    Hi Rob. I thoroughly enjoyed your Trangia video which led me on to this one and I have now subscribed. I look forward to seeing your current videos and new ones when published. Tilley and pressure lamps/stoves have been a large part of my life since my first camping experience with St John Ambulance at the tender age of 13. It I’d an excellent idea to test run a new or recently serviced lantern without a mantle to clear the carbon flakes etc from the vaporiser, it also gives a good impression of the condition of the vaporiser which has a finite lifespan and also pressure retention. A small hint would be to carry out the Bunsen test without the glass in place. Should the vaporiser be Jet be worn to such a degree then the fuel flow can be excessive resulting in a much longer, larger flame. A cracked globe is an expensive item to replace. Another word of warning: a pair of Tilley lanterns will breed, it happened to me. You will also discover the older models have more character and are of a much better build quality than the X246B. That being said, my go to user lantern is my red X246B (dated 1991) and is the only “purchased new” one that I own. Once you start using pressure lanterns whilst camping it won’t be long before you start cooking on Primus style stoves! Keep up the good work. Kind regards, Broadlander

      Not going to lie. I think i watched also all your videos while doing research for this one. Big fan btw of your work and passion. So when i saw your name and pic i was a bit taken back. Thanks for the sub and comments on this one and my trangia film. As for the lamp multiplying, they're happily living together atm. All the best, take it steady.

    Hi Rob. This is one of the best Tilley overhaul videos I've seen.
    I bought mine new, it was made in 5/83, so I think it is an X246B Mk.2. (Aluminium control v/v suction cup). It ran well for about 15 years but then began running erraticly. I took it pieces and used the SP1 service kit to renew the usual offenders.
    I found that the replacement square NR v/v's in the suction cup and pump (part # 155) were wider and thicker than those originally supplied. I went back to the dealer who knew of the problem and got them changed for the correct smaller ones. It didn't improve things much and my next step was going to be to renew the vaporiser. I tried cleaning it again as they were having supply problems but I think the problem is around the needle/nozzle.
    I lost interest after going through umpteen mantles so it went into the shed for about 25 years. I was going to chuck it out last year but my family want me to fix it. I bought a genuine Tilley washer kit (498) and came across the same non-return valve problem as the first time.
    Have you or anybody else ever heard of this problem? I'm not shelling out for a new pump and control v/v and I need to sort this before getting a new vaporiser.
    Subscribed.

      @TheSussexOutdoorsman  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a tricky one as I've not had any problems with that area if the lamp. I did take the pump and nr valve about once to give it a good clean so i know the parts you mean. Is it loosing pressure or is the flame pulsing when fired up? might be a bad flow of fuel in the vaporiser. Thanks for watching. Thanks for watching.

    • @TheRunereaper
      @TheRunereaper 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for replying Rob. It runs perfectly for about an hour but then starts to dim badly, pumping up the tank doesn't help. If I blip it off/on, it cures the problem, sometimes for a minute, sometimes for 10 but the dimming problem returns soon enough. It definitely holds pressure, the control v/v shuts off flow up to the vaporiser and I'm fairly confident that the latter is the problem, in spite of using carb cleaner and blowing through with meths.
      Fitting the new, larger 155 NR v/v's from the 498 kit is a no-no. The pump just compresses internally and the v/v jams in the v/v guide at the bottom. Similarly, the other 155 v/v sometimes blocks off flow through the control v/v.
      I refitted the old, smaller 155 v/v's I serviced the lamp with, back around 1998 and the pump and control v/v's now function correctly again. I'd emptied the tank before putting it away and they are still good but that won't last forever.
      I bought a boxed, unused X246B today for £51 off eBay, so I'll prove that one first and then try out the vaporiser from that one in my current one. It will be interesting to see what size NR v/v's it has.
      Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply.
      I never understood why Tilley didn't supply a pot stand and pan base to slot over the hood. It would have provided much more even cooking than my Trangia.

      @@TheSussexOutdoorsman Thanks for the response, I'll check that. After watching your video I took the control valve off the base - I didn't realise that was possible! Anyway I took a chance this morning and opened the valve. It'll looked in good condition so I just tightened it up and that seems to have done the trick. Also I hadn't realised you could run it without a mantle, so after putting it back together I tried that following what you did. Worked perfectly. @@TheSussexOutdoorsman Well it lights but with a massive sooty, yellow flame.
      The adjustments needed on the tap seem very small, almost closed to get the blue flame.
      The little pressure indicator piston is above flush so maybe too much pressure/pumping.
      Without paraffin there was a steady, gently stream of air coming out the top of the vaporizer.
      I'm uncertain what's inside the vaporiser, if the top bit comes off, or if the burner head is dismantable.

    • @TheSussexOutdoorsman
      @TheSussexOutdoorsman  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is it sort of pulsing? I found i needed to give the vaporizer tube a bit of a clean with a long pipe cleaner to dislodge any stiff bits of carbon stuck up there. That may solve the issue.

      Way the burner is held in mk1 as three locking rings and no 2 as a simple ring with split pin and the none return games are different mk1 as flat washer in a brass cup
      With spring and filter and mk2 washer with nipple no brass cup just spring and filter and control valve is the same on mk2

    1) @ 21:34 onwards, it's not a great or clever idea to waft naked flames around a jar of meths with the lid off and have the open jar on the bench in close proximity of naked flames, knock the jar over and you would be having an interesting conversation with your home insurance company !
    2) I never see the point of not replacing all the seals especially the NRV,s when it is stripped down as far as you got, replace the lot and it will give many years use without any more attention to seals being needed, and extra 10-15 mins is all that's required !
