Using A Dark Interior Trim Color
Here is a project I painted where the windows and exterior leading doors were painted a darker color. The darker color tends to enhance or frame the outside making the outdoors more noticeable. The rest of the trim was done in white which makes for a very cool look.

Quick Painting Hack: Protecting Your Paint Pan Between Coats
May I ask which dark paint color you used?
Thank you so much!Happy to find your tip :)
Would this be true for painting a light grey color over black walls? We will be using a quality paint just not sure if black is still too dark to cover or not.
I always wondered who in the world would ever need an 18v caulking gun. I was using polyurethane caulking for a small project. Oh my God. That stuff is hard to get out of the tube, you have to squeeze so hard, so much so that I am now looking for an 18v caulking gun.
This information is woefully inadequate. Water based paints aren't latex. There are no shortages of examples of water based paints which are not latex.
Supposed to pull the tape while the paint is wet
Can you leave it on for multiple coats? I was gonna prime and paint since I’m painting stained wood. I was going to spray the windows. Would it be ok to use this liquid mask around the edge and then tape paper or plastic to it to cover the middle?
Yes, you can leave it on for the primer and the finish coats; no need to remove until done. You could use the Liquid Mask around the edge and tape the middle. A couple of things though: if you tape to the liquid mask, I would test how strong the bond is between the tape and the Liquid Mask. If you are going to spray and the tape bond is not good enough, the tape will simply blow off. My guess is masking tape will work best in this scenario. What I would do in this scenario however, is tape up first. Use a medium adhesion tape (don't use "Original" Blue Scotch Tape or masking tape directly on the glass...use Scotch's Edge Lock (2093) or something similar). Mask to the exposed glass area, then when you apply the Liquid Mask make sure you seal the edge of the tape. I'm going to guess that most painting contractors would read this and just say, " simply tape up the whole thing, it will be faster." I never do both, I do one or the other. Smaller windows, Liquid Mask; large windows, tape up. Thanks!
Good video🙏🙏
Thank you!
Best video ever.... You saved me so much time.
Glad it helped!
So if i want to paint decorative lines on my wall i jave to paint over all the tape the colors i want it to stay underneath the tape? Then what just paint the 2nd coat over it , correct
So how long will the unused product last I wonder. I will need to store it between jobs
If you apply the lid back really secure and keep the product in a cool, dry environment (don't let if freeze), it should last about 6 months.
Can I use this on a smoked pane glass mirror with metal frame I want more of an antique white rather than bronze?
It depends on the colours. If the old paint is darker than the new colour, especially if the new colour is white, you want to prime the wall. If you don't, you'll need 3 and possibly 4 coats of top coat, and you will definitely have to cut it in 4 times because the brushed edges are always the thinnest part of the paint job. This is an issue even if the old colour is just a little darker than the new paint. Save yourself the headache and just prime it. If the old paint is the same as the new, or if it's lighter than the new, there is no need to prime.
Thinking about using this on my over my living room windows for privacy. Was going to put colored stick and peel but the brushed effect looks so elegant. I wonder how long it will last / if months later it causes problems removing.
I've had it on interior windows for as long as 3 months. We actually applied it early in the process for a bit of privacy. It dries clear and if you apply it thick enough, it helps a bit; makes everything look wavey.
What About Washing and Sanding The Wall That Is Already Painted. Or Just A Light Sand To Knock Off Stuff Stuck To It.
Yes to both. If the walls have residue on them, then cleaning it is required so the final coat will have a better bond. TSP or a TSP substitute would work well as it will also etch the old paint a bit. As for sanding, yes, sometimes the existing coat can feel rough, like there was something in the old paint or the original drywall was not sanded down properly, after priming. I'd try using a finer grit, say 220 or 180. If that is not working well move to 150. You need to be careful about using too rough of a sandpaper as it will cut small grooves in the paint which may show when you apply the final coat (100, 80, 60 grit would not be recommended). thanks!
You Sound Real Honest.
Why Google take me to this video when I asked "should you prime before using the same color" and I think I wanted me to change but I want to know about same color
Fantastic job and very well explained! Thank you for sharing it with us!!👍
Thank you for this. This is easily the best method I have seen on youtube. No boiling on the stove, no hard chemicals. Just let it soak and even the 50 years old oil paint could be removed easily.
Have you heard of Ellen Kennon Full Spectrum Paints, if so do you recommend?
Most efficient video ever, thanks for not including life story, origins of paint job and much more before getting to the point 😅
Thanks
I've painted thousands of windows and paint will remove from windows using a razor blade just as easy as without this product. Paint the grids then simply score the paint next to the grid (just like in the video) and then run your "sharp" blade (also pointed out in the video) along the grid and it will come off. It will take seconds longer but you get the same results less the time of applying the product and the extra cost of the product. What was conveniently "not" pointed out in the video was do not apply the product to the painted surface as was done in the video. You must take time to be neat and avoid doing so or the paint will not properly adhere to the painted area just as it does not adhere to the glass which is the whole purpose of the product, "prevent paint from adhering". This will further increase your time spent.
that stuff is amazing
It’s a boring fact that there’s no such thing as a magic shortcut. Sealing the tape with paint is the only reliable method as you showed. 👍🏻
My ceiling has texture, we paint two times with the roll and ending up with the brush because the paint didn't cover all the little spaces of the texture and I was able to see the old paint through. Very extenuating job. Are there any tips to paint a ceiling with texture?
love the commitment!
Thanks!
Omg found this in the nick of time. Brilliant
Thanks!
