    I will never be without tretinoin. I’ve been using it for nearly two years now and aside from getting serious with sunscreen usage, tretinoin is the single best thing I’ve ever done for my skin. My skincare routine is now much simpler because the tretinoin packs such a punch, I rarely get spots now, when I do get spots the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation fades so much quicker, my skin texture has vastly improved, my complexion is just much brighter and my skin is more even.
    My skin is not perfect perfect (it’s still skin at the end of the day), but it’s the best it’s ever been and I’m pretty darn happy with it

    I’ve been using tretinoin for about 3-4 years and I agree that sandwiching moisturizer and waiting at least 30 minutes from the first moisturizer to the tretinoin has made the biggest difference in the flakiness. I still do both even after all this time bc I’m afraid to go back to the flakes!

    great advice about easing in and not overcomplicating with tons of other actives. i also experienced no purging with tret (though i never dealt with acne prior and use it mainly for pigmentation and anti-aging) just peeling. i was using paula's day exfoliate in my routine 1-2 a week and removed it about 6 weeks in, as tret is already a strong exfoliant and less really is more in this regard. also starting at lowest possible tret strength possible is important.

    I was too greedy with my retinol the first time I used it. I saw amazing result within 3 days. My skin was pretty clear except for a couple of acne in between my brows, but I have acne scars on my cheeks. The skin texture improved so much within the 3 days. little did I know it wasn’t improving, it was preparing itself to peel off of my skin. I stopped for about a month because I destroyed my skin barrier. Slowly using it again, still peeling after the first use again but continued using it more slowly now. Oh I also purged really badly from the very first time using it. But it’s clearing up now, and it’s only been a month since I started using it again. I don’t have any active pimple, just scars. I love it, I will continue using it especially to see the anti aging effects.

    I’ve started using over the counter retinol 6 months ago and it’s the best discovery I’ve made in terms of skincare. Although during the first 3-4, the purging was very bad(almost to the point that I wanted to stop). I’m glad that I continued it cause my skin is luminous and silky smooth. And I have VERY problematic skin from acne, whiteheads and very oily skin. It’s a game changer

      I'm going to start tretion due to random adult acne 🙃 and I'm terrified of purging like I don't think I'll be able to mentally handle it, how did you handle your purging ? Also what cleansers and moisturizer did you use?

    • @vic902
      @vic902 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@deannavazquez4718 To deal with purging mentally, you just have to recognize that it’s a temporary phase and although it may look bad, the results you’ll acquire after will be worth it. With utilizing any form of retinoid product, you really wanna get rid of using any extra products or introducing other new products especially during the first 3-4 months. Simplifying your routine is really key. During the days I would use my retinol, after cleansing, I would go with my toner, my retinol then moisturizer. I recommend cereve for your cleanser and moisturizer, as they are very gentle and won’t irritate your skin beyond the retinol. I used a toner before my retinol as a form of moisture as I didn’t want to apply a moisturizer before the retinol as some people do to lessen irritation and it’s worked good for me. Find a fragrance free, moisturizing toner. I recommend looking at Korean/Japanese toners as they are way more superior than western ones. Hope this helps:)

      Over the counter retinol works pretty well also and costs less. Retinal is the strongest otc formula, retinol somewhat weaker. I love the Murad formula, it has a moisturizer so doesn’t leave you super flaky. Start slow with whatever you choose, like twice a week, then 3x a week, etc

    I’m only a month in and Tret is THE best thing I’ve ever done for my skin after always wearing 50+ SPF. I’m on 0.05 for anti aging purposes, 33 with paper fair dry skin with a lot of redness on my chest and cheeks. I’ve had zero dryness as I’m heavy on hydrating toners, I started with every third night, and now I’m on every second, I could go to every night already but I prefer to have a purely hydration night. My skin is so clear and soft my husband said it almost dosnt feel like skin lol. My redness has reduced by half when nothing worked on it prior! I’m wearing less makeup because my skins just so healthy looking which is hard thing to achieve when your as pale as I am. I’m able to wear in on my neck and chest with no issues using a hydrating toner as buffer. I’m glad I’ve started at 33 so that I can get in on the anti aging benefits while my lines are still fine, I wanted to start it years ago but I was doing ivf for many years.

