    I was never in the scouts but as a kid in the 70’s I loved going to the outside toilet where we had a Tilley lamp and my parents thought I had great bowel movements but really it was an excuse to light the lamp, had to do it with the window open though. Even then being a miner and builder my dad warned me about the harmful gases. But thanks I’ve just got a new old stock Tilley lamp for fishing and it’s great even in the day just to keep you warm if it’s cold and great at night nothing rivals it.

      Most of our lamps are gas now. But I'm with you and keeping the Tilleys going is important so their not forgotten.

      I go fishing for weeks on end sometimes in the coldest holes in Britain and my Tilley is the only one that works for light and heat nothing at all rivals it keeps me warm all day and night. Less industrial processes used to make it much less so even though gas burns cleaner the carbon footprint using paraffin is almost half as much. Never use modern things they are cr@p

    We lived in the far outback of the Kalahari Desert in Africa in the 1950s - when no electricity was available. My mother was always petrified she would cause an explosion. The Tilley lamp was our main source of light.

      Their sure a great lamp. I know the feeling when they don't light first time and go up in flames. Never known one to be dangerous though. Thanks for watching, and taking time to comment.

    My first meeting with a Tilley Lamp was during the energy crisis in the early 1970's. My gran bought one to use during power cuts. It gave not only great light but a fantastic heat too. A couple of years ago I bought a second hand one on e-bay, gave it a good clean and changed all the washers on it. Very nostalgic for me as it was almost the same as the red one my gran bought all those years ago. With the way electric prices are going it looks like it will be getting used a lot in the future. Good old Tilley!

    I didn't quite hear the other lantern brand that you are partial to that you mentioned near the end of the video. Thank you.

    Thanks for tutorial. I have Petromax HK500 in active use. My old Hasag, newcomers Optimus 200 and Geniol 150 are awaiting restoration. Now I´m looking after original Tilley. These lamps are so mesmerizing, and light what they give is amazing in dark night.

    Thank you mate.
    I just realised that most Tilley lamps on ebay dont have the preheater torch so some of the "bargains" would actually require an immediate extra cost. Thank you.
    In answer to your question though, I have a few Eccles lamps. They are nowhere near as bright, but I love them because they are incredibly safe and burn all night on a tiny amount of fuel.
    Thank you for the video fella.

      I do like the old Eccles lamps. They are great for all night burning. Don't own one myself so normally use the hurricane lamp.

      About £12 for a new pre heater. TilleyLampsandstoves do an offer with a mantle and a meths jar.
      The new ones are Kevlar as opposed to the original with had asbestos. Old ones were better made though

      That’s right, I buy mine at car boots but usually are missing the pre heat torch. I love the bialaddin which seems to be a superior design with the meths cup built into the design.

  • @seanwilson471
    @seanwilson471 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Also I noticed that you open the control valve before pressurising the lamp. Instructions from Tilley say to keep the valve closed until the meths has nearly burnt down. Pressurise about 10 or 20 pumps then just before the meths goes out open the valve and the lamp should light with a pop.

    I got an old one which hasnt heen used in years, with the preheating bowl, but i wonder? Should there be some sort of material in the bowl, to hold the meths so it doesnt slop around?
    Cheers, you've made a good easy to understand video. Am going to look at your complete service video next.

    • @TheSussexOutdoorsman
      @TheSussexOutdoorsman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. As for the preheater, there should be some wadding in it to soak the meths. You could use some old cotton cloth or something.
      The service video is a bit long and drawn out but hopefully you find it helpful.

    I don't know why, I am not a clumsy person and I do have genuine Tilley mantles (From Tilley International here in the UK) but I simply cannot get them over the spigots. Both the larger and the smaller holes seem to be just too small and the string breaks when I try to tease it over the spigot. Do you have any thoughts on this please?

    • @TheSussexOutdoorsman

      They are very tight. But with a bit of work they should fit. Hope you have another to have a go at. Thanks for watching.

    Hi, Thank you for such a great video. I purchased my Tilley Lamp X246B some 30 years ago and I am now going to use it once again.
    The paraffin is as old as the lamp itself...am I OK to uses the paraffin, I have quite a lot.
    Also, do you recommend a brand of paraffin and supplier ??
    Cheers. Mike.

    • @TheSussexOutdoorsman
      @TheSussexOutdoorsman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Give it a go. See if it burns properly. If not just get some from hardware stores or garden centers it's not that expensive. Great to hear you want to get it working again.

    Hi, great video, told me pretty much everything I needed to know. Just a few questions. Is it not easier to fit the mantle by unscrewing the tube it fits to? Also, what other fuels is it possible to use? I was interested in the possibility of using ethonol, as is doesn't smell and burns much cleaner. Lastly, how long does a tank of fuel last approximately? Thanks in advance.

    • @TheSussexOutdoorsman
      @TheSussexOutdoorsman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. When it comes to fitting a new mantle, in my experience you need the fit the top ring first, that's then fixed to the burner. Meaning you cant then remove the spigot to fit the bottom ring. Hope that makes sense, and you'll find a way that works for you. Also i wouldn't run the lamp with anything other then paraffin. Hope that helps.

    • @TheSussexOutdoorsman
      @TheSussexOutdoorsman  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      from my translation your asking, 'how long can the cloak be used?'
      the mantle will last a long time as long time as long as its not damaged and with clean start ups.
      And the lamp itself will run for up to 12 hours with a full tank of paraffin (850ML)
      thanks for watching, hope this helps.

    hello there, where did you source the mantles without those fiddly tie cords thanks

    • @TheSussexOutdoorsman
      @TheSussexOutdoorsman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you get the genuine ones from Ebay or the Tilley website (cant remember the part number so see video again for that). They come pre tied to the exact size of the spigot. Can be still be fiddly but a much better fit then the ones you tie yourself.

      New ones come fully kitted out with a (slightly different) funnel to fuel-up, and a jar with the "pre-heater torch". Wife just bought one for my birthday but I have others: one currently working perfectly and two others that will require some TLC to get them back into action.@@TheSussexOutdoorsman
