  • Today we are back at the house we bought in Abruzzo Italy for Only 19K
Welcome to our new channel. This will be a series featuring our new adventure.
The story and renovation of a really cheap home we bought in the beautiful region of Abruzzo ITALY for ONLY €19K
Let's be honest, you can't even get a bathroom renovated for that much money in Australia, yet we found an Italian Home for Sale for less than €20K.
Truth be told, this house will need a lot of renovation works to make of it a home. The bones are great, so at least we can have a good start.
Some work will be for sure DIY as much as we can to keep it on a low budget. We do not want to over capitalise!
It is a stone home in a gorgeous historical village in Abruzzo, which is thousands of years old! The house itself might be a few hundred years old.
We can't wait to start revealing patiently the stories and truths of our inexpensive Italian Stone House.
Our idea is to show you every step of the way. The progress, the frustration, the achievements and the cost... So that you can see for yourselves if a Cheap Italian Home is an option as your Italian Dream Home.
    Welcome on board!

It must be so nice to have a partner you can go on this adventure with. Wherever you decide to make your home, you have each other, and that means you are always home. 💕

The urinal on the balcony is actually a floor toilet. Very common in the middle east. They usually have a water hose to clean up after you down load your poo.

Looks like a great place with loads of possibilities. If you like the doors, but want the glass to be double insulated you could have new double insulated glass packages made to fit the existing openings. I’d need to see more detail on how the existing glass is stopped in to be certain, but I don’t think you’d even have to modify the frame to do this. It’d be a huge cost saving over new doors and would preserve the vintage character of the original doors. Another thing I noticed is the stair situation, both to the cellar and the top floor. The cellar stairs are unsafe and you should consider making the opening to the cellar larger and adding railing around it. Lose the trap door, it takes away from the otherwise nice vibe of the place. New, safe stairs to the cellar would make it a more usable part of the home. On the stairs to the top floor, you might want to explore building something on the inside of the front room to allow you to access the stairs without going outside. Another idea might be to build stairs from the 1st floor back room up to your top floor. This might be easier. Finally, the old doorway on the ground floor that has been closed off, night make a cute built in cabinet. I saw some old doors in the cellar that might fit (worth a look see). It would, again, be easier and cheaper than “filling it” and would preserve some of the history of the house, and give you a charming feature for the room. It looks like you’ve gotten a great new project. I’ll enjoy watching you turn it into something stunning.

LEAW may be a good channel to help…they were able to save/strip and doublepane those doors as well as using the copper pipes as a feature and attach to the walls so they wouldn’t have to dig into the walls…just a thought. It turned out beautifully! Lovely videos, thank you!

So much potential. I would renovate upstairs first. Redo the bathroom, build a loft for an open bedroom and place a smallish kitchen in the corner next to the bathroom. Then i would live there and start downstairs. I would make a bedroom in the cantina and replace the stone stairs with iron or wood ones with a bigger opening. A new bathroom upstairs that shares the wall with the urinal on the balcony and place waterboiler and washing mashine in the urinal. Or have the bathroom downstairs with the bedroom if there is enough room for it.
When all ist done use downstairs myself and rent upstairs for extra income or for visiting family.
But that is what i would do😅. Will be realy fun to watch you work on your ideas.

I believe that's not just a urinal. It serves both purposes and have been in use on about three continents throughout history.

    Future Q&A
    1. Is there a plan to join the units?
    2. Family room kitchen up and bed bath downstairs?
    3. Aden always has all the ideas in home tours but he was silent about the plan. 😂. You ok Aden? ❤❤

Well that is not really a urinal on that back balcony but what many call a French toilet. Basically a squat and cra* toilet. It’s hard on one’s knees when you are used to a conventional toilet. There are variants of these that they use in Japan and Korea in traditional homes.

New on this channel, I follow an Italian couple who bought a house in Sicily. They have kept the old doors and shutters, had them renovated and then added new glass doors to stop the cold and wind. Their channel is Leaw, Leave Everything and Wander.

Bonjour de Belgique.. I love when you say " Urinoir", we called this " WC à pédales (pedal toilet) . Quite few years ago, these kinds of toilet were in stations along the highway. Women and men were going to shit on these toilets. I knew that time and I didn't like it. Imagine the position..lol.. Beautiful house with lots of potential and a very nice view. Lots of work to do. Courage to both of you for your projects..

‘Leave everything and wander’ may be a good channel to watch as they bought a property similar to yours and worked on a budget. Did lots of things similar to what you need to do with windows and doors and plumbing and such. Very nice family. The balconies they left to professionals to reinforce as they did not feel they were safe. They looked fabulous when they were updated. Your home is really nice and I can’t wait to see your inspirations come to life.

I like your little house. My plan is to purchase a small home like this in Abruzzo or Molise region, not a ruin but needs some TLC. I am learning Italian now, I speak a little bit of Spanish so that helps. But my goal is to travel back to Italy in Fall of 2025 to begin my search, but not ready to move until 2026. It will be just for me in my retirement years, and I'd like to spend that time roaming around Europe

19k brings a large place, renovation around 40-50k, windows, doors, curing any building mold, normal of age, would make the cantina entrances safe since it sets underneath the house. The views are lovely and this place would be amazing once your project is complete. The cobble stone streets would blend choosing a match..nature paths are beautiful. It will turn out beautiful as eventually surrounding houses would. Historical towns have a way of coming back to live as it's predecessors remember once again what it was like before they left. Best of luck to you both.

What nice big rooms up and down, not common at all! But don't save those flimsy doors on the balcony, you'll freeze! Or use them on the inside somewhere. Time to start looking at reclaim yards to see if you can find a good solid old door that you can dual pane.
The major issue I see is that you need an internal/private staircase as I would make the ground floor the kitchen and living area and the little room with sink, a laundry room and pantry, maybe fit in a little WC too and upstairs... your bedroom of course... but it's so big you can make it a bedroom/tv room as well with a little settee or comfy chairs area. The cantina for tools, wine, Xmas stuff and various other odds and ends, but the access is really inconvenient, which might mean another staircase (spiral?).
It's a big job and I'd like to see what you get up to. 😉

I expect you already know this, but before you start consult a geometra who will give you the facts on what is permissible, the regulations on ceiling heights (basement), making the house energy efficient under the current rules, where to get state subsidies (I got 50% discount on replacing all the old, draughty windows and doors in my house and am planning to get subsidises photovoltaic panel next.). The geometry will then sort out all the required permits for you with the commune. Don't bother with trying to save the old external doors and windows because you will very likely be compelled to change them anyway to make the house compliant. It will also make it possible to stay warm in the winter! Having said all that, your two big rooms are lovely and the views too. Look forward to seeing the progress.
