I live in S Devon. All this is brutal but true. We have NO 'affordable' homes. I do not agree with second homes at all. Till everyone has a first home, no second homes, thank you. It is a financial nightmare here.
I sort of agree that the world works better for some than others. But we should be a free country and be able to buy and sell whatever we want to and do and be whatever we want to. But all that requires £££. The best way to acquire £££ is to be born lucky into a good home environment, listen to your teachers and make the most of our schooldays, maybe further education but that's not for everybody. It wasn't for me. I did ok but not so well to buy a second home. I was lucky, as above, and brought up in a N London superb so the world was my lobster. Doing ok in retirement in a village in Central Europe where the cost of property and living is so much less but a bit boring as after six years I still miss the culture and vibrancy of the UK. I enjoy your channel as you keep me in touch with my homeland.
@@philiptownsend4026 interesting to hear about your experience of living abroad. I enjoyed this video. Very well made. I live and work in rural South Devon so it was nice to see some of the more familiar places on your video. Thanks!
Great video Mr Towns! We absolutely LOVE Woolacombe. We live is Stoke, a TurdTown in the true sense of the word, but leave our caravan in Woolacombe over the summer and spend at least 6 weeks of the year down there (before dragging the van back to Turd Central for the winter). We're not at all surprised by the average house price, as the stock is dominated by large properties with a sea view. There are a fair few family homes set back, but a 3-bed town house will still set you back £450k, which would buy you a 6-bed detached home in Stoke. We like to go out of season, and we hear a lot of the locals moaning about the tourists, having returned after letting their homes for the summer! Let's face it, they wouldn't be there without us... co-existence and respect is the key, and thankfully, Woolacombe pulls it off admirably. I'd live there if I could afford it 🙂
I live in Woolacombe and you've got it absolutely spot on. I must say 2 things, firstly most people that comes across as a local moved here at some point because they loved it, and there is a very small amount of people that are born and bred here. Second that it's only a very small amount of (narrowminded) people that don't like the tourists, and unfortunately they are the loudest. It's a fantastic place to come on holiday and its a fantastic place to live. And you're right, its outrageously expensive to buy a home here.
As a South Devon resident I’ve been to all these places with Salcombe being the least number of times! That’s how much it’s a victim of it’s own success. You only make the long drive to be disappointed for no parking and no one fancies trying again.
A very good video, and nice to see what you look like at last. I come from Devon, but live now in Wales because I could not afford to live back home (in Brixham, Devon) when I left the RAF. It really is a case of the haves and have nots.
I know why Bigbury and Thurlestone are on this list - The coast there is stunning. I live next to Lustleigh - Beautiful chocolate box town that's like stepping back in time, it's also no wonder that its on this list, but it's not as isolated as you'd think. The moor and many touristy areas are pretty much on its doorstep. Moretonhampstead and Bovey Tracy are both a stones throwaway in either direction, even if the road is a bit pants. If you're a cyclist, you've got the Wray Trail running right through the town, following the path of the old railway. There's even a big department store (Trago Mills) that takes about 20-30ish minutes to cycle to from Lustleigh which is really easy to get to, for those inclined and know how.
I'm in brixham and l love it but sadly out of 78 houses in my road 66 are holiday homes ... the village vibe that l loved when l came here many many years ago has long since gone ... oh and Dittisham is pronounced "Dit sum " great video 😊
A very welcome notification! Great video as always, and nice to see you on ground level chatting to some locals. Please do one for the East Midlands sometime. 🙂
Rothley in the Charnwood Forest would definitely qualify. There's one street (the Ridgeway) where the average house price is over £1 million. Probably Swithland too. Further north, there are some expensive villages near Nottingham such as West Bridgford.
When visiting Salcombe, you can park in that park & ride car park at the top of Bonfire Hill and just walk down the path to the town... then walk back up it to your car afterwards
Stoke on Trent, mainly the Hanley Area. Empty shopping centre, rows of empty shops, maybe 3 night spots left and good chance you'll get spiked if you go. Last time I went there was a guy passed out with a needle in his arm on the main road.
