I am soooo glad with your tips, I used your taping & sealing technique when painting an accent wall in a room with fiberglass wallpaper, which is structured wallpaper. It worked amazingly well, I have never painted such a clean edge in my life! Thank you! :)

Do most houses in the US have textured walls Dave ? Most are smooth plaster or plasterboard ( drywall ) here in the UK.

In my experience, some (maybe half?) of new construction, and (most) higher-end homes have smooth walls. Texture (mainly Orange Peel and sometimes Knockdown) is usually used in scenarios where the builder or general contractor is trying to save money. Texture also seemed to be a popular look in the '80's and '90's.

What tape are you using? Will normal making tape work. I'm doing two different colours on one wall was going to use frog tape. Thanks

I would not recommend normal masking tape because it is too sticky. I use what's called a low adhesion tape (specifically, I use 3M's Delicate Surface tape (2080)). If you are going to use Frog Tape, I would use the yellow type (it's a low adhesion). The green Frog Tape is a medium adhesion. The issue with medium and high adhesion tapes is that they may pull off the paint you are taping to.
      Thanks!
