@@richdunn9774yeah, but in the interview after the round he said he came up with the shot. He maybe forgot, or didnt really hear. Simon isnt and has never been the guy to not give credit to others, but alot of peoppw had that "idea" independently.
Simon was the last to throw on this final day lead card. It couldn’t have been any more favorable to this genius strategy. He was the last possible person to tee off on this hole in the tournament.
My dad swears by the fact that this is a “dirty” play which ruins the integrity of the game, or whatever. I believe it is one of the smartest and ballsiest shots ever thrown in the sports history.
The rules or it was against you know the integrity of the game but I still took one heck of a shot to land in slight OB versus going long or burying it and what looks like a really crappy rough.
@@lucasfjellberg6903 really difficult birdie. But it's an easy par if he throws it up and over and out of bounds. He was up by some strokes too I believe.
@@lucasfjellberg6903 The hole was pretty poorly designed. The birdie was tough (which is absolutely okay), and pretty random (which is a lot less okay). But more importantly, any kind of attempt at a conventional lay-up involved the same risks the birdie did. Basically, you had no choice but a birdie/bogey coinflip, until Simon figured this gem out.
I think this might be my favorite play of 2023… because you have to have BALLS OF STEEL for that. And on top of the great and slightly mad idea to throw it like this… it’s not even an easy shot! Balls of steel people! 👏
Unlike many holes, where if you go OB from the tee, you have to re-tee, or go to a drop zone, on this hole, it played from wherever it last crossed the OB line. Everyone kept bogeying because they were trying to keep it in bounds the whole way. Simon just threw straight at the OB line behind the basket, hit it, and had a putt from a few feet for par. Gained a stroke on the whole card.
The most important thing was that if you didn't cross inbounds over the island, which was happening A LOT, then players went to a difficult drop zone and usually ended up with a bogey. By crossing inbounds before going OB, Simon was able to play from where it went back OB, which gave him a significantly easier shot to save his par than the other players who didn't cross inbounds at all. It was still extremely skillful because Simon had to have the power and accuracy to clear those treetops and then cross back OB in a place that would give him a better putt than the drop zone... But this hole had been racking up bogeys for players throughout the tournament because playing for the island, as intended, was extremely difficult. Simon just broke the hole.
Gotta wonder what else it's going to take for coarse designer's and pdga rule makers to listen to Simon when he has opinions about how to improve the sport....
This year they changed the rules at the Portland open by adding a bunch of new mondos. Just because players like Simon and Eagle could play the course completely different than the event organizers wanted. Probably do the same next year for this event.
When you go out of bounds your next shot will be from the last place your disc was in bounds. He threw the disc in a way that it went out of bounds pretty close to the basket so his next shot was an easy putt.
This was playing as the hardest hole for the tournament. A lot of people had been going ob way short of the green and getting bogey. Eagle McMahon had just done that (Eagle was a stroke behind Simon at the time). Knowing Eagle was going to get a bogey, Simon intentionally threw long over the green, knowing that where he went out would be where his next shot came from. Where he went out left him just a 30-35 foot par putt, which he made.
@shawnmessman1897 okay. That's what I assumed. So everyone else tried firing down the tunnel under the tree canopy, and he just went over instead, allowing for a greater range on the intialt throw right?
@@shawnmessman1897I get it completely. Sometimes it is better to just play it where it lies, or at least straight out of OB, especially if you increase your chance of a par while everyone else bogeyed.
This island hole was the hardest hole on the course. Everyone was missing the island short and taking bogey or worse. Simon intentionally overthrew the island so he could take is lie at the back of the green, about 10' from the basket to secure par.
Somebody should sit down with the tds and course designers before tournaments to prevent stupid obs or ideas like stroke and distance. If essentially not playing a hole scores better than the average, you should go back to the drawing board.
The hole was an island home that was hard and Simon only needed a par. Throw it deep so it crosses inbounds right behind the basket for an easy tap in for par. Everyone else needed a birdie.
Tons of OB make this hole hard for pros. He threw above the basket OB long so he took it where it went OB, right by the basket and took a easy par, other pros like Eagle took a bogey.
He did the same thing on 17 at Wickham Park at the Greater Hartford Disc Golf Open all 3 days. Made a tricky par 3 easy the OB from the back was inside the circle.
I had thought about this scenario or a variation of it for years, never thought id see it because how would one even design a hole with this loophole? You couldnt hardly intentionally design a hole with this mistake. Amazing.
The OB (out of bounds) area was very tight on this hole. In other words, there wasn’t a very large space for your disc to land that wouldn’t result in a penalty stroke. On most island holes like this one, if a player goes out of bounds, they must take their next shot from a drop zone which would almost guarantee a bogey. On this hole, however, the ruling states that if your disc crosses in bounds during the flight but lands out of bounds, you will take your next shot where the disc crossed out of bounds. Simon knew this rule and took advantage of it. If you look at the drone shot shown in the video, you can see the basket is only about 10 feet away from the OB line. His competitor (Eagle McMahon) had just thrown his disc OB and had pretty much a guaranteed bogey. So Simon decided to throw his disc as far as he could right over the basket which would, although he was OB, leave him a 10 foot putt that he made for par.
His closest competitor went out of bounds short, leaving him well out of range to make 3. So Simon chooses to throw over everything in an effort to cross out of bounds right behind the basket. His spot is marked from the last point he crossed in bounds which happened to be only 12 feet behind the basket. So he taps in for a 3, which gains him a stroke on his competitor. My dad swears by the fact that this is a “dirty” play which ruins the integrity of the game, or whatever. I believe it is one of the smartest and ballsiest shots ever thrown in the sports history.
Simon is winning and needs to not take a bogeyand par is fine. This tee shot is entirely out of bounds until it reaches the green. If you end up out of bounds short, you have to go to a drop zone that is a garunteed bogey. If you cross in bounds then go out of bounds, you get to take it where the disc crossed from in bounds to out of bounds instead of having to go to the dz. By launching it high over everything he crossed in bounds before going out of bounds right behind the basket for a garunteed drop in par without bring the bogey into play.

This is why stroke and distance needs to be the rule for all O.B.
What does “stroke and distance” mean? Like re-throw from the tee with an added penalty stroke?
Yes,, that what it means. It puts teeth in the concept of O.B. Otherwise, they are just playing it as a hazard imo. PGA golf has it right.@@salommy
