    Lyrics:
Well I wonder which song they're gonna play when we go
I hope it's something quiet and minor and peaceful and slow
When we float out into the ether into the everlasting arms
I hope we don't hear Marley's chains we forged in life
'Cause the chains I've been hearin' now for most of my life
And the chains I've been hearin' now for most of my life
Did you hear the '59 sound
    Coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattlin' chains
    In the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir
When they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song
    One last time?
And I wonder, were you scared when the metal hit the glass?
See I was playing a show down the road when your spirit left your body
And they told me on the front lawn, I'm sorry I couldn't go
But I still know the song and the words and her name and the reasons
And I know 'cause we were kids and we used to hang
And I know 'cause we were kids and we used to hang
Did you hear the '59 sound
    Coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattlin' chains
    In the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir
When they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song
    One last time?
    Young boys, young girls
    Young boys, young girls
Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night
Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night
Well they ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night
Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night
Did you hear the '59 sound
    Coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattlin' chains
    In the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir
When they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song
    One last time?
    Young boys, young girls
    Young boys, young girls

this piece of music was on my son's playlist when he performed. There is also a video of him performing this in front of a camera. And I had never really listened to the words...when my 20 year old son passed away, I kept hearing pieces of this song in my mind, and the number 12...so I asked 12 of his musician friends of different genre's if they would perform this piece as the last set at his funeral as they carried his coffin away...at that point, that very point, I heard the words...and it was the best piece and fitting for the final goodbye. RIP Traiale Jordan (and a huge thank you to Gaslight Anthem's that wrote such an heart felt piece of music...and also a huge thank you to all the musician's in Plymouth, Devon, United Kingdom for doiung this piece of mysic justice as they helped me say goodbye to their friend, my son xxxx forever grateful

My cousin, who was pretty much a sister to me, died in a car accident back in December and this song describes how I feel so perfectly. It's been almost a year to the date now and I still listen to this song whenever I really miss her. I really hope that she wasn't scared when it happened... I often find myself thinking of her last conscious moments on Earth and if she did hear her favourite song one last time.

People you love who have left this life are never really gone when their names are still spoken.
That line, "Did you hear your favorite song one last time?" really resonates with so many people. Brilliant lyrics. I often wonder if the ones we lost did get to hear their song. When I check out, I hope it is Gaslight Anthem - any song really.
      Be well...

My son's mom was killed in a car/train accident in January. We had been split up since before we knew she was pregnant. We co-parented, but we stayed apart because we didn't get along. We were total fire and gasoline. She had struggled with a lot of things, but in the last few months before her death, she had really balanced out, and was the best I'd ever seen her. The last Sunday I dropped my son off to her, I almost told her that I was proud of her, but I chickened out, because we seldom said nice things to each other. I never knew she'd be dead the next day.
I am now a single dad to our amazing little boy. He is the best parts of both his mom and I, and none of our bullshit. I have always loved this song, but now when I hear it, I think of her, gone at just 26, way too young, and I hope that she knew love and peace in her final moments.
No matter what you're history or drama with someone, don't withhold love or praise from them if they really deserve it. You might think you have forever to tell someone the things that matter, but you may not. The last time you saw them, might really be the last time you ever see them. It might the last time they see you. Tell them you love them. Tell them you're proud. Speak your heart when the moment is there, because trust me, you'll spend your life wishing you had. Much love

I haven't heard this song or even thought about it in about 10 years. I just left a memorial for a friend that passed. All I've thought about all day while being there was this song.
I'm now sitting at a barstool at the bar I work at, alone, and just playing this on repeat. It hurts a lot, but I finally get to sit alone and think of him and place the song that fits.

Every Gaslight Anthem song I hear fills me with overwhelming nostalgia. My faintest memories glow in a powerful light of divine beauty. Times gone by that I don't even remember call me with a siren's song. I remember everything as it once was, in glory far surpassing reality, and I vow never to forget. Because in the end, memories are all we have.

He was a steel worker for 45 years and he died of a heart attack at that plant, my Mom heard the ambulance as it took him to the hospital. I was 16 my brother Dave came and got me from school. Today we learned that a young guy of 21 who our eldest son used to play rugby with is now dead after a road accident last weekend " Young boys... Young girls... And they ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night" are very very hard lines to listen to. Rest in peace Jack

I remember listening to this song over the Summer when a friend of mine passed away back in August of 2019. It sucks when the good die young especially at age 19. But thanks to this song I'll remember the memories I had when my friend asked me questions about what I did back in High School and many other things.

Like many, this song strikes a chord with me with a list loved one. My aunty M who was a force of nature , is who I'm reminded of when I hear this song. She encouraged my education, got me into shakespear and Dickens but also loved rock music (particularly queen) . I think she would have really enjoyed Fallon's lyricism here and his reference to A Christmas Carol here.

This song holds a special meaning to me. My dad died in 2009 at the age of 59. He was survived by his mom (my grandmother) and watching her deal with her son's death was as heartbreaking as losing my dad. She ended up in a hospital right after the funeral, but manage to gather strength to continue living. She died in 2018 at the age of 87:
"Did you hear the '59 sound
    Coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattlin' chains
    In the hospital walls?"

Well, I wonder which song they're gonna play when we go.
I hope it's something quiet and minor and peaceful and slow.
When we float out into the ether, into the Everlasting Arms,
I hope we don't hear Marley's chains we forged in life.
'Cause the chains I been hearing now for most of my life,
The chains I been hearing now for most of my life.
Did you hear the fifty-nine Sound coming through on grandmother's radio?
Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song one last time?
And I wonder were you scared when the metal hit the glass?
See, I was playing a show down the road
When your spirit left your body.
And they told me on the front lawn.
    I'm sorry I couldn't go,
But I still know the song and the words and her name and the reasons.
And I know 'cause we were kids and we used to hang
I know 'cause we were kids and we used to hang
Did you hear the fifty-nine sound coming through on grandmother's radio?
Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song one last time?

2018 The great thing about an AMAZING song is that it doesn't matter what year it is. It always matters, it always hits you hard. That's why it's a good song. Lost my Dad over 10 years ago, when he died I hadn't talked to him for 18 months out of stubbornness and stupidity. It still cuts me inside like a hot knife. But I know he loves me, and I love him. But damn if this catchy ass song doesn't make me wanna cry instead of dance.