    Great video Kelly! You gave excellent and clear advice about using tretinoin. I had used tretinoin, as Retin A, for years back in my 30s through early 50s (I am now 67) and still use it but just occasionally, like on the occasional breakout or around my crows feet (totally works). After regularly using tret for years and discontinuing either because my insurance stopped paying for it or just out of whatever, I didn't want to deal with the flakes and other issues of early use again with the 0.05% I'd always used. You reminded me that there's 0.025%, which is a perfect strength to start (or restart) at. My skin has tolerated "retinal" well in the meantime (a step stronger than retinol but still below tretinoin), so now I'm excited to ask my MD for an RX for 0.025%. The "sandwich method" as you outlined is an excellent way to go, especially for those of us with skin a little more sensitive, dry, etc. You look beautiful as always, my NY neighbor (I'm across the river in NJ). Enjoy this beautiful and a bit cooler spring we are having! 🌷

    This is a really fantastic video! Like you I've watched plenty of TH-cam videos trying to get educated about Trenton knowing before starting usage. I think all your advice is spot-on. I started right around the same time as you did actually. However I'm 45 and was dealing with oiliness, hormonal breakouts as well despite trying over-the-counter adapalene first for over a year. Like you I had no Purge at all. The first time I used it my skin acted like it was on fire using the gel .025%. Using it every third night with moisturizer sandwich method works great. Here at the 6-month mark I'm thrilled with the anti-aging results I'm seeing. Within one month I had my acne clear up and it was amazing. Truly it's a more powerful ingredient than anything else I've tried so far in the past 5 years of anti-aging skincare, and I've tried a lot. For anyone who is using adapalene for anti-aging, I highly recommend switching over to Trentinoin, there is just no contest, and I'm so grateful I was brave enough to try it. All those side effects in the early days are so hard to Grapple with it but eventually gets better and it's so worth it. I still only use it every third night because that's what I heard is the bare minimum, 72 hours apart in usage. My skin looks younger at age 45 than it did at age 40.

    I dont rlly know whats on my face but I wanna say acne which is what my dermatologist said but to me it doesnt its like blind pimples theres no head or nothing I also have eczema. My mom said it looks like a rash like hives like I was allgeric to something but its been constantly there for some months so im starting my journey today for 6 weeks hopefully it works because im in school and those kids r RUTHLESS...
    But this is my skincare routine:
    I started off on a shampoo that was prescribed to me for face/hair but the hair is like once a week but I try not to do that since I am African American.
    Then I moisturize with a lotion ngl my dermatoligst said Cetaphil but I was still dry and I heard Cerave moisturizer is better with Trtinoin
    Then at night I only do Cera Ve face wash and moisturizer
    Then the next day I do my shampoo(face)
    And at night I do my cerave face wash THEN my Tretinoin and if dryness which is pretty much guranteed with this cream use a moisturizer in which I use Cerave
    And then repeat I heard its ok to use Trentonoin daily at NIGHT since its very reactive with sunlight but i have sensitive skin so I do it every other

    Purging is actually an issue that affects a small %, its just that its so well known online people think that they will experience purging. You wont, if you start with a small % (0.01%) and sandwich your tret. Once a week for one month, wice a week for 2 months etc etc..
    Purging happens when people apply a small amount, and think it isnt enough so they re apply lots more and burn off their skin barrier.
    Simple skincare routine, cleanser, tret, moisturizer, vaseline under eyes to protect. Thats it.

    I just started Tretinoin a few weeks ago. You were one of the reasons I started looking into it. One key difference for me is that I have super oily skin in my T-Zone, to the level where I can only use aloe vera as my face moisturizer or I’m an absolute oil slick. Lol
    At first, I was just cleansing, using my staple Thayer’s rose water toner, aloe vera, Tretinoin, and aloe vera again, plus my eye serum and cream. I was using the Tretinoin every other day, and I found my skin was peeling on the off day, not the day of. I tried backing off to every three days and got peeling on both off days, so I started using it every day, and the peeling stopped. Weird, but my skin seems to like it.
    I’m now getting some purging, but the breakouts are different, less swollen and wet, for lack of a better word. They’re much easier to clear out, although they don’t fully heal as fast, probably because of the purging. My skin is a little sensitive, but it’s not unbearable by any means. My T-Zone is still a little oily but noticeably less so. The rest of my face is starting to get a little dry, but only slightly. I might add a light moisturizer just to those areas if needed.
    I had to ditch most of my skincare, as they contained active ingredients that weren’t supposed to be used with Tretinoin. I’ve now gotten new products containing the other ingredients I was previously using that were ok to use with Tretinoin, plus extra hydrating ingredients. I added hyaluronic acid and ceramide serums at night for extra hydration with the Tretinoin and vitamin c and niacinimide serums in the morning. This seems to be working well, and I’m happy with the ingredients I’m using.
    Aside from the purging, which I feel certain will pass, the slight dryness on the perimeters, the slight sensitivity, and this one spot in the crevice on one side of my nose that experienced purging and peeling simultaneously and is still healing, I feel pretty good about how it’s going!

