Hi everyone! This post comes with an exciting announcement for you all. Here in Minisodes HQ I have been quietly plotting to dedicate more time and energy into the channel, giving you more Minisodes and finding more ways to share with you my love of the golden age of Warhammer. As of today, for the cost of a White Dwarf magazine circa 1997, you can access my new Patreon. I already have a podcast up for your listening pleasure, in which I (amongst other things) give you the inside scoop on the channel, future plans and a commentary on one of my favourite bits of 40k short fiction. This Patreon is very much inspired by this wonderful community and I can't wait to start engaging with patrons and hearing all about what you'd love to see from the channel (as well as having a good chinwag about all things 2nd Edition). Hope to see you over there. www.patreon.com/Minisodes
Nice! Love the old transfers. I have not seen those before! I thought I was the only nutjob painting these old model 😆. Nice to see I'm not the only one. We need an oldhammer convention!
@sychan168 There's the ones that have medieval elements with unusual weapons. I have a couple of them. I'd prefer Priestley's original concept over what it became
Hey - with the old yellowed transfers, if you tape them onto the inside of a window for a few days in the sun, the yellowing gets bleached out and they go white again. If the backing paper doesn't soak up water well (due to age), rub some sand paper on the back and roughen it and then it will soak up properly. Great video!
Yes! I've heard of the UV treatment before but didn't know about the sandpaper trick. I'll keep this in mind as I have quite a few ancient transfer sheets. Cheers!
That paint set was what made me into an Ultramarine fan forever 💎 Coat d'arms is in fact the same company(at least this is what I have read everywhere) that was making those paints back then. It is the closest you will get to that set.
I must have been around 10 years old when first I saw a whole Games Workshop display cabinet full of Rogue Trader Ultramarines. They looked great, too!
When I saw you put the sergeant rank on the leg @11:09 I almost screamed. Remember trying to paint the ranks on the shoulder pads? I used to do the outline using a thin lead mechanical pencil before painting it.
Salutations! Just absolutely lovely! I had 2 boxes of the old RTB01 Marines. Most of them still serving; 15 with the BA, 10 with the UM, 5 with the DA and (sadly) 6 with the treathcerous Mantis Warriors. I like how you walked us through your painting process. I still have the Painting Guide. (I´ve been playing since RT days). Looking fwd to the Batrep. All the best! Billi
Gert lush. Love those old beaky bois. I have a few Coat d'arms paints, and I find them to be a useful tool in the toolbox. As with all brands, some colours cover better than others, but as I'm of a similar vintage to yourself, multiple coats is completely normal to me. And yes, I do also use them straight from the pot.
This is probably one of the best beakies I've seen. This launcher is great. This is just so much better than the later and even current models. Also nice paint job. Just apply two thick coats straight from the pot. Duncan approves.
Spot on again well done Ed! you get the content just right. I got a bit worried when I saw how the blue was going on, but turned out the best I think 🤟👍
I love your painting style brother. The models are all absolutley popping. The Ultramarine transfers are a thing of glory! Going to try and apply some of these techniques to my Dark Angels successors. Great stuff can't wait for the bat-rep! Keep it up brother!
Thanks so much brother! It was a joy to do as ever and great to try something different. Hope to see your Dark Angels some time soon. Happy Hobbying and loving the show !
@@edpaintsminis Thanks so much it really means a lot my friend. Really excited for our new episode massive lessons learned from our latest game and all the hobby it took to bring it to life. Keep crushing the amazing content!
Clicked like before even starting, can't wait to finish watching this ep!!! Edit: Holy smokes, this was incredible. What a gorgeous tribute to the models and paints of yesteryear. I wasn't even born when these models came out, but I've had a soft spot for them ever since I first saw them, and the way you painted them here is just awesome. So cool!
Haha amazing! Thanks for popping back. I never saw RTB01 on the shelf (probably just missed it) - they were replaced with the Warriors of the Imperium plastic kit. Another awesome piece of nostalgia right there.
The Space Marine Painting Guide was a formative piece for me too, I still refer to it on occasion! My memory of my pot of Salamander Black is that, well, it was just black. It was maybe supposed to be a slightly green black while Chaos Black was a slightly blue black but I don't recall ever being able to tell the difference myself!
Looking at those early SM one can easily see how someone thought edge highlighting everything is a good idea... now 40 years later...🤔😅 Great video, Ed. Looking forward to the new battle report :)
