The lavi was more unstable than the f16. It had a negative static margin compared to the f16s nuetral one. This was due to it having a revolutionary flight control computer which allowed for more complex programing for different flight modes@@WolfeSaber9933

That's the most conspiracy theorist's explanation of things. The truth is fighter planes take a ridiculous amount of money to produce. Money that Canada simply can't justify given its proximity and friendliness to the world's lone superpower and relatively small population.
Also consider that comparing a paper product to a mature existing platform means you're already one generation behind. For example, the F22 Raptor began development in the late 70s. Imagine if you heard about the F22 in the 70s or even the 80s.
It's far cheaper and more advantageous to simply buy an F16.

It wasn't just about funds, or American interference. The final nail in the coffin was that Arrow was intended for a role Canada didn't need anymore. It was bomber interceptor, to intercept Russia planes crossing the Arctic, but with the invention of IMB's this became an outdated type of attack.
This is all speculative, but the Arrow likely would have had the same drawbacks as the F-4, in that it just wasn't designed for dog fighting, and would have faced a serious challenge from Russian fighters that were. There was a massive gap between third gen and forth gen fighters, and the Arrow may well have ben able to punch above its weight class, but as a Canadian, I doubt we would have had the political will to keep designing fighters into the forth, and especially fifth generation.
Sweden is able to build fighters will a similar GDP to Canada, but that's also because they have very specific defense needs, and didn't enter military alliances. Canada, on the other hand is much more involved conflicts abroad, and are part of NATO, so it's just a different situation.

It's a bit odd, but worthy of note, the the 'Kfir' is shown in the background, often in USAF/USN "F-21" livery. It was used in Top-Gun and Red Flag as a "mimic' of "Other Nations" aircraft, and could give most US fighters absolute fits (well, until the F-22 Raptor showed up). The Kfir was a Mirage-5 Delta-wing (not an F-1 nor type-IV) that had extra Flaps, and importantly, fore-mounted Mini-Canards that had quite a range in 'Pitch' change (rumored to also be used in 'roll' by having one "fin" at a different "pitch" for a moment or two), giving it an Edge over even the F-18 in 'tight-turn' gun-fights in the "Upper-Left-Corner", which must've ticked-off the Navy Brass!

I would beg to differ otherwise that they have drawn inspiration or some sold information to them bcoz at the same time Israel and china were in good terms. Anyway talking about J9 which are basically Mig21 just kitted up. Nah dynamics are totally off the chart. And J13 which are basically migs 23. So nah general characteristics are different they had worked with delta wings but placement of it is totally off what others are and look at bends in wings for generating lifts are also placed so similarly. Actually the J-9 is a large set of concepts that keep researching from 1960s. They vary from something like a canard delta J-8 (which is one of the earlist), to the AJ-37-like concept, to something like canard Mig-25 (and in some ways eventually became J-20 today), most of them were cancelled because way too advanced to Chinese aviation industry which just capable of independely production and improving Mig-21. It was officially cancelled as a model development, but the research keep continuing.
(Fun fact, because of the deterioration with Soviet, the engineers in China didn't even get exactly teaching and course of supersonic aerodynamic calculation and design, which they supposed to be teached by Russians. They were literally explored everything from scratch, with the Mig-21 design files on their hand as reference, and recreated the entire knowledge system by their own.)
And finally, in some times about late 1980s, with the inspiration from the Mirage *(yeah, the born on J-10 was not only thanks to IAI, but also Dassault)* , the J-9 concept evolved into something that also looked quite like F-16 (which not surprised because to against F-16 is its goal) and therefore like Lavi.
The next gen fighter project of PLAAF was launched in 1981, almost the same time with Lavi which is in late 1980. The competitor of the J-10 concept was J-13 from Shenyang, which is basically a F-16 build with Mig-21 tech, due to the same and obvious reason. And ppl in Chengdu somehow managed to convinced PLAAF that their design is better than Shenyang's and was more capable for future air combat, so they win.
Remember, that bidding happened *in 1984. Early than the maiden flight of Lavi (in 1986)!*
You can't copied an aircraft that didn't even fly yet, right?
So I think that's more like a coincidence. After they win, during the development of the J-10, the guys in Chengdu get access to the Lavi, found it actually coincidentally looked like the progressing J-9 concept, thinking *"hey why not just take some modern features and systems, and merged them into ours, it will save lots of time and effort than just try everything from the ground!"*
(Carefully looked at details of Lavi and J-10, you'll found the most common aspects of them are in the arrangement of avionic systems, espercially in cockpit. Considering it's the most lacking experience area in which China need for developing a 4th gen fighter, it make sense to just copy something from a design that is more mature than yours.)
and bang, *here comes the J-10*...
    * *EDIT:* Actually the CAC, more specifically the chief designer Song Wencong himself, was perpared if China can't get assistance from Dassault and IAI. The J-10 is a natually unstable plane, just like the F-16, Mirage and Lavi, but this can only happened via the access of fly-by-wire flight control system from Dassault and IAI. (China was actually already developing it, but without assisstance it will be able way more later, probably later than J-10's commission.) If it didn't happened, Song actually designed a delta wing version of J-10 with smaller canards like the Kfir and Mirage V as the temporary backup plan, which is static stable, and therefore didn't need an advanced FBW system to fly, to make sure the J-10 can commissioned in time.

