The ironic thing is that some of these scenes are censored even in the Japanese version when compared to the original manga. For example, Mai's punishment in the manga had nothing to do with her memories; that hourglass was actually filled with flesh-eating scarabs.
*"These Scenes Were All Sent To The Shadow Realm."* Ah, I love what you did there, and there's a reason for it as well... did you know the Yu-Gi-Oh manga was actually a gore fest before they made it into a kid's cartoon?! Hell the Yugioh Duel monster's manga was still gruesome and Bandit Keith had it easy compared to the manga where peagus turn Keith's fingers into a gun and made him shot himself. Hell Even Peagus die in duel monster's manga.
The most awesome moment from season 0 for me was where the death row convict took Teá and Yugi as a hostage, blindfolding Teá and making Yugi serve booze and a cigarette to him at gunpoint. The convict threatened to execute her, and thus Atem came out. Thus Yugi played a lethal game where they had to remain perfectly still but could only use one digit of their one hand to kill the other. The convict was pouring his drink at the start. Words cannot do justice for the imagery of this next moment. Obviously the gunman chose his index finger to pull the trigger, Yugi selected his thumb to flick the lighter. Before the gun was fired, Yugi lights his cigarette as the original demand was. Foolishly the convict allowed him to do this, staying his trigger finger for a few moments more. It gave Yugi the chance to place the still lit lighter on the convicts hand. The convict was by now still pouring the highly flammable alcohol and was being soaked. He couldn't fire the gun lest the recoil topple the lighter and light the deathtrap. Shocked his lit cigarette fell out of his mouth and Atem snatched Tea from the convicts panicking state moments before said convict is incinerated.
In the first episodes, the pharaoh burned the guy that kidnaped Tea alive, made the bully of the school burn his hands on a grill during the festival, and I think let somebody die from hypothermia inside a giant meat freezer so.... That was not for kids AT ALL.
Yeah, like during the fantasy RPG game where Yugi and the others are trapped in the game by Yami Bakura. At one point, regular Bakura takes over Bakura's hand and starts typing in a new character and other things. At which point, Bakura takes the possessed hand and impales it on the sharp roof of the castle prop, resulting in a lot of gore. There's also the haunted roller coaster earlier in the manga where Yugi and the others are trapped on a roller coaster in electric chairs. If they make any sound, the chairs will electrocute them. The guy in charge of the 'ride' is Kaiba's butler and is also strapped in a chair. He uses all sorts of things to get them to make sounds, from tickling to loud jump scares. Tristan though had to bring his little nephew along and he wasn't strapped in. He was a little perv and liked Tea for perverted reasons. Anyway, he went and crawled into the butler's lap and literally pooped in the butler's lap. They even show the turds in the guy's lap. The butler screams and is electrocuted. In fact that whole arc of the manga is pretty dark and grisly come to think of it.
i hate Yu-Gi-Oh! now, finding out that "The Shadow Realm" was essentially Limbo or Hell really killed that lore aspect that kept me into it, this is one time i was in blissful ignorance...
@@SpikeTheWolf the Shadow Realm was created to avoid direct references to death. But the loser of (or someone who cheated at) a Shadow Game would suffer a Penalty Game where they'd generally suffer an ironic punishment (if Atem initiated it) or twisted the screws deeper if it was Bakura or Marik.
Let's keep this train going In the manga, the giant magical hourglass Mai got trapped in wasn't filled with magical sand. It was filled with live scorpions. Seriously.
4Kids: "better remove those guns for the safety of preteen American children" Preteen American Kids: "I bought my first assault rifle at the local arcade using tickets I won playing skee ball"
American cartoon censorship was always so random, Reboot wasn't allowed to break windows or depict GOOD female characters as having breasts (not until changed channels), Spider man the animated series wasn't allowed to throw punches (except two times) or use real bullets, but Batman the animated series airing on the same network at the time could do both..and also depict realistic bodies (until moved to kids WB and art style also changed), and a thousand or more examples I could go on forever with.
*"Whoever Loses The Duel Would Get Their Legs Violently Chopped Off By A Buzzsaw."* I wish they didn't give this adaptation to 4Kids because I'd see that! 😕
*"It Definitely Makes The English Dub Memorable One Way Or Another."* You can say that again... just a bunch of guys pointing their fingers at you, nothing threatening here lol! 😂😂😂
One of the darkest in yugioh to me was in the manga, where we see mariks past on how he became a psycho as a kid, and the anime didnt show it, but in the manga marik cut off the skin on his father back which had the marking of the tomb keepers oath, and threw the skin on Odion
@@silenthero2795 What manga of Pokemon were you reading, because I've read several Pokemon manga and I've never seen any battles like that. Also Pokemon's a video game series, not a manga. The manga is just an adaptation and non-canon.