I've always wanted to collect a classic 40k army! I love the classic style and you definitely bring it justice! please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you forgot the space wolves; they were featured on the cover and in the book too. awesome job on the painting though, love your work and I've got nothing but respect for you.
I did forget the space wolves! The guide has a terminator as the example in the lovely gradient of greys as was the style. Four is quite a lot for a video! I might have a go in the future though. Thanks for your kind words ☺️
I too have the old Brother Hamilton mini! I painted him very similar to the Blood Angel you painted here, though mine is an Exorcist, painted in the 3rd edition bright red scheme, as opposed to the modern brick red colour, or the Rogue Trader yellow, black and blue. Although I have a plan of painting my scouts in the Rogue Trader colours.
Great work. I still have that paint guide but none of the paints any more. I've got some Core d'Arms recently so will have a go at my old beakies. Will try the Blood Angels as per the guide!
Those beakies look good, lovely colours and highlights. Always liked that missile launcher design, its my favourite version held by my favourite space marine variant. Whats that you say .. a retro battle report? What a treat, excited already, I'll need some dunkers, Blood Angels v Orks, I see fun on the horizon.
Lovely stuff and a great result! Delightful. But watching you paint those armor basecoats with the world's tiniest brush pained me, lol. I promise you, a size 4 won't hurt you!
I had the space marine paint kit back in the day.... since first day I was suprprised how off few colours were: for instance, blood angels red was mainly a dark orange and salamanders green was a regular forest dark green... however 3 colors where truly good and matching the schemes: spacewolf grey-white, ultramarine blue and boltgun metal recently I came back to the hobby and I must say still have some of those paints working and in use (so, not so bad quality apparently... :) )
I got into the hobby around 3rd edition, but inherited this painting guide from my brother despite him having no memory of buying it or even getting into Warhammer seriously. Pre internet it felt like a relic (though it was probably only 10 or 12 years old at the time). Would love to see you attempt the Space Wolf scheme!
I used this guide and the original paints but on the modern Horus Heresy beakies and I have to say, Salamanders Black, is the nicest black paint I have ever used, smooth and velvety and a real joy to work with. Based on the guide, I don't think you went wrong not using a terracotta equivalent for the Blood Angel, it's a very dark brown and, follwing the letter of the guide exactly, it doesn't produce the bright orange red marine shown, although my own attempt did look good and I really liked it, but he wasn't orange!!
Thank you! Truth is, I couldn't find an equivalent for the terracotta that I was happy with, so stuck with Blood Red. Amazing to hear that your set is still going strong and giving you cool results on heresy stuff. Hope to get my hands on some originals one day.
@@edpaintsminisAll those old paints last really well (apart from one of the metallics which basically rotted/rusted in the pot and was notorious for doing so, mine hadn't ever even been opened and it was still useless!) although to be fair, I've recently been buying some of the old screw and flip top bolter shell style pots that GW made and even though all the paints are dry, I've been able to save them; not a swift process but it's doable. So if you do get some of the old paints and they aren't the best, they can be salvaged, to me, it's been like collecting old minis, all part of the hobby :D
Geez, everyone likes to rag on the Primaris Desolators for having weird-looking guns (and they absolutely do), but the OG missile launcher is also pretty crazy. Why does it have a propeller!? Great paintjobs, really looking forward to another batrep!
Oh i remember that set. I bought it back then when i was 16 years old back in 1989. But i did a mess with the colors trying to follow the instructions and painting a Blood Angel. To much paint and not understanding the text really good how they wanted the layers to go.
Great looking marines and good vid, sorry to say but after painting 200 plus armies historical and fantasy in all scales iv only ever painted straight out of the pot and found no problem.
Beautiful, especially that red! And the symbols - the Blood Anпel looks stunning! Salamander could use some flames, though... =\ P. S. No 'armor wash' from Coat d'armes? Or some black ink to stand it for it? I find that ink can have a more stark and interesting effect than Nuln Oil.
Totally agree on the 🔥, but I was too late! Next time I do a Salamander I'll double up to make up for it. The only C'D wash I have is Brown Wash. Trending towards an ink - absolutely amazing stuff!
It's the same manufacturer, but it isn't always identical colour-wise, and isn't trying to be. Warcolours do pretty good recreations of the original line (with the darker goblin green), and I think they've done the early 2e range more people know too now.

