I get the conundrum of buying a pattern when you don't need one to make a very similar quilt. I can look at a picture and make my own pattern, why wouldn't I do that? I have bought a couple patterns to save time and brain energy.
I think it is an interesting problem given that so many traditional designs are just available for free and we get used to that idea. I do try to support designers when I can.
