The Great Rift Of Jaehaerys & Alysanne (Jaehaerys Reign) Game Of Thrones History & Lore

  • The match between King Jaehaerys Targaryen and Good Queen Alysanne was maybe the best Westeros ever saw. But just like any relationship, this does not mean they got on and agreed, all of the time. This was the case after the death of their daughter and the king's harsh treatment of Alysanne in regard to their lost child across the narrow sea. Much of the information has come from The World Of Ice and Fire as well as fire and blood, set in Geroge r r Martin's World Of Westeros.

    The Targaryen household army is almost never seen or mentioned in the story. The castle garrison was briefly mentioned during Jaehaerys awesome regency but that’s about it. You’d think by this time they’d be even larger and stronger than the Lannisters by the time of the five kings.

      I think one factor may be the Targaryen holdings are actually quite small compared to the other big houses with just Dragonstone and the crownlands. But they still should have had more of there own forces. Maybe they were just happy to rely on there vasells which is risky. It’s why political marriages became so important because whoever this married there family’s army effectively because the royal army. It’s why I find Joffrey idea of a standing army quite compelling on the book/show and definitely how i see things going after post long night if the books are the same at all

      The Targaryens, and King Robert after them should have carved out a big chunk of the Reach (Ashford, Longtable, Blueburn) and add it to the Crownlands to enhance the King's power

      Well, the Reach was were most of the food came from, the Riverlands being the only second ones to compare. So while you could argue they should've altered some of the borders to give the Crownlands more land, I feel the argument is more so for the Targaryens to have more of their own holdings in the Crownlands (or rather, just more of their own personal troops)
      The King's power isn't the debate here, it's the Targaryen's personal Household's Forces. Dragons died out but they never really did much to augment it.

      Well, maybe the 150+ years AFTER the Dance could've seen the Targaryens rely more on men at hands, not their now dead dragons..

    What is rather pathetic is how the noble houses never said, "Say, this Great Council thing is pretty neat." "Lets let the most important lords gather as a permanent deliberative body...let's call it a Congress or a parliament or something..."

    There is a theory that Aemon was killed intentionaly by the crossbowman.
    Who was hired by the oldtown triard.
    Since a skilled crossbowman would not hit the guy next to his target.
    And a Targaryen would be very easy to spot.

    • @WorldOfWesteros
      @WorldOfWesteros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I buy it. Makes a lot of sense. The series of events shown in fire and blood is all a bit convenient. Like how could they know they were aiming for Lord Tarth and missed. All guess work. Least this theory makes a lot more sense and fits

    • @sithwizard5775
      @sithwizard5775 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I don’t think so. The pirates probing the Tarth camp seemed to do so spontaneously. There was also no way anyone could predict the prince would expose himself as much as he did and why would someone want to kill him?

    • @finnmerkle7739
      @finnmerkle7739 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@sithwizard5775 I'm pretty sure aemon was the target.
      The crossbowman would just need to wait for a commander to expose himself and kill him. If he was the target fron the beginning of the mission. I'd say probably, he is as everyone on that island would know a dragon rider. And silver hair make a man very easy to spot.

    • @sithwizard5775
      @sithwizard5775 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True perhaps the Prince was the target but I still think they were enemy snipers targeting the highest ranking officer in camp and not pre planned assassins but it’s possible.

    • @WorldOfWesteros
      @WorldOfWesteros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Either way works really. It makes sense the crossbowmen would just target the highest-ranking person there. But again it wouldn't surprise me if there was more to it, just how the text is written if there was more to it. My main issue is the text is fairly clear in saying the prince was not the target and the crossbowmen missed and hit him when it would be impossible to really know the true target of the crossbows, it's all assumptions but presented as fact. It's why I like fire and blood so much because you really have to factor in the writer's bias and allows a lot of speculation like this and some other cool ideas. In reality, he was I high profile target so either way, it makes sense to target him, either way he exposed himself and was overconfident. Is there room for assassins in there, sure. It's an interesting speculation and would fit, but ultimately the outcome is the same

    You know this is where I felt this whole dance of the dragons fall a little blame on Jaehaerys shoulders. He could have easily named Rhaenys princess of Dragonstone after her father death Aemon it was her birth right. No one question Maegor when he named Aerea his heir. That great council only delayed the dance of dragons. My question is if Aemon had survived and if he became king would he had have named his daughter his heir??

    • @WorldOfWesteros
      @WorldOfWesteros  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The idea of who caused the dance is a bit of a rabbit hole that goes off in loads of direction based on what if. There is 100% a scenario where Aemon lives, maybe Rhaenys becomes queen maybe not. i suspect Aemon being a young man would have had other children, perhaps a son. But the fact they only had Rhaenys if all that time is a bit odd. There are so many moment is history you can point to a say what if. Aemon's death and Jaehaerys choice to name Baelon heir is one of them no matter if you agree with him or not. When i comes to Maegor naming Aerea his heir i tend to fall on the side that he didn't really have another choice given how small the family was at this point with the only other option being Jaehaerys which would 100% something Maegor was want to avoid. I read a theory once that Jaehaerys never acknowledged the fact Aerea was Maegors named heir as it would technically invalidate his own claim thus it is part of the reason he was so firm of Baelon over Rhaenys, trouble with that theory is, there is not much in the text to support it.

    • @lucasbelmonte2832

      Maegor named Aerea his heir because his only other living male descendant was Jaehearys who he wanted dead. Also at the great council it wasn’t even Rhaenys against Viserys it was Laenor. Viserys was the oldest living male relative, I’m surprised he wasn’t just named heir.

    For how great Jaehaerys was overall, he was the main reason the seeds for the Dance were sown at all(by making people vote rather than just saying the elder Rhaenys should be queen). He was also willing to let the First Night customs continue until Barth and Alysanne both got on his ass about it.
    I guess he's not as bad as Maegor, but come on, we need to at least mention it whenever people put Jaehaerys as the best king...

    • @charlieswanney8610
      @charlieswanney8610 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      You need to realise that a king can’t do everything they want, Jaehaerys wanted to get rid of the first night but knew that the lords would be pissed and revolt. If enough lords got angry about this they could rebel and then he wouldn’t have been king of anything and would have to destroy the people he ruled over. If someone does whatever they want, they are sure to make enemys, and a king needs to keep a reputation so he can rule over the small people

      Putting a female on the throne would have wreaked just as much havoc as the dance considering that's a large part of why it happened in the first place

    • @thedarkestfateful
      @thedarkestfateful ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That’s the reason why Jaeherys even put it to a vote in the first place, because there were so many claimants to the throne and he knew that if he went with a female, the lords wouldn’t allow it and would rise up and go to war. Baelon was favoured because he was a man, and because he had strong sons that could inherit after he passed, ensuring a succession of Kings. While Queen Alysanne wanted her daughters to have their claims acknowledged, there was nothing he could do about it. The lords and the smallfolk want a King, not a Queen. He prevented a succession war after his death as best as he could and Viserys undid all that.