In the manga Mai's punishment was that there were flesh eating scarabs/bugs above her that would slowly fall into her half of the glass and slowly eat her alive
@@chaosyeshua1137 yeah I remember being so confused when I first watched it "I summon dizzy tiger" "Dizzy tiger? Why is he dizzy?" "He's dizzy because of hot sauce" That never made sense in the dub
How Mariks father dies - *Japanese version* stabbed to death with the Millennium rod *English version* thrown against wall and banished to Shadow Realm *Manga* back tattoo skinned and thrown unto Odion (as some kind of recycled acceptance ceremony)
If you think about it, Yami Yugi in the original manga is basically Jigsaw, he challenges people he considers unworthy of life to horrifying shadow games which results in insanity or death. The creator wanted to take a more horror themed route until the unexpected success of the trading card chapter with Kaiba. 4kids literally tried to sugarcoat Saw and present it to kids XD
funny thing is some of these were actually changed twice from the manga to the Japanese version then to to English dub. like in the manga with Mai's punishment its not sand in the hourglass with her its scarabs that fall down and eat her alive.
When I was a kid, the loser of the double duel would die. Dying sends you to the shadow realm. Shadow realm meant you're dead. This situation didn't really hide itself very well lol
remember in the manga instead of losing her memories mai was forced to feel pain everytime her monsters are destroyed. just like the duel with joey. but with a bit of a plot twist she was forced to hallucinate mariks decapitation and instead of being trapped in a pyramid of sand, shes trapped in the pyramid of bugs, that is unless yugi beat marik, the bugs will eat her alive
Say what you want about the shadow realm. It makes more sense to me to say "your soul was trapped in another dimesion and we freed you" than "you died and we played a children's card game to bring you back to life."
That's not how it worked, though. Nobody who died was ever brought back to life. Those who were rescued, like Yugi's grandpa, were never killed in the first place but did actually have something mystical happen to them, or they were just captured and imprisoned in some conventional way. The dub just used the "Shadow Realm" as a catch-all explanation for all those kinds of events.
Actually 8:40 I'm pretty sure the English cards for Destiny board came out before the Dub aired. So it might of been whoever was in charge of editing the TCG cards.
“To dub” means “to change the sounds and speech on a film or television programme, especially to a different language” - Cambridge Dictionary. It’s erroneous to say “Japanese dub” because the original language was in Japanese. It was so grating to hear you say “Japanese dub” over and over again. And Americans sure are overprotective of their kids. If Japanese kids can handle it, why can’t Americans?
Took the dub comment right out of my mouth. Plus 90% of the kids watching would have been able to handle the subject material, but 4kids entertainment thought kids where too stupid to understand subjects like death. They where the absolute worst company to see acquire an anime, as you knew that it WAS going to be butchered. You just didn't know how much...
@@MegaBat91 4Kids thought kids were too stupid to understand that other countries existed and had their own food, lol. Hence the infamous "jelly donut" from Pokemon XD
@@hexamael9458 That was another problem with 4Kids. They seemed to erroneously think that all cartoons were meant for children to be the primary demographic. While this was mostly true of Western animation at the time (although even then they often had more complex writing and mature themes than 4Kids ever allowed to be shown), they failed to realize that a good portion of anime even back then was designed for teenage or even adult audiences. I wonder what their reactions would've been if you could've taken them forward in time to show them an episode of "Family Guy" or "South Park."
It's Funny That The 4K!DS Dub Of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Doesn't Want To Show Guns To Kids Despite The Fact That Most Kid Shows Like Batman: The Animated Series And Looney Tunes Have Guns In Them.
11:57 Cops: LET'S GO KIVA! ON YOUR FEET! MR. PEGASUS WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A FEW WORDS WITH YOU! His mind: Oh crap he has his finger armed and ready to do a objection. I'm gonna *_yeet myself with the package_*
Duel Monsters is the original Yu-Gi-Oh animated series? What!? Duel Monsters wasn’t the original Yu-Gi-Oh series, Yu-Gi-Oh 1998 was. It was adapted by Toei and it was never dubbed into English. In it Yami goes around challenging people to games in which if they lose they get killed in brutal ways. Essentially when Yugi’s friends or someone he cares about gets hurt, Yami will go around and kill the people that caused the pain. Dueling was not the main premise here, but rather it got introduced as one of “Yami’s Games” later in the show.
