The P2 Steam Locomotive Company
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ธ.ค. 2013
The P2 is the most frequently requested locomotive The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust has been asked to build next. In addition to its striking looks, incredible power and undoubted glamour it also has around 70% commonality with 'Tornado', including the boiler, tender and many other detailed fittings. However, the design was never fully developed and the locomotives failed to reach their full potential. The Trust has therefore conducted a feasibility study into the construction of a new Gresley P2, to be numbered 2007 as the next in the series.
In September 2013 The P2SLC announced that it will build the 7th member of the Gresley P2 class steam locomotives. The project will demonstrate how the most powerful class of express passenger steam locomotives to operate in the UK can be fully realised. No. 2007 will be named 'Prince of Wales'.

No. 2007 makes its way to (the new) Darlington Locomotive Works.

As part if the process of moving the contents of our original workshop to our new, bespoke premises in Darlington, we had to load up Prince of Wales and take the locomotive on a short tour of the town to deliver it to our new home. We are sad to leave the historic Hopetown Carriage Works but excited to be starting a new chapter in the extraordinary story of the A1SLT.

A good test for some students would be to design a working steam valve gear without using a computer😮
Awsome😊
Granted its a bit late now, but I would have stirred up a friendly debate about the P2's name. Now Tornado got it just right, it evoked a certain storm in the hearts of rail enthusiasts and just sounded awesome to those who didn't follow the steam scene. It was the perfect name for all. But many people in our fine land are very much divided about the monarchy and naming an engine that is so decisive may not be the best approach. I personally would have stuck to something more neutral. Since its predecessor was Tornado, How about Typhoon or Tsunami or Hurricane? It seems much more in line with the current lineage of the A1 trust.
Late to comment, but I do hope David is still with us. Known him since University and am proud of his continued dedication to Steam Locomotion and these projects. My very best wishes to him and his family...💯🤞
I’m 73 will I live long enough to see it in steam
Just brilliant.
That movement is something right out of Euro Truck Simulator 2... Good work to the truck driver!
Just love the drone work!
I’ve not checked in on this project for a while and it was quite thrilling to see the progress made!
I love new-build steam projects. I can already tell that the P2 will be a sight to behold when its done? Also whats the deal with the Ruston 48 diesel at 1:26? Why hasn't that been saved yet?
I saw the part James may made!
Thank you. Impressive redesign and fabrication.
Why did it have to move workshops ?
surprised no overhead crane in the mew loco shed looks good though thanks
That is one very nice piece of steam engineering. Love the double poppet seat valve design.
Edward, "Shoted"? I think you mean Shot🤨.
A nice little video. Sad to hear about David but he seemed to be a realist about it up until the end.
Just WOW! This is seriously impressive. Back in the day when these were originally being designed, all they had were slide rules, log tables and graph paper. This is being done with modern CAD programs, stress strain analysis software, CNC cutting and machining, no doubt some laser scanning technology in there as well. Yet with all this assistance, its still a mind boggling undertaking. Its 1 thing to resurrect an extinct class of locomotive, going off the original drawings. Its quite another to do all that, but to also redesign certain aspects that were causing the original examples to under perform. You have some seriously clever people working on this! Thankyou for bringing us along for the ride 😀
The lorry driver was pure class
Fantastic ❤
Good to see progress like this!
Rip David Elliot such a loss to modern steam
1:17 Rest in Peace, David
Prince of Wales will soon be starring in fan made Thomas videos on TH-cam.
So, like on the road is just: La la la, gotta get to work or I'll be late, WHAT THE F- P2 on the truck in front of me: Hi
There's one vital thing missing.... Vtec!!
The Britt's, absolutely amazing, next they will be building brand new spots fitted with brand new Merlin's!!
No HS2 but we can still build steam locomotives 😮 strange but true!
I think the description should have the link where people can donate.
cinders and ashes! that looks incredible!
hold up what is that little ruston in the background
is the little ruston at darlington works 1 going to be preserved too
(4-8-2+2272)
Tobight on bottom gear, James goes to a train factory, hammond blows up a tesco and we have a leupold 2a7 on our track
I hope some day the detailed design and engineering would be published for every aspect. Thank you.
VERY EDUCATIONAL FROM A SAFETY STANDPOINT! LIQUID HYDRAULIC DAMAGE FAILURE CAN BE QUITE CATASTROPHIC!! I ONCE SAW A PHOTOGRAPH OF A PENNSYLVANIA STEAM LOCOMOTIVE THAT BLEW AN ENTIRE RIGHT FRONT CYLINDER HEAD OFF IN SERVICE!! WORSE YET, IN THE PICTURE WAS AN SWITCHMAN WHO WAS STRUCK DOWN BY THE FLYING CYLINDER HEAD!
It would be nice to see a animated video showing the 3rd cylinder and its piston driving the crank shaft of the driving axel. There is absolutely no images of this on other model engines and only descriptions on forums. It would be nice to have a clear idea on how this actually works.
The only true name for a P2 should come from a North British Railway Altantic locomotive.
When will LNER P2 No. 2007 Prince of Wales be in steam?
what was wrong with the old engine shed?
Too small. Not connected to the main line ... the new shed will be connected to the main line and to the 1860s Stockton & Darlington loco shed a short distance away.
Why the awful dreary music? It made it seem more like a funeral than a celebration of a great achievement.
David forgive me, closer inspection of the 3D drawing reveals that the inner valves are driven extended rocker shafts from the outer rotary cambox. It was the term rocker shaft that made me jump to the wrong conclusion vis a vis oscillating cams.
David, a detailed description of the camboxes themselvs and their operation would be very welcome. I understand from your description that you are going for oscillating cams rather than rotary cams as per the prototype.
So difficult to hear what is being said over that bloody organ music! Please dispense with this next time - it really isn't necessary and is hugely distracting.
Thanks to Steve, David, Ed and the whole A1/P2 team for arranging the day and for the terrific achievement of getting the new works into operation after so many challenges this year. Full steam ahead!
Fabulous Folks - Totally fabulous .. - I joined your group in 1990 - never looked back!
It's a cruel world when a brain dump is required but what a truly selfless idea.
Difficult to identify the beautiful organ music because it was masked by all the chatter . . . . . . .
WTF is that dreadful music all about? We want to hear the man speak. 😡
Congratulations Ed...... Well done all of you at Darlington... 200 years of D&S rlwy...... Hip..... hooray..... Hip...... hooray....
Really interested to listen to this gentleman but WHY OH WHY have you got that annoying music in the background. I want to hear him not the unwanted noise.
