The GBA e-Reader version is special to me. It's the first game I ever finished the story of on my own. Sure, it was only 4 stages, but it was challenging to me at 9 years old and not having played arcade platformers like it before. Nowadays, I play the NES port mostly but can honestly say the 7800 port is good as well. Seeing Junior reunite with his dad still brings a tear to my eye :)
The Colecovision only came out 1 year before the NES came out in Japan. So it is no wonder that its version of DKJ is comparable to the NES version. Makes you wonder what would have happened if Coleco had survived the great video game crash. Could the Colecovision have competed with the NES in the 8-bit era?
It survived the video game crash. The Coleco Adam was it's downfall. I don't think the Colecovision could have competed with the NES because the SG-1000 was basically a Colecovision knockoff, but I think a Colecovision successor could have had some competition, it may in fact change the the way of controllers.
Coleco, in 1986 (when the NES started taking off in the US) was already broke. Between the failure of its home computer, the death of the videogame market, and the waning popularity of Cabbage Patch Kids, The Connecticut Leather Company would never have stood a chance against the NES.
Marvin Harrison Smith II, it was mostly because of the Adam. The Coleco was only mildly affected by the crash. I would say, if they spent time making a video game console instead of the Adam, they would have a better chance. More information can be found on Retro Game Living Room’s video.
@@projectwoodcarvingwithstev6734 Possibly, They had established licensing with many of the benchmarks from the arcade early on, the Colecovision had ports of games from Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Taito, Bally/Midway etc... and they were sort of flirting with the concept of console exclusives; they did port a lot of their licensed games to inferior consoles like the 2600 and Intellivision, but didn't to the 5200 which could match it graphically. Atari back then would port their games to all consoles and computers, they didn't really start exclusives until later. Coleco might have gotten a jump on the NES, or given their relationship with Nintendo prior to this, might have even sold the NES in western markets under their brand.
There's also another thing that's really cool in Donkey Kong Junior on the Coleco Adam. They managed to include a 5th level when you input a code at the selection screen. The level is supposed to be a kitchen at Mario's hideout, where Mario tries to drop pans of dough on Junior while he navigates through the kitchen. You can even drop fruit on Mario and stun him, which makes the Donkey Kong death sound!
There's also a nice homebrew version released for the C64 by Mr SID in 2014. On the Spectrum version it looks more like Donkey Kong sr is trying to free Houdini from a plump pirate... which is pretty cool actually!
The ZX Spectrum is very weird, including the graphics and color. BBC Micro is less weird, it’s just the music, graphics and color (I said it again). And The NES was my Favorite ❤️
That's because it was using the Atari 2600's sound chip (TIA), which was from 1977. The 7800 was supposed to have a Pokey sound chip, but Jack Tramiel nixed it as a cost-cutting measure. It did allow for cartridges to have an onboard Pokey chip, but only 2 cartridges ever had one: Ballblazer and Commando. Look up a gameplay video of Commando for the Atari 7800 and you'll hear what Atari 7800 games can sound like.
@@MaximRecoil I still can't get over how this retarded decision ruined a pretty decent console that could rival the NES just because a bunch of freaks wanted their shitty 2600 games playable on it.

So: The Nintendo releases besides e-Reader (so arcade, NES, Famicom Disk System) are the best versions, obviously. The Coleco releases look and sound pretty solid, and I actually prefer the Coleco versions of the enemies - they look a lot bigger and more intimidating imo. e-Reader's screen flicker is the e-Reader version's biggest flaw, and honestly, we're probably seeing why e-Reader didn't go anywhere. Atari did alright for the Atari 8-bit family, with quality starting to rival the Coleco versions, though the pallet is kinda grating, though credit where it's due: It seems much more in-character for Wario to be the one kidnapping gorillas. The 7800's quality is as good as the arcade version, except someone sat on it so they have to sell it as-is and hope they don't lose too much on it, what with its squished graphics and grating sound design. BBC Micro is in a similar situation to Atari 8-bit, but worse on so many levels, all of which are summarized by that nightmare in the cage pretending to be Donkey Kong. Intellivision is functional but the awful sound effects and simplified graphics don't do it any favors. Other versions would have to work to be worse than Intellivision, and boy, does Atari 2600 work. It doesn't even look like the same game and the depressing lack of music coupled with the grating sound effects makes it all the worse. Also, where's the fruit? _Your imagination._ ZX Spectrum is better in that it's more colorful, and Junior actually looks like a gorilla...except they kinda went overboard on both fronts - Junior straight-up looks like a fully grown ape and the pallet bleed is a seizure waiting to happen. Man, 2600 did this game dirty.
Bet it only had 2 stages just like the Atari 2600 Donkey Kong.
Or maybe it was Coleco who did the 2600 dirty with that horrible port, but had no issues making a somewhat decent version on their own console.
Mario in the colecovision version be like: you've yee'd your last haw!
ZX Spectrum Mario looks like a drunk fireman, falling over.
