I can’t believe the others managed to create characters that are insane enough to make Taryon Darrington seem like the most sane and responsible member of the party...
I like to think there was an email that Marisha sent to the crew with guidance on character creation for this live show that went something like this: "Go nuts. P.S. Dibs on Bard."
@@karahtar I like to think there was a sort of gradual progression of insanity among the applicants, and that's partially why tary held out so long. The crazier they were, the longer they stayed
I think these characters are perfect for live shows. They are not as serious of a group and the cast can relax and play up the comedy more for the audience, than they can with their main characters since much more is at stake in the real campaign.
@@7on I think its absolutely fine if they reuse these characters since they don't have an important story arc to solve. They are comic relief characters perfect for a live audience. Although I would love to see an one shot with the cast playing completely randomized characters (including stats) and be forced to improvise on the spot. That would be very fun. Also only randomized NPC's for Matt too. DND Beyond has a built in randomized so they can just roll a random character live right in front of the audience.
it's also why the vox machina one shots were so great. It was still more serious than this one, but they were making more jokes than in the main show. Partially because they had a live crowd to please, but also because the main story was over and the World-level threats were dealt with.
I would still watch the shit out of this if they would continue this tbh. They could even make a campaign on all live sessions with those crackheads. It's really entertaining^^
Skeptical Caveman that doesn’t sound too too fun to be honest. Because then you get a bunch of random characters that don’t have their shit together it’s boring as fuck to watch there is nothing interesting about that, it’s be more acting’s than D&D at that point. With no substance, the thing that makes these fun for me at least is seeing the characters the players made. A completely randomized game would just make it a party show. This is a D&D show, in my mind at least. The thing that makes the show so good ARE the characters. Take that away and it’s just a one shot, the appeal is in what makes these particular people interesting.
Ashley: presenting the weather forecast. Liam: Attending an art gala. Travis: watching a football game Taliesin: hosting an occult meeting Laura: attending an awards show Marisha: going to a 50's themed dance party Sam: playing in the football game Travis will be watching.
David Zammit as you know, any occult meetings must be done in your pyjamas, otherwise you are offered to the gods for disrespecting the ancient old rules (dormiens conterentes praecenta) written in dead language.
lmao Travis looked so excited when Liam went with such a deep voice and then came out with his own helium voice for his halfling and I love it so much. That was the best character intro ever for the two of them
How perfectly chaotic that Taliesin makes the high fantasy equivalent of Batman/Nite Owl (complete with badass gritty voice ) only to be pulverized immediately by Laura's adorable pink haired Avatar style monk
@@draochvar9646 Oh yeah, Monks are a good utility martial class, but the aren’t the best one on one fighters compared to a lot of other martial classes.
We all were! That's why it was so great! (And the "BANISHMENT!" will be a new classic for Travis... that was just awesome comdedic timing, and totally rooted in Macaroni's character!)
@@christopherbacon1077 honestly I'd be fine with them as a one shot group. Keep the light heartedness and goof through all the sessions while still having em be fun and intense.
>Matt comes out in funny costume >Camera is blocked so I can't get my one good look at it >Go to complain >Realise it's because Matt is the only one getting a standing ovation from the whole crowd I can live with that
My favorite part of this whole session will always be when The OwlBear resists the fire damage and Travis and Co were like "You don't resist that" and he just smugly confirmed he does
I'll never stopped to be impressed by how much personnality Matt manages to put in a creature who's vocabulary is only composed of the syllabes Ta and Ry specificaly prononced in that order.
another little detail i enjoyed is that taryon made vex sound alright in comparision to the rest of vox machina who dont really do anything and are made to sound less heroic then they actually were in his books, because he ended up enjoying vex while the rest of the group treated him not as well
It reminds me a lot of my brother - he read a TON growing up, and would look up big words to know how to use them. He just never bothered looking at their pronunciation - so he now as 43 year old adult has a *huge* vocabulary, but mispronounces the words he uses constantly lol
All my love for Marisha's character. She took that hilarious radio ad that she did with Sam, months ago, and used it to create one of the most original adventurers I believe I've ever come across. I want that bard to pronounce every character of every syllable of every word, for MANY more adventures to come.
That's kind of a broad parody of the mid-atlantic accent that was taught in boarding schools and drama schools in the early 20th century. It's actually a constructed accent that has to be learned, there isn't a place where that's the local accent. Love the way Marisha uses it to define the character.
