The family won the lottery by having Mike and his crew come and fix all the serious problems in their house. Very lucky that the tub did not end up in the kitchen while somebody was in it. Hopefully their son is getting better now, very cute kid. Sherrie “hit it like a man” lol. Was surprised that Frank didn’t go ballistic with all the electrical problem’s, as I was looking forward to seeing his reaction.

The best thing for me watching y'all is one the learning experience and two seeing the people's reaction to see how nice and proper things are once done by a crew that knows how to do thing the right way and means the subs and all....Gods bless you all. Would love to have y'all come and scare the crap out of me but I've resonantly have become disabled don't have any means until I have my disability claim approved mean while I'll always watch and learn.

You do the BEST you can with the information you have at the time. I HATE that the mother is so upset and blaming herself. Its not her fault, you weren't irresponsible! You were not informed!

I did a total gut and renovate job once. The place wasn't anywhere near as moldy, but that did not change the fact that everything had to go. By the time we were done, it was a new house.

Great episode but rather disturbing. Old homes have so much charm but, as shown here, much danger being the walls. The team did a good job, as usual.

After watching episodes like this one, I can't imagine buying a house without knowing what's behind all the walls. But, that would be ridiculously expensive unless we had the house built and each step inspected by someone like Holmes.

yep , if one is to do up a old building you do it right no matter how much you have to 'gut' and reinforce or flat out replace , no sodding ''patch onto or nail over x and y'' because that becomes 'hasty work is future dead weight' or its better to just replace the old work to a T the exact same way

Old homes are built better, it’s the improper renovations that make them bad.

I was really impressed that Martin took the time and effort to test his work for leaks. That's real professionalism and someone who cares about his reputation. I hope anyone in a similar trade or hoping to be, can use him as a role model.

This happen to one of my children. We had an opportunity to send him to a brand new school. Many of the best teachers transfer to that new school. We were so excited! But then the teacher & children got sick. Almost every week our son got nauseated and would be sent to the office and the nurse would take his temperature and he had a low-grade fever so of course I go and pick up my son. By the time I got home, he was perfectly fine he didn’t have a fever. He was no longer nauseated. The school tried to hide what was going on. The whole school the way it was manufactured was giving off formaldehyde poisoning. They decided to fix the problem by putting in ceiling vents and fans to re-circulate the air from inside to outside. That was their fix it didn’t work so once we found this all out, we sent our child back to the neighborhood school. Unfortunately if has been a coverup. Now it is the school where migrant children and economically disadvantaged go to. Many of the parents are agricultural workers.

who is the 'they' that fix the problem by putting in ceiling vents? And if it is not up to code why is the city / district / government not condemning the school building. And... what about the staff there, are they also economically disadvantaged, so they stay? Don't they have workers safety rules to fall back on. I mean. Formaldehyde poisoning would be a valid reason to refuse to do the job., right? It's a weird story.

They start by blaming the foam insulation. Then it turns into a moldy basement. Mold is a big health problem. Glad Mike's crew got it corrected.

I think it was one of those things where the foam could cause long term health effects but the mold was probably the root cause.

we hired a contractor for an exterior wall that was in horrible condition, and I saw them ready the whole sheet metal for the flashings of the door and window because some had a super tiny dent.
This is what a contractor should be doing. I’m not from America but seeing how it built there is very disappointing.

I get the “best thing to do” is to replace all the electrical, instead of doing little bits here and there. But almost no one can afford to have their entire house gutted just to upgrade the electrical system. It bothers me that they act like doing anything else, is bad or wrong. Not everyone can win the lottery so to speak and have Mike Holmes come in and give them what is essentially a new home.

Lots of shitty Archie Bunker type homes like that in Toronto. The shitty ones like that would set you back 1.5 - 2 million dollars MAYBE 3 or more then you need to spend $500k to 1 million to fix it up. The housing market in the last 15 years has gone haywire in Canada. It's happening in the US. I live in California and a piece of land just before pandemic was 40k overnight went to 385k.😂😂

It would cost almost a minimum of $200k to fix this mess.Structure, all new plumbing, new furnace and duct work, flooring, framing, all new electrical, insulation, new kitchen, weeping system, 2 new bathrooms($50k alone), new basement floor, drywall. Hundreds of thousands of $$$.

    • @jdougn2255
      @jdougn2255 หลายเดือนก่อน

Agreed. But most people buying a home like this won't have an extra 200k. The money would be better spent to build new. But then, as Mike said, the news home aren't built well either and are only for show.

If the bedroom being occupied by their son, is the coldest location in the house and is causing your child respiratory problems, wouldn't the logical and responsible thing to do would be to move him out of there?
