Xabi Alonso chose the more AMBITIOUS path by rejecting Liverpool & Bayern…

  • Xabi Alonso has won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen for the first time in the club’s history. Leverkusen are still undefeated, with a record-breaking 43 matches without a single loss across all competitions, and still have a chance to win the Europa League and the DFB Pokal.
Xabi Alonso was linked with Liverpool and Bayern Munich, but announced that he will be staying with Leverkusen for at least another season. Some say that Alonso is unambitious by turning down these options, but in this video, I’d like to argue the opposite! In this opinion piece, I will argue why staying with Leverkusen could be seen as a gamble, but is a very, very ambitious decision.

Xabi will also get to try to play in the champions league with Leverkusen.
so he will get to test himself against the best of the best managers, in a situation where he would have less pressure and demand to win the CL(but at Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern we would be expected to win the CL right away)
I think most of the players will choose to stay, it seems that this Leverkusen squad do really love playing for Leverkusen and believe in Xabi Alonso`s vision and football belief`s.

That's 100% the reason he's staying. This project isn't done unless he at least tries to take them as far as possible. The players (although I don't care to look them up) had the character in them to listen and buckle down for whatever Xabi's program was that got them here. The players played the bigger role in this title run than is popular to admit. He definitely has a morale obligation to stay another season, because he'd be nothing as a manager without his men.

I am a Liverpool fan and i really think this was the right decision for him. I personally didn't wanted him to come to Liverpool or go Bayern Munich because it's just too early for him. It's good that he taking time and horning his skills.
What he is doing with Leverkusen is really something special. If he stays few more seasons and does really good he basically goes to Real Madrid. After thay he will have good amount of knowledge.
He can come to Liverpool and easily manage us for 10 years. Till he comes to Liverpool he will have even bigger experience and he can complete his story which he was not able to as a player.
He knows that he has only one chance to go bigger clubs and get to manage them. It's good he is taking time and just no jumping the boat. Just shows how good of a person he is and how much relationship matters to him.

Xabi Alonso enjoyed five successful years at Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014, pulling the strings from midfield with his remarkable passing range.
The former Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Spain midfielder had an eye for a pass and you can see that with this collection of his best assists at Real Madrid.
Alonso set up the likes of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuaín and Ángel Di María during his time at the club.
Well done to Xabi the entire Bayer team and especially Granit Xhaka. I'm not an Arsenal fan, but boy has he had a season he will never forget. He deserves this victory, the title win with Leverkusen.

Frimpong has a 40 million Euro buyout clause, which is dirt cheap in this day and age for a player of his quality. Of course he could still stay even if another team activates the buyout but that pretty much never happens. Wirz is the prize for the biggest clubs but I think as a 21 year old that has spent his whole career in Leverkusen he would see out another season there at least. Grimaldo has already played for bigger clubs but at pushing 28 years old might think he only has one last big transfer chance left so he could leave.

He might just say 'hey, it's great here. great team with room for development. and these guys gave me this amazing opportunity, I want to pay them back'. for me, Xabi shows maturity and integrity with this decision. we (the general football fans) so often complain about the money greed in football and when someone (like Xabi now) decides against it, we should respect and appreciate that, instead of criticizing it.

I think the reasoning from people is more that it's more risky, because you may not get such a good move again. But then again, it's not exactly easier to succeed at Liverpool or Bayern. Bayer will back him and probably even if he "fails" and finishes more as expected, they'll still not sack him. Whereas if you change club, and it'll go wrong, no guarantees. Especially somewhere like Bayern where the bar is so high, but even Liverpool. If you miss out on UCL, you'd get the sack fast. And after that, you'd want to go back to a club like Bayer. That's the thing - the others aren't THAT much "bigger" than Bayer. It makes sense to stay.

One important thing is Xabi in next year if doesn't win a thing but doesn't underperform will still have height rate as manager, because no one expect him to win twice in row, from all you said. While if he doesn't deliver in Bayern or Liverpool things might go wrong way.

    • @Ned-Ryerson

The current FCB bosses are past their prime, but still believe that buying out the competition is sufficient. There is a batch of dead wood that Bayern need to sort before they are truly great again. I would not completely write them off this year in the Champions League (they are Bayern, after all), but overall, while the team is still strong, it is a bit of a strange hash that is not playing to its full potential. Taking on a job like that would be very difficult, as you'd inherit this odd team while half the top hierarchy at the club will only be interested in their own opinion on on-field developments, and not yours. He is very wise to steer clear of that poisoned chalice.
Liverpool, while worn out and fizzling this season, might also be a bit too much of a pressure cooker, right after J.N.Klopp's departure. I believe that, if he ever had the chance to achieve something greater than the Copa del Rey with Athletic Club, he'd rather go there than RM, but yeah, probably a few good seasons at the Rhine (with low expectations) and then off to be Madridista again.

This could take the Bundasliga to another level IF he is able to push Bayern all next season. For me that's enough. I donno if they can repeat this season but if they can compete for the championship next season and make a respectable run in the Champions League next year this will boost the Bundesliga and the club will benefit significantly... What's more difficult; Having an huge influx of cash thrown into a team to always have the best players in the world or build a club from the ground up without that huge infusion of cash? I think the answer is obvious and i respect Alonso so much for staying and at least trying it over again next season... I believe he is just waiting for the Madrid job myself but I respect he is running it back next year with Bayer...

