You'd think Mario is being a bad guy, but really he is trying to keep things under control. Donkey Kong tried to kill Mario before and kidnapped Pauline and Mario is keeping him caged so he doesn't cause any trouble again, not because he is a sadist.
It makes it interesting because Jr just wants to save his dad, unaware of the crimes he committed and views Mario as a bad guy, when really, Mario is just trying to make sure dk doesn't cause trouble again.
Love this game, it was kind of rare too, at least in Massachusetts. Always played this when I found it in arcades.
The first, last and only time that Mario was labeled a villain. It was basically an act of revenge against Donkey Kong! This rivalry would renew in “Mario Kart”!
And Mario Party, and Gameboy Donkey Kong.

IIRC, the plan back then was Donkey Kong and Mario keep swapping their hero and villain like Tom and Jerry.

It’s great how the rope mechanics were used in DKC2 and that blue enemy looks a LOT like Klaptrap.
You mean the blue Snapjaws?
Not really, because in DKC2 you climb the same speed regardless how many ropes you hold, and only move faster if you hold the Y button.

I remember getting donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. twin pack 2 great games on one cartridge for the NES lol loved it.

Donkey Kong Classics on the NES with the orange label that had Donkey Kong holding Mario in 1 hand & DK Jr in the other.
Anyone I knew who owned an NES had that & not the 2 games individually.
The same with Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt.
Everyone I knew had that as well & not those 2 games separately.
By everyone, I mean my parents, my 1 Aunt & Uncle & my Grandparents.
Mario as a bad guy,also the only appearance of a mysterious "other" Mario in a cut screen,was is Luigi? Maybe...but Luigi didn't officially appear until Mario Bros.

In this game, he wanted payback for DK kidnapping Pauline in "Donkey Kong." So he captured DK and as Junior, you must save your dad.

Played this on the Atari 400 when I was very young. Even today, I can tell the differences between the home port and this. Holds up pretty well--you have to un-focus the eyes and scan all the moving critters and traps. And I've never seen another game duplicate the rope-climbing trick on display here. Nobody else climbs or slides down quite like Junior!
Did you hear about the "Mario Lineage"? Donkey Kong here is Cranky Kong (from Donkey Kong Country) in later life, DK Jr. is the current Donkey Kong, and that this is actually Jumpman and his son is the current Mario? That might mean that Pauline (who returned to the franchise character roster) is Mario and Luigi's mother....
I heard about Cranky Kong being Donkey Kong Senior while the current DK as of 1994 was DK Junior. Not sure who DK 94 had as HIS Junior since that came before Donkey Kong Land (and Diddy Kong)
First time I played this was on Colecovision….damn I feel old!
In the US, the platforms didn't happen until Level 2, and The Hideout wasn't until Level 3.
I think the US version also lacked the helicopter cutscene.
