Great video Rob, I’ve got the garberg black carbon steel and it’s a great blade, take this as a compliment i think your like a young John Wilson of the bushcraft world. It’s nice to see your subscribers have increased to, im surprised it’s taken this long for people to jump on as you are so addictive to watch.
Thanks for saying that mate. It's been hard to get the time to go out and get some filming done. But I'm glad this film found it's target audience. Hope for some good weather in the new year and maybe time for a spot of fishing too.
Can’t go wrong with the King Garberg, It’s all you need.
It seems to be a great all-round bushcraft knife. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
Great video.. how long will it run for on a full tank ?
Great video.. how long will it run on a full tank ?
Lovely video. Not a fan of the Garberg though. The lack of a finger guard is a dealbreaker for me. I am an experienced knife user but I prefer my knives to have some sort of guard -- especially a more heavy duty knife. A slip can happen so easily out in the wild and its always better to be safe than sorry.
I know the feeling with the guard, but at least it's quite grippy. I have a Helle with a round wooden handle and it just feels one wrong move and your going to have a accident.
@@TheSussexOutdoorsman Precisely. And it doesn't have to be a giant guard either, even the one on the Mora Clipper (my favorite Mora) is sufficient.
So good video. Greetings from Polish forests.
Thanks for watching. Some of the European forest's are epic.
Tell it to the Barrows of the Dead - run ahead! Shout it so the Women's Side can hear! This is the Buyer of the Blade - be afraid! This is the great god Tyr!
I've always found the Garberg to be too heavy and clumpy. My knife of choice at the moment is the Kansbol, can't see past it and a lot,lot lighter than the Garberg. I tandem it with a SAK. Happy Trails !
@@clivedunning4317 i did like the look of the kansbol, i opted for the garberg just for the heavy-duty aspect. Thanks for watching.
Great to come across you Rob. I am also a West Sussex man living almost on the Serpents Trail. Will enjoy following your vids. Also a great Garberg fan - have been using mine for years and found it pretty bomb proof. Wishing you best of luck with your youtube journey. Esmond
Thanks Esmond. I look forward to getting back on the trail. Also the Garberg dose seam a really good heavy duty knife to do loads of camp tasks. Thanks for watching.
You’re very English, Mate!😂 I have the same knife in black. Very sturdy blade! I think it is great for the tough chores, but for food prep and fine carving , it is way too thick for my taste. I usually carry the Opinel for those tasks anyway! A good compromise in Mora is the Kansbol. Same design but a thinner front portion of the blade. I had to buy one of those as well. It can become a bit of an addiction!😂Thanks for sharing your experience with this knife.😊
I agree it would be a bit big for finer carving and other small tasks. But i will try making a pot hanger or something to give it a go. Thanks for watching, and taking time to comment.
I picked up 4 robust knives for £6 each whilst I was staying in Poland, great knives, it's not full tang but is pretty strong. I love my Garberg it's probably my most used knife but if you're on a budget or just don't like spending too much for a knife the robust certainty is the way to go. If you don't use your knife for splitting rounds of wood like what you were splitting the kansbal is a great camp knife.
Wow that's a deal. The Robust is one of my favorite knives, but the Garberg is a big upgrade.
@@TheSussexOutdoorsman definitely 😁👍🏻 I didn't get one straight away to be honest because I wasn't convinced probably because of the price, I picked up a stainless steel one for £37 plus delivery in a sale a couple of years ago, but after using it I wouldn't have been disappointed if I'd paid full price, especially now they have come down in price a lot.
the Robust is not full tang, but yeah,it can defo do most things, the Garberg though,is a different beast all together...fantastic...good vid!
I was mislead on thinking the Robust was full tang, but it's sure strong enough to do some buttoning. I reallyeally like the feel of the Garberg, so it's a great upgrade.
pretty hard to beat a garberg
It sure seems a great one. Look forward to putting it to work.
Mora robust is 3/4 tang do ya homework
@@philliphanwell9057 i may have been misinformed. Seeing some x-rays they are a little short of the end. Still a good and sturdy knife though.