Leverkusens current success will never be sustainable due to the fact that in the end it's only leverkusen.
Even the fan base of leverkusen won't grow by being champion due to the limiting factor of having in 1.FC Köln one of the biggest and most popular clubs of the country sitting just right on the other side of the river.
In best case scenario Leverkusen will be able to compete for another season maybe even two till they fall apart but that's it.
Edit: That's actually the real point for Alonso staying another season in Leverkusen... he's just waiting for Real.

As a Liverpool fan I'm glad that he's staying at Leverkusen for a few more seasons, creating his own legacy and empire as well as history for Leverkusen would be a very wise decision and then when he's finished he can consider making a move to Liverpool or Real Madrid but for the fans that are saying he's unambitious are the ones that lose their heads when their team loses 1 game or play poorly and believes everyone deserves to leave. Starting small and going big is always better than starting big and going small

Must be Bayern fans calling him unambitious since most Liverpool fans were sad that we didn't get to go from Klopp to Xabi, yes, but we've also seen how brutal management has been for Gerrard and the scrutiny he faced. I'm actually thrilled to see some loyalty in modern football and of course it'd be a classy man like Xabi to show it.
Liverpool has had ups and downs before, we've got the most major honours in England now thanks to Klopp, we'll be fine without Xabi and maybe one day, who knows? Until then YNWA Xabi, get the Pokal and show the world you can do this again while in the Champions League 👏🏿👏🏿

Xabi Alonso knows exactly what he is doing at Leverkusen, fine let's say Liverpool or Bayern opportunity never comes again, can't he stay at Leverkusen and create more history there besides he is destined for Real Madrid.
Another point to make, is that for sure next season will be tough for Leverkusen especially if they don't add players because other teams will try and study how they play and try to counter, like how Klopp did against City, but I still think he will find a away and I think Leverkusen will continue play beautiful attacking game, which will be enough to land him a job in Spanish capital even if he finishes second or third. Bayern is also not guaranteed to get back to their feet, they will have a new coach who will be testing his style of play with new players on a new team, with a lot of pressure, so I think Xabi made a best decision of staying.

Im saying all of this as a Madrid Fan... and in Bundesliga my fav team is Hamburger SV...
I want Xabi to stay with Bayer because he has done wonders there and should lead that club to try to retain the title and take a shot at a UCL... The success story of Bayer is so much bigger then Leicester or Athetico in 2014... Bayer had NEVER won and on top of that they didnt win by being defensive or anti football or getting lucky... They won by trouncing teams and scoring bangers... The team played like it was fifa on semi pro and can go undefeated ... If they win the cup then its a bigger achievement then Arsenal back in the day ... And they prob will win the cup ...
The way that they went about their work shows that they are 100 percent not a fluke.. and there is nothing fluky about them going from relagation zone when Xabi took over last season to finishing in 6th.. and then this year not losing a game and us knowing they would be champs in February... Writz is not a fluke.. frimpong is not a fluke.. grimaldo is not a fluke.. xhaka is not a fluke.. shick is not a fluke .. boniface is not a fluke .. hoffman is not a fluke... These are good established players or cant miss young superstars ...
This team should stay together under Alonso for a few more years and see what kind of wonders that they achieve ...

After what happened to his bestie Gerrard, I think he knows better than to jump at a job which he might not be ready for. Grow, develop, lose some key players, build again, challenge for more titles, and then leave.
Madrid, Bayern are both bad options. You are expected to win the league, and reach the UCL Semis as a minimum each season. Liverpool is more relaxed in that department, but still a huge club nonetheless.
He is being patient, which is so rare these days. He genuinely might be the next big thing.

Leverkusen is the best option. He can stay there a few seasons and become a farmer, put some german trophies in his trophy cabinet. Play in the Champions League with less pressure to win. Then when that big Real Madrid job opens, i see him taking it. It’s a win-win for him.

Plus, he can try and grow Leverkusen, just like El Cholo did for Atletico, that'd be a huge challenge in and of itself, if that's what he's going for. The prestige would be far higher, should he succeed, than winning titles or competing for titles in bigger clubs.

I think the very last comment you made is actually very important. Both Xabi's and Carlo's contracts expire next year. I didn't think Xabi Alonso would want to take on the Bayern Munich position because of the pressure of moving from a young Bayern Leverkusen with moderate expectations to Bayern Munich, an aging giant who has to win now. Going to Liverpool would be even worse. Does Xabi Alonso really want to be the manager of Liverpool during such a time of transition? Xabi Alonso wants the Real Madrid job. As a matter of fact, Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz might come with Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.

As a Liverpool fan, FSG's lack of ambition and pursuit of profits has tarnished Klopp's legacy and at a critical juncture when Liverpool could've broken through being a top 10 European side to a top 3 side along with Madrid and City! Liverpool faced Madrid in CL final with the likes of Karius, Henderson, Milner, Can, Lallana ...
If they invested more early on, Liverpool could attract Halland, Mbappe or Belingham!
On the year six of Klopp's reign when he's finished and the whole midfield are so old they can't run, the sold 5 and bought 4 discount ones that weren't even their first choices!
This is not top club mentality! This is being richer and more famous than Southampton and doing the same scheme at a higher level and not competing with City or Madrid!
Alonso is smart to stay put and develop himself and his team and wait for Madrid or City job! Or go to Bayern or PSG as they have ambition unlike Liverpool under FSG!!