@@aisekrem3216 errrr... So... turns out I misremembered who did it. The voice I was thinking of belongs to Laura Bailey, not Marisha Ray. Which means that Marisha loved it enough to take what Laura did and put it into a character. Sorry for the fault memory, Laura and everyone else! Was still loads of fun. th-cam.com/video/S03oJyauWYg/w-d-xo.html
@@joeyherne this is true only because Sam always dresses up. It's true for Taliesin because he's Executive Goth. His normal clothes are just *like* that.
@@vomitfountain I imagine the things he ends up with for props there are part of the prop collection for the company seeing as the ads are from the company.
I'm so happy Taliesen is discovering the delightful synergy of Rogue/Barbarian. I played a Bugbear who tried to be a refined gentleman. Turns out you can still use your Str with a finesse weapon and get the benefits of Sneak Attack, which resulted in my character holding their rapier in an imitation fencing stance and then just whacking people with it like a baseball bat.
"Hey Lionel? How do you say 'I'm sorry' in Duck?" (Matt makes a duck sound) (Ashley tries to imitate the sound... but fails adorably). Kills me everytime!!! XD LOL
wolfebro No it isn’t. If you don’t count Flando the top comment is the one by Dr. Cimmerian with 1.1k. There are several others as well with more likes and engagement.
The Owlbear is unironically a dope character. The combo Rogue+Barbarian is awesome and the idea of a batman wannabe skulking in the woods with an owlbear pelt on the back is both hilarious and actually pretty cool.
If I ever get into dnd I would love to do owlbear. But not the same guy, The owl bear can be a mantle that's passed down to a worthy comrade. Such as the pirate from the princess bride or captain falcon.
@@bearbones7913 Captain Falcon is a legacy character?? I thought he was just... one guy. Granted, the only things I know from F-0 I learned from Smash Bros. but still...
@@rhodenaros okay what if your owl bear character was a barbarian tribesmen bent on justice who moves to the big city to take down a criminal empire that kidnaps his people and threatens their way of life. So they take up the cunning of the rogue in order to take them down
By the love of all that is holy, please make the Darrington Brigade into a recurring thing. This cast of characters is TOO GOOD to leave into a one-shot.
I honestly kind of wished Campaign 3 would be the Darrington Brigade. It would have been great. I mean they ended up being pretty much fan service for campaign 1 anyway.
@@Noobie2k7 Except if C3 was Darrington Brigade, either Taryon would have to become a MattNPC, or we'd have to accept that Sam's character would've been about 12 levels above the rest of the party since session 1.
@@GregJonson this is taryon though, Sam could have had them do the fighting and such while he sits back, sips a drink and has the team handle small fries
Last live show the crowd sang along on their own so this time they upgraded to opening too Karaoke so that even more could sing along! It's a great example of of them being Reactionary to what the fans seem to like. They will probably upload the Karaoke version on it's own soon if we are lucky!
I swear to god, someone asks Liam to make a new character and he immediately goes: "Alright so they're going to have a best friend they can't be away from, a fluid sexuality of indeterminate label, and terrible mental health".
@@samuelpaulson7433 I started that episode in podcast form and there were a few moments I thought this guy kinda sounded like Napolean but nah no way. Then I switched to the vod and had my mind blown lol
I don't know if Marisha gets enough recognition. Her character and the amount of work she put into all of it was amazing. The way she pronounced certain words was also hilarious.
@@egoraptorschin9412 I found Keyleth and Beau both to be fucking obnoxious. She somehow managed to play less fucking annoying this time! By the end of campaign one Travis openly laughs at her misfortune at every turn because he is so tired of her being annoying.
@@true_plays_games imagine seeing a friend enjoy their friend's antics and thinking it's exasperated... they frequently laughed at keyleth's stuff together. all these little moments of getting the other's attention to crack them up, to the point where they sat next to each other in the next game.
@@XoIoRouge that would be amazing lol we know liam could pull it off. "Alright, Buddy let's start slow. What is the first letter of ze alphabet?" "... You're prETTYYYYY." "...Thank you?.."
@@Aetheria60 Buddy the Ogre constantly comes in clutch throughout the whole campaign, captures the hearts of everyone in the crowd, and already knows that friendship is the greatest treasure and ally of all. His INT ought to be 20
@@kaitlynwickham6237 They fill the same role in the group dynamic, but I feel like Buddy is way more innocent than Grog in a lot of ways. Like how he calls everyone and everything pretty. Grog was also kind of innocent, but whereas Buddy is a full on Saint Bernard, Grog is more of a very loyal Rottweiler with a soft spot.