I agree that SOME of the design and engineering aspects of the Chinese aircraft were from their original designers and engineers, however the Chinese do have a strange way of advancing their own aerospace industry, the fact is that industrial espionage is as prevalent as it ever was, and China has little to none respect for patents or intellectual property rights, thus some of their expertise is not always original. Perhaps China should consider not being so secretive and hostile towards the west and try a little harder to engage in cooperation rather than trying to obtain technological advances by less than legitimate means. We in the west keep hearing the rhetoric that the Chinese government puts out about our warmongering and aggression towards China 🇨🇳, but don’t believe everything you hear, the fact is that the free world would only be dragged into a military conflict with China if China overreaches there expansionist demands.

@@liran547 Except China doesn't usually design its own craft. Much of what they have are copies or licenced built variants or copies of existing craft.
It might be a poor knockoff but its still a copy.
the J-10 Based heavily on the LAVI with elements of the J-9 thrown in.
The J35 Based heavily on the F-35 with a bit of the F-22
The J20 Based heavily on the Mig 1.44 and also the F-22
The H20 Based heavily on the B2 Spirit. (We know its based on it due to various drawings and models that's been shown.)
They are all copies or heavily influenced by existing aircraft.
You are correct in that they do have trouble with technology. China for example does not have true advanced tech to create the high capacity chips used in modern aircraft or existing ones such as the Stealth fighter or bombers of US craft. This makes it difficult for them to create sensitive equipment that might be needed in the creation of stealth craft or bombers or the detection of them.
China does not have true advanced stealth tech its mostly just combined or heavy guess work on stuff they stole or acquired. This might change as the J-35 does appear to be better in overall design than the J20.
China has trouble with engine technology which has plagued them for decades. They have been considered weak and underperforming compared to western technology.
They also seem to have trouble with building advanced bombers or long range ones. They only recently produced a civilian airliner that bombed so they maybe experimenting with the creation of long range bombers likely to be based on current long range bomber designs.
The H-20 the B2 knockoff is supposedly faster than the B-2 which is subsonic. The H-20 in question in some descriptions and a model or two appears to have parts of the aircraft prop up to make a tail, likely to help the aircraft remain stable in fast flight or more than likely cause they were not able to thankfully master the tech needed for a flying wing. It would compromise the crafts stealth capabilities.

The Chinese Chengdu Aircraft Company developed the J-10 fighter jet based on the Lavi fighter jet. Before this, the highest level of Chinese fighter jets was the J-8II, which was roughly at the level of the 1960s. China had no technological reserves for modern fighter jets, such as fly-by-wire control, digital instrumentation, data buses, and so on. In addition to the LAVI fighter jet, the accompanying Python 3 air-to-air missiles were also transferred to China. In the Chinese version, these missiles are known as PL-8 and can be seen on many Chinese fighter jets. Now, China's support for Hamas is indeed a development that might have been unexpected in the context of Israel-China relations.

