No. 2007 makes its way to (the new) Darlington Locomotive Works.

- As part if the process of moving the contents of our original workshop to our new, bespoke premises in Darlington, we had to load up Prince of Wales and take the locomotive on a short tour of the town to deliver it to our new home. We are sad to leave the historic Hopetown Carriage Works but excited to be starting a new chapter in the extraordinary story of the A1SLT.

@@phaasch trailer can be towed or unloaded from both ends. Notice the loco was hauled backwards but was then facing towards the tractor unit when unloaded...

This was a light load for him. It’s moving fully built locomotives is where it gets very interesting.
Seeing the engine like this gives a good idea on how impressive this loco is going to look, and what a terrific piece of kit that trailer is too.
I started life at 15 as an engineering apprentice at The Fighting Vehicles Research and Development Establishment. After nearly 40 years I ended up as Chief Design Draughtsman. Challenger 1 was the last. Now weeds are growing up in the car park and Challenger 3 is being made in Germany - ironic. Rolls-Royce engine replaced by a German one. Seeing No.2007 at least gives me some hope for our engineering future, but it's a very faint shadow of our past.
I think you would find a warm welcome in Darlington JP, many kindred spirits!
In the 50s/60s we were using German engines (under license) and transmission in our locos. I think the boiler for the P2 and Tornado are also done in Germany.
JP……you’ve just confirmed what I suspected. Design teams and manufacturing capabilities don’t grow on trees or the playing fields of Eton.

At least jobs are staying on the continent. Well, that's how put a positive spin on things (as an American) when I look at a tool, a pair of jeans, and so on and see "Made in Canada" or "Hecho en Mexico".

Seeing 2007 nearing completion gives me pride for a country I'm not from and unfortunately will likely never be able to visit due to financial reasons. It makes me wish us Yanks had more success at building 21st century steam locos. Cheers from America!
Prince of Wales is the biggest new build, but it's not the only one. In Wales the Ffestiniog Railway has just completed a new double Fairlie, and the Corris Railway has taken delivery of its number 10. There are several other standard gauge locos under construction at various sites in England, including a BR Clan class light Pacific. @silasfatchett mentioned Meiningen works in Germany - which is owned by DB, the national railroad company, has built the boilers for Tornado and Prince of Wales, several new narrow gauge locos for lines in eastern Germany, and repairs mainline steam locos for German and other European customers.

No, where there is a will there will ALWAYS be a way, particularly if money is the only obstacle. All the new build locomotives currently being constructed are not for glass cases in museums but for mainline operation by the many Locomotive Type (Class) Preservation Societies and private Railway Preservation Companies who own their own "historical" track . Having the Government owned Network Rail, (they own the Mainline Intercity tracks) sympathetic to the whole operation does help!!! Best of luck, creating your own luck!

Its only when you get a down shot you realise the hundreds of hours of work just making and fitting all the pipework inside the frame. And those wheels with polished rims look superb.
Looking a proper job now.
Legit, from a distance compared to say 2-3 years ago it really doesn’t look like much has been done.
Then you get up close and your jaw drops and the sheer amount of work done inside those frames
There's been a lot of work going on elsewhere as well Mike, in Irvine in Scotland, Ian Howitt's place and at Meiningen - this year will see the delivery of three huge components, the tender frames, cylinder block and boiler.

Very laudable in its own right James but not what we are about. Although we have 'improved' the design of our locomotives we have tried to preserve the original appearance of the prototype. The 5AT is a totally new design.

2007’s boiler is near completion in Germany and will be delivered this year.
And the cylinder block will be delivered soon also 😊
2025 is the planned completion date. Boiler and cylinder block due to arrive this year 🙂

I’ve understood that it’s going to have exactly the same boiler as tornado so it makes overhaul time quicker and the boiler has proven very successful

Too small. Not connected to the main line ... the new shed will be connected to the main line and to the 1860s Stockton & Darlington loco shed a short distance away.
In a few years time we will see that loco return to steam after the work is carried out

Where does the line go to where the loco is being loaded up ?? Is it connect to the rail network ? What's the 37 and why is it there ?
The tracks outside the Hopetown Carriage Works are just a couple of redundant sidings with no possibility of connection to NR because of the super-elevation of the curve outside North Road station. This was a big factor in relocating our works to the other side of the line since there is already an existing connection giving us access to the main line.

Literally on the same grounds on the other side of Darlington North Road Station/Head of Steam museum. Its on the Bishop-Saltburn line, which can connect to the main line at Darlington Station.

The boiler is a spare for Tornado, P2's boiler is still in Germany

We never had one in the old works and managed OK. A 'nice to have' but not, at this stage a 'need to have'.

As good and superb as this loco' video is ,where is the boiler ? Tornadoes boiler was recieved from overhaul and needed extensive work here in the UK to get it right ,let's hope the P2 s boiler does not need the same amount of fettling

I'm pretty indifferent to this engine. Also, to people wondering, this facility is less than a quarter mile from the original building. All the dramatic "we were sad to leave the Carriage Works" is just sentimental bunk. The new building is within view of the old one just across the tracks.
That's a pretty jaundiced view. Of course we were sad to leave the old building, some of us poured a lot of blood, sweat, tears and hard-earned into that building, spent many late nights (indeed nights) working there and commissioned Tornado there as well. If it had not been for the A1SLT the future of Hopetown Carriage Works would have been pretty insecure and the arrival of the Trust was, in part, the catalyst for the creation of the new Heritage Quarter.
If you're pretty indifferent to this engine, why bother to watch the video and comment?
One day someone will choose a location for a works with easy vehicular ingress and egress for super large Trucks and Trailers !!
It will be easier once the site works are complete.
With the new works connected to the main line it might not need large trucks and trailers to do moves for the Trust

Please take as look at our website(s) www.a1steam.com/tornado/about-tornado/tornados-story/the-full-story - These are 21st Century locomotives for the 21st Century, how much longer will locomotives that are already 80 to 100 years old be allowed to run on the national network? How many owning groups will now fit their locomotives with ETCS? By the way, Blue Peter is in the final stages of an overhaul and will be back soon, thanks to support provided by the A1SLT in lending our middle cylinder pattern.
Ah yes there’s always one in the comments 🙄 If you are so concerned about seeing 60532 and 46203 back in steam then which don’t you dip into your pockets and give to both of those trusts that own the locomotives, and you can thank the A1 trust in helping with the A2’s overhaul whilst you are at it.