There was also some kind of vision in Yami's duel with Dartz, right before he pulled out the card that Pegasus gave him. It was very mitigated in the American version, since the original had Yami falling down underwater naked.
Kids needed to be exposed to that type of stuff. You know what's ironic? That fact that kids over in Japan could handle the though better than us American Kids😞 and that says alot
My favorite edit is that 4Kids edited most (if not all) of the bathroom references. You remember the night on the ship where Téa and Tristan were spying on Yugi, and Téa couldn’t sit still because it was cold, then Tristan points to the side and says, “In another few hours the sun will rise.”? Well, in the original Japanese version Téa was squirming because she was bursting to go and Tristan suggests she pees off the side of the ship.
I remember watching the entire series after getting outta high school bcuz...i had more time hahaha. But with the quarantine in 2020 ive learned all the horrible changes
Yeah, it's a real eye opener. It's so dark asf that after 2020 is over I don't want to hear that "aNiMe Is FoR kIdS" anymore. Anime is definitely NOT 4Kids. At least most of them.
The offscreen brutal deaths, maybe, but gun play and showing people almost dying brutally but ultimately being saved were fair play at the time with stuff like the DC superhero cartoons. It would've been better off airing on a cable channel like Cartoon Network in the first place, though.
Ah, yes. The finger guns. I remember watching on TV as a child and being like, "It looks like they're holding guns?" so good job, 4kids. You did your best, I suppose???
Out of all the entries of this list, #4 is the only one I was unaware of before this video. Also, for those interested: Valon's reason of being in (juvenile) prison: Actual: Brutally used a pipe against a local gang he believed burned the church, that their boss bought, that killed a caring nun that raised him, because they laughed about the fire. Dub: Omitted entire scene into not even specifying his crime. Rafael: Actual: His parents and two younger siblings died in the shipwreck, his surviving relatives took his dad's inheritance and disassociate Rafael, have no real friends because strangers just want his fame, and went with Dartz (the man that later reveled to have started the tidal wave) to a graveyard and found his two younger siblings' skulls that confirmed that his family's deaths. Dub: His family surviving the shipwreck, but just forgotten about him long after his rescue.

I swear I absolutely love when you guys make a Yu-Gi-Oh video. Way to go Ashley.
Now everyone should start shaking on their feet when someone finger points.
LMAO 😂😂😂😂 ☠️☠️☠️☠️
i hate Yu-Gi-Oh! now, finding out that "The Shadow Realm" was essentially Limbo or Hell really killed that lore aspect that kept me into it, this is one time i was in blissful ignorance...
Sooo its not real??
@@SpikeTheWolf the Shadow Realm was created to avoid direct references to death. But the loser of (or someone who cheated at) a Shadow Game would suffer a Penalty Game where they'd generally suffer an ironic punishment (if Atem initiated it) or twisted the screws deeper if it was Bakura or Marik.
In the manga, Marik actually skinned his father alive
Let's keep this train going
In the manga, the giant magical hourglass Mai got trapped in wasn't filled with magical sand.
It was filled with live scorpions. Seriously.
In the manga pegasus dies
@@JanitoRiceMeister Holy shit for real?
@@jonathanmartin-lof2941 damn
I think skinning alive is more gruesome death than an instant death itself
4Kids: "better remove those guns for the safety of preteen American children"
Preteen American Kids: "I bought my first assault rifle at the local arcade using tickets I won playing skee ball"
*The Finger Guns should be the next Redraw trend on Twitter.*
I’m not in Twitter
A lot of this I was aware of, however that surprise knife in the Millennium Rod was news to me.
That’s Some grade A voice acting at 2:50 LOL
Yeah but in a good way
Is hilariously bad
Dynasty warriors 3 vibes
JAPAN: America, stop ruining our anime!
AMERICA: Japan, stop killing people over a kids' game!
Wasnt even supposed to be a Kids game IN the first Place. Like they literally Gas to invent a whole new story line to Make it kid friendly 🤣
*something controversial happened*
Dub: *shadow realm*
When I first watched the First Season, I thought the energy discs were suspicious. I slowly realized that those were originally Buzz saws.
Kind of weird how those discs were aimed to hit your legs to send your mind to the shadow realm
Or even why they had to be shaped like buzzsaws
PatZalatoris Just don’t question it.. it definitely makes sense
Yeah that one was such a stretch.
