im sure Liam loves Caleb with all his heart, but you can feel just how much fun Liam is having as Vax again
Not having any bonus actions up until the final boss fight was definitely sucking the fun out of him as Caleb.
Of course he was having fun, he was cheating ridiculously. Not only was he wearing 2 vestiges, but he was attuned to 4 items. And for some reason even after his haste was dispelled he kept doing action, action, bonus action. I love Liam, mostly for the way he doesn't meta game, but I was really disappointed with his choices in this one.
Agree 100%. Loved how they were having fun but was reminded how much I always hated Vax. He was always powergaming a lot, doing things he shouldn't be able to do. Like switching daggers for his main hand mid attack. And he pouts when someone manages to hit him

Ok hear me out, when Beau went "You?!" when she saw Molly, and his response was "What did you expect?", made me think that this Mollymauk is from a timeline where Lorenzo never killed him, he survived and kept adventuring with the nine until he got to the level we see in play here, so his confusion to why Beau is surprised to see him is because to him, he practically sees her on a daily basis, so there's no reason for anyone else to have shown up.

@@bishop6218 Nah, most/all of them are married. Travis in particular is VERY protective. They all did an interview in which they were all asked (except Travis and Laura) what it's like to be married to Laura Bailey. Most of the reactions were, "Travis/Laura/My spouse is going to kill me."

@@HinataElyonToph Tbh, I would imagine Kingsley hadn't been created at the point they filmed VM Vs M9. The final ep of c2 streamed a week before this one shot was posted, but I would guess the one shot was pre-recorded long before the end of the campaign.
I love that I had to keep reminding myself that, despite feeling like people were missing, all the cast was actually there and it was purposefully half the characters.

*Veth voice:* that's the best spell in the game!
It's really good offensively, to shoot ranged attacks out of (at Advantage because you're not visible to the target). Perfect for a hexblade using Eldritch Blast, much better for them than a single-class Paladin of the Open Sea. And perfect for a couple allies to stand next to you and also shoot out, especially a ranged rogue like Veth for free advantage for sneak attack. (Best spell in the game!)
Defensively it's a problem because your allies can't see in to heal you, or in melee because it obscures enemies from your allies. OTOH, it can prevent some of those enemies from seeing. And prevents distant enemies from healing the one you're meleeing with, so it could let you 1v1 someone in melee if their friends aren't close enough to get in and stumble around.
Fjord has only ever tried to use it defensively, and usually in melee, and often in the way of line-of-sight from M9 ranged to squishy targets that aren't on the melee front-line on the other team.
It would have stopped Scanlan from counterspelling his Thunder Step if he'd cast Thunder Step at 10 ft range (where it still does damage), instead of walking right up into Scanlan's face so he could see Fjord. Counterspell only works as a reaction to someone you can *see* casting a spell.
Fjord's 2nd-biggest enemy (after turtles) is Marine Layer the way he uses it.
@@Peter_Cordes Agree... I feel like Travis never wrapped his head around the tactics that would make it work. Like comboing with Nott and Jester. Jester could dip in and out with her duplicate and create a lot of confusion. Nott /Vethcould use it to hide in open terrain, etc.

The idea of the Percy/Molly switch like this is actually so fking genius. It accommodates the odd number of players while making it so neither team is unfairly balanced. The gem gives the regular team members something to fight over as a boon, and the odd man out still gets to play the whole time without feeling like they are unfairly beating the other team. You don't force Tal to sit on the bench nor give him a reason to feel bad for making the fight unfair. His job is to fuck up people, the others get to fight over who he gets to fuck up/how.
And they can do it again if they ever do the other half of each team. Sam can switch between Terry and Nott/Veth
I think the biggest issue here is the fact that players can get knocked out permanently. If they ever do something like this again, the knocked out player should just respawn. It makes it less punishing and also means players are more likely to go for kills as it isn't game ending.

I've never actually watched campaign 1, so I knew Liam was a crazy cool rogue and all but this is really the first time I fully realize the WHIPLASH he must have gotten going from THAT to a squishy human wizard with a 15 ac and not even 100 hp

@@quantumofzentrix2748 rogues do get uncanny dodge and evasion at lvl 5 and 7 respectively, and their ac can get relatively high as well, so they can dodge quite a bit of damage
I mean, Caleb literally has wish, time stop, disintegrate and a lot of other busted spells

SPOILERS FOR CAMPAIGN 2: I love how Molly's appearance here mirrors his entire campaign 2 run: makes a flashy entrance, does some damage, fjord (almost) screws him over in combat, uses some truly crazy unique skills that hints at something greater, taken away just when his groups start to get into a good rhythm , and then appears at the end but doesn't do anything and just adds SO MUCH SASS.

This kinda highlighted how underrated Fjord's tankyness is. The whole of Vox Machina's team was targeting him from the get go and he just took it so that the other two went undamaged for a so long. His healing and locking down the casters in fog was a major contributor to their success.

