  • An unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund pushes a young couple's relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement. Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan, and Rich Sommer star in this psychotically dysfunctional look at a dissolving relationship. Fair Play premiered at Sundance in 2023 and is now on the Netflix platform. Should Fair Play have a place on your watchlist? Thanks for checking out my Fair Play (2023) Netflix Movie Review!

    If I was the guy, I would’ve switched firms. The guy was more in love with the corporation than his fiancé. The guy had everything a guy could want in a gf and he threw it away.
    But I get how he got bothered by the boss wanting to meet with her at a bar at 2am. That’s just sus.

      Yeah!
      What I loved about this movie was tone and tension.
      It felt like a thriller, but with surmounting stress in place of increasing fear as the thickening ingredient that was bound to break the characters before our eyes.
      A... financial thriller?
      A... stress suspense?
      I don't quite know what to call it, but that's what it felt to me, hope this makes sense.

    I think this movie wants you to root for the girl. The guy is predictable in how he let his ego consume him. He tried to be happy for the girl for about 5 seconds, but his fragile ego just couldn’t take it for long. Being continuously stepped upon by the bosses at work didn’t help either. Notice that everytime his skill is questioned, he goes off into tangent. He leads with his emotions which is seen in how he makes recommendations at work. Now the girl is his exact opposite. In the beginning when the guy proposed, you can see her hesitation. She’s already thinking about the ramifications but she chose to ignore it and tried to follow her feelings. That’s why I can say that the story would want you to root for her because she was really trying to be the subservient one despite the fact that she was going against her nature. She leads with her mind, which you can see with how ruthless she was with the guy in the end. Both of them are unable to find a healthy balance and neither are more morally superior than the other.
    I think this was a good movie. Filled with insights about our nature and natural inclinations.

    • @fran-bm6zp
      @fran-bm6zp 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      It's not our "nature" to be subservient. Women are conditioned to be, socially, since children. Times are changing sure, but not completely.

    • @edisonlima4647
      @edisonlima4647 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      Agree, but I don't thing it is as clear cut as that, though. Yes, he is awful and what he does is far worse, but, on a narrative level...
      As she tries to become "one of the guys" in such a chauvinistic environment, she does act quite horribly at times and I think we ARE meant to see it as awful that she so nonchalantly jokes about demanding sexual favors in exchange for keeping his job, when we know that kinda IS what is happening and pressuring him into having sex with her when he openly stated he wasn't in the mood that day - going as far as aggresively mount him and verbally demean him as he asked her to stop until he gives up and tries to please her.
      That was pretty clearly meant to make us think about what if the genders were reversed.
      Even at the end, when she goes through the trouble of lying about him being a stranger obsessed with her, her boss just waves it as "eh, we all sexually assault our underlings and have problematic affairs with people who work for us, just let HR invent some story and he will never work again."
      Which, sure, HE was the a.h. but the boss didn't care about that, the system is not shown to be about who is right, but about who has more power.
      I think her face after that conversation kinda shows that she finally got that. That she now "is" one of the guys and that, boy, she felt dirty for that.
      So while, yes, she is the one we are meant to empathize the most and he is awful, her actions are more than once shown as the whole system being dirty and messed up and as nobody getting out clean when playing this game "well", be them male or female.

    I didn't expect "Fair Play" to be a good movie because it's a small film with not-so-famous actors, but it captivated me from start to finish. The storyline is really good, although I didn't like the ending, and the two main characters are impressive, but the standout character for me in the movie was Campbell, played by Eddie Marsan, who did an excellent job. Like it.

    Felt like there was no message behind it, just watching a relationship go from bad to worse. Wasn't sure who to root for until the end when I realized he was the bad guy and she was the good guy. The whole movie neither character seemed super likeable and the weird tension throughout led to a strange and disappointing buildup that felt more like a weird revenge fantasy then an actual payoff to the building tension we sat through for two hours. The relationship fell apart and that's like the whole story.... What was the point of watching it all?

    • @brettervonkanada6102
      @brettervonkanada6102 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Not every movie deliveres the message as a parable, and there doesn't even have to be a message at all. There's no "good and bad guys". Yes she has some moral superiority but both characters are very relatable. Movie illustrates the reality of the corporate world and the stress that comes with it. It's a decent thriller, not very good but not bad at all, it does what a thriller is supposed to do. If you don't see a point in watching a movie where there are no clear cut heroes and vilains and it doesn't end with a sunset, then this genre is not for you. I suggest watching Marvel movies...

      If it took you the whole movie to realize he was the antagonist, either you aren't too quick or you were distracted, and had it playing in the background. 15 mins in and I knew exactly where this was going

    • @theexotic2983
      @theexotic2983 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Its a terrible movie unless the point of it was to annoy the audience and rile each gender against the other. There was no grace, growth or generosity from either of the two. At the end of the day it's obvious they never really loved each other because love is transcendent it doesn't humiliate or debase. I think the lesson is relationships based on pursuit of only Pleasure and power are bound to self destruct.

    The film is a great example of hypergamy. Men are more attractive the more successful they are and become but it doesn't work the other way round. Successful, career minded women are not appealing to the vast majority of men.

      I think it’s what one is willing to sacrifice for it. A woman could be with a financially successful man even if he’s not a good/present husband or father. And a man could be with a financially successful woman but not if she a bad or absentee wife or mother.

    I could have enjoyed this movie if Luke had been even slightly competent at his job and there was an actual competition for the career path....BUT from the opening scene where she spews vagina blood all over his face you just know his charcter is written to lose and is going to get increasingly more weak and pathetic as the movie goes on and its no surpise at the end where she kicks his ass in a knife fight and he pathetically pleads for his life. There I saved you two hours

    This movie should have been done with more nuance. But the director herself wanted to explore toxic masculinity. So the actions of the male leads are out of bounds with reality in my opinion. I mean, the sister college story at the strip club sounds like something people think toxic "frat bros" would talk about. Not to mention the "dumb fu&king b*tch" comment from the boss. Don't get me started on the fiance. Examining what it feels like to watch your partner get everything you wanted could have been interesting if not done with a certain message to send.

    What I loved was that this was a drama filmed, paced, toned, lighted, colored and scored as a thriller!
    In a sense, it *is* a thriller in which the director substituted crushing levels of professional and personal stress, with no possible respite or escape for even a second for the usual fear with no respite or escape as the cause behind the sense impending doom.
    Maybe that's why the predictability of most of the story didn't felt bad, because the dread accumulated by knowing how the "little" things (his falling into red pill courses on making people believe your lies, her being incapable of telling him that they wanted him fired from day one because he was imposed into the firm by investors, his demeaning her professional wardrobe, her failing to stand to her mother...) would, in the contemporary world we know so well, clash catastrophically. Though I couldn't predict just HOW cruel and ugly it would turn out.

      @@abbieC88 She told him, "Do what you want to do to me", then she started the sexual encounter, turned around, and pulled her panties down for him to do it. She seemed to be very much so into this rough sex as if she wanted it like this. So it's stupid as you don't act like you want sex this way then suddenly don't. She was saying one thing with her actions and another thing with her words, which her words were also was quite ambiguous (Do what you want, stop?). The entire scene was absurdly stupid from both parties. But from her own actions it's stupid that the "appropriate revenge" was stabbing him and cutting him. She ends up being not much better as her terrible behavior spurred a lot of the resentment in the relationship. Going out to a strip club with other guys, coming home drunk, and then he's suppose to be OK with that? So much bad behavior in this film, neither side was treating the other with respect and love.