    I have a strong hunch tretonoin triggers melasma on skin of colour. Last evening, my sister who's been applying Retin-A (0.05%) cream for the past few months alarmingly told me that she'd noticed the appearance of melasma on her face (for the first time), asking me if it was because of Retin-A. (Unlike me, she's had great skin all her life. She's in her 30s.) I've been troubled ever since, because personally I have also faint melasma on my forehead and both my cheeks which I can now say appeared after I started using Retin-A microgel (0.04%). It was my sister's query that made me join the dots. And yes, I apply sunscreen religiously (though many a time, I forget to reapply. Of late, I've been carrying a sunstick- Isntree). So my request to you is: could you kindly let me know if the culprit is Retin-A? Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

      Irritation, dryness and resulting inflammation aggravate melasma. If you use ANY actives that cause these and no sunscreen + any heat causing activities, melasma gets worse. Been there, done that ☹️ BUT, some of that old, deep rooted pigmentation may just be coming to the surface, which is a good thing! So hard to tell, unfortunately.

    I wish to start using tret for anti aging but in my country it is only on prescription, for acne reasons. I will try eating lots of chocolates which might cause my skin to breakout at the time i have a dermatologist appointment. I will ask to start it for acne reasons. Hopefully he or she will prescribe me.

    It was definitely the tret that softened the forehead line. Unless you’re using something in your routine stronger than tret. And I doubt that

    Does it take 3 months to see any results or 3 months for it to clear? I have been using for a month and a bit and I don’t know if I’m purging. When I started I developed a bunch of pimples but it’s been weeks and they are still there in the same spots. I’m not seeing any improvement and sometimes even new pimples in new areas of my face develop. Is this normal and part of the process I can’t find anything about it

    Im currently using retinol, hyaluronic acid, salicylic acid, AHA/BHA & niacinamide as part of my routine (alt days). Are these considered actives? If i want to start on tretinoin do I have to stop using the other products? Sorry if this is a stupid question. The more videos I watch, the more confuse I get

    • @anamikakhan593
      @anamikakhan593 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes all of these are Actives. And some of them pair really well with many other actives. But, you need to make sure you are not over doing with the actives especially the strong one's like Retinoids and AHA/BHA. Salicylic acid is basically BHA and there are some other acids like Glycolic and lactic acid which are AHAs. So those you should Probably not use for more than twice a week(though BHA can be used daily if you have extremely oily skin) and Retinol can be used on the rest of the nights but you should never pair it with any of the AHAs/BHA or some other actives like Vitamin C. But Niacinamide and Hyaluronic acid pair well with AHAs/BHA and Retinol/Tretinoin. And Retinols/Tretinoin and AHAs/BHA(AKA chemical exfoliants) must only be used in your night time skincare routine as they make your skin photosensitive. AND THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP OF ALL IS YOUR SUNSCREEN EVERYDAY. Find one that you enjoy using(but make sure its SPF50 with PA++++ for maximum protection) without religious use of sunscreen, You'll actually end up doing more damage to the skin than good. Hope this helps :)

    • @anamikakhan593
      @anamikakhan593 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And No you won't have to stop using other actives while you are on Tretinoin. You just won't be using most of them the nights youll be using Tretinoin. As I said Niacinamide and Hyaluronic pair really well with Tretinoin/Retinols and are suggested to help with dryness Tretinoin/Retinols can bring.

    Given where your acne (like on your cheeks) is located, maybe it’s your makeup brushes? I don’t know how often you wash them, but the acne scarring is where you put your bronzer. I wash my makeup sponge EVERY time I use it. In between frequent deep cleaning of my brushes, I also use Cinema Secrets for a quick clean. Just a thought. By the way, I meant to tell you that you look GORGEOUS in blue! Thanks for your well-researched and entertaining content 🌸

    It’s like no matter what I do, none of my doctors will prescribe me tret. It’s always clindamycin or an oral such as doxycycline. But those are always so temporary. I’ve had to change drs quite a few times due to moving these last 2 years but none of my previous providers will allow the idea of tret. It’s so frustrating and I can’t understand why.

      There are online services where a doctor will review your request and prescribe it for you. Even bill your insurance or send to a pharmacy. You do usually have to pay a consultation fee: mine was $40. I used Nurx, and it worked great.
