  • This week we take a look at a Spine Tester (the `Original Spine Tester` to give the exact name) by `Heritage Longbows` run by Lee Ankers.
    We have used many spine testers over the years, we used to sell our own at one time, so we give this one a good looking over and give you our opinion on it.

    Blasted British simplicity...no need for a dial indicator

    I actually own one of your old shop made spine testers (the one with the curtain rod supports for the arrow rest)
    I created an alternate scale for it to convert to the modern aluminum spine method.
    This one is nice for the alternate scales.
    I shoot a lot of different vintage bows, with vintage arrows, so a spine tester is a necessary piece of kit for me.
    thanks.

    Nice video guy's, it's a very comprehensive piece of kit, looks good too. I've built on very similar, doesn't look as good and only does the type of arrows I use, but I'm sure you'll have no problem selling them. You didn't say how much they are?

      Glad you like it. There is a link to purchase the item in the box below the video, the price is there, prices change so no point mentioning it in the video.

      @@longbows thankyou, I've had a look at the link and it's reasonably priced considering the different types of arrows it caters for.

    That is an excellent spine tester. Works with wood or aluminum. Works with standard, heavy and light shafts. I think that is the most versatile tester I have seen. I like that it sets up and stands alone on a table/bench while in use.

    Thanks for making the video and showing how it`s done.
    For us that uses the metric system, how much is 2# in gram, f.ex?

    Son bought one. Measured against marked spines he bought, probably 50% accuracy, usually 1-2lb out. . Difficulty with balance arrow/pointer. When arrow taken of the tester, arrow indicator dropped to the arrow rest unlike your demo where the arrow pointer returns to the states line.

    Not a bad looking spine tester but it does have unnecessary limitations when you consider that it has an AMO and ally arrow scales. As you know, carbon shafts are measured between 28" supports and a 1.94# weight. Trad recurve under EFAA can now use carbons leaving just primitive bare bow, AFB and ELB left using wood shafts. That spine tester wouldn't need much to make it suitable for everyone...just the capability to extend the arrow supports out another 2" and a 1.94# weight plus a 0.06# add on adapter!

      The scale should work correctly for carbons with the 2lb weight supplied

    • @leeankers1075
      @leeankers1075 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Keith just to clarifty. The spine tester is using 26" between supports and a 2lb weight. 26" used to be AMO now ATA, For carbons 28" is used with a 1.94lb weight which is ASTM. The scale on the spine tester has already been converted so that although you will be spining a carbon shaft at 26" the scale will read the equivalent of 28" with a 1.94lb weight. Aluminiums are spined the same so will work fine. We went for 26" so that you could use it with shorter arrows, with the 28" you are more limited. Everything has been crosschecked with the Pound equivalent and it all tallies.
