Seems like the only way forward will be active cables or fiber optics. In the short term, it sounds like they plan to have active DP 2.1 cables toward the end of the year.
The biggest problem is that no one really makes a copper cable that can handle 80 Gbit/second. I don't think 100 Gbit ethernet copper cables even exist at longer than 1 meter. At those speeds, we're pretty much exclusively at optical cables, and that makes stuff far more expensive - not just for the cable, but for the plugs as well.
I'm happy to see monitor specs finally outpacing GPU specs. For some reason displays are like power supplies to me where I only upgrade them every 5 years.
Display tech and PSU tech are honestly just two things that just don't improve at as fast a rate as everything else, so there's less reason to buy the newest one
I just found a 3 meter "VESA Certified" DP80 cable on Amazon. Low number of reviews, but they look favorable. VESA Certified 10FT Displayport Cable 2.1,16K DP Cable [16K@60Hz,8K@120Hz,4K@240Hz 165Hz], 80Gbps DP 2.1 Cable Compatible FreeSync G-Sync HDR10 HDCP 3D DSC 1.2a Gaming Monitor,TV,PC
@@klakiti02 Certainly a fake. If it's actually a certified cable it'll be listed on the VESA website in the specified length. Reviews are definitely not trustworthy, given that exactly one monitor and zero consumer GPUs actually support UHBR20. Edit: Just double checked, and the longest actually certified cables are still 1.2m
@@klakiti02There are currently no cables certified for DP80 that long, so - shocking! - that listing is BS. You'll need active cables to reach even 2m, let alone 3.
It's insane though. It's not even about having your PC close to your monitor but if your monitor is big enough, you have to have it on the correct side of your monitor too or else it won't reach
My favorite part of these new QD-OLED showings, is every video links to a site that doesn't have it in stock. That's because nowhere has it in stock. Dozens of videos on monitors you can't buy.
I can't choose right now between this Gigabyte or Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM or MSI MPG 321URX QD-OLED. Is there any video comparing them side by side, especially HDR? Cause for some monitors it's only applied on the box but in reality when you turn on HDR nothing happens.
That's the kind of stuff that's done for low end LCDs, typically things rated for HDR400, that don't even have any kind of backlight control - they just know how to decode a HDR signal, but don't have the hardware to do anything with it. None of this is relevant for a high end monitor, especially an OLED one. Now, Windows isn't the best at handling HDR on a system level, but for any of these monitors there'll be a major difference in any HDR-enabled application or game. If you want more in depth data, look at HWUB/Monitors Unboxed or Rtings, they both do in depth testing of HDR functionality.
On the 18W thing: I've daily driven the M32U since it came out. I use the monitor with a 3080 for gaming and a Mac for working. When I'm using a M1 Pro MacBook, 18W is perfectly sufficient, especially when the lid is closed. I believe many folks are like me, using the windows machine for personal stuff like gaming and web browsing, and a low power laptop like a MacBook or the ultrabooks, which makes the 18W part not that annoying.
I like when reviewers actually test the features that set all these monitors apart instead of just mentioning them like an advert. Tthe KVM, the smaller screen button, VRR flicker.... But to each their own.
When you have a bit of slack on your cables (not here, I know) it is comfortable to tilt the screen towards portrait to connect everything. Also. It's nice that the stand can do portrait in the off chance that you mount the screen on another stand and you give this one to your little sibling or your SO for their setup.
at last! been waiting for 2 years for these specs (Now I'm watching the video to find that ONE thing that ever monitor has to make you go, NOPE!). We'll see.
Plot twist: the thing that makes you go "nope" isn't with the monitor, but the fact that DP80 will require hyper-expensive active cabling for any useful cable length (longest certified currently is 1.2m, will likely never exceed 1.5m for passive cables). And given that DSC isn't visible in any way, there's zero real world benefit to going without. Paying $100+ for a usable display cable, and the only difference it makes is to increase your power consumption a bit? No thanks!

Another great video Plouffe, thanks for doing this focus on monitors for us! Almost feels like time to upgrade from my Asus PG329Q, Dope flannel by the way, brand?
I'd love a direct comparison video between some of these ~$1300 monitors and MSI's $1000. There never seems to be more than 1 thing (maybe) different, but that price gap is crazy.
I think the msi doesn't have uhbr20, regardless, there are others like lg and Samsung that have good brand new models for interesting prices. But, personal opinion, 4k 240hz is totally useless. Only way to achieve that even with a future 5090 is going full dlss frame gen, which also means enabling Nvidia and co. to push on prices even further.

