A program that teachs the owners what to look out for, what to ask for, and know that this is an ongoing dialogue and negotiation before the first bit of demolition is ever done. Lots of homework needs to be done before saying yes to any project.
I worked as a housekeeper for a family with a faucet like the one they have. The family had a disabled child and that was SUCH an easy change to the faucet to make the CNA, and the nurses caring for the child more efficient
The contract should be in 3 installments. never pay more then 30% on start - when they do the demo. make sure all permits will be pulled and a engineer looks over the plans. That way if you have to make changes he can address them. make sure the electrician is licensed and permits pulled and inspected before closing up any walls.When I did the kitchen remodel, the licensed electrician had to fix a bunch of stuff that wasn't up to code, and some was illegally done(never inspected).
Mike is right. The only way to do a kitchen remodel on the "cheap" is by yourself if you have the talent. It cost me 18k to completely redo my kitchen. Saving money on ikea cabnets allowed me to buy Italian porcelain tile for the countertops and backsplash. Large format 24" x48" Still was 1,000 bucks. LVP flooring. Bosh induction range. Only thing i contracted out was the plumber to move the sink stack. I did the electrical. (my county allows homeowners to do so as long as its permitted.)
I had one of those touch faucets in my previous home. We loved it. So I put one in my new home. It used a light sensor in the inside curve of the hoop instead of touch. I hated it, when it worked. It failed often right out of the box. My curious cat would trigger it while watching me use the sink. The rim of the pot I was filling would falsely trigger it. So I switched to the touch again and love it.
Laura was very naive. She must be very trusting and honest, and unfortunately she believes other people are too. Sadly, scum takes advantage of people like Laura. A lot of people that end up calling for Mike have been through this.

She was absolutely naïve and stupid to not check with other people who maybe remodeled their kitchens or bothered to look up “what is the average kitchen remodel cost and what does that include?,” before hiring those scammers. I have now done two whole house renovations, complete with installing new kitchens and baths. I don’t know anything about building or construction, which is why I googled everything. In other words, how much does the average bathroom renovation cost? How much does the average kitchen renovation cost? And what is included in that cost? I also googled how to properly do most of the trades, so I would have an idea of what was required. Even with all that it’s still might not be possible to spare yourself from poor workmanship if your contractor hired unqualified people. You need to monitor the job or better yet, hire an independent inspector at each critical stage of a major project.

My opinion on the kitchen, is that the top of the cabinets should have been filled with wood to the ceiling. All that gap does is collect dust and will be a challenge to clean! The wall color blue would have looked better if it was just a couple shades lighter. A hint of color and not in your face color. Plus a lighter shade would make the room look larger.
Agree, I hate that space between the top of the cupboards and the ceiling! In my last place I insisted that they went to the ceiling, unfortunately in this house they’re not…..

My wife and I built our own kitchen, but we have 40 years of experience. We would never hire somebody we did not know. We hired a friend to upgrade our bathroom for a no curb shower. Our new kitchen cost 4 grand and our new shower cost 4 grand. We didn't need permits for any of this work because there were no changes to the utilities. We did add a half bath, and we got permits for a full bath just in case. If you don't know how to do it yourself, ask 100 people. There are a lot of crooks out there. I wouldn't recommend going to a big box store and choosing someone on their list. I would go to a plumbing store, a tile store, a cabinet store, a lightingf store, little stores and ask for trusted contractors. Mike doesn't live near you.
This place I'm in at is the same so much wrong but if you catch them in the act or point out way to many people saying what they are doing is wrong like I did we are the bad guy make it worse instead of making it right and harass and bully and bad mouth and try to force me out so I 100% agree with Mike.
Wait, the contractor gets to pick who the references are? I have an idea. An Escrow company, once a contractor has a proposal the home owner pays the final total to the escrow company. The company sets up a schedule of milestones with the contractor. Milestones will include getting permits and passing the inspections. This includes inspections from the escrow company as well. The schedule would also mandate that the final payment would be 1/2 the total and would not be available until after the home owner signs off. No deviation from the work contracted is allowed, by either the contractor or the homeowner. The plan is frozen before work can begin. The contractor cannot ask the homeowner for any money, they only get paid by the escrow company.
I Agree about the particle board cabinets; I bought a manufactured home and the kitchen cabinets were - of course; made of particle board and were laminated with a wood veneer. Well after about 12 years of light use they tarted to degrade; I ripped them out and replaced them with semi-custom cherry cabinets, and I made sure plywood was used when I ordered them from Shenandoah Cabinetry. YES - - - - - there was an up-charge of around 15 to 20 percent for the plywood construction... Mike's going alittle overboard about the fabulous cabinet construction on this episode.

Wine racks in kitchens:- A very BAD idea, as wine needs a cool environment, hence the traditional "Wine Cellars" that were so popular - and still are with everyone who knows about wine. If you have a underfloor cellar, reserve some space there for your wine racks. Wine should be stored in cool, dark areas, free from temperature fluctuations, movement and vibrations.