There is a really interesting article about J-10 on sohu (media oulet from China) that I've just read, the article states that Israel had the idea of putting Russian AL-31F engine on Lavi, to accommodate this engine the fuselage was redesigned to be bigger, the wings were changed from a swept trapezoidal wing to bigger pointed delta shape and canards were pushed forward a bit, this redesigning results a jet that had silhouette almost resembling J-10. I take this article with a grain of salt though.

The Lavi was not the "best" jetfighter in the world, it served Israel's needs at the time, and was replaced by the very capable F-16. It was not cost effective for Israel to build. It also had an American powerplant, the Pratt and Whitney 1120, and would have been reliant on US approval for export --- something that would not be granted readily.

American pressure on exports from Israel really only started in the early 2000's after the Phalcon fiasco, so back then as long as Israel could get a non-American engine in the Lavi they wouldn't really have to go through the US legally but there would definitely be pressure, same way the US lobbied the vote to abandon the Lavi.

As a Canadian. The birthplace of the legendary Avro Arrow. I never heard of politics killing the best, way ahead of its time, fighter jet. There still is not a plane that can do what that thing did. Don't waste money developing better planes than the USA. We all might as well just buy new F-15's.

    • @TheHarvHR
      @TheHarvHR 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ah yes, the Avro Arrow. Just like the BAC TSR-2, two aircraft that have a famous reputation. Even today people perpetuate that these aircraft would have been the best thing in the world since sliced bread, I've even heard people say if they entered service that they'd still be serving today.
Truth is there is so much outright lies and a huge amount of mythical 'truths' behind the performance of those two aircraft. Fundementally the age of interceptors was on the way out when the Arrow was being developed as ICBMs were becoming the future and the Arrow wasn't a 'fighter' but rather an expensive Interceptor to defend Canada's skies against Bombers which were being replaced with ICBMs. To say the Arrow is 'way ahead of its time' is true, for a grand total of 2 years until the F-4 Phantom came along.
These aircraft have such a mythos behind them and many people, including you, just perpetuate lies.
      > 'There still is not a plane that can do what that thing did'
And what would that be? Fly fast, fly high, be an interceptor? F-4 could to that. F-14 could do that. F-15 could and still can do that. All of those other aircraft had better multirole capability, and more importantly had a job to do beyond the 60s. F-4 and F-14 both had the real role of attacking bombers that were threatening a carrier fleet. The F-15 can intercept bombers in the imaginary situation that the Soviets still wanted to drop a nuke that way, while also having performance to do other jobs. The Arrow was a one trick pony, but it's trick was pointless. It was a great looking jet, performance was good for the time but nothing that was extraordinarily good. I'd love to know exactly what you claim that the Arrow could do that jets 5 years later couldn't, let alone jets today can't.
The TSR-2 and Arrow myths need to die, the truths about the aircraft having decent to good performance but extensive costs and a loss of primary mission need to be spread to prevent more copium on these machines.
The speed of aircraft development in the 50s and 60s was so rapid that many designs ended up being replaced rather quickly. From 1951-1961 the USAF went from the F-86, to the F-100, to the F-4 Phantom with dozens of other well known aircraft being developed and introduced during that time too, the Arrow simply couldn't keep up.

The Lavi is why the F-22 was never exported to Israel. America's "greatest ally" would have sold the F-22's tech to the Chinese just how they sold the entire Lavi program's technical and engineering data lock stock and barrel for the Chinese to make the J-10. That's not my opinion or speculation, but rather the opinion of more than a few congressmen, defense industry, and intelligence community personnel.

Maybe the Chinese stole it? Just like they stole the F-22 and F-35 plans and built the J-20 and J-31

there is not enough proof from my understanding to that happening it could have been some Chinese stole it as they always steal tech from the USA as well