Thanks for sharing 😊

Don't chizzle out the middle for your Swedish log face all 4 quarters bark inwards and it does the same without the hassle
@@leemichel8199 that's an interesting way to make it. Only thing would be you don't have that wood base and then you need to collect wood to burn instead of using the bits you cut out. I give try some time. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
I have a lot of sharp and shiny things, and garberg is my favourite affordable range knife .bps and condor way up there, too. I have more than enough to compare ,great content, brother. God bless you and your family. Lee
They are tremendous knives. Have you managed to get out on the Rother much before this awful weather?
@@jbradshaw4236 Mora sure do make some of the best knives on the market. As for the fishing, i kind of took a back seat over the last few months. Had a good go back in the summer with some nice results. Hope to get the rods out again soon.
Mora Garburg is one of the best survival knives out their and for its price range, you made a good 👍 choice.
Where rust comes the zinc plating is gone, you can try to give this part a patina with vinegar to get a little rust protection. Put a folded sheet of kitchen towel soaked in vinegar over the part or component. In 24 to 48 hours in vinegar you can even get a black patina.
Ive heard vinegar is good for cleaning and works well at protecting the metal, I may try the paper towel soaking tip. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
We lived in the far outback of the Kalahari Desert in Africa in the 1950s - when no electricity was available. My mother was always petrified she would cause an explosion. The Tilley lamp was our main source of light.
Their sure a great lamp. I know the feeling when they don't light first time and go up in flames. Never known one to be dangerous though. Thanks for watching, and taking time to comment.

Hi mate, thank you for this video! I’m trying to get into bushcraft but it’s confusing on where I can do this. Do you just find forests and avoid people?
@@jamesjames77777 if you're in the uk. I would start off small. Go to a local woods you know well and spend some time outdoors. Don't buy or bring loads of gear, just enjoy your time in the woods. Then as time goes on you may want to invest in some tools and find a more secluded spot to try some outdoor cooking or wild camping if you're into that sort of thing.
@ really appreciate the response, thank you! I spent my youth in the woods, we never went to pubs, we just stayed around Surrey and built fires and made rudimentary shelters, a little bit in Scotland too. Always incredibly respectful and always left where we stayed as we found it. This was 20 years ago and I’m now 40 and TH-cam exists : ) I work in London in a manic job and I adore the wilderness and being alone. Videos like yours are like therapy and the idea of working responsibly with the land makes my brain feel better. But my older head is worried now because rules and regulations have become stringent and I want to do things right. Thanks for your advice though, I’ll start like that in the areas we used to go to. All the best
I have a load of these as I’m a collector and can’t pass one by ! A small tip. When taking out the globe,(glass) 1) raise the bail handle to the verticle position. 2) place the palm of your hand on top of the handle 3) reach your middle finger down to the ring pull on the chimney 4) close your fist. It just looked awkward the way you were doing it. Perhaps that was for the camera angle but the way I’ve explained is the way they’re designed to operate. Keep your eyes open at car boot sales for the “ super baby “ model as they are rarer and worth a few £.
@@TonyM540 thanks for the guide. Luckily i don't have to take the glass out to often. But I'll try to get better at it using that method. Thanks for watching.
I was never in the scouts but as a kid in the 70’s I loved going to the outside toilet where we had a Tilley lamp and my parents thought I had great bowel movements but really it was an excuse to light the lamp, had to do it with the window open though. Even then being a miner and builder my dad warned me about the harmful gases. But thanks I’ve just got a new old stock Tilley lamp for fishing and it’s great even in the day just to keep you warm if it’s cold and great at night nothing rivals it.
Most of our lamps are gas now. But I'm with you and keeping the Tilleys going is important so their not forgotten.
