Retro Painting: DEATHWING Terminators for the ORIGINAL Space Hulk Expansion

- During a dangerous expedition into the depths of the attic, I found my copy of "DEATHWING", the 1990 Expansion to Games Workshop's original Space Hulk board game. The box's contents are sparse, but the lore, art and mission design more than makeup for this.
READY THE BOARDING TORPEDO - It's time to dig out the lead and paint up some Terminators...
Music by Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio
That lip syncing is spot on. He never fails to amuse me old flappy lips. The death wing look great! well done! DEATHWING COMPANY!
Hahah! Oh the memories. I owned this game but never got it running on my Amiga 1200.
The intro was the best bit. The rest was just too hard! Well it was without the manual as a youngster.
Your free hand Dark Angels symbol shoulder pad is both excellent and a great tutorial on how to paint something fiddly! I'd never considered painting the larger part and then covering over the bits where you want spaces with the base colour. Looks great!
Aw thanks! It looks like a right mess initially but came together okay!
Space Hulk ils my 2024 project, and just bought a 1993 deathwing squad, so thanks for the inspiration !
My pleasure! Thanks so much for stopping by
Please do another battle report soon! You are hands down the best battle report narrator out there, and it's not even close!
I think my first comment on your channel, was how your voice reminded me of the Space Hulk briefings; I can't think of anyone better suited to play the board game! 😃
Looks great. Space hulk 1st edition is one of my all time favourite games.
I really like this style it look like a animation cell from a lost media 40k 80s anime
Love the channel, always such beautiful work and effort put in to every one. The models you paint always look so good, and the back tracks really help as well, thank you for making such quality content.
Such adorable video, these retro minis bring me so much joy!!!! thanks for sharing
More excited for the battle report than Christmas lol
"asswemble your brethren" certainly takes on a new meaning...
Come in looking forward to a neat painting video, end up buying a black mage mug. Absolute win! Impulse purchases aside, that freehand work came out so crisp! Looking forward to seeing these guys in action.
Love Space Hulk one of the best wee games out there and underrated.
how come space hulk is underrated when you just see people praising it? its underplayed yes but for a reason, copies are expensive.
Awesome vid, this vi has inspired me to buy some Terminators and give them a Deathwing paint scheme. Looking forward to the Space Hulk battle report.
they are amazing. can't wait for the battle report :)
All of my terminators in my custom Space Marine chapter are the old-school metal models from 1990-1992, just like yours. I poured my heart and soul into painting them, and wouldn't dream of getting rid of them. However, when they're stood up against the newer models, they look so incredibly small! It's pathetic, and saddens me. 😭
I feel that this era of terminator is better than the one in the mid-nineties, although the Wolfguard and Deathwing ones were seriously cool, I much prefer the old storm bolter and flamer design. Kudos for the custom chapter - The Emperor Protects.
Great to see a new vid and the Deathwing Terminators look fantastic! Very excited for the next one.
Lovely work, in the proper Deathwing colours! Can't wait to see them in action 😎
Wicked freehand work
love those old minis. Just found my old metal librarian. Loved that game so much, too
Love how retro contrast paints make minis look
I can NOT tell you how many of my personal anecdotes start with an acetone bath.
Lovely little video, and a bonus TH-cam point for using -the Arbitor Ian- ahem, sorry, White Bat Audio music :D
Perfect intro. Love it!
Can't wait for the battle report!
Wonderful to see you back with a new video.
The termies look great. very simple colours but so striking when finished.
Looking forward to seeing them in action.
Damn! You made those free hand insignia look easy…
Awesome work as always, love the channel!
Yeah those are bullshit good, nice work
Great paint jobs, love the intro the sacred artifact
Please make more stuff like this. This channel is the soul reason I still participate in the hobbie
I was shocked when your stuff first dropped on my feed at how few subscribers you had! Between the incredible production quality and the amazing painting skills I'm always excited for when a new video of yours dropped. You've got me scowering ebay for old models now...
Now I want to paint my old Space wolf Terminators. Love the scheme.
Always a joy to watch one your videos.
Great work, good to see you back. How are the nids coming along?
A sizeable swarm! Not sure if you saw the 2nd Edition Report on TabletopTactics, but a Lictor, ten more Termagants and another six Warriors have left the gestation pool!
Impressive work (especially the freehand)!
Awesome work!
4:35 A wild Arbiter Ian appears!
Black Rainbows is a banger!
Great to see some new content. As a 2nd edition 40k/1st edition space hulk fanboy your channel is gold. Really looking forward to the SH battle reps.
