A nice overview of the series! I would have like to have seen my name in the descriptions "credits" as "inker" but, I get it... inkers are left out a lot. Secret Wars was a deadline nightmare, so being able to do all the pages on all issues was not possible. But I did the majority of inks on all 12 issues. :-)
you are my favourite artist John Beatty. I would so love you to draw me a secret wars cover.
Did they ever make a Secret Wars Poster?
Hey man I stared at those books for years it was the most amazing thing to me as a kid in middle school.
Legend! Most fun comic ever

wow, huge fan, Mr. Beatty! Nice to see you around these parts.

Wow! 😱 He's now my favorite villian!
Doom is the most layered super villain there is. His character is amazing.
and he really has some of the best and iconic lines. Sooo arrogant and entitled, great villain

The moment when Xaviers super secret specially trained Mutie squad gets punked out by a guy who can’t keep a steady job and has zero training in anything at all.
I miss these kinds of comics.
Minus Jean, Hank and Bobby (I think he could have handled Warren), He took out Xavier and Scot first (...but why not Ororo?), then trounced everyone else. Storm should have been a problem, and Rogue COULD have been a problem if her precog powers ever kicked in, but she was too brash back then. However, the rest of the team wasn’t more than he’d faced, before. Wolverine IS a joke to him, unless Logan catches him waaaaaaaaaay distracted. Spider-Man is probably one of the biggest fouls for night crawler. Colossus isn’t more than Titania. Oh...oh... and Kitty wasn’t there. If she was fast enough. She could be a problem for a LOT more people, but she isn’t. Storm, blitzed, is a good idea too. Fighting her is like fighting the Torch - they’re nerfed by having people in the room they care about. Hm.
Stan Lee: who wins in a fight between super heros? It's all up to the writer at the end whether you like it or not.
This is one of my all time favorite story arcs in the Marvel Universe. I was 14 when this hit the racks and am still, to this day, at the age of 50, a huge comic nerd. Thank goodness for comics.
The first comic arc I recall growing up was the Trial of Gambit stuff in Uncanny X-Men in the mid 90's lol.
Almost 30 years later I'm still here. And like ya said, thank goodness for that.
im 41 just discovering comics now. 😅
Honestly I don't see Galactus as a super villain I see him as a force of nature
These are facts
Yea. Hurricane isn't a murderer...unless it's the UN manipulation of the weather to redirect a hurricane
The trial of Reed Richards brings that point home
That was actually mentioned in the comic
He's a force of nature, but also a conscious entity. There are some stories where he grapples with the morality of what he does.
the problem with the beyonder is the same "up the ante" problem in all comics. it feels so shallow to introduce some universe crushing power, only to come out later with someone else who dwarfs the first ones' power
Agreed. I'm curious as to when this level of convoluted one-upsmanship becomes the iceberg that slowly sinks the MCU...or is the Multiverse that iceberg...?
At the same time there’s small things compared to ants and then there’s what ants are to us. And then there’s us compared to super hero’s. And the. There’s super hero’s compared to galactus. Honestly it’s just cool regardless.
thats the Dragonball mantra right there...
Something that no one ever talks about when they mention Secret Wars is that that story was somewhat used in the Spider-Man animated TV show with Madame web and the beyonder
That's awesome!
And earl boen from terminator voiced the beyonder
Yeah i remember that!
Madame Web was hella annoying
@@1988ZER randomly poppin in with riddles and no damn help!
Two very underrated awesome moments in this series:
1. Spider-Man taking Titania down easily, even before he gets his black suit. Shows how much of a formidable fighter he is.
2. Cap going back to free the super villains, only to find Wolverine and Magneto are already there doing the same.
Some great character moments, even if some of the dialogue may be a bit dated. I miss some of the magic older comics had.
The were a lot of surprisingly good moments there. One of my favorites was Molecule Man's arc -- specifically the scene when he realized his true power (turning the fly into an ice cube), and how he got with Volcana and settled down (though sadly, I just now double-checked to be sure that I'd remembered correctly, and read that things didn't quite work out between them in the end).

When I first bought a stack of beat up comics , 3 issues of Secret Wars was in it. Most would say I got ripped off for paying $40 for 35 comic books in poor condition, but that stack is what inspired me to collect up to 5,000 comics over the course of ten years It also sparked my fascination with Secret Wars and eventually I found the entire set and finished the storyline. This video was a great chance to relive that time period. While others complain about the Toyline, my first intro was through the comics so I didnt realize the toy collection until a few commercials on tv. Anyway thanks for this amazing video.