"why have a second home here, it should be your main home" - while filming my house :D I live in my one and only home in Woolacombe, with my family, year round and it is indeed a great place to live. Except that most of the shops and restaurants shut down between November and March, but I guess 1,000 people don't generate a lot of business, so it's understandable!
Great video. I live on the outskirts of plymouth and can support you on the fact that places like bigbury and Thurlestone are completely dead and souless - even in summer. As for salcombe - i can't stand the place. There is a level of smugness and superiority from those who ho there in the summer and its a ghost town in winter (which i prefer). Countryside around it though is absolutely stunning.

Salcombe had to be no. 1, but surprised Newton Ferrers or Dartmouth aren't on there. The pub in Lustleigh is very nice. Great video thanks
I have used that park and ride in Salcombe, it's hilarious, you can get to town (after a long wait) but if you want to come back during school chucking out times, they use the same buses. This means you have to wait until the school kids are all at home! This is why no one uses it. I always park at the far end of the harbour, always spaces.
Come to Stoke on Trent for the next turd towns, the city could be an episode all to itself with the 6 towns (although Longton is starting to improve) and there are other smaller towns/villages within Stoke that could feature too such as Abbey Hulton, Blurton, Chell, Northwood and Smallthorne. Could do a few around Newcastle-under-Lyme as well like Silverdale and Chesterton.
I spent many years living in Devon and so have visited everywhere in this video (except Westhill, which I had never heard of). I loved it. And if I ever came back to the UK I would only consider Devon or the Cotswolds. But, I won't be coming back!
Having lived in the place many year ago I too was surprised at the lack of Kingsbridge. An oddity is that it is very difficult to access as there are no road signs, as though you are not meant to go there!
I own a small 2 bed house in Woolacombe, love using it year round as a 2nd home. Only shame is that the town itself is very seasonal, so mostly everything is closed in the winter. But its otherwise beautiful, and great for walking the dogs on the beach

I grew up in Higher Batson, just outside Salcombe in the 70s and 80s. Back then it was just a normal little seaside town with an amazing community. Can't imagine what it's like now.
I had several good holidays in a hotel at Hope Cove so visited Salcombe often in the 80s. It was a nice town in a stunning location but was busy even 40ish years ago. The consolation is that busy places are wealthy places because people want to be there, even if only for an hour.
It strikes me that with Salcombe, and other seaside towns and villages, they aren't best accessed from the landward side at all. You don't need a car. You need a boat. In fact many of these places were originally fishing communities. Their economy and raison d'être was based on the sea. Owning a boat would certainly be fun, and might even be quite practical. Motor or sail along the coast to a bigger place like Plymouth, park the boat in the marina, and catch a train to London. If that sounds expensive, that's because it is. These aren't places for poor people.
The pasties sold in the shop at Lustleigh are delicious. Dittisham is actually pronounced Ditsum. Nice video. Agreed, Salcome is a nightmare for parking

Yea I know. But the point is I don’t want a nosey person banging on my car in the middle of the night. I need peace of mind that I won’t be disturbed because as you can tell fromthis vid I’m dead at the end of the day.
Great vid, a mate of mine had a 2 up 2 down ex fishermans cottage in Salcombe, he paid like 400k for it in the early 2000s, god nows what it's worth now. Stupid expensive and a pain to get around.
West Hill know it well, one of my mums friends had a huge and by that massive house down there. We used to stay in the Autumn and Winter down there, and it was lovely, probably reinforced by the place we stayed at, but it's nice there all over I have fond memories of that huge house.
We used to visit Bournemouth in Dorset, next door county, for days out/shopping. It was always busy but one time the traffic was horrendous and literally all parking possibilities were rammed full and people loosing their tempers with the insane situation. We gave up and went home for peace and parking.
Woolacombe is well known for its parkrun ( not quite a park) but run on the beach and often attracts 200+ people a week and it does look a very pretty place.