@@SPACEHARICE Oathbreaker/Hexblade Padlock is better. You can Attack with Charisma, get a damage bonus equal to your Charisma Modifier, get Hexblade's Curse, and you can use a smite spell, Eldritch Smite, and Divine Smite on the same attack. With your nice high warlock spell slots
Travis's face when he realized Talisen is playing a Barbarian is so damn adorable and wholesome 🥺 ( I would watch all these characters in an actual campaign )
I’m convinced that Travis is the biggest Critical Role fan there is. The joy and exuberance he has when his friends do something interesting or funny is great.
He's semi avian, claw hooting mammal of action He's a furry half owl with a prety big brain! He's got more than just man skills He's got an owl's beak and gives criminals chills And the ducks all swoon whenever they hear him say: "Hoo!" He's the Owlbear! Owlbear and Darrington!
There are no words that describe how much I love this. You deserve bonus points for nostalgia you absolute genius. How quick did it take you to come up with this?
I was crying too, because Buddy was a real live nice-guy, and it broke the hearts of others seeing his pain. Marisha as Hazel felt the guilt big-time when she realizes this.
Oh that would be so interesting if fjord were related to Lionel, he was one of my favorite guest player characters of campaign one. Could totally be possible given that Lionel was an orphan too who was raised by ducks lol 😂
@@FigurativeCritter Lionel actually was a duck that was true polymorphed by scanlan and his memory modified heavily. Never confirmed, but heavily implied
Taliesin had a most epic pun in Campaign 1, early on, about stuffing dead bodies into the loo "where they should be... _interred._ " Only Ashley even noticed. I was dying. CR barely reacted.
@@bigdream_dreambig Yeah, no worries. Just a really, epically Dad-Tier pun: the bodies should be interred in the loo/toilet. Interred (buried) in turd. As I said, it's some Dad-Tier stuff. Terrible? Wonderful? I want to say it was right around or in the same ep as Scanlan shitting on the bed somewhere...? He delivered it with that Percy drawl, totally straight-faced, but with just enough emphasis that you know that he meant it to be deliberate. For whatever reason, I was just slain with laughter.
1:48:34 Doty being salty at Hazel is my favourite thing so far. 1:49:35 I love how Doty (or rather Matt) can throw shade with single, completely neutral word.
I still have the idea of a bard using motivational speeches in the back of my head as a quirky character. It's untested, but it might come close, at least in being annoying af.
I've always wanted to see a bard with a Hurdy-Gurdy, an Aquaphone, or a Theremin... But I think a Glass Harmonica would genuinely be impossible even if the bard was strong enough to carry it around and it was made from a very expensive type of glass.
The owlbear: "Ohhh? You're approaching me? Instead of running away you're coming right to me?" Farriwen: "I cant beat the shit out of you without getting closer." The owlbear: "Oh ho! Well then come as close as you li~" * *stunned* * Farriwen: ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA!
you don't understand how BADLY i need ashley to play a character like this in campaign 3. don't get me wrong, i love yasha so much, but ashley playing a confident character just hits different
Agreed! Yasha fits because Ashley (bless her soul) barely knew what was happening for over half the campaign. So her uncertainty fit. I love Damien. So refreshing.
Yes, I also look forward to a confident Ashley character. Pike and Yasha are so limited compared to the other characters because she had to leave so often. She's also going to be more confident playing when she's playing every week and used to her abilities as opposed to playing catchup all the time.
I am impressed with the audience at the “now it's your turn!! (your turn!! (your turn!!))” the audience split up into parts and successfully harmonized and I am very happy!!!! The vox masheena and keeleeth aren't her accent, they're because Hazel has only read those names in a book, not heard them pronounced. At least that was my understanding. Like Matt in real life with the word "sigil", it's something that happens when people learned words through books and didn't check a pronunciation guide. So it's a subtle bit of character backstory building. The rest are presumably what an old-timye Wildye-mount accent sounds like in-world. :P Or at this point, the *start* of that accent among reporters and so on. So not old-timey for them, this is accent trend is starting now, and she's starting it.
@@DarkShines86 Yes, that's the out-of-universe reference Marisha is going for, which is why it's so funny to us. But Exandria doesn't have voice-based media at all, other than town criers and in-person oral storytellers. In-universe, I don't think *Hazel* is doing an impression of a voice she's heard a group of people use; she's a pioneer. Maybe she heard someone or some group talk like that, maybe she made it up herself as an affectation for her recordings.