I don't know the rules, but it annoys me that Beau's deflect missiles avoids necrotic and lightning damage. That seems stupid. It should only negate non magical damage.

Mollymauk using Curse of the Eyeless to protect Beau from getting hit by Vax actually made me tear up a little
I played a Blood Hunter character that uses that curse; it is soooo op I love it!
What I found really impressive about this fight was the way the Nein worked as a team to take down each VM member individually. Mollymaulk dispelling Scanlan was amazing. I wish he was on the field for longer. We only just got a taste of what he can do.

Honestly I was so afraid Fjord would get downed first and early on cause that feels very on brand and even though Travis is a really good sport, he seemed to be having so much fun I didn't want him to die early. Thankfully the tides turned almost immediately and Fjord got the comeback he deserved. I honestly didn't expect Scanlan to die so quickly and especially didn't expect Beau to pretty much singlehandedly take down Vox Machina.

lol i know we say that but that marine layer protected fjord like a mofo during that round, vax couldn't target him, neither could percy if vm had gotten him back. fjord's got a lot of hit points, he can take whatever scanlan and pike dish out.
I mean during the Lucien battle it helped several of the Nein including the clerics! They weren't able to be targeted by the eyes while they were obscured. Saved everybody's asses.

@@criticallol3039 True, but Yasha packs a mad punch as well and Caduceus is a support beast. Not even taking Caleb being kind of a secondary healer because of Polymorph into account. And don't forget, VM will have a harder time actually killing Yasha than the M9 will have killing Grog because of the Zealots Rage beyond Death!
In any case, that battle will certainly be as exiting and entertaining as this fight was.

With Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 underway and the announcement of a Mighty Nein animated series in the future, I think it's time to revisit this as a fun animated crossover short
It's kind of sweet how much difficulty Ashley has with attacking the other players when you consider how often she was forced to as Yasha.
This is really weird: even though the entire cast is there, it still feels like only half of them really are...

@@IceKyuubi he does in fact have something to keep him going. relentless rage would technically let him go for three more turns after hitting 0 because he can feasibly hit the 10 15 and 20 dc easily.
I really hope they'll do a revenge round with the other characters. Vex, Keyleth and Grog against Yasha, Caleb and Caduceus with Veth changing in Taryon as the wild card.
To be honest, I mostly want a pure barbarian fight between Grog and Yasha. He can outdamage her, but she'll be harder to put down.
That would be amazing, but it would be either Grog vs Yasha or Keyleth vs Caleb depending on level
I haven't seen VM yet, so I don't know Keyleth's healing powers, but that feels unfair if VM doesn't really have a healer and MN has Cad.

Yasha could also fly which would be to her advantage but then she'd have to deal with Vexs' indignation that another person has wings and not her lol
@@ellasamuelsson Yasha's flying speed is useful, but she's still a melee fighter. If she wants to hit Grog, she has to get close (and contrary to her, he has access to range attacks thanks to his Chain of returning. And depending of Travis' choice of items to attune to for this battle, he might also have his Boots of Flying (ngl, a aerial battle between to raging barbarian would be pretty freaking awesome)
This reminds me why I like Travis so much. Even while getting pummeled he's asking if it should have been more damage instead of getting annoyed about it. Love his attitude.

For real, Laura was INSANELY brilliant with Jester's positioning and use of duplicity there. She spent the majority of the fight being tucked away in her lil' gopher hole, out of most people's line of sight, all the while getting a bunch of solid hits in. Fantastic.
@@alleycat2297 I think it's spcifically highlighted by the fact that usually, everybody knows she's using Duplicity and the DM just has to RP the ennemy getting confused. But here, it was a secret between Laura and Matt so the opposing team and the audience were genuinely taken aback by the fact that this wasn't actually Jester.

So if it had been a high roll then we might have believed that it was her and had taken damage and so might have caused more people to waste their action on her . . .

VM was definitely stronger on paper, but they were purely reactive and didn't really cooperate.

I always saw Fjord and Beau as the ruthless ones in m9. Fjord was willing to sacrifice allies, Beau murdered a dude with acid etc.

@@iwillcry And the thing is... Beau didn't WANT to kill that guy with acid, but had no choice when he was woken up. In this instance, since mercy was punishable, it's here that she could indeed be merciless. The way I see it, "Thunder Beau" is what happens when the one who normally only has a small percentage of her kills be against other humanoids ends up going full Cobra Kai. No mercy.
Otherwise, no, Beau is nowhere near as ruthless as Fjord would be.
Now just imagine if Mollymauk made it to this level in campaign 2. His moves with Beau would have made a terrifying combo.
It would have been very different without Caduceus' heals and debuffs though so maybe they wouldn't even have all survived.

Taliesin's screen shifting over to the other side every time he swapped was great too, a good use of editing since every player had their own separate angles instead of a shared screen like normal.
