    GT4 is Porsche's best keep secret. I have owned 911's for 32 years. Thought I'd give one of these a crack....no regrets! I try not to compare it to my 911 Turbo or GT3. It is better on any country road or hill climb, it is seriously that good. It will beat both of my 911s, it is so grounded and FAST. On a track it holds it's own, not quite a quick, but near as. It is the best bang for ya buck that you can get in the Porsche line up.

    Hi Matt thanks for your awesome reviews on the GT4 and Spyder. Which one is the pick for the spirited country driving? Im leaning toward the spyder.
    I'm an e92 m3 comp owner, we both know how great that car is and will be a classic. Would you trade into the spyder over for the thrill, experience and joy of driving? I drive my m3 often with lots of weekend club drives, but it doesn't get me up early on a Sunday morning for the sake of going for a solo drive. Last car that did that for me was 370z 12 years ago (because 1st sportcar) I feel like the spyder/GT4 would do this? Cheers

    The thing that gives me pause is the long gearing. Engine begs to be wound up but doing so means driving in 2nd all the time or going speeds that’ll get you in trouble.

    • @marcfd3756
      @marcfd3756 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Please don't let the gearing dissuade you. You'll love the car and you'll love the gearing. You don't have to wind it out all the time to enjoy the motor (the power kicks in around 3500 RPM and builds from there) and I think you'll love the gearing after you've driven it for awhile. I know I do!

    Amazing review but I’d take the PDK. Gearing is just too high with the stick. 2nd shouldn’t end at 80mph

    • @randomhawks3232
      @randomhawks3232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      PDK only shaves 6-7 mph, so you’ll still be breaking the speed limit in 2nd. When you have cars that reach 200 mph, just comes with the territory - like every GT car Porsche makes.

    • @SuryaDe
      @SuryaDe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems like PDK also suffers from that gearing issue. That said since I did have the manual Spyder before I would opt for the PDK this time around.

    • @randomhawks3232
      @randomhawks3232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, common for all Porsche GT cars, which have high redlines and max speeds of 200 mph. You would need another gear or two or a very long final gear. Just comes with the territory. I have a manual in my 718 Spyder and love it. Had a 718 Boxster S with PDK and got bored. Great that there are now options for both preferences.

    • @bryantharris5914
      @bryantharris5914 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a little pricey for the regular Cayman's but for the GT4 it's probably worth a gear swap. Just go with the same ratios as the 911, problem solved.

      Everyday!!

  • @Hypersonik
    @Hypersonik 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The PDK is a must have and the reason I never got a 981 GT4. The ratios are too long. On the road the PDK is 7th gear and then down 5 gears in under a second to blast past traffic. On the track you have more ratios that are shorter and thus the engine feels more excited, more eager, plus you're thinking about revving it out rather than lugging it out at 87mph in 2nd gear.
    Telling your friend you have the manual will only make them think you're some sort of driving hero if they can't drive themselves.

    • @randomhawks3232
      @randomhawks3232 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You save a whole 6-7 mph with PDK; still doing 80 in 2nd gear…rather have the driver engagement with manual. Every GT car has the same issue. Track cars.

    • @Hypersonik
      @Hypersonik 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@randomhawks3232 So that's 10% lower gearing. A significant difference. Again, driver engagement - changing gear should be a subconscious process - something you do when you're weighing up the corner/maneuver. Involvement is feeling the car move, the forces, the responses, the shuffle, the balance.

    Unusual colour, but it doesn't work. The wheels are terrible. The car is terrific, but the PDK offers more: launch control, a signficantly lower 0-60 and a reduction in the poor gearing problems. And I say this as a manual box owner. Stupid door releases and not enough noise; not fixed by having the PDK. The PCCBs are amazing. Don't get it in yellow, unless you are happy to advertise your mid-life crisis. I have owned a 996 C4S, a 997.2 C4S and a 991.2 C2S; all were fantastic. But, for driver involvement and a track day focused car, I'd take the GT4 all day.
