FUN FACT: the band playing in the video (not Gaslight) is playing the song “The Patient Ferris Wheel” by Gaslight Anthem. I was the actor in the opening scene and the director and I thought it would be a fun homage to the band. :)
This just blew my mind. Life is good
The old man at the end is my grandfather who I love very much.
45 followed by Handwritten is the best 1-2 punch opening of an album I've ever come across, knocks me flat every time.
Add Here Comes My Man and it's my favorite opening 3 songs of any album. If we stick to 2, Great Expectations and The '59 Sound are right there too.
The bridge is one of the best moments in music for me.
"Here, in the dark, I cherish the moonlight
I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night
And it travels from heart, to limb, to pen".
Legendary songwriting.
Agreed
pages plead forgiveness?
1000% agree. Those 3 lines are easily my favourite lyrics ever written.
"There's nothing like another soul that's been cut up the same" is the line that always gets me.
and how many years ive missed you?
Lyrically, this is one of the best songs ever written.
No doubt!!!
* ever handwritten.
This band! My good friend rest his soul introduced me to them in the worst way possible. 4 years ago he sent me a message out of the blue saying he had two tickets to see TGA in London but the person he was going with had dropped out and wanted to know if I wanted to go... At the time I'd never heard of them and couldn't really be bothered to travel all that way for a gig, so I declined. 6 months later sadly he committed suicide.
I felt so guilty like it was my fault for not going with him as to why he did what he did. 4 years later however I am now a massive fan of TGA and everytime I listen to them J get a feeling that he's listening with me.
Rest easy Billy, I'll see you again one day brother!
One of the most heartbreaking/beautiful lyrics of all time: "from my heart to your distress". My heart's breaks with this.
Im a 17 year old who's been stuck back in the 90's, just started listening to bands from my own era and just discovered Gaslight Anthem and all I can say is wow, just amazing Brian Fallon's voice is simply amazing...
You'r right 👍👍
"Here in the dark I cherish the moonlight, I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night, and it travels from heart, to limb, to pen." Probably some of the most beautiful lyrics I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Gaslight Anthem never ceases to amaze me:)
They’re BACK! So stoked for the shows and new music to come
I saw them in San Antonio 2 days ago. They kicked ass!!
It should be a crime this video hasn't won any award. Best music video I've ever seen
I especially like the focus on vinyl records - the best music format 👌🏻
Your comment is the best all these years later. And you’re right. This video needs an award but also the song needs to be added as DLC in Rockband 4. Along with their, hot water music and alkaline trio’s discographies

This band makes me so nostalgic. Ive been listening to them since their first album and its so much more than music for me, its moments in my life. I can literally remember parts of my life and what I was doing when each new album came out and I would listen to the albums on repeat. I would drive around for hours on the backroads of Maine until I was almost out of gas, listening and remembering each word of every song. Their songs were my gaslight anthem. It makes me miss those times so much in my life with their music as my soundtrack. Not very many bands can do what they do for me.
That's what great music can do. You're lucky to live in such a beautiful state.
Nothing better then back road driving with good music
RHCP is that band for me. Gaslight is amazing tho.
you must be young
@@zacatkinson3926 Guess that would depend on who I am around but I think almost 40 is still considered somewhat young, right?

I love that Brian has a Frank Turner badge on his jacket, that's a lovely little touch.
Brian Fallon is one of the best songwriters to come along in a long time, his music. and lyrics makes me feel. Really good stuff!
In the last 8 years I've watched this hundreds of times. The look in these actors/actresses eyes have summed up most of my early relationships in live and though I love life now, kinda miss that young love
You've probs seen it already, but the After The Party music video by The Menzingers touches on a kind of similar theme.
Saw them for the ‘59 Sound 10th anniversary tour last night and they started with this song. No talking before, they came right out on stage and started this song. The crowd went crazy and it was awesome
Man, the emotion in this song. In this video. It just carries. It brings me right back to the day I first discovered this video. I was sitting in the library in my high school, waiting to find an opportunity to ask this girl I really liked to prom. She was surrounded by friends, so I just sat and nervously waited, headphones in, listening to this song and taking glimpses of the video. She left and I lost track of her. I didn't know what to do, so I ate and then probably 30 minutes later walked to my locker where the flowers were stored. And then suddenly, in the completely empty hall, she rounds the corner, alone. I busted open that locker faster than I knew possible. I yelled her name down the hall and she turned and smiled seeing the flowers, knowing this was probably coming. The two of us then walked out together, flowers in her hand. That was years ago. We never did get together. A million things have happened since then, and now l'm with a different wonderful girl I couldnt be happier to call my other half. I dont even think about the girl in this story anymore. But at the time, that day, that hour was one of the best in my life. And this song was there for it. And it's been with me ever since, perfectly capturing the joyous emotion of that moment.
infantryhawk That comment needs a nice little ribbon on it, lovely little story
infantryhawk thats beautiful man!