@@KingOfGaymes yeah I'll try that!.....huh, now jaden switching from elemental heroes to neo spacians makes sense now
OH NO THEY "CAPTURED" MIKEY
CVIT LOL
😂😂😂
YOU BASTARDS!
I know everyone is going to shit on the dub but I loved it. Regardless of how much it changed from the original.
💪
Truth be told, the voice actors were fine (and excellent in Dan Green's case). It's just the censorship that jumps between reasonable to ridiculous.
Japan: *object kills person*
USA: Let's just send them to the Shadow Realm
Wow, I'm actually impressed with Watchmojo on this one. They actually did their research and picked very good moments of Yu-gi-oh's censorship.
*"Whoever Loses The Duel Would Get Their Legs Violently Chopped Off By A Buzzsaw."*
I wish they didn't give this adaptation to 4Kids because I'd see that! 😕
I mean you can see it on crunchyroll, they got subbed yugioh on there 👍
@@KingOfGaymes OR you could just watch it through ILLEGALLY STREAMING SITES.

You can say that again... just a bunch of guys pointing their fingers at you, nothing threatening here lol! 😂😂😂
Never knew most of this! I know you guys could make another list like this!!! That would Be 🔥🔥🔥
One of the darkest in yugioh to me was in the manga, where we see mariks past on how he became a psycho as a kid, and the anime didnt show it, but in the manga marik cut off the skin on his father back which had the marking of the tomb keepers oath, and threw the skin on Odion
That because manga are more explicit than the anime and it is one of the reasons why I prefer manga over the anime.
The same with Pokemon. The battles there are like massacres with limbs and body parts flying. It is nowhere near what the anime has shown.
@@silenthero2795 What manga of Pokemon were you reading, because I've read several Pokemon manga and I've never seen any battles like that. Also Pokemon's a video game series, not a manga. The manga is just an adaptation and non-canon.
Please do a GX video.
Also mai’s punishment was also like that in the manga but with bugs and other insects instead of sand.
In the manga Mai's punishment was that there were flesh eating scarabs/bugs above her that would slowly fall into her half of the glass and slowly eat her alive
I remember GX changing sake to hot sauce.
@@chaosyeshua1137 yeah I remember being so confused when I first watched it
"I summon dizzy tiger"
"Dizzy tiger? Why is he dizzy?"
"He's dizzy because of hot sauce"
That never made sense in the dub
@@erusean8492 ikr, if anything shouldn't the tiger be burning his mouth and be sweating?
the manga, Mai is being eaten alive by the scarab after her duel with Yami Marik
Yami Marik also straight up tortures and skins his father back in the manga.
@@bronzin1445 and trying to cover Odion back with it
lol doz finger guns no matter how many times i see it its still hilarious
The shadow realm used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid...Pegasus, Marik and evil Bakura also!
How Mariks father dies -
*Japanese version* stabbed to death with the Millennium rod
*English version* thrown against wall and banished to Shadow Realm
*Manga* back tattoo skinned and thrown unto Odion (as some kind of recycled acceptance ceremony)
I wonder how the light novel puts it. If there is one.
*Abridged Version* gleefully stabbed to death while singing a morbid song about his own death.
I think Number one is gonna be The Shadow Realm
WatchMojo Number One The Finger Gun
A surprise to be sure but a welcome one
I'm more surprised that one of them wasn't that they changed it so that the cards didn't look like the real ones
They should have the uncensored versions of Yu-Gi-Oh on Blu-Ray.
[US of A] not OK : guns in cartoons/games "for kids"
[also US of A] OK : kids having real gun
Guess since fictional cartoon never dies so it is okay except it is fictional human story 🤔
Cop: *point*
Top 10 scariest moments in kids shows
Well once again canada didnt give af cause I seen all these episodes growing up in english 😂🤣
funny thing is some of these were actually changed twice from the manga to the Japanese version then to to English dub. like in the manga with Mai's punishment its not sand in the hourglass with her its scarabs that fall down and eat her alive.
2:30
Don't forget he killed him by skinning his back of the tattoo, I'm serious google it.