I fail to see why this is any easier than blue tape, or for that matter, razor blading. #useless gimmick
In my experience, the taping is about the same amount of time as Liquid Mask, maybe even slower if you are using paper or plastic. I really don't understand the scraping of the paint off the glass. A really decent paint will be hard to scrape off, so I do not see the benefit of simply scraping the paint off as it's more time consuming. There are always a number of ways to do something, Liquid Mask is just one. Thanks for the feedback.
@@DaveMartin It's an age old debate. The first time I saw a painter slopping paint on the glass and then taking a razor blade to brand new (and very expensive) Andersen or Quaker windows, I about had a cow 😠. But when I saw the result, I was relieved. Thankfully, these days, many windows/doors are coming from the factory already masked and ready for painting. However I am still intrigued by the product and will probably try it 👍.
Great guidance, much clearer than other videos I watched. Thanks.
Thank you!
This is what I was looking for. This is a good way to get crisp straight lines. Thank you!
My pleasure!
You mentioned Benjamin More paint I'm from Ireland really difficult to get BM paint here. But I really went out of my way to get it, it has great self levelling properties. I went with the the (hybrid alkyd) Advance white satin for trim. But do you know if it yellows over time? I'm going to hold out painting upstairs (including a dark hall) until I find out more.
Because it is a hybrid alkyd/water mix, yes, it could yellow slightly over time. In my experience, and I have used Advance for years, I have not had this issue. I was at a house where I had painted the trim with Benjamin Moore's Satin Impervo (the pure alkyd paint line) and it has not yellowed at all (I painted it in 2008). Paints are just much better than they were 30 years ago when using an alkyd (oil) would most surely yellow over time. Since the paint is not a purely alkyd paint, the level of yellowing would most likely be very low. Problems with yellowing occur when the paint is not exposed to light (behind a couch, bed, dark closets); but again, I have not noticed these issues unless the house was painted 30 years ago. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it surely not as prevalent these days. If you are really concerned, switch to the Scuff X (use the eggshell finish as it is a bit shinier than other lines). It's a great paint, very durable and is latex (water based). Please let me know if this was helpful, or if you have any other questions. Thanks!
My god! I’ve been losing time for the last 10 years!
;-)
Is spectrum paint good for paving
I don't use a lot of spectrum paints because there are not a lot of those paints around. Benjamin Moore, the paint I use, has a CSP color line which is said to be full spectrum (although they do not technically use all the colors, but use quite a few colors with no black or gray), but I do not use it as I am not a fan of the product these full spectrum colors come in (Aura). As Aura is their best line, it is a pain to work with (I have a video on that here) th-cam.com/video/qW9sZ5AqxB0/w-d-xo.html
Just push the tape straight down with a putty knife flush with the baseboard.
Hi thanks for this. Can the plastic be re used on a different room?
That's problematic. Once the plastic has paint on it and you have taped to it, it's kind of a pain to pull it up carefully and reuse it. The paint you get on the plastic, once dried, will also flake off and can make a mess if you are not careful. If you are just laying plastic over furniture in the middle of the room and not getting too much paint on it, then yes, you could easily reuse it then.
The person remodeling my bathroom used this on my linoleum and after the construction was done it will not come off. Does anyone know how to get it off without damaging the floor?
Ya, that's a problem. For anyone reading this, only use this product on carpet. I'm assuming it's the glue residue that is left behind, or is it the carpet protector itself? Either way, be careful about using Goof Off or the like on the floor as it will dull those finishes. Let me know if you have not had any luck, I will do some research and see if I can find a solution.
@@DaveMartin it was both the film and the adhesive. I could only get off small pieces after hours of trying to get it lose. I have a bad back ( 2 spinal surgeries) and also limited funds so have been working on it a little bit at a time. I’ve tried everything. I probably need to redo the floor but being retired I have limits. I tried a hair dryer recently and it seemed to help. Only time will tell.
Does Taping the wall come out more cleaner then taping the ceiling? I do like using that technique painting ceiling paint first then the color.
I would do which ever works for you, or which ever look you like. My goal here is to show a way to get a straight line. Thanks!
It feels like I found a hidden Jewel of a TH-cam channel!! I love your videos ❤
Thanks!
So it seems you Did paint the wall first or the ceiling?
Tricky question ;-) I painted the ceiling first, but not the edges (where the walls meet the ceiling) I then painted the walls, then taped to the wall, sealed the tape, then painted the ceiling edge.
One of the best resources out there for DIYers. I’ve watched many of the folks on TH-cam, but I get the most from this guy.
Really appreciate that!
You helped me allot, much appreciated
My pleasure!
Can I paint over wooden paneling or should I use primer first
If the wooden paneling has no paint on it, it needs to be primed first. If it is painted and the paint is failing, you would also need to prime it then.
Hi Im Fazio And look forward learning
Hi Dave, please can you tell me the brand and the color you using on the first part i m trying to find a match with my floor and your looks exactly what i m looking for.Much apreciated and btw great work😊
In the first part of the video I used “Dap’s Alex Plus” (color: Cedar Tan), and in the second part for the stairs I used “Big Stretch” (Tan). Thanks!
Between brushing it on then scraping off I think taping is quicker. Also, the green tape is cheaper than the blue.
Are you talking about the green lacquer tape, or the Frog Tape? The green lacquer tape is cheaper, but you need to be careful with it because it will stick too hard to the surface and could, over time, be hard to pull. Unfortunately, purchasing more expensive materials is ideal in decreasing issues down the road. I get that many of you are on a budget and so that becomes problematic. Thanks for the feedback.
Apologies, again, for the noise 🤣🤝
Your voice is calming.
Is that a good thing, or a bad thing ;-)
