      It is cheaper to put every function behind a screen than physical buttons. Imagine having buttons for every app on your smartphone. You should have 100s of buttons. But software functionality is cheaper since it requires only one component- the screen. Software is light work

    I will never understand how companies can think it's safe to replace physical buttons with a touchscreen - it's so dangerous, especially when, like on this car, it forces you to look all the way down to see what's happening!

It should have a twist feature to put the screen in landscape position and the top of the screen should be right at the bottom of the dash so you would only have to slightly look down away from the road to use the screen

    Interesting looking SUV, well styled.
    Some minor criticisms and comments:
    I like the adjustable sat nav screen, which would be even better if it could also tilt towards the driver.
    Because of the borrowed VW platform it’s unfortunate that it hasn’t got a front trunk, particularly given the average sized boot. In Tesla this is a genuinely useful innovation.
    Again, because of the VW platform, it’s also a wide car, which doesn’t help with parking and narrow streets and country lanes.
    250 miles actual range is the minimum acceptable in a modern electric family car. I would hope that the bigger battery version can manage 300 miles plus.

    I much prefer it over an ID3 or 4 but it's really frustrating they haven't put some physical HVAC controls in, which they could have still done on the sliding screen thingy, and also kept the maddening sign of cost cutting which is 3 window switches for 4 windows. But overall looks like it could be good if the range and pricing are competitive.

    • @TejaPeela

      @@tspx23 My specific point was about 3 switches replacing 4, not touchscreens replacing switches. • @TejaPeela
      @TejaPeela ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're going to have a screen regardless, 100% aligned with you it's a cost savings from a materials perspective. If you are just implementing a screen for the first time though, you are going to get killed developing the software and make everything work through the screen.

    Excellent presentation. For me, the lack of a front trunk isn't a complete dealbreaker, but it's a significant deficiency. I've driven the U.S. spec VW id.4. In my opinion it's a second class EV. Considering, in America anyway, they only make suvs and mustangs, it would be nice that they make something from the ground up considering there RND should be huge at this point, either they are cost saving but going down this way or they didn't have the funds to make something of their own either way I don't really like this car.... • @nigel.w
    @nigel.w ปีที่แล้ว +6

    From an aesthetic p-o-v, I think it's a winner. Ride comfort, range and price will ultimately determine its success or failure. The starting price of the Mach-E has risen 9k, and its ride is unacceptable. IMO, Ford needs to reign in its prices to appeal to its traditional customer base and demographic. Ford has repeatedly failed to go upmarket by rebranding or purchasing prestige brands. Now it seems it thinks it can take the Ford brand upmarket and have the likes of the Mach-E branded as Mustang. IMO, Ford needs therapy to accept itself for what it is and be happy and proud. And also to accept its traditional customer base and demographic and be happy and proud to serve them. However, it is probably a smart move to collaborate with VW to share some platforms. I hope this starts sub-40k!

My problem with ford is production. Their is no point in looking at them since you can buy most or any none are available not because they sell. But because they make 50 k or less … I don’t trust their warranty on a gas car let alone on an ev…

      VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat are all part of the VW Group. The MEB platform will eventually be replaced by SSP - the scalable system platform. It would be unwise for all these companies to develop seperate platforms when you can focus your ressources on one project, especially when you're playing in the same team anyways. Audi and Porsche for example are developing the PPE platform for their high end premium cars and have already joined efforts to develop the J1 used for the taycan and e-tron gt. Ford's move to help scale VW's technology does come to a surprise, however they will only use the MEB for about two Ford Models until they have their own platform.(edit: spelling)

      Having done over 10k km in id3/born, I can confidently tell you that the VW window control panel does not in any way stop you from accidentally opening the rear windows; as the switch between rear and front is capacitive, you hit it accidentally when you're trying to find the rockers, meaning you have to do the same process you do now (return windows up) THEN look down, find the capacitive F/R switch, hit it, then try again.
      I promise, this is not a solution to anything.

    Hey Rory great video, but sadly as good as this looks it’s more likely to be fighting against the rivals from the likes of Kia and Hyundai with the Niro and Kona as that’s more the size it sounds, if that’s the case with a range of around 250 miles it’s going to hard for people to say that the Ford is where the money should go to, with both the Korean rivals able to to do far more range and the Tesla model Y being even better on range again, I can’t see this selling well if it’s priced near the £30K-£50K especially if they skimp on range and tech in the lower trim variants.
    It’s a shame as like the EV5 I love the look of the Explorer but, there are better sounding EVs either out there or coming out soon, it will also be competing against the likes of the Fisher Ocean which is due for UK shores in July as the right hand drive models are already in production.