Then slapped it on Rishids back like “Here ya go bud you’re a tomb keeper now”
That only happen in the manga. I wish for a yugioh reboot that follow the manga
Watch Mojo, great video! Enjoy your Sunday!💯🙏👐
The manga is even more dark then japnese version of the anime
Darker comparison:
Manga>anime original>anime dub
When I was a kid, the loser of the double duel would die. Dying sends you to the shadow realm. Shadow realm meant you're dead. This situation didn't really hide itself very well lol
8:29 digimon evolve, but here, Yugi Evolve.. 😅
Off to the Shadow Realm you go.
the mugger in the anime is technically censored in the Japanese version (he dies in the manga)
Guys my dad got killed by a finger gun send help
remember in the manga instead of losing her memories mai was forced to feel pain everytime her monsters are destroyed. just like the duel with joey. but with a bit of a plot twist she was forced to hallucinate mariks decapitation and instead of being trapped in a pyramid of sand, shes trapped in the pyramid of bugs, that is unless yugi beat marik, the bugs will eat her alive
3:56 Why show the same Dark Magician Girl clip twice if they're both the censored versions?
Anime logic
The blade in the Rod was so obvious even as a kid. The Kaiba scene gave me goosebumps as a kid lmao.
You guys really should just do a Top 10 Anime Moments Censored by 4Kids.
Can you really restrict that to ten? lol
To be fair, I don't really understand why the millenium rod has a hidden blade to begin with when it already has magic powers.
Literally just started watching yugioh.... how did you know I wanted yugioh content huh?
Also in the Japanese version the Barrel Dragon has real cannons instead of nerf guns
To be fair, the target audience for Yu-Gi-Oh in Japan was teenagers. 4Kids decided to market it towards younger kids.
@@afrokitty2222 that is so true, they just thought kids where dumb in general. 4kids was so awful...
After watching Yu-Gi-Oh abridged series, I couldn't take the 4kids dub seriously anymore 🤣

The one thing I liked better in the English dub compared to the Japanese dub was Yami Bakura's voice.
English sounds like evil and devious, the Japanese voice is good but not for Bakura?? I just hear a creepy woman and it doesn’t fit him
@@KingOfGaymes fun fact, Japanese voice is Ash Ketchum.
@@KingOfGaymes Agreed.
Number 9 was censored in both versions regardless, from what I heard
I was, compared to the original manga, but totally different levels of censorship
Death? Big no no. Eternal damnation and suffering in the Shadow Realm? That's fine.
I prefer my yu-gi-oh less dark please but dont censure the cards please
There was also some kind of vision in Yami's duel with Dartz, right before he pulled out the card that Pegasus gave him. It was very mitigated in the American version, since the original had Yami falling down underwater naked.
Kids needed to be exposed to that type of stuff. You know what's ironic? That fact that kids over in Japan could handle the though better than us American Kids😞 and that says alot
No. It's all because of the PC culture in America that's still going on TODAY. Bruh I was watching gory shit when I was a kid.
"I told you we should have brought the visible guns. But noooo, you had to have the invisible guns." XD
I was always wondering how could a spinning desk send you to the shadow realm? now it all make sense
I waited for years now just frickin make a top ten hentai list right now, especially since they animated some good stuff last year.
YES
I had a feeling something Mai-related was gonna show up on the list, but i was expecting her outfit to be among them
I Love this YugiOh Trading Card!!! I've ever Collected the Cards in the Past & Play with My Male Friends!!! 😀😁😀
Velin Caroline Huang Haven’t I seen you in the comment sections of Shirako’s Resident Evil videos?
The one about "Final" the north american print of those cards do spell out final, I had a few of them
I remember watching the entire series after getting outta high school bcuz...i had more time hahaha.
Knew a lot of the censored parts, but knew the gun aspect would be #1.
Well to be fair,
Most of these censorships are understandable especially if you know that this was supposed to aire on a kids channel.
Ugh, 4kids... the cringe creeps in everytime I hear about it.
(Still cry’s at night because they never continued the F’in Uncut Version!!!)
and these still nothing compared to season 0 & the manga, especially when Atem was a jigsaw killer
I LIKE TO PLAY A GAME....
Out of all the entries of this list, #4 is the only one I was unaware of before this video.
Also, for those interested:
Valon's reason of being in (juvenile) prison:
Actual: Brutally used a pipe against a local gang he believed burned the church, that their boss bought, that killed a caring nun that raised him, because they laughed about the fire.
Dub: Omitted entire scene into not even specifying his crime.
Rafael:
Actual: His parents and two younger siblings died in the shipwreck, his surviving relatives took his dad's inheritance and disassociate Rafael, have no real friends because strangers just want his fame, and went with Dartz (the man that later reveled to have started the tidal wave) to a graveyard and found his two younger siblings' skulls that confirmed that his family's deaths.
Dub: His family surviving the shipwreck, but just forgotten about him long after his rescue.