His smile when he sings "I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night" melts me.
Love this song! Brings back old memories.
I've known the gaslight anthem from years now. I do listen to a lot of music of different styles. Tonight I watched this video for the first time and I cried. Hard. It was strange because the last time I cried for a song and for a music video was ages ago. This song touched me in the deep of my feelings. Other true music lovers will understand me. Thanks TGA.
*In case if you guys didnt know.*
That they made a Short film about this song. It is 15 minutes long, called *Every Word Handwritten.* Basically, the full version of video above. Directed by Kevin Slack, go to his channel to find out.
OMG are these guys good. I'm almost embarrassed to say I just discovered these guys. That being said, I am in my 50's but music does bring generations together. Absolutely Incredible!
+Sky Dog hey mister iam 55 and never misses a single concert the last years-great band-wll see fallon in april in berlin yeah greetings mike
Doesn't matter how old you are....these guys have a beautiful blend of old and new....love them so much and I'm so glad you've discovered them!
+nickusman Enjoy the show, should be a good one... Brian Fallon is so talented, Great Sound. Wonderful Life has been getting quite a bit of air play on the alternative radio in my hometown, the Twin Cities, MN. At the end of the day though, still like the original band that starts it all off. By the way, I really like Germany, been over the several times.
+bendietrees You got that right, Not only do they have an outstanding sound, but they really have something to say.
+Semi_Sweet I've had a great time listening to those great albums. Thanks for the tip on "The Horrible Crowes" and "Painkillers", I've given a listen. Good stuff. Outstanding work.
As you probably know, a big influence of Gaslight Anthem is The Replacements (The Mats).
From Spin magazine...
Brian Fallon of Gaslight Anthem said in a 2009 interview that "without The Replacements, there would be no Gaslight Anthem" and that they were inspired by the song "Left of the Dial."[67]
www.spin.com/2009/04/spin-sessions-gaslight-anthem-unplugged/
Another early band you may want to check out from the Twin Cities is Husker Du whom both Nirvana and Foo Fighter's (particularly Dave Grohl) have mentioned them as major influences...
I just recently started listening to this band. I immediately fell in love with their music. I listen to them first on the way to sports competitions, like a wrestling or track meet, but they put me in the mood for the meet. This band is the best one I have ever heard.
Probably the most underrated band I know
then you don't know alot of bands! this band has 2mil views on just this song...
+Calle Bergqvist I agree but they are honestly one of the best bands around and deserve a lot more recognition
+incredibleguy I dont agree but yes they are better than many bands that have alot more followers.
+Calle Bergqvist In Mexico, where i live... i feel like im the one who know about them. :/
TranceAndIndieLover I feel the same, haven't found followers of TGA where I live.
One day I was riding my bike down Santa Monica Blvd to some shitty audition and I saw Brian Fallon putting money in a parking meter. Best day ever.
Did you go up and talk to him?
+Steven Muldoon No, he was with what I believe was his ex wife. They were just hanging out being normal. Haha I didn't want to bother that.
LOL! I would've fallen off my bike gawking
+bendietrees don't you mean "Fallon" off your bike? .... sorry couldn't resist that one...
One time, I was at Chipotle and I saw Nick Swisher refilling his soda. It was just a normal day.
Really really love this band. Brian Fallon's lyrics really hit you in the most relatable way.
There's a universality to Gaslight and Brian seems to hit a pain in all of us. That's what makes it all tolerable, life that is. Knowing that someone feels like you do.
This! So much, much this.
Truth right here.
from what I get out it of is how powerful music can be. Through depression(Drinking alcohol, the singer with the lighter), Being onstage and feeling overwhelming energy and happiness (which is his love for music and fans), and overtime how that translates into memories and love for a young couple, and eventually the same artist (with the lighter from the start) buying his own music to bring that feeling back.
Holy shit this song is beautiful. The lyrics legit have me in tears.
+Dylan Muir I've been into this band for quite awhile, It's crazy how relate-able to my life and my experiences the lyrics are in a lot of their songs. Fantastic band and a great album. sometimes it has the same effect on me, Cheers man
just wanted to say this... :-)
True. I really like 1930 before knowing it was about his grandmother's struggle with Alzheimer's (and his struggle experiencing the loss), but knowing that, oof.
Yeh Brian is amazing must say...reminds memory the 50's with a punk twist...heaven
I wish I could meet them....they are probably one of my all time favorite bands. Brian just writes hauntingly beautiful.
For about a YEAR I would hear this song while at the gym and never seemed to have my phone on me to google it. Today, the SAME damn thing happened so, I kept repeating one line to myself "Every word hand-written" ... the min I got to the locker room I plugged those lyrics and google - had no connection lol ... once in the car ... BINGO! I'm surprised that this song is SEVEN years old! :) My year quest - solved today on March 15, 2019!