@@davidgeary9534 I used to live in Teignmouth and then due to an evil landlord kicking us out with two months notice I was forced into moving to Torquay. My house is much nicer now and we own it, however I prefer Teignmouth as a town so much more and I’m planning on moving back there when I move out from my parent’s house. But in the mean time I’m closer to the football team I’ve always supported 😅
Love your vids. Thank you. I’ve wondered what you look like. Voice to face , couldn’t fit!!! You look exactly like your voice sounds. No worries, that’s good, and I’m weird. Not a bad weird. Keep on, you’re brilliant. Love the insight to places I’ve been, and where I might want to go.😂
This happened to Cornwall when I was a kid, it's shit to realise that you'll probably never afford a house where you grew up. I had to move all the way up to the grim north, near Tiverton, but even round here prices are rocketing up even though there's not a lot of amenities or anything. If you get yourself out of the towns/villages, like up onto the moors or whatever, there are loads of places to park up over night.
You'll be happy to know that Devon, Cornwall and Somerset councils are now enforcing something called the Localisation Act 2011, which means you cannot rent or purchase a property there unless you meet the same conditions as wanting social housing -- must have connections, such as relatives locally, a job in the local area, and have a family history there. For my own nomination, I think its time you ventured into the Midlands, especially the East Midlands, around Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. Lots of it is run down, but we also have a number of posh areas. Theres a lot of ex-mining communities (check out the aptly named Coalville, complete with closed colliery in the town centre!) so theres a lot of places to explore.
yes and no. For example, in teignbridge and east devon you need to have a local connection to rent social housing, but you don't need that in Exeter. anyone can just go onto Devon Home Choice and bid on a property in the city without a local connection criteria coming into play. A few properties may have a covenant on them for a local connection in the city, but that is few and far between. I have known quite a few people move into the city because they 'think it's nice' and because 'they can get to the sea and countryside easily' from Exeter, but then complain bitterly about the cost of living, how poor the transport links are and how badly paid the majority of jobs are compared to the area they moved in from (usually the midlands and the south east).
Great video, thanks. Sad to see how places are all being done up so they can be rented out to holiday makers. But it seems to me (only really getting the horror of this in my 50s) that money truly is purpose on the planet. I'm all for kindness and alturism but if you don't earn you don't eat or have a place to sleep. It's all so horrible.
Loving your down to earth videos, sorry to hear about your issues trying to find a place to sleep in your car, crazy. We have just moved to Devon so if you ever need a place to stay when visiting next. Welcome here. We are a few miles outside Exeter. 👍
Love your videos ! Take the urine and perhaps in doing so, wake up the County Council . Cheers. If you do Dorset , try Portesham , it’s a mixture of old quaint and modern village properties. No I don’t live there.
Exeter resident, been to quite a few places on the list. Devon’s a lovely place but quite a few places show the inequality of the county. Exeters definitely the best place to live in the county as it has the best access to the most beautiful parts and is just 2 hours from London
Yeah, Crediton resident here. The amount of drug dealers who've moved in of late means I wouldn't be surprised to see us feature in a Devon Turdtowns revisit someday.
We moved to Kingsbridge 10 months ago. It’s a fabulous place to live because it’s a proper town with a vast array of shops and housing for everyone. We’re able to visit Thurlestone, Bigbury, Dartmouth, Hope Cove, Salcombe etc and enjoy them all on our doorstep, out of season without paying the price tag and there’s a great community too. Win, win. ☺️ It’s worth a visit if you’re down that way again.
West Hill has expanded. Shop was called Potters country market. People buy a plot with a mansion on and knock it down to put up a bungalow. I've lived between Budleigh and west hill since 1969. You'll find all the hotels are fully booked for the foreseeable future. Try booking at the Hilton Exeter airport.
Surprised to not see Dartmouth and Kingsbridge in the video, beautiful places. For the next video please do somewhere in North West England (Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester)
First part of the solution is to get rid of the regulatory, environmental planning controls and let houses be built where people want them. Too much nimbyism and worry over newts, ‘affordable housing’ and limiting drive space. The second part is far more difficult ; the very low mortgage rate coupled with the low rate of return on savings is forcing people into the only asset which is appreciating which is property. As the planning bureaucrat’s restrict the building of property in areas of high demand, it has become very expensive. Of course no investor in such assets wants a fall in the value of their property and therefore there is an enormous incentive to restrict building and support the environmental lobbyists in doing so.
