why is there such a big difference? I'd like those extra horsepower as well

    the R-design thing is more like AMG package for mercedes
    its just abit more powerful..and with some skirts to make look like a real AMG...
    volvo are very reluctant to make power versions like what AMG and M-power and S-tune are making
    in my opinion polestar should :
    volvo c30 --->400hp
    volvo s40 --->450hp
    volvo s60 --->510hp
    volvo s80 --->550hp
    as polestar versions......not those crappy slightly more athletic versions
    we are not getting any younger ...make a reality volvo ...