Better late than never.
No other band can give me the chills as easily as these guys. They're on their way to a long and successful career.
Phew. Brian Fallon is lyrical genius if ever there was one.
A genuine storyteller.
Going to see them in Philly this summer. One of the most underrated bands of the last 17 years.
how have i not listened to this band before today? I'm a punk and metal-head all day, but damn this gives me the feels.
It does that doesn't it💘
I think everyone is a but confused..
The young guy at the start playing in the band flicking the lighter plays a gig and points at the young teenage couple while he's playing.
The young girl then buys her boyfriend a copy of the album as a gift before he goes to war.
After he goes to war the boys dad gives the album to the kid across the road as a gift who then sells it many years later.
The young guitarist from the start then stumbles across it, his album and buys it as an old man... still flicking the lighter.
He doesn't know the amazing history of that particular record which was all initiated by him at the gig in the first place
I think the part you are missing is that the boy who went to war probably died because most likely he went and fought in the Vietnam war. Also, is the reason why his father gave his old stuff away. He gave them away in hopes the kid would enjoy the music as much as his son did. Sometimes life does't turn out as you imagine.
Yeh absolutely. Spot on
Thank you grampa.
I'm so confused
Thanks for this. I like to listen to this at work, so I've only seen bits and pieces of the video. It makes a lot of sense. I think the most heartbreaking moment is when the sweet young kid who gets the record from the dad turns into an obviously depressed and disheveled adult who's probably going to use the money from the record to buy a sub at a gas station and eat it alone in front of a 2 Broke Girls rerun that he's seen so many times it's not even funny anymore.
I have maybe listened to this song without getting chills. But I sure can't remember a time.
😂 👍🏽 Gaslight is chills!!!
A total Masterpiece!! Music and lyrics. Incredible. Just incredible!! One of the best song ever in music History
Maybe it just me or i'm just old, but music videos still have a place that grabs you.
Saw them live, one of the best experiences in my life.
This is so underrated for such a beautiful song and a great band wish they were more popular
It's so beautiful to see how friendship of guys from Gaslight Anthem makes masterpieces like these video and song.
punk rock poet at his best..this and '45' sends shivers down my spine ..even at 39
I get chills every time I watch this. This is just truly perfect.
Here, in the dark, I cherish the moonlight
I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night
And it travels from heart, to limb, to pen
❤
❤
This to this day is one of my favorite songs and definitely my favorite music video ever.
I could watch this over and over again. It hits on a level so deep and honest. Not always a place that I like to be but this is by far the most beautiful way to find it.
There is just something about this band that hits you in the soul
this video gave me chills the first time I'd seen it when Handwritten came out, and it still has the same effect on me to this day.
Man, still one of my all time favorite songs and band. He even is great on his singles.
Repeat over and over.. Love this song and video makes me think of someone very special to me and whom i'll always love but lost. This gets me every time i watch. So there ya have it! I know I'm still waiting to heal but live each day anyway thankful I'm alive and seeing the beauty in it all.
This is now my favourite Gaslight song by a long way, want to belt it out every time it comes on! Such a powerful chorus too!
always makes me shiver. stunning song from a stunning band.
6 years later and this video still gets me. Love the song, love the band, and I'm glad Brian is still pumping out tunes.
Still one of the most vivid and beautiful songs I’ve ever heard
From concept to execution I think this is one of the best music videos around. It tells a story in four and a half minutes.
Hell, it tells a million stories.
Superb work all round
Did you know, that they made a Short film about this song?
it 15 minutes long, called Every Word Handwritten. Basicly, the full version of video above.
Still the best ever. The song on its own is already amazing, but paired with this video it just becomes the epitome of perfect. There's nothing even remotely close to being as good as this.
Moving On - James.
The Mezingers - After The Party Video ...
Not the same type of music but the 1975 - robbers. Awesome video.
Boiled Frogs - Alexisonfire
His acoustic version?
2021 Gaslight Anthem is easily in the top 5 out right now. what? period....
I think the song is about the undiscovered life that a piece of music can have.
All over the world people listen to these songs, yet everyone has its own connection to it (the moment and place you heard it first, the person who made you discover it, the fun/troubles a song can get you through, the strenght/comfort you search in a song,...).
It's about the power of music to bring people together yet all those people give a single piece of music a thousand different meanings.
Man, one of the only music videos that'll bring on the waterworks. Too damn good of a song and video.
That NJ neighborhood brings me back. Nothing like an east coast summer!
First saw these guys in 2009 at Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park in London, England supporting The Boss then saw them headlining their own gig at Brixton also in London. Love em and can't wait to see them again!