Just a idea but as a honor to Stan Lee since he's made cameos in all the marvel movies so far I think it would be dope to make him the One Above All and that was him watching over the situation. It just fits in too perfectly and in universe would explain why that guy always pops up.
justin york I can get behind that
Wasn't he shown as the one above all before ?
@@RoxDZoro I know Jack Kirby has in one issue of fantastic 4 but as far the MCU goes I don't believe they have given a in universe answer to that guy so far.
“I am so fired!”
Jack Kirby is the one above all.
I think the only problem I had with the series is that there was no explanation as to how Doom actually defeated the Beyonder. Stealing the Power Cosmic from Galactus shouldn’t have been enough considering the Beyonder had already disposed of Galactus earlier in the series.
I was thinking the exact same thing
Chalk it up to doom being bmf.
Try reading the book about secret wars
There actually is a detailed explanation in the comics (and missing from this review)!
When Galactus first approached the Beyonder at the start of the story, in space, Dr. Doom flew behind him in his wake. When the Beyonder slapped Galactus down, Doom was there and analyzed the Beyonder's power with his armor's sensors. He kept this information until after he stole Galactus' power, and used it to craft an absorption device in his armor to use on the Beyonder to steal his power, the caveat being he had to be very close, like within arm's reach, to use it. This is why he attacks the Beyonder head-on, because he's just trying to get close. The Beyonder utterly wrecks him, but begins dissecting Doom out of curiosity. Doom, even while his body is being broken apart, is able to reach the device still hidden in his breastplate and activate it, stealing the Beyonder's power and winning the Secret Wars!
@@jasonseipler2665 Thank you for the explanation! I was thinking the same thing the entire time after the Beyonder was scanning Doom and learning about him, then Doom shows up giant and thats it haha, like a page was missing.
As someone who hasn't read these comics, thank you. This was a fun way to learn about the event :)
It's not the same, because the symbiote itself mixed with the personality of the person is what makes it who it becomes. So I don't believe it was venom here, but it was the symbiote that would later become venom because of the toxic nature of Eddie Brocks personality. Jusy my opinion.

I remember reading the original secret wars thinking it was so cool that comic book fans finally got to see Dr Dooms face without his mask on during secret wars, and Spider-Man's new symbiote costume was so cool then in the original secret wars too, plus we were introduced to the new Spider-woman as well then too.

On the topic of absorbing man. I had always thought to myself, if I had his powerset, I would make a bracelet/necklace/belt that had beads made from different materials.
A bead of Uru, a bead of Adamantium, diamond, steel, concrete, ect ect ect.
I would also go out of my way to meet molecule man, and have some custom, unique beads created for it.
Kinda like Kevin Levin’s little bag of marbles made from different material that gwen tried to give him

This is something the kids of today can't understand. The world was so different at that time. Having Cable TV was not the afterthought it is today. There was NO internet. These publications were IT for us as kids! We looked forward with ANTICIPATION for release dates. I don't think there really is anything comparable currently. I love seeing kids today geek out over these same stories, because it lets me know I wasn't crazy after all.
This is probably my all time favorite Marvel crossover story. I know it's not perfect. And the writers even admitted it was just meant to sell toys. But it's so fun to see all my favorite characters interact. From Spiderman all the way to Dr. Doom. The Thing ACTUALLY being a great character as opposed to a one liner. It's just fun and interesting. I hope that if they ever incorporate it into the MCU the actually try to be as faithful as possible. Not just have it be a one film pony like Civil War. But go all out Infinity War style and make it a trilogy or something.
Nothing Wrong with Toys is story is good
I was a kid in the 80s this was how I got into comics along with super friends