Grog and Pike weren't pairs it was Scanlan and Pike I know they couldn't do it without Tary being in the fights but not everyone had a partner at the end of campaign 1
I'm new to this critters thing and are just close to finishing Campain 1, so I haven't really encountered this theme song, but hearing the audience sing along made me cry, too!
I feel like it’s less a rivalry and more just an extreme animosity that Doty has towards Hazel that, to Hazel’s credit , is not reciprocated. And I’m here for every single second of it!
@@tai-imyr849 Hazel too sure of herself and Taryon's vanity to feel any rivalry. She knows that man is gonna love her invention. She seems to have figured out that his books are exaggerated and misleading to paint Taryon in a better light, seeing as she did that exact thing for him unprompted.
What makes it better is that Sam/Tarry mentions he's Doty 5.0 ...Doty 5.0 has emotion! Jealousy mostly, but I think he mentioned 4.0 tried to kill them. It may have been unintentional, but it works out for cannon :D
Taliesen's character was fucking awsome...He delivered some of the funniest lines I've heard in any show in a long time "justice is my religion" "I hide"....damn I was laughing at those two lines for over an hour...just watching them over and over.
*My portrayal of what happened:* >> Travis goes to airport >> Is worried he doesn't have a character name and the show is TOMORROW >> Enjoying himself some airport Mac and cheese >> Has legs propped on Samsonite luggage >> Looks and Mac and cheese >> Notices bag tag >> !!!!!! >> "MACARONI SAMSONITE!"
I guess that Travis' trademark is tupid names by now... Grog the alcoholic, Fjord the Southerner, his cat in Cuthulhu being "Achoo" (he's allergic to cats) amd now this.
@Manuel Sacha a german accent is relatively easy to keep up for liam and theres a good reason sam dropped nott's terrible irish accent by the 10th episode and just kept the slightly more feminine voice
@Manuel Sacha Keep in mind that these are professional voice actors, and the muscles that control your voice can get stronger like any others. They can push their voices further than the average person before hurting themselves. There's a video of the guy who voices Fiddlesticks in LoL where he explains his methods for doing crazy voices.

I think these characters are perfect for live shows. They are not as serious of a group and the cast can relax and play up the comedy more for the audience, than they can with their main characters since much more is at stake in the real campaign.
Live shows should only be one-shots (IMO).

Loved Marisha's character 🖤
The vox masheena and keeleeth aren't her accent, they're because Hazel has only read those names in a book, not heard them pronounced. At least that was my understanding. Like Matt in real life with the word "sigil", it's something that happens when people learned words through books and didn't check a pronunciation guide. So it's a subtle bit of character backstory building.
The rest are presumably what an old-timye Wildye-mount accent sounds like in-world. :P Or at this point, the *start* of that accent among reporters and so on. So not old-timey for them, this is accent trend is starting now, and she's starting it.
@@Peter_Cordes she’s just doing an old timey news reporter impersonation
@@DarkShines86 Yes, that's the out-of-universe reference Marisha is going for, which is why it's so funny to us.
But Exandria doesn't have voice-based media at all, other than town criers and in-person oral storytellers. In-universe, I don't think *Hazel* is doing an impression of a voice she's heard a group of people use; she's a pioneer. Maybe she heard someone or some group talk like that, maybe she made it up herself as an affectation for her recordings.
Marisha's prep work for her bard was AMAZING! It was like a Sam ad.
Pretty sure Marisha went in with the singular goal of out-samming Sam.
Better than.
Would have wished she did something special for her bardic inspiration like Sam does. Scanlan is still the better bard in my opinion.
Its great realizing that the pairs from campaign ones players were the ones who had to dual one another as their new characters.
The Dwarf huh. Didn’t notice that until you mentioned it. As always with Sam stirring the shit as it went.
Grog and Pike weren't pairs it was Scanlan and Pike I know they couldn't do it without Tary being in the fights but not everyone had a partner at the end of campaign 1

The rivalry between Doty and Hazel is everything that I ever needed in my life.
What makes it better is that Sam/Tarry mentions he's Doty 5.0

@Manuel Sacha a german accent is relatively easy to keep up for liam and theres a good reason sam dropped nott's terrible irish accent by the 10th episode and just kept the slightly more feminine voice
@Manuel Sacha iirc, sam said on talks once that nott's falsetto is actually relatively easy to maintain
