  • The dance of the dragons that was close to coming, one man would play a key role in its start. Corlys Of House Velaryon, better known as The Sea Snake. His adventures across the world were legendary and had made him a very rich man and granted him the hand of a Targaryen Princess. Now the sons and grandsons of House Velaryon were set to be Kings of Westeros, or so it would seem but fate had something else in mind. Game Of Thrones / House of the dragon are HBO shows based on Geroge R R Martins A Song Of Ice And Fire series. The information in this video comes from the books a world of ice and fire as well as fire and blood.

    Perhaps my favourite character of the ASOIAF, I love how he went from being a hopeful adventurer and swaggering merchant to a decrepit old man who just wants peace and his family to stop dying.

      He was an incredible character. A Marco Polo of Westeros, a second and better Magellan for ASOIAF. On the small council, he was a wise and influential man whose proposals for peace and compromise were in the best interests of the realm. Far better to end the war while still having a chance to save the dragons that ensured peace and stability.

    So odd to know before HotD, Corlys was white. Steve Toussaint portrayal of Corlys was so great, it makes it so bizzare to not see him as black.

    I kind of feel bad for him and think he is one of or rather the character that lost the most during the Dance because imagine being young, doing various voyages, and making your house the most wealthiest of all houses in Westeros. Suddenly, anyone in those circumstances would think that the world is at their fingertips so, why not go for more? Why not play the Game that all Lords play? And manage to put your house on the Iron Throne. But, after the Dance, all that he had accomplished and hold dear was gone and reduced to songs. Maybe I'm reading too much into this but I believe that at least at one point during the Dance he would reminisce about his younger days and ask himself how he got into this mess.

    • @WorldOfWesteros
      @WorldOfWesteros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your spot on. He really did lose so much. He went from the most powerful and rich man in the kingdom with one hand on the throne to losing nearly everything he built. I think its why he tried to get Rhaenyra to sue for peace after she had captured kings landing, he'd lost so much already.

      @@WorldOfWesteros GoT had Stark, Baratheon, Lannister, Tyrell and of course Targaryen as the main five houses with fleshed out characters throughout those families...
      I'm hoping/expecting HotD will have a similar structure with Hightower, Velaryon, Strong and of course Targaryen, both Blacks and Greens as the main five with extended households and a range of fleshed out characters. Obviously other houses will feature as they did in GoT, including the major houses, but the story pivots around the characters from these houses and their councils etc in my opinion.

    • @WorldOfWesteros
      @WorldOfWesteros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those house are such key parts of the story I definitely think we have to have the more fleshed out. Of not the story won’t work well at all. I just hope they don’t take the main show approach and remove houses for simplistic storytelling. My main worry is they make it a targ vs targ thing without delving into what’s happen with the other key players

    HBO is making House Velaryon black. Uhmmmm. This will only work if they didn't marry Targaryens now.

    • @WorldOfWesteros
      @WorldOfWesteros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would make Aegon the conqueror and Jaehaerys mixed race. i way i've seen discussed to get around its have Corlys's father marry someone with dark skin. We know very little about his mother and father so there is a bit of wiggle room in there. It's not perfect solution but its what i have seen talked about as a way to keep lore intact. The main issue is Corlys would be mixed which the actor is not. there is defiantly ways to make it work, just if they ever intended to go back and do anything with Aegon or Jaehaerys then they've really shot themselves in the foot lore wise. The argument people are saying is its very short sighted in terms of the long term impact of future spin offs. End of the day i expect there play it off with a throw away line that makes little sense but makes it work with the cannon of the show.

    • @WorldOfWesteros
      @WorldOfWesteros  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the approach hbo has shown in the past. What I suspect is if they do go back to Aegon or Jaehaerys at any point they will just retcon there parents marrying Velaryons and just make up some new Targaryen. It only gets a bit complicated when Alyssa Velaryon get married to Rogar Baratheon. But these kinds of details are so small the show can ignore it and get away with it. Basically I think there ether work backwards and retcon, invent some black Westeros houses or have The sea snakes father marrying someone from the summer isle. I suspect it will be a mix of all three.end of the day like you say show is the show, book is the book. Right now it only is a problem if they ever decided to go back in time

    The Valyrians are famous for having silver-gold (platinum blonde) hair, very pale skin, and violet-purple eyes. The whole story/world makes no sense when you race-swap a character whose features are integral to the storyline.

      @dakotamadeleinel.1973 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      he still has silver hair so it shouldn't mess up the paternity plotline, and for all we know he's half summer islander, considering the velaryons are sailors and all

      @phoenicianprince4635 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dakotamadeleinel.1973 Short breakdown is, Rhaenys has black hair, dark hair mother light father, Corlys is light hair, in this change, dark hair mother, light hair father, Dark features dominate valyrian features, we need not look further then Targaryen and Baratheon interbreeding or Targaryen and Dornish interbreeding. So we come to the problem of Laenor and Laena Velaryon who are both described as furvently white hair. The only possible fix for this is essentially that Corlys mother had some form of Albinism [Which has it's own issues] or she herself was half Lyseni [or insert valyrian like ethnic group here] and even then it almost doesn't work at all.

      In the end, does it really matter? Think about this one, the show gave House Velaryon half of the dragons in Westeros. In the books, only House Targaryon had dragons. To me that is a much bigger change than The Velaryons being dark-skinned. The dragon thing puts them on the same level of power as the Targaryons. And they are still masters of the sea in the show. So some would say they are a stronger house in the show. But some dark people being decendants of Old Valyria ... how does that change the story when the characters in show don't register the racial change?
