  • A quick re-installation of the starter/solenoid assembly is first, then a fast start up of the old tractor is done just to make sure the repair was done correctly. A little 'walk about' on the 1973 Case's protection package follows. My cousin bought this new in '73 and purchased the lockable covers for the gas tank, radiator, oil dipstick/fill tube and the power steering dipstick/fill tube. The big one is the heavy cover for the instrument cluster, actually the whole dash. Back in the '70's, for some reason, it was a big thing for vandals to put sugar in a parked vehicle or machines fuel tank and/or break out the windows in a cab or smash the gauges in a dashboard. Concern for that type of vandalization is the reason the machine was purchased with the full protection package. Sitting on the shelf in the shed is a new old stock set of engine compartment side shields that cover the entire engine that were also purchased as part of the total protection package. Not ever having been installed on the tractor they remain in perfect condition.
Firing the old gal was the typical one or two revolutions of the starter motor to light her off with the tell tale diesel rattle. Always a faithful starter, winter or summer, frigid temperatures or ridiculously hot, it doesn't matter. Rounding out the video is a minute or two describing the reinforcements under the lifting hooks welded onto the bucket as the first order or business once she came to live out here in the country. There is one large slip hook welded just off center so nylon chokers can be used to lift without the chance of damage by sliding into a standard hook designed for chain links. Squishing thick chokers into a tight slot under heavy loads will cause excessive temperature to build almost instantly at that point which in turn damages the fibres of the choker, rendering it less than its rating. On jobsites, occasionally you grab a choker that has been slightly melted in the eyelet and if the OSHA safety man spots it, immediate disposal is required. On a bad day the contractor will receive a fine....its just like the infraction for a cracked ladder leg, or frayed extension cord. Well....kind of. The point being you should never subject the nylon choker to that potential damage. But then again, most of my chokers are damaged and tossed away on different jobsites over the years. So mine are mostly all damaged to a degree already so I don't need to add to it by improper use.
All in all it was a very good day. The solenoid repair was good, and afterwards, the battery was removed and taken back to the shop because I don't know how long it'll be before the next opportunity arises to fire the reliable old Case up for another activity.