I just found this a few days ago but have probably played it more than 10 times already. Only just noticed that the old guy at the end is the young musician from the start and he's picking up his own record. Saw him flicking the lighter and was like 'ooooooooooooooooooooh'. xD
I keep noticing more things the more I play/watch this. Totally didn't get that the Tyler kid was joining the army until I noticed the weird bag he was holding. And from that realising that he probably died which is why the Dad gave the record away...
Such a good band dude! Check out their albums. His solo stuff is great too!
Thank you Fallon for making me cry again.
I watch this video like once a day. It's amazing. The sparklers are magic. The ending is cool too.
this video took a great song and made legendary. Benny's vision on the video was next level. I will love this song til the day I die.
It took me so many years to finally appreciate the depth to this amazing song.
This music video is so well directed. I got tears in my eyes at the end. Gaslight, you are amazing.
This song actually has dislikes. .that's terrible.
This song is genius. A masterpiece.
the gaslight anthem saved my life.
after my attempt at suicide struggling with depression I was allowed one cd in the mental bin...my mother brought me a copy of the '59 sound.
I listened everyday. I'm back on my feet.
gaslight brought passion back to music...
They make it art.
it means something again...
Thank you Brian.
Thank you
***** if you're defining that as something that is pop rock may I point out that that is exactly how many iron maiden songs start, are you calling them pop rock?
Why's the world so fucking cold
Stay strong mate, the world is a better place with you not without you
The gaslight anthem saved my life.
after my successful attempt at suicide I was allowed one cd in my coffin... my funeral director brought me a copy of the 59 sound.
But then I realized I don't have a cd player six feet under. And my phone didn't have a signal. So i resurrected myself to listen to it.
I'm back on my feet.
Thank you Brian. (Brian's the name of my funeral director).
Why does this video make me cry!? It’s soooo good
This music video is actually the best thing to come of the Internet it’s a god damn movie when you realize it’s the guy from the start ❤️❤️❤️😭
This is definitely one of the best stories I have ever seen told in just four and a half minutes. Truly breathtaking. I hope to meet Brian some day.
One of the best music videos ive ever seen honestly
Agreed...I'm not usually one for music videos, but this one hits the mark, and my soul...
fire lord zuko likes tgla omg. all hail zuko
It is my destiny to capture the Avatar, Brian Fallon.
haha classic zuko
I see these fancy million dollar videos with their fancy effects, but they have no soul. All mouth and no trousers as we say in England.
But this tells a heartwarming story without the bullshit.
seeing them in a week. so stoked
This band understands the power of music and are not afraid to delve into every single emotion it can evoke. Very impressed.
I'm here STOKED on this new album. The new 2 singles have been so good. Welcome back Gaslight Anthem, we have all missed you much. ❤🫱🏻🫲🏼
this song was there for me when i found tje love of my life and when i lost it
Love Gaslight Anthem....YET ANOTHER GREAT BAND FROM NEW JERSEY!
This will always be one of my favourite music videos, still get goosebumps watching it everytime, the gaslight guys are top.
This is a small detail but I love that part where the gears are grinding and show the record being made during a guitar riff. The timing is pretty much perfect. In fact the entire video is perfect.
I can't believe this video doesn't have more views. The whole things is just so, so powerful.
this is beyond beautiful. musically AND that video.
Simply incredible songwriting... This song is new to me, and I love it.
one of the greatest songs evr
Gaslight Anthem should do new music!! Always a great song
Still listening to this still love it as much as the first time I heard it
I cannot believe that I've only just gotten into TGA, I have missed out on such amazing music for such a long time. First song I heard of theirs I instantly fell in love with, then another, and another. Incredible.
New Jersey rock is some of the best rock music out there. So much passion in the garden state.
Even the song he is playing at the beginning of the video is good! Best line is I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night and it travels from heart to limb to pen..
Thank you Landon! I was the actor in the opening scene. I wrote that little guitar riff the night before shooting that scene not thinking that they would keep it. :)
"There's nothing like a soul that's been cut up the same"
That line hits me so hard.
Geez, man! Every time I watch this music video, I'm in tears... no matter how I try, the build-up just gets me.
This song and video plays with my feelings!
Love The Gaslight Anthem.
Absolutely love this song and band! They need to get back together. They are way to good!!!
Ryan Jackson actually they are getting together!
I've seen this a million times and it still brings tears to my eyes.
This is easily one of the best records released in the last decade. I love The Gaslight Anthem so much.
First heard this song the other day. It's been stuck in my head ever since and led me to buy the cd...well done gaslight anthem well done
I saw them live, and it was the best concert I've ever seen.
One of the best shows i have ever seen.
Gaslight and Alkaline Trio. 2008 i think was the year.
I am so jealous....I woulda killed to see that show
I saw them live last month, it was incredible. His voice sounded great, the lead guitar was crystal clear, the whole thing was great.
this song really tugs on the old heart strings 1:58 that smile shows so much emotion. so glad I got into this band!