He's back! Really like your freehanding on this one. And great music choices!🎉
Keep up the good work and glad early Games Workshop is getting some love. I got my start with 2nd edition in the early 90s, and had the original print of Space Hulk. I miss the old models, vibrant paint schemes, and tongue in cheek craziness of early 40k. I was never good at painting, but loved kitbashing which led me to the worlds of Necromunda and Mordheim.
These are such awesome minis, I think its a shame that the video itself is so short because I just want more time to look at you painting them all.
Thanks so much - sorry the vid was a little short - I wanted to keep it tight! Should be ample time to look them over in the upcoming Battle Report - they tend to run a little longer😊
Love your content! Thank you for taking the time to make these videos for us all to enjoy!
A pleasure - it's comments like this that make it all worthwhile. :)
They look fantastic
Love the intro as always! Glad that you are back!
Great stuff! 👍 I love the freehand Deathwing symbols and lots of lovely old school vibes as usual! Many thanks for the high quality content! 🤟
Fantastic freehand! Great video
They came out great. Love the old school aesthetic
Yay! you are back. This made my day and my lunch break bearable :D
also, dont be so hard on yourself with the eye glow - experimentation is an excellent part of the hobby. If you want to try ti again use a really watered down green and build up layers, so it's not the same colour as the eye and looks more opaque like a glow. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Thomas! That's very kind of you to say so. Yes - I have seen this technique a few times in a few places and I must remember to try it. Thanks again for your comment and the support. :)
So cool mate. I love the freehand work on the shoulder pad. And I like how you did the assault cannon too. I may try to recreate that at some point, rather than leadbelcher spam. Oh, and have a great Christmas buddy.
Awesome video! You inspired me a while back to repaint my old RTB01 and 2nd Ed Starter set marines. I look forward to see your Space Hulk battle report.
That is so epic! Man I wish I had some RTB01s... I am filming the intro this weekend.
Imo these are the best termies ever made. No so retro, but no so modern.
Mega cool minis😊
Thanks for inspiration
It’s good to see another video from you..! :)
(Also, your freehand is disgustingly good ;)
PLEASE one day make a video series on the OG space hulk game.
Nice free handing on the shoulders!
Cracking videos man!
I'm a bit of a newbie to the hobby only really sinking my teeth into 40k with this new 10th version and was struggling to find that 'oompf' to paint the marines until I found your channel. The passion and love conveyed through your vids and the super interesting designs of the editions of old inspired a me to tool up, and give it a crack :)
I love what you do and am eager to see what you do next
the talking mouth of that Space marine is very funny !
great video can't wait for the battle report.
You're videos are as comforting as chicken soup. Love the tone and vibe. An alternative I suggest for the white armor is just going over it with apothecary white thinned down to reduce the grey filter on flat surfaces if you want to avoid having to do your mix. Lovely minis as always!
Thanks so much! Tbh, the basilicanum/medium mix was because I don't own Apothecary white. If I do a big force of Knights of Eternity I'll try out Apothecary white so I can get consistency across the force.
@@edpaintsminis That totally makes sense. I haven't been using contrast paints much lately but apothecary white over a white primer is so nice quickly painting white (followed up with some off white highlights and pure white for the extra mile) its made painting ostland empire troops far less of a headache.
That sounds sweet, lets get some more videos outta yeh!
Ace paint job mate. Hopefully see these bad boys on TT some time as well!
Glorious
It never occurred to me, when free-handing the Dark Angels chapter symbol, to paint the wings as solid blocks, then break up the individual feathers by painting on the background color. Will definitely need to try that on my Fallen next chance I get. (I've largely gotten away with using the Dark Vengeance sculpts, with the raised chapter symbol on the pauldrons. Always hated when a model didn't have it.)
Loved this video Ed and Death Wing were my first love in 40K. You did a great job on these and the captain is also a personal favorite. Luckily I will get to paint a squad of these for commission next year in Blood Angel colours. Merry Christmas to you and fam and all the best for 2024 mate. You are by far my favorite professional video creator on the Tube and I will get in touch soon about getting together next year mate. Take care.
Lovely paint job. I checked the rest of your videos and instantly subscribed! I have two lots of these terminator minis from the boxed set to paint up for 1st edition Space Hulk. No idea what chapter to paint them though. I always liked Blood Angels back in the day, but this Deathwing scheme looks fab.
FOR THE EMPERAAAH BRODAAAS!!
This is the way!
This is the way.
Really cool.
I just got into 40k and just bought 10 of my 2nd hand Terminators and painted them Crimson Fists, maybe one day I should try Space Hulk
I like seeing how to paint metallic parts without using metallic paints. It seems like in most of the old GW photos they didn't use metallics all that much, mostly just on some guns.