I know you can not include every wealthy area in Devon, but I would also include Shaldon village too, starcross Kenton and Moretonhamsptead I enjoyed your content thank you
As a solo car camper, I can fully agree with how awful any overnight parking is in Devon, or just the South Coast in general. Im also probably the only lady who would defo car camp to do this 😂

I live on the Somerset/Devon border so Ive been to some of these places many times, especially Croyde. I enjoy your turdtastic vids! A good eye for the truth!
I live in Devon and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Some of the lanes can be "interesting" and very narrow and do seem to go on for miles, especially the one's with grass growing down the middle!
I tried those out yesterday and decided I was correct to move back to the city having previously move to semi rural Somerset. I remembered why I hated winding, muddy lanes,
@@torbaggermaxpipertrust me my son works in Dartmouth and it’s got some dodgy places, Kingswear over the estuary is much more exclusive some of the house are incredible.
What most do not realise is the economy that second homes bring, most builders and tradespeople will be out of work plus most buildings will fall into disrepair without them.

Yea I know. But the point is I don’t want a nosey person banging on my car in the middle of the night. I need peace of mind that I won’t be disturbed because as you can tell fromthis vid I’m dead at the end of the day.
@@Turdtowns FairPlay,I get that bud.👍
Love the videos👍🙂
Great video, keep em coming. It really is worth sleeping in your car. I love these videos. great work.
Great vid, a mate of mine had a 2 up 2 down ex fishermans cottage in Salcombe, he paid like 400k for it in the early 2000s, god nows what it's worth now. Stupid expensive and a pain to get around.
You are really good at this. And it's all true. Thank you.
Woolacombe is well known for its parkrun ( not quite a park) but run on the beach and often attracts 200+ people a week and it does look a very pretty place.
great video, nice addition with the interviews
The secret gem is Shaldon (ok it’s a village) opposite the town of Teignmouth linked by a bridge & ferry.
Shaldon is a Posho’s Playground
@@thedevonianfootiefan9871
that’s why I live in Teignmouth, I can only afford a kayak 🤣
Love the insight to places I’ve been, and where I might want to go.😂
@dianesullivan3034 He doesn't look _anything like_ his voice sounds!
This has been a long time coming! 😊
it's what she said
This happened to Cornwall when I was a kid, it's shit to realise that you'll probably never afford a house where you grew up.
‘Bird watching’ on the nudist beach? I must have time travelled back to the 1970s.
Nice vid dude. You don't look like your voice. And good insight into the camping van. Would be cool to see some more like that.
One of your best videos, ❤
Wow, thank you!
You're in Appledore!! Welcome my friend!! Yes it can be tricky. id advise get a stealth van.
Love your videos ! Take the urine and perhaps in doing so, wake up the County Council . Cheers. If you do Dorset , try Portesham , it’s a mixture of old quaint and modern village properties. No I don’t live there.
Great video! Shaldon should be on the list too, premium house prices for the London set.
Genuinely one of my fave TT vids so far, the number of 2nd homes there is bonkers 😮
06:44 “My main Gripe”😂 love your words man!
Exeter resident, been to quite a few places on the list. Devon’s a lovely place but quite a few places show the inequality of the county. Exeters definitely the best place to live in the county as it has the best access to the most beautiful parts and is just 2 hours from London
More like 4 hours to London mate
Exeters a proper dump
PAFC
@@kacpergalecki5201you can get to London by train in 2 hours
Yeah, Crediton resident here. The amount of drug dealers who've moved in of late means I wouldn't be surprised to see us feature in a Devon Turdtowns revisit someday.

We moved to Kingsbridge 10 months ago. It’s a fabulous place to live because it’s a proper town with a vast array of shops and housing for everyone. We’re able to visit Thurlestone, Bigbury, Dartmouth, Hope Cove, Salcombe etc and enjoy them all on our doorstep, out of season without paying the price tag and there’s a great community too. Win, win. ☺️
It’s worth a visit if you’re down that way again.