"Again, witness me painting directly out of the pot. Dear, oh dear..." As it SHOULD be! The essential nostalgia. Well done!
There's something very charming about those classic paint schemes on the og beakies.
We called them snoopy marines. These and some metal Mk IV s were, and still are, the pride of my collection
I got some old rouge trader marines and they were SOOOOOOOO FUN to paint! =)

Wow! That thumbnail looks straight out of an old citadel catalogue! Can't wait for the video
1:08 my favorite fact about this release is that all the space marines are named after actors from the 1966 Batman TV show.
I did not know that! What a great piece of trivia!
I have been catching myself more and more painting straight from the pot and...
...I like it no one can stop me it feels GOOD!
Watching somebody put those vibrant retro colours on his minis again makes me very, very happy!
Been paining minis for over 40 years. I am not a bad painter and still use paint straight from the pot.
I must have been around 10 years old when first I saw a whole Games Workshop display cabinet full of Rogue Trader Ultramarines. They looked great, too!
When painting was just a matter of fun and not a mad quest for the most-super-hyper-extra realistic effect
I am always trying to get better and expand my horizons with new techniques and tools, but man does it feel like work at times.
That biostrip reminds me of "the stuff", but it certainly looks like it gets the job done.
Hey, I found this jar of biostrip in my friend’s room. He even already had some minis in there!
When I saw you put the sergeant rank on the leg @11:09 I almost screamed. Remember trying to paint the ranks on the shoulder pads? I used to do the outline using a thin lead mechanical pencil before painting it.
Wonderful painting Ed and you are a master with freehand. Really enjoyed this video mate and congrats again on 10K subs mate
soundtrack is crazy
I love the old space marine sculpts. I can't bring myself to buy modern ones outside of the Horus Heresy line.
I love the Space Marine Painting Guide. It has great colour schemes and fascinating little bits of lore.
Everything about it is glorious, even down to the type face.
I salute you for this way of painting 🎨 😁
Great work Ed. I particularly liked the freehand work on the blood angels shoulder pad.
Cheers man! Always a little nerve-racking!

Thanks so much Billi. Great to hear you're still fielding the RT marines - that's really cool! May you paint the galaxy with the Emperor's Light!
Those beaked helmented Space Marines were the first I ever painted. Brings back a lot of memories. Great video, straight to the point.
This video is what I've been looking for. Been wanting to paint retro style blood angels for a rogue trader themed heresy army.
Beautiful
After 38 layers of paint I was half way to a consistent coat.

Great job! Would love to see you tackle the classic Dark Angels before the green came about.

Simple as.
Ive always wanted to try older style paints, but I fear I have been too spoiled by modern paint tech and they will just sit there only ever used once
coat d'arms is the closest paints brand to old gw paints
It's the same manufacturer, but it isn't always identical colour-wise, and isn't trying to be. Warcolours do pretty good recreations of the original line (with the darker goblin green), and I think they've done the early 2e range more people know too now.

Ultramarine one is too dark, original blue for UM is 50/50 ultramarine blue and dark blue (source 1993 heavy metal)
That has got to be the worst rocket launcher sculpt i have ever seen, fine painting though
