Avatar: My God! Britannia has fallen under the rule of the guardian! I'll have to use ever ounce of knowledge and power I've obtained over my past adventures to to vanquish this evil once and for all! I know! I use my new godlike powers to teleport home and wait five year for all this to blow over! Yep, Lord British would be proud of me!
@@moodydude6790 I am 100% sure that the prologue on earth is not cannon and is only a tutorial. I am sure that the game starts in the first cinematic which by the way is identical to the end of Ultima VIII
@@Ciro_vercety Except obligatory Bag of Leaking trope and none of the powers you gained from 8 *Like, Ultima 9 basically shoved under the rug that essentially the Avatar is now actually a god. Aaaaand you get none of that power.*
Ultima 9 should've opened with the Avatar storming the Guardian's lair and having an opening boss fight with him. Would've been similar to the opening of Super Mario RPG.
@lostn65 Are you familiar with earlier parts of the series? It is necessary for the ending to have the full effect. Basically, the Guardian (the laughing guy, who had his head built into the mountain there) banished you to another world, due to you messing up his plans in Ultima 7. While you were stuck there he spent his time conquering Britannia (the setting of most of the series), and this ending is you getting back to see what he did while you were gone.
This was one of my first RPGs and I immensely enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I never could complete it due to a nasty glitch on Daemon's Crag. I'd stolen something from Beren and after that everyone on that isle just kept attacking me. Even in dialogue phases... :D
I never finished Ultima VIII -_- I enjoyed 7 and 7 part 2. But my favorite is still Ultima VI. I love exploring every nook and cranny of all the dungeons :)
I've heard that's something they've done a lot, buy out a company with a good franchise, and sooner or later they end up doing something that runs it into the ground. More recent case we have is the development meltdown that gave us Tiberium Twilight, whose ending might b even stupider than what they did with the Guardian in the IX.
Garriot is happy with in 8 and 9. He dropped the ball big time. Reportedly he didn't do much beyond the start of 5. Better result would be to get Obsidian to make new versions of 8 and 9 as they actually understand RPGs and have competent writers. But not Larian unless you want Ultima: Divinity.
Hydros, Pyros, Lithos, and Stratos are not happy that the Avatar knicked their power to become the Titan of Ether. "I feel very powerful..." Shame he doesn't arrive in Britannia with the power he obtained on Pagan.
MageSutek Yep he was supposed to be titan of ether, champion of virtues and so and so but the retards in EA decided to send him back to earth with no powers. He was supposed to face guardian with his new powers.
@AndPlus it does not making any sense due to the fact that this game and 9 were compromised by EA who forced Origin to rush the game out and then proceeded to force them to change their original plans for 9. Originally your actions in Pagan were going to be used against you making you a outlaw similar to Ultima 5 but much darker, among other things. There's a copy of the originally planned storyline still floating around you should read it, shame EA fucked it up, that version would of been good
U8 is not even fitting to be in main series. It would be make sense to be another Underworld game and given the story premise of Pagan is darker and gritty. The intro where the Avatar had been portal'ed and then directly fell onto Pagan world beneath the sky, make sense a lot because Pagan felt like another strange & mysterious Underworld place to me. If Origin wanted to implement a lot of ambitious stuff, including the ridiculous platforming level, then Pagan should be design and translated into 3D engine element like Underworld so then it could be way more accessible & playable. Develop Pagan to be in isometric without a feature like free flowing camera adjustment & rotation (that already exist at the time like Syndicate Wars as an example) are painful & unplayable in some certain area like the platforming thing, etc, etc, eventhough the jumping mechanic was there. Not to mentioned, U8 also had a lot of creepy dungeon exploration level but could have been expand a lot more level & quest. Imagine if we do a dungeon quest and explore the cave & catacomb level in 3D, then it would be mind blowing and ultimate horror ultima experience after the first 2 Underworld.
@heirihunziker What's funny is I keep saying the same thing about bethesda nowadays,I don't quite get why people give skyrim a pass, when gameplay wise it's just as buggy as this game's first release.
what do you mean dismisses? it is canon, a lot of people go on about how the Guardian took over and even everything seen in the ending of ultima 8 is shown in ultima 9... although it looks fairly different.
At the end of Ultima 7 Part 2, the Avatar had thwarted the Guardian and restored Balance to the Serpents of Order and Chaos, upon which all reality depends. To do so put the Avatar in a vulnerable position in the Ethereal Void, where the Guardian snatched him and banished him to a previously conquered world, Pagan. The Avatar immediately set out to escape Pagan and return to Britannia. He was too late, however - by the time The Avatar had become a Titan of Ether to cross dimensions and journey to Britannia, the Guardian had taken over the world. This ending set the stage for Ultima 9...or it was supposed to, anyway.
No...I SLEPT TOO LONG!!!

It's like the scene in Forrest Gump when he does the running and then just stops and says "I'm pretty tired.....think I'll go home now."

This is still a better ending to the series than Ultima 9
Aye, the EA-suits have a lot to answer for...
Indeed, wisely spoken.
You actually finished part 9?
What a belter of a cliffhanger. Shame they completely ruined it.
Ultima 9 should've opened with the Avatar storming the Guardian's lair and having an opening boss fight with him. Would've been similar to the opening of Super Mario RPG.
Would have been awesome to see the Titan-Avatar against The Guardian (with the latter probably doing something to defeat and make you lose everything)

And then you wake up in your room as though none of it happened.
This is the best Bad ending ever.
Why?
it's canon.
This was a wicked game to beat without the expansion. Took 14 year old me a LONG time. Thanks for postin!
Intro to Ultima IX Ascension contradicts everything that we see in this outro.
For what I saw the whole game is a fucking contradiction.
No....no...I SLEPT TO LONG!

FANTASTIC MUSIC!!!
"Welcome home, Avatar. As you can see, there's been a few ... changes since you've been gone."
ultima 9 was suppose to be awesome
THERE IS NO ULTIMA 9!

ultima 9 dismisses this ending
This ending was like wtf? I did fight all this time just to see Britannia ending like that?
Well I mean... during the whole game he tells you "BRITANIA BURNS.." so... he wasn't lying.
I didn't know I hadn't finished this game untill today.
Goodness knows how many hours I spent on it to NOT compleat it.
I agree Garriot should re create both 8 and 9 (and possibly SI because of plot holes) because EA messed it up so bad
I do remember Serpent Isle getting quite excessive with its story and lore.
Unfortuantely EA owns all the copyright now, unlikely to ever happen.

Interface seems very clunky.
this game was such a letdown after ultima 7
Garriot should remake 8 and 9
Garriot sold Ultima to Eletronic Arts. =-/

I am still interested in playing what was originally planned for Ultima IX. Sure would be nice if someone made that shit.

Guardian~

For someone who didn't play the game, can someone give context to what's actually happening in the ending and what made it sad?
The Guardian conquered Britannia while the Avatar was away.
At the end of Ultima 7 Part 2, the Avatar had thwarted the Guardian and restored Balance to the Serpents of Order and Chaos, upon which all reality depends. Love the game, but the jumping mechanic...
Thanks, Obama.
imho i think best ultima was underworld 2
People bitching about Ultima 9, ok moving on.
@maroonsayko Hahaha No.
yes there is. it's just utterly terrible.