Awesome
Not going to lie, while the original terminators live in my heart as great models I was rather hoping you'd take that Deathwing paint scheme and use it on the new terminators!
Goddamn that looks brilliant!
Bloody Hell, is that just one coat of Black Legion on the assault cannon?! This was a great video, love your content and I hope to see more soon 🤞 also, happy new year!
Superb
That into 🥵🌶
Oh my man that's one of my fav terminators as well :D, the other is the 2nd iteration that looked like a mini dreadnought, and finally that 3rd edition one that came out in 1999 i think it was? Holding up a storm bolter like the new ones do. Also just to let you know, that is not that terminator's original assault cannon :) If you look in older white dwarfs, that era of terminator assault cannon lookd a tiny bit different AND came with a small shield.
My original full metal terminators including that Terminator Captain only come up to the armpits of the new terminators, but I'd never sell them.
Love them
Why is that black magic mug so familiar?.....
Great video. Very effective colour recipe for the Deathwing. Enjoyable to watch. Also liked the back track music too. Would you care to share the song title at time index 3:36 ??
Amazing work as always! How come you decided to go with Snakebite Leather for the bases? I love your blue bases!!
I was loosely going for the box art which was brownish. Deathwing was starting to link out to missions on dungeons and tunnels rather than exclusively space ships so it seemed appropriate. Might rebase them in the future depending on whether I decide to do a force of Dark Angels.
@@edpaintsminis ah makes sense, thanks for the explanation! I just wasn’t too sure whether their captain would be too pleased with them traipsing mud through the void ship corridors!
Watching your battle report on this made me want to pick up a set, until I saw that the deathwing box was 400$ on eBay haha
Hi, had someone taken a wire brush to those terminators? In would have expected more smooth surfaces and personally I would have avoided pure white as it shows all the scratches.
Sorry I don't understand which white do you recommend to use at the very first step, for edges... coat of arms white ? What is this color ? I can't find it anywhere. Your incredible video have decided me to paint at last metal termis i bought back in the days with my original Space Hulk ❤
how do you make the pva glue and ipa solution?
Great work on the paint. Always a treat to see these old classic models get some love and attention. I am curious why you elected to go with sand and grit basing if the intention for these models was to use them for Space Hulk?
Thanks Pez! Good question... 1st Edition Space Hulk and it's expansions/campaigns had scenarios that were not just on Hulks, but basically all sorts of 'dungeons' - Hive cities, underground lairs, facilities etc, so I thought it would be fun to mix it up. The box art also shows them with a gritty browny hue. Also, I wanted the option of expanding the Dark Angels into a 2nd edition force!
I'd highly recommend using Dettol instead of Acetone. Does a better job stripping metal minis and no where near as toxic.
For stripping metals, also consider a cheap ultrasonic cleaner with some 99% isopropyl alcohol. Gets every nook n' cranny.
Good shout. As someone who is basically regularly stripping all sorts of nonsense off metal models on a weekly basis, it's time I got one.
I'm surrpised you didn't try a more "space hulk" vibe on the bases. Not that the result isn"t very entertaining, of course
Well, very nice retro paintjob. However, I would preffer necromunda or sector mechanicus bases. After all, it is Spacehulk, a derelict spaceship...
What does the pva/isopropyl do?
It removes surface tension on the PVA/water mix, so it can absorb easily into the basing material and create a effective seal. It's great!
@@edpaintsminis is this about increasing the durability of the basing medium?
It is! Sealing the basing mix so that you have something that will last!
I heard citadel spray was not actually a primer fit for metal. Can anyone with old school (25+ years) experience with metal primers confirm that this will not chip and flake off of metal? I had bad experiences with Vallejo spray primers and do not wish to repeat. Armory primer was excellent on metal even surviving a dropped motel onto a finished concrete floor with no chips. Unfortunately, it's now discontinued.
When Black Rainbows started playing I was like ‘wait this isn’t Arbitor Ian!’
Awesome video! Any cheeky early space hulk videos coming soon?
Absolutely...hopefully first half of Jan!
Has anyone ever told you that you sound like Josh Strife Hayes?
I have a couple of these models. Do not have a original flamer or the grenade launcher.
No ''Wing of Death'' song?
Man I had completely forgotten about that one!
your missing the most important part!!!!! A coat of gloss varnish, that will make them look truye og painted.
Add a comment...
by the way i opened a subreddit for 2nd edition called R/40k_2nd.
Those look great just judging from the cover photo