I am currently using a 4K 60Hz 28" monitor (massive downgrade), so look forward to getting myself an FO32U2P! The 240Hz will be remarkable vs this 60Hz I'm using now. Thanks for this review! 😊
Suggestion for highlighting results 11:00 - while the dot was OK, would be better if it was a yellow underline or yellow box when highlighting figures.
What's that video you use for HDR?
I'm watching this while I unbox and set up my two 27" 1440p monitors 🤣
I'm currently shopping for a monitor and looking to make a decision when Prime Day rolls around. Thank you for the review, I have added this display to the contenders that I would be ok making a decision on. The other display I'm very interested in is the Alienware AW2725DF. I'm on a full AMD machine (7800X3D/7900XT/64GBDDR5-6000)
Use portrait to plug everything in
Plouffe tries not to upgrade his monitor every 6 months challenge. Difficulty: impossible 😂
Btw, I've had the same AOC 2460PG since 2017, so chill out Plouffy boy.
How long is the included cables actually? 1m?
Wow, what a great feature on the press of one button. I turn my 32-inch qd-oled 24 inch to practice for esport . Just buy a cheap 1080 24inch 400hz rate
This guy gives leniency to high end product but nitpick every budget product. Way to go Plouffe.
the link for the product isnt working
Only AMD cards support DP 2.1 at the moment, just so people know. I used to use the vertical option for Pinball-games, so there you go Plouffe!
Man it's kinda wild how much data we're blastiing between gpus and monitors these days, I legitimately thought that at some point technology for transmitting more data faster would plateau and we'd just be stuck there, but we sure aren't there yet are we
Didn't think I'd live to see the day Unboxed Theraphy does a ShortCircuit episode. 🤣❤
Hmm, does this mean that we'll start to see motherboards and chassis with the GPU slot at the top, or chassis that are flipped 90 degrees, to put the ports at the top? :p
What's the benefit of DP 2.1 when there is no visual loss by using DSC....
Access to Nvidia features that are locked when using DSC, shorter alt tab times between full screen apps, ability to daisy chain monitors.
@@George-um2vc Which Nvidia features?
@@cask-uk DSR, DLDSR, more I think but those are the ones that I know of coz I use them.
I wish there would be more non OLED 32 inch 4K monitors, I'm simply not gonna run OLED with how long i run my monitors. Last "upgrade" was 10 years ago. Not gonna deal with burn-in
Can we have more 1440p monitor test please?
Would the monitor use ubhr 13.5 or automatically switch to uhbr 10?
It's ok Plouffe all you gotta do is get Linus to sign your old monitor and sell it for profit then you can buy this one. lol
Can't wait for the video where they try to find Wich monitor uses dp at 80gb vs one that uses dp with compression xD
6:09 flick that bean!
This is at least the 5th time I have said this on a LTT video but it obviously hasn't sunken in yet-PORTRAIT MODE IS FOR PLAYING ZACCARIA PINBALL!!!! Combined with a controller, Zaccaria Pinball in portrait mode on a 32 inch high resolution monitor is the closest you can get to a real machine.
I noticed the QD panels look magenta while the W's are pitch black.
I'm actually interested now, because Plouffe said it, and I haven't had my desk against a wall in years: what percentage of people just have their PC on a desk, and their desk against the wall?
My first thought was how are you going to supply it with DP2.1 signal... It's too early to be hyped for this feature and overpay for it.
Another great video Plouffe, thanks for doing this focus on monitors for us! Almost feels like time to upgrade from my Asus PG329Q,
Dope flannel by the way, brand?
No DSC should mean slightly lower latency (no compression/decompression). The difference in appearance is supposed to be imperceptible.
LOL at usage time. Yeah, read the fine print of your warranty!
6:47 Except it's NOT nVidias problem, it's the card owners problem since nVidia decided to cheap out on the ports.
in a year this monitor is 50% cheaper if not cheaper than that.. keep holding guys!
Thought techtone made an appearance
I'd love a direct comparison video between some of these ~$1300 monitors and MSI's $1000. There never seems to be more than 1 thing (maybe) different, but that price gap is crazy.
I think the msi doesn't have uhbr20, regardless, there are others like lg and Samsung that have good brand new models for interesting prices.
But, personal opinion, 4k 240hz is totally useless.
Only way to achieve that even with a future 5090 is going full dlss frame gen, which also means enabling Nvidia and co. to push on prices even further.
That might just be me, but where I live at least the FO32U2P is cheaper than both the MSI and ASUS model, and at that price, I think it's perfect.
Plouffe the goat
great product review, fyi the other model did come with peel protector now too