I completely understand where Mike is coming from with the whole "due diligence" thing for the homeowners, but there is also a social contract that the government you are paying for is making sure that potential bad actors...... Who are advertising in local publications....... Are legitimate, licensed, insured and have a clean history of performance. This "company" clearly did not and had defrauded and endangered countless victims before finally being brought to justice. Also, where was the "code inspector" that any major kitchen reno requires for approval? They broke into plumbing, electrical and structure to do that reno. At least two permits had to be pulled (electrical and plumbing) More government graft and chicanery?

$19,000.00 to makeover an entire kitchen? That seems incredibly cheap. Even if this was 20 years ago ,it still seems like a ridiculous price. My friends paid $86,000.00 in the 1980's for the same size kitchen. They very had high end appliances and the counters were tiled. The cabinets are hardwood like these were supposed to be and formica lined. Granted, I live in a HCOL West Coast city, but the Canadian dollar is 2/3's of the American dollar. Something is off here, but it may be that we are screwed by the American form of capitalism.
I'm Australian. In 2020, I redid my kitchen. The kitchen consisted of 2 lower cabinets - 1 containing the sink + 4 drawers, the other had a cooktop + oven & storage, with 1 upper cabinet hiding the rangehood venting to the outside (it wasn't actually vented to the outside). All I did was to replace the 2 lower cabinets with new ones & fix the flooring of the entire open plan kitchen, dining & living area. I For the kitchen I got 2 quotes. 1 was for a flat pack kitchen from Bunnings - big box hardware store over here. Our Lowes. Cabinets made from composite materials plus laminate countertop - $3500. The quote for the demolition of the old kitchen plus install of the flat pack but sans electrical & plumbing - $3500. Neighbour was a cabinet maker, so I checked out the latter price with him - he told me it was a day's work (so 10 hours) to demolish & install. I flipped - why should an unqualified person get paid more per hour than my disabled son's psychologist to do a job I could do. So I said no AND reported the "tradie" to his company - Hire a Hubby franchisee. Using a cabinet maker & the same materials as the flat pack - all up $7000, INCLUDING plumbing (replacing sink) & electrical (stove & rangehood reinstall into new cabinets). New linoleum flooring for kitchen & living area - linoleum $2500. ALL values in Australian dollars. I DIDN'T replace my stove (it would've cost me $650 for new cooktop/oven combo if I had chosen to do so) or fridge, but did buy a new microwave, range hood & sink. I got the range hood and sink on special from Bunnings (Aussie Lowe's - here Lowe's is a clothing store) for all up $300. Plus, $150 for a new microwave. So you CAN do a new kitchen for under $10,000. It has to be a small kitchen and you have to go basic materials but it is possible to keep costs down.

I just renovated my kitchen two years ago. It was a gut renovation using a contractor and a big box store. The crew was great and I am very happy with the results. But even this kitchen, which was not high end, cost over $40,000. This was the second kitchen I had renovated, and the first one, which was more than a decade earlier, cost less than half of what the more recent kitchen cost. (In that kitchen I used solid wood cabinets with dovetailed joints from Cabinets To Go, which sells “ready to assemble” cabinets. I was very impressed with the quality of those cabinets. But they were not available for my second kitchen renovation). In both kitchens, I installed new appliances and stone countertops. I did extensive research on everything I bought and vetted the contractor. I admire Mike Holmes so much for helping people who have been taken advantage of by unscrupulous contractors but anyone with an ounce of sense would know that paying only $19,000 for a custom kitchen these days is impossible. P.S. I hate the blue (though the painter did a good paint job) and I think the backsplash looks too busy and dated. Other than that, this kitchen is well built and will serve the homeowner for years to come.

Rooms were to small for dark colors. Trim over cabinets should have went to ceiling. The fridge looks oddly located.

You can barely get a granite or quartz countertop for $19,000 depending g on size of course.
Buddy, even in 2024 and canadian dollars, I can build a DIY kitchen for under $10k.Especially with those cheap particle-board cabinets.

He thought something was wrong, but from her admission, she kept arguing to get her dream kitchen, and he caved because it wasn't worth the fight. This isn't a matter of misogyny or sexism; this is a straight-up unhealthy relationship. And the very worst part is being right in this situation doesn't have any great sort of prize your wife is still pissed off and bitter about what happened and you're pissed off with her for not listening or believing you. Do you think they stayed married if that's the sort of communication they have?
I just renovated my kitchen two years ago. It was a gut renovation using a contractor and a big box store. The crew was great and I am very happy with the results. But even this kitchen, which was not high end, cost over $40,000. This was the second kitchen I had renovated, and the first one, which was more than a decade earlier, cost less than half of what the more recent kitchen cost. (In that kitchen I used solid wood cabinets with dovetailed joints from Cabinets To Go, which sells “ready to assemble” cabinets. I was very impressed with the quality of those cabinets. But they were not available for my second kitchen renovation). In both kitchens, I installed new appliances and stone countertops. I did extensive research on everything I bought and vetted the contractor. I admire Mike Holmes so much for helping people who have been taken advantage of by unscrupulous contractors but anyone with an ounce of sense would know that paying only $19,000 for a custom kitchen these days is impossible. P.S. I hate the blue (though the painter did a good paint job) and I think the backsplash looks too busy and dated. Other than that, this kitchen is well built and will serve the homeowner for years to come.