Captain America uses powers to fix his broken shield = Good
Dr. Doom uses powers to fix his broken face = Bad
Got to love Marvel's logic.
The difference is Captain America is using his powers to fix his shield to protect others. Not only just to protect himself.
Captain America really said “LEAVE ME BE THOT” and knockout enchantress
@Animation And Stuff 1:03:43
Though he didn't use those words ("thot" didn't even exist 'til ~2010/2012), that's an evocatively accurate summation -- and yeah, that was one hell of a good scene there. :-)
And now Captain Marvel is the thot, really a die a hero moment.
Day 1 after secret wars was officially revealed at comicon. View count: 3.3 million.
Spider-Man beating the entirety of the X-Men is still one of the best moments in Marvel History.
He was kinda getting after them, huh? Reminded me how powerful Spidey can be. Then Prof. X reminded me how X-Folks handle complicated situations.
Yeah...slapped them around pretty good didn't he ?
I totally agree!
I love the whole story but this part is by far my favorite. I have gotten crap from X-Men loving friends but still defend it.
...you misspelled "bullshit" 😉🤣
I loved it when Marvel used to do the huge cross over stories. Me and my brother would walk to the White Hen to get all the new ones and sometimes take 3a buss with 3 transfers to get to a comic shop. Think the first one we did that for was the Contest of Champions a few years before this. Thanks for the video, brought back some good memories!
As a kid I was familiar with certain Marvel characters, but this was my introduction to the Marvel Universe.
Ah, my phase 6 homework.

Or an investment tip... When the Infinity War movie came out, the price of the original infinity war comics skyrocketed to insane levels. I think the price of the original 80s secret war comics are still kind of low, especially to how far they'll jump. I'd jump on them now before the price is astronomical.

May 2027
I read comics, like a lot. This is confusing. I have a hard time seeing how they can do this “good vs evil” thing in the context of the Multiverse Saga and them fighting the extinction of reality. Maybe Beyonder Loki is exhausted from holding the multiverse together and is ready to just let the multiverse die and be reborn, unless the collaboration of these universes can show they deserve to exist. IDK just spitballing but so much of this story is contingent on good versus bad, so it’s hard to see how they can translate this to universes fighting, or AvX or whatever else they are planning on.
All the most marketable characters... and the Wrecking Crew
A Wrecking Crew movie would be lit, tho...
Wrecker is cool though. I have figures of all of those guys. Lol

Dude! Awesome job!
I wish you spoke of when Spidey humiliated the more powerful and overconfident Titania during their conflict which caused her to develop a fear of Spider-Man. Further showing how formidable the combination of spider-sense, speed, agility and strength are for Peter.
You know what the secret was? _That Colossus made time with an alien broad while still with Kitty._
@Galen Hill Damn!!! I remember that story! I think the point was even though they all had powers, they were all still "human". Things happen, but you have to bounce back. SMH, these comic books damn near raised me.
Colossus was 19 and kitty was 13 at the time. Which is disgusting. John Byrne had this gross habit of matching 12 year olds with adult men. He did it in his run of FF too. Ret-con’ed Sue Storm to have fallen in love with Read when he was 19 and she was 12.
Marvel did a good job of quietly aging Kitty up to adult much latter, but in the beginning it was fucking retched.
@@ZeroCoolIsGod As opposed to some cultures nowadays doing the same, only in an official way? I find that more disgusting than someone pointing social issues in such a subtle way that most people aren't even aware of it...just my two cents.
@Andrei Burtila
I am not entirely sure what you’re talking about. So, because some people somewhere on the planet approve of an adult entering a romantic relationship with a child, I shouldn’t point out how disgusting it is when it happens in a comic book?
Look, it’s disgusting no matter where it happens. But seeing as this is a video about the X-men, it makes sense to bring up Kitty and Colossus. It would be weird to steer the conversation off to a tangent about... what culture? What culture specifically did you want to talk about? Why did you leave it out of your lame “but what about XX” argument?
@@ZeroCoolIsGod You may find it lame, how about you get out of your shell and think a bit. It seems disgusting, sure, totally agreed, with you so far. But it presents reality. Take a look at what happens to women in Hindu or somali marriages, or before, or after. You seem to miss the point. The author may look despicable or an a** but he's only showing a side of reality that nobody looks into. So before you qualify my comment as lame and stuff, you might want to understand that most comics present reality in an accessible way. The author himself might not like it, how about that? What if the writer, like Orwell for example, presents reality in a way that triggers feelings in you and tries to make you want to know where the whole situation comes from? I'm not looking for a debate. All I would like you to see is just a bit beyond the coloured facet and into the real world. Which is something that comics have been doing since the beginning of WW2. We're talking about Marvel, they usually have a bit of a lesson about society and life in general no matter how bad the story might be written. It's about reality, choices, situations just in a different way. Just as music, for example, does.
I must say, I enjoyed the breakdown.
But after watching 9hours of your other Secret Wars Hickman run. I'm wanting more you can do so much more. You gota redo this video with all the random details and small pieces of info like you did with the 2015 Secret wars. None the less, thank you for even putting this together

Except it wasn't Stark in the Armor, It was Rhodes.
Yes but he didn't say he was Rhodes to anyone in the whole story, because the ones that knew were him and Stark only, and he did'nt want the others to think of him as a novice among them. EDIT: Reed knew. In issue 9, Rhodes, who wasn't so familiar with the armor, asked for Reed's help and was forced by him to reveal that he was in fact not Tony Stark.

