    Lets just say, our little narrowboat was bobbing up and down so much Jan was ill...
    But, did we make it in time to get through the lock at Limehouse???
    (Our heartfelt thanks to Chris and Steve from / lifeonboardamyjo for allowing us to use their footage)

    The building on the right is MI6.
    Back in the 1970s I was on a small speedboat powered by an outboard engine - first time ever. Went from Putney all the way down to Tower Bridge where the engine promptly conked out. We missed slack water and the wind veered before we fixed it and then started back. My the rollercoaster rides under the bridges. You just don't realise how choppy it can get. It was dusk by the time we made Putney and both the wind had settled and the chop had gone and we purred along. But I'll never forget those City bridges, and not for the right reasons!

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is M16 but we're supposed to keep it secret 😉
      Very choppy indeed, don't think the incoming wind helped either. I can imagine it's a bit scary in a small boat because it was pretty butt clenching in a 60ft 20ton narrowboat!!! 😨

    Hi Tony Jan ,that was a interesting trip on the Thames 😊most enjoyable some great buildings on the river bank ,as you know I worked on boats all my working life so when you said it was rough I had to laugh a little I’m used to 2/3/4 meters high but I was in my tugboat as skipper in the wash and you was in a flat bottom narrowboat so I guess it was a little rough for you ,sorry Jan felt a little sea sick ,I really enjoyed this blog thank you so much so interesting,John 👀🌹👏🙏🫶🇬🇧🤝

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John.👍
      Flat bottom boats don't like chop! Jan definitely didn't enjoy it.
      I'd certainly never experienced the prop leaving the water and feeling the resultant vibration under foot. Quite unnerving 😲
      I've been out in fishing boats out of Lowestoft when I worked in TV, filming a little fishing sequence, where it was so rough the horizon kept disappearing 🙃

    Back in the 70s we took a small cruiser down to Tower Bridge and back. Only minor problem was it taking less time than anticipated and led to a long wait for the tide to turn while tied to a fueling barge below the bridge. On the trip up the Lee and Stort we went via the Grand Union and Regents canals onto the Hertford Union at Mile End.
    The advantage of the cruiser was it going over the waves rather than through them.

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh yes, the disadvantages on a tidal river of having a flat bottom!!! More of a challenge in a narrowboat 👍

    Thanks, a nice video. There have been some issues about lock opening times at Limehouse this year, driven by water supply issues from the Lea. It would be helpful to know which date this trip was made on, and exactly when you were told the lock was open. (On some days Limehouse is only open HW-2 to HW+2, while it should be HW-4 to HW+4. The former is really difficult for a downriver transit. I would have advised setting off a bit later than low water on the way upstream.
    A couple of other thoughts:
    * MI5 is on the left bank, behind HURLINGHAM
    * you can see the slow flashing white light on Westminster Bridge, which normally means something big and hard to maneuver wants to use the arch.
    * Tower Bridge if you take the centre arch you should aim for the white line to right of center
    * Esp if short of time, it's perfectly feasible and much faster to make the direct entry to Limehouse, ferry gliding across the river, after talking to VTS on the radio
    I'm looking forward to entering Limehouse about 2100 on Saturday, after the Reflections flotilla in memory of Her majesty the Queen.

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Simon.
      Head over to Twitter if you want to know dates etc., we do mention times of lock operation in the video.
      As you know there are two tides a day, so when asked why they wouldn't open the lock on the later high tide we were told by the lockie that he wouldn't be there and that was a Saturday. Guessing he wasn't working a full day, so if you're planning on going in on a Saturday evening I'd make sure there's someone willing to work overtime!
      Their whole attitude was one of being totally unhelpful - not unlocking the gate at the top of the pontoon so we could escape the ravages of staying on the boat in the swell and enjoy a cuppa with friends??
      He also let another boat in before we got there who hadn't booked and we think he thought that was us!
      The whole operation was totally unprofessional and dangerous.
      Both CRT and PLA took a very dim view of them and their actions when we sent our report to them.
      As for your observations, hindsight is wonderful, but I'll challenge anyone to try and steer a narrowboat under those circumstances and keep it in a straight line, especially when most of the time the prop is out of the water because those bloody ribs criss cross in front of you to maximise the swell!!
      And as you know, M15 and M16 are secret...sssshhh 😉

    • @ScholarGypsyOx
      @ScholarGypsyOx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MakingNewMemories Thank you. As you've already reported this incident to CRT I don't need to follow up on the details -- I have been in discussion with CRT about the general issues at Limehouse (and the online booking system at Brentford) for months. I am though genuinely surprised by the point about not turning up later. With advance warning the lock should be available between 0500 and 2200. On 6/8 the second high tide was 2020 BST, so (with a booking) you should have been able to get in shortly after 1800 (ie outside normal working hours). If there hadn't been a shortage of water in the basin then you should have been able to get in around 1620 (in normal working hours where in theory booking is not needed, but still strongly advised).
      Lateral positioning is indeed tricky, and quite often requires strong steering action (ie pointing the boat in quite a counter-intuitive direction!).
      Also worth noting that Aquavista have put in another planning application to replace the current short term moorings on the wall with pontoons. A number of people have objected again (I think the deadline has now passed).

    Sorry about your unpleasant experience but it could have been worse if all the trip boats had been working. I owned a Dunkirk Little Ship from 1995 to 2010 and each year they do a Return to a port or Dunkirk every 5th year, so 96 we went to Limehouse, I kept my boat at Wraysbury at the end of a friend's garden, so not too far of a journey. We had a great time and dinners in the Club house and a Riverside pub.
    On another journey years later, I came upriver from the Medway on the way to Limehouse, on approach I got a huge sand back wrapped in a prop. OK the boat had twin engines but only one rudder so steering was OK one way but useless the other. Like you I had to do a 160 and stem then get in and wait for the bridge, once on the pontoon in the marina the bag fell off. It was beers all round in the club after that.
    In the two years I kept Lazy Days at Wraysbury and later at Albert Dock I've never had bad service, in fact the upper Thames lock keepers knew the boat and introduced themselves to me.
    Happy barging you two and stay safe. Thanks for post and reminding me of some great times.

    All in all tho, the footage you filmed was fantastic. I've never been close to waters that were affected by "the tide". All I know is that as a child was told "the moon affects the tides". Don't understand it at all. How/why/where/when, etc. I've been on boats for years, but never experienced rough waters like you folks. That looked scary. In fact, I was being a little sea sick. lol Take care you two. I enjoy your videos and the sights that you share with all of us. We thank you. Sandy from Ohio, USA.

    • @MakingNewMemories
      @MakingNewMemories  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Sandy. It's all to do with the gravitational force of the moon and rotation of the earth although I still don't fully understand it, all I know is the tides can be quite vicious sometimes so treat them with care 😲