I go fishing for weeks on end sometimes in the coldest holes in Britain and my Tilley is the only one that works for light and heat nothing at all rivals it keeps me warm all day and night. Less industrial processes used to make it much less so even though gas burns cleaner the carbon footprint using paraffin is almost half as much. Never use modern things they are cr@p
Paraffin lamp oil is very chemically similar to kerosene. That said, it is cleaner burning and would be preferable to kerosene.
Nice, thanks for the heads up. I'll keep that in mind.
Boom!! Yes Rob! Finally got a chill evening which means I've had the delight of catching up with these 2 videos! Love you both 😘
Oh yes, the trail will be continued. Hope to get out again soon.

@@andyparton6680 sometimes. If it's to high it'll flicker a bit.
Thank you , ive not lit one for 70 years, it all seems like yesterday thanks to this excellent video 👍 😊
Glad you found it helpful. Definitely my favorite lamps to use.
Hi, good video. Just got a lamp. The pump unit bit seems to be stuck in. Guess try and lever it out without bending anything?
Ah OK, it's screwed in, was just a bit tight. Thought I saw yours just lifted out.
Try getting some oil onto the thread somehow and let it work it's way in. Then try with a some pliers or some light grips. Hope you can get it out okay.
@@TheSussexOutdoorsman Well it lights but with a massive sooty, yellow flame. The adjustments needed on the tap seem very small, almost closed to get the blue flame. The little pressure indicator piston is above flush so maybe too much pressure/pumping. Without paraffin there was a steady, gently stream of air coming out the top of the vaporizer. I'm uncertain what's inside the vaporiser, if the top bit comes off, or if the burner head is dismantable.
I wish Feuerhand was making more models. I just got power back on. 8 days after Helene swept through here and left a big mess (No Christmas card for her this year!). The one lesson learned hard..... my oil lamps were worth their weight in gold. Except for my Surefire light running CR123's, every battery-powered gizmo I had in storage was useless due to corrosion and dead batteries. My oil lamps, though, gave me plenty of light at night and created an atmosphere that was just right for relaxing in troubled times. The more decorative type of lamps are good, but just not as robust and portable as the Feuerhand hurricane lanterns. Plus, I like that Feuerhand is the only brand on the market not made in chicom territory. All through the 8 days I was without power, and talking with others, the only thing we could rely on for sure was Old Tech. Wood-burning stoves provide heat and a way to cook without forcing you to rely on charitable donations and hope. My chainsaw was acting up after sitting for better than a year without running, but my axes and pruning saws worked perfectly and allowed me to clean up, again without relying on others or having to brave the mad crowds of unprepared folks scrambling for whatever they could get at the few stores able to open. Everywhere I looked, the Old Tech was working just as it has for the last thousand years.... while people were fighting over the gas pumps, sitting in line for hours just to get half a tank, etc. The only thing I would really have liked to have was a small radio so I could hear a little of what was going on out in the world. Sadly, I haven't found anything decent and robust that runs on CR123's.
Wow you really had a tough time. I know it's a old saying but ' they don't make things like they used to.' we need to keep our old tech in working order as it's built to last and not just cheap and disposable. So glad your lamp helped you in a time of need. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
@@TheSussexOutdoorsman Truthfully, I got off very very lucky. Sure, I lost all the food in the fridge and freezer, but that's small potatoes to others in town who had trees down all over the place, including right through the middle of their houses. The folks in North Carolina and such places really got wrecked and need whatever aid they can get. One big lesson here is that everyone got complacent. We learned to take the easy way out because there was always a store just a few minutes away. Nobody grows their own food, cans and pickles for the winter, etc. A lot of people have propane grills, sure, but that requires you to have a supply of propane close by.... which we learned won't always be the case. I guess the main takeaway from it all is that you need to be aware that a winter storm could knock out the power for more than just a day or two, and to plan for that. Food, water, and illumination for at least a week, per person, and maybe even longer.
Thanks for the lesson im going to restore mine. Ive been told that the last two numbers in the middle of the underside of the tank tells the date, mine was made in 73.
Hope you have a good time restoring your lamp. I'll have to check mine for numbers and let you know. Thanks for watching.