The reason Reed doesn't have Ben change back to human, is Reed was able to look into Ben's mind thanks to Franklin's power, and it was Ben who had a deep desire to remain as the Thing.

This was a gateway for a lot of kids. I loved it. In the UK it was spread over I think 32 issues. It would be a bit of Secret Wars, a backup strip (Alpha Flight, Iceman, Iron Man 2020, Zoids spring to mind), and there was a running gag with a Secret Artist leaving doing humorous pictures of characters in Secret Wars in the Marvel Offices (check them out - they were really good!) and lots of 'free gifts' ubiquitous to UK comics at the time: stickers, posters on which to stick the stickers, sticker albums, transfers, pull out posters, etc.
One little nitpick: not sure why you kept calling Klaw 'Ulysses Klaw' - he was never called that in the comic (or in general at the time) - he was just called 'Klaw'. It would be like constantly calling Dr Doom 'Victor Von Doom'.

One part you left out was how insignificant Hawkeye felt being surrounded by super powered beings.
Bro imagine being Hawkeye, that’s like playing basketball at your school, but then immediately being placed next to MJ, Lebron, Kobe, Steph C, and all the other greats…
I was reading through the Chris Claremont Era of X-men and a little beyond. This event was a great change of pace and introduced me to a lot of characters I didn't know I liked until then. Kudos on this video.
Glad I just watched this! Psyched for Avengers: Secret Wars🔥🔥🔥
It’ll most likely be based on Hickmans 2005 Secret Wars comic because it is a multiversal story.
Actually check out rob cpver 2015 secret wars. That is most likely what MCU is adapting loosely

Was in Columbus over 20 years ago driving across the country coincidentally during 9/11. Absolutely loved it. Just loved it. From Syracuse originally, so Columbus is a fantastic place to live and thrive. Keep up all the hard work Rob.
No my dude we need dr. Doom to get hold of uru metals that would be unparalleled.
Storm and Xavier's argument is o n e of the strong detail scenes. Claremont would have given it callback and dealt more with Ororo being off- planet.
Rob is a LEGEND in my book and deserves to be infamized as a character in a comic or a character who is a nod to Rob.
The counterpart to The Watcher….The Teller!
Dude I love your channel me bot reading comics but loving them so I dont know anything but you explain things that spark questions for every time and I love actually knowing what's going on or why people dont like other people and power/relationships
The Spider-Man beating a whe team of X-Men pisses me off. How does he have trouble with single villains, then?
Bruh if Spider-Man wanted to he could murder every one of his villians. He holds back immensely. An example is when Doc Ock stole Spider-Man's body, he didn't know how strong Spidey was so when he fought Scorpion he knocked his jaw clean off. Even Otto was surprised at how easily Spider-Man could've killed him in multiple battles if he didn't pull his punches
I have always rated Thanos in the comics for years but Doctor Doom was and is the No1 baddest villain in Marvel. The Secret Wars cemented that. I still have the original 12 issues. Classic stuff. The symbiote merging with Peter Parker for the first time. Wolverine slicing off Absorbing Man's arm (only for Creel to reattach it, which made me rate him even more!) Spider-Man taking on the X-Men. On his own. So many classic moments.
How the hell did Doom steal the Beyonder power? Because the Beyonder wanted to see what he would do, since he was curious about human desire? It's the only reason I can think of, since it was impossible he could defeat him.
I watched about 10seconds of another post of Secret Wars... I came straight here to get it posted right.
Same
When Storm gives her speech to Charles , it is the same speech that Sun Tzu gives to The Emporer.
Good breakdown of one of the more fun Marvel stories from the 80s. Would you consider a story breakdown of Daredevil #7, when he gets his red suit and takes on Namor?