Watching from Appledore glad you found the over night parking
Holy shit! Turdie is built like a strongman
hes a wrestler at heart.
Surprised to not see Dartmouth and Kingsbridge in the video, beautiful places.
For the next video please do somewhere in North West England (Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester)
Ahh the good memories of Woolacombe 241 drinks at europa Park
I know you can not include every wealthy area in Devon, but I would also include Shaldon village too, starcross Kenton and Moretonhamsptead
I enjoyed your content thank you
As a solo car camper, I can fully agree with how awful any overnight parking is in Devon, or just the South Coast in general. Im also probably the only lady who would defo car camp to do this 😂
I wouldn’t like to do this as a solo female. Lots of weird people out there so stay safe my friend!
At least it makes the streets look attractive - pans across to Oxfam shop...
I would love to see my home county of Hampshire get a video. There’s many hidden gems and incredible old buildings, but great places to cover would be Andover and Gosport.
Great video, but very coastal centric. I'm surprised not to see Chagford on here. Thats the main haunt of the 'rich and famous'
I was expecting you to have plenty of offers to share that cosy sleeping arrangement with you lol great video looking forward to your next one .
Hahaha it’s honestly an exhausting experience. I wouldn’t want to inflict that on anyone else 😂
Love the video.
Did you tell the two posh ladies at the start that you were filming for a channel call Turdtowns?
Always enjoy your vids buddy, keep up the great work :)
Budleigh's got an amazing wine shop - highly recommended!
I live on the Somerset/Devon border so Ive been to some of these places many times, especially Croyde. I enjoy your turdtastic vids! A good eye for the truth!
Salcombe is definitely the top posh turdtown of Devon!
I think Yealmpton and Nosmayo and Newton Ferris are more exclusive a place to live, if you visit Devon Dartmouth is also very nice.
I remembered why I hated winding, muddy lanes,
No Kingsbridge? I was surprised.
Me too. He went to a lot of small hamlets which I have only visited a few times in my 25 years of living in Devon.
Or Dartmouth.
@@torbaggermaxpipertrust me my son works in Dartmouth and it’s got some dodgy places, Kingswear over the estuary is much more exclusive some of the house are incredible.
Or Modbury
They justdidnt make the cut based on price. Kingsbridge is about £360,000.
What most do not realise is the economy that second homes bring, most builders and tradespeople will be out of work plus most buildings will fall into disrepair without them.
Yup it’s not all negatives.
They should still be taxed like every European country does or it gets exploited. Bringing work to builders isnt a good enough excuse
Bruv when you said: " I love my CX5" I LITERALLY SPAT MY DRINK OUT OF LAUGHING SO HARD!!!! Good for you tho
I never thought I would like it 😂 I know it’s a bit of a school run car!
@@Turdtowns can i ask what drone you use , your drone footage is so good ? one small suggestion do not use gmail, its unsafe and you get monitored , any plans to visit London ?
Used to go on family holidays to Salcombe, gorgeous town
Dittisham is only known 'round here as Ditsum, if you want to seem more local don't use more than two syllables.
Visited Salcombe parked on a side street at top of the hill you drove up , about ten minute walk into town .Didn't like dodging the big off roaders lumbering up the to narrow streets .
salcombe , went once visited probably the most expensive house ive ever been in ,views over the estuary , wow what a place
lovely video! love your dry humour. as a janner im glad not to feel the effects of second homes, but when i go out to the country its all i hear about sadly. i never understood the appeal of buying a massive mansion next to a lovely beach if you're in the middle of nowhere without any shops. a car centric paradise i suppose
Used to work at Europa and the word famous Marisco Disco in Woolacombe. It's not the village it used to be sadly, but good memories from growing up there.
The right to live where I grew up!!! No thank you. I was born in Luton 1954.
I escaped quite a while back, thank God.
Pleased to have lived in Kingsbridge from ‘83- ‘13.
Great place to have brought my family up.
When I was 6, we often went to Dittisham for crab fishing.
